Chrissy Gilbert, English Department Chair at Carpinteria High School, recently joined the board of directors for the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara, a group that aims to foster positive relationships between the many diverse groups in Santa Barbara and surrounding areas. Gilbert was hired at CHS in 2000 and has taught English, including Advanced Placement in English literature, for the past eight years. Prior to that, she taught special education classes to learning disabled students.

For the past decade, Gilbert’s students have participated in and won the MLK, Jr. poetry/essay contest. She said she “believes it’s one of the most important assignments they address all year because their words form music that comes from their hearts. Students quote from the most inspirational American man in our history and apply them to their life story. It is a wonderful opportunity to share.”

County cannabis conversation picks up in Carpinteria

Collecting public input for its Cannabis Land Use Ordinance and Licensing Program, the County of Santa Barbara will hold a meeting on Friday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. The Ad Hoc Committee of the Board of Supervisors, which is made up of Supervisors Das Williams and Steve Lavagnino, along with relevant county staff members, will collect input and allow for questions regarding the regulation of medical and recreational cannabis. Topics for discussion include the future of business licensing, land use permitting, and fees and taxation.

It’s a family affair

Granddaughter carries Macias legacy

By Lea Boyd Annie Rivas is an unlikely barber shop owner. For starters, she’s not a barber.

However, for the Carpinterian mother and nurse, owning Valley Barbers is a tribute to her grandfather Martin “Marty” Macias, who owned the historic shop with his friend Cipriano “Zip the Barber” Gonzalez for decades.

“My grandfather had a presence about him when he walked into the room that caught people’s attention,” Rivas said. “I remember as a little girl always wanting to be just like him when I grew up—strong, hard-working and selfless.”

Macias and Gonzalez served in World War II then returned to Carpinteria full of entrepreneurial spirit. They bought Carpinteria Valley Barber Shop, which was operating in the theater building. “These two men became the long-time beloved barbers to Carpinteria men and boys,” stated a Carpinteria Valley Museum of History exhibit that showcases several artifacts from the historic shop.

Nearly every longtime local has a story from the buzzing business with its pair of shiny metal and leather chairs looking out on Carpinteria Avenue. Rivas said that when she mentions the barber shop to her patients at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, they often regale her with tales of “Marty and Zip” or gush over her grandparents’ generosity.

Rich Medel got his first haircut, and many others in the 1950s and 1960s, from Gonzalez at Valley Barbers. Gonzalez would give Medel a crew-cut then have him sweep up the floor and run down to Nomad’s Café on the corner to buy him a cup of coffee for a dime. Haircuts, Medel recalled, cost 50 or 75 cents and there were typically about 10 guys hanging around the shop. “They were always busy,” he said.

Macias raised 10 children on his barber shop income. Rivas lives in the first house her grandfather owned, which he passed on to his daughter, Rivas’ mother. He also imparted his strong work ethic to all 10 of his kids, who went on to succeed in their own endeavors and provide Macias with 24 grandchildren.

The Macias kids all spent hours in the barber shop. “My grandfather use to give his kids quarters to go down to The Spot to get a bucket of French fries in the summer. The grandkids used to get dollars,” Rivas said. Macias also occasionally allowed the kids access to his candy stash, which provided a treat to every child who sat through a haircut. Rivas continues that tradition today at Valley Barbers.

Macias’ funny sayings prompted laughter throughout the barber shop.

He sang loudly at Saint Joseph Catholic Church every Sunday, and his white beard made him a perfect Santa Claus for local Christmas events. He worked on one leg for years after losing the other limb while crawling under a stopped train with his pal Tom Sato. The train rolled backwards, severing Macias’ leg and leaving him with a wooden prosthesis that drew curiosity from local kids and delighted his grandkids. “He’d take it off and swing us kids around on it,” Rivas recalled.

In the late 1990s, doctors diagnosed Macias with cancer. He kept his scissors snipping at Valley Barbers until his hands stopped working, Rivas recalled.

“When he passed, the church was filled with just about everyone in Carpinteria.

People were standing in the back, up top and out the doors of the church. That spoke volumes about the kind of man my grandfather was,” she said.

After Macias’ death, Gonzalez operated Valley Barbers until he, too, fell ill with cancer and died a few years later.

His nephew Henry Franco took over for a few years, then Rivas and two other part-

ners purchased the shop. last year Rivas became the sole proprietor, carrying the torch for her grandfather. “I will forever miss him, but continuing his legacy is a treasure,” she said. “It’s an honor to keep his shop going.”

The barbers behind the chairs today are Kane edwards, Carlos Alvarez and

Melinda Diaz. “They all take great pride in their work,” said Rivas. “you will not leave disappointed.”

“Marty and Zip” may not be holding the clippers anymore, but their history fills the little shop. The original barber pole hangs on the wall, along with their framed barber licenses.

After emerging from the Rincon Creek mouth, a large black bear roams along the sand on the warm Saturday afternoon.

A 250- to 300-pound black bear that wandered onto Rincon Point last Saturday was euthanized the next day after a vet determined that the adult male was in poor condition. The animal caused quite a stir when it appeared at the beach among surfers and sunbathers on the warm weekend afternoon. He roamed slowly through the sand and onto several properties within the gated community.

According to witnesses, wardens shot the animal with rubber bullets in an attempt to herd it up the creek, and eventually they tranquilized the lethargic bear and transported it to a veterinarian. “The vet said it couldn’t be saved,” reported Andrew Hughan, Fish and Game spokesperson.

The adult black bear dawdled at Rincon Point for nearly 24 hours before game wardens tranquilized him.

John Stephenson was on the deck of his Rincon Point home Saturday afternoon when he noticed a black, furry back in the bushes nearby. “I thought, ‘Jesus, that’s a big dog,’” he said, before realizing that the large black bear was making its way onto his deck. Stephenson surmised that the animal wandered down the creek in search of berries along the banks.

History had repeated itself, Stephenson noted. Twenty-five years ago a black bear wandered down the creek and appeared on the same property, then occupied by prior owners.

Stephenson talked to Coastal View News before the bear was euthanized, when it appeared likely that the animal would lose interest in the beach scene and return to the wild by way of the creek. The bear spent nearly an hour roaming around the Stephenson home, slowly exploring the property and seeming to look for a way out.

Sue Ledig watched the bear from the beach. She described him as over 4-feet tall when on all fours. “He was a big, big bear,” confirmed Stephenson, who spends time in Colorado where he has seen numerous black bears.

Fish and Game spokesperson Hughan said that sometimes bears that are hit by cars go unreported. An accident could

have befallen the Rincon bear before his appearance at the point. The agency decided not to perform a necropsy on the animal, whose carcass was returned to the wild.

Ramping up the danger

I was almost killed recently trying to enter 101 north from the Linden onramp.

The visibility there for ongoing traffic was bad before the construction began.

Now there is a very short time to see the traffic and by then you are already on the ramp and have to keep going.

Yesterday the traffic was full speed with several trucks in the slow lane and I had to pull to the side of the ramp. While I was waiting to be able to get on, a car came behind me full speed and almost ran into me, which would have pushed me into traffic. This has happened to me several times before, but never such a close call.

I read and sympathized with the July 27 letter in CVN from Sandy and Mario Nargi who almost lost their lives on the Casitas ramp going south.

Both ramps should be closed until they are improved.

Hello, fellow Carpinterians! Since I took office as your 1st District Supervisor in January, I have been spending a significant amount of time working on preparing our county for the coming implementation of recreational cannabis in California. In response to growing concerns, a previous Board of Supervisors banned new operations occurring after Jan. 19, 2016, leaving many folks who were already growing medical cannabis with a “legal nonconforming use.” Unfortunately, this has left us with a status quo that is untenable for a variety of reasons including an inability to enforce on illegal operations, a lack of revenue for enforcement, a limited number of regulations to ensure quality of life for residents and a lack of certainty for growers that could facilitate the purchase of expensive yet effective infrastructure like odor control devices.

A key fact is this: where an activity is not permitted, we cannot mandate odor control or other regulations, and we as taxpayers pay for any enforcement, thus we have inadequate resources. Where an activity is permitted, we can legally set high standards for allowed operations including odor control. Most importantly, the permitted operations will pay for permit compliance, which saves taxpayer money and drastically increases our enforcement ability. In order to make sure any permit structure represents your interests, it’s crucial I hear from you and your neighbors.

With this in mind, I invite you to join me and other members of the County’s Cannabis Ad Hoc Committee this Friday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carpinteria City Council Chambers, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Attendees will include myself, Fifth District Supervisor Steve Lavagnino and representatives from a variety of County Departments. Climate change comes knocking

I love all science. I have been studying climate change, air pollution and the effects of sea-level rise on the central coast for almost 25 years. I have read everything I can about the Arctic, Antarctica, islands disappearing in the Pacific, islands being inundated off our East Coast, Miami and New Orleans. I have learned a great deal, but there is much I do not know and will never understand. But a strange thing happens to you after years of climate change study. A moment arrives that anyone who has studied climate change long enough eventually reaches. I have arrived at this moment many times over the years and it never ceases to amaze and frighten me.

This is a moment in which when everything you have studied and read about over the years suddenly begins to make sense, and slowly that realization becomes an epiphany. This is what climate change scientists call the “Oh Sh*t” moment. This is when the sheer enormity and the consequences of what we are doing as human beings become so overwhelming that all of a sudden you feel like you are two-inches tall. When that happens, all you can do is take a deep breath and say to yourself, “What have we done to ourselves and why are we still doing it?”

Most politicians and certainly none in this administration will ever achieve the “moment.” Fortunately, many scientists are deciding to run for public office throughout the country, realizing that most politicians do not understand the scale of the devastation climate change will do. Fortunately, we have a local official who is very much aware of this and has produced a series of videos on how climate change will affect our city. Go to

How did we get here?

I am still in shock (disbelief) after reading Diane Armitage’s letter in the Aug. 17 edition of CVN wherein she accuses Diana Thorn of being misinformed and watching too much Fox and Breitbart News. She goes on to suggest that Ms. Thorn should take up basket weaving or knitting rather than post her political views for others to read.

Wow. So I guess Ms. Armitage thinks that hers is the only opinion that is worthy of print, and only those with her like views actually know what is going on in the world. One of the great freedoms we have in this country is the ability to speak freely and openly about just about anything that is on our minds. We have lots of TV channels to watch. If you don’t like one station, you are free to change the channel. If you don’t want to read Ms. Thorn’s letters to CVN, you can always turn the page. Trust me, there are plenty of other people out here that do in fact want to read what Ms. Thorn has to say.

The recent events in Charlottesville have got me thinking. I have felt powerless and overcome by the feeling of “how did we get here?” Trump (not my president) has always spoken racist, misogynistic, bigoted untruths, and yet it is just now that I am unable to let it go.

I had hoped that his term would pass quickly, but I know it won’t. I also know we are in a dangerous territory, perhaps hastened by the silence of the people like me. I wonder if my feelings today mirror the gentiles in Germany in 1939. Again, how did this happen?

Though late to the party, I am ready now. I can be an upstander active in working for change and not a bystander hoping time passes quickly. As an ally, I can lend my voice to issues locally. The idea of districting and adding Latino representation on the city council is long overdue.

The majority of the people in Carpinteria are Latino and deserve representation in the government.

There are other complex issues that must be tackled. Is it time revisit the negative imagery of Native Americans in our local school? There are statues and monuments here in Carpinteria that don’t represent our true love of inclusivity and diversity. We need to stay in front of this tide of hate or we will be pulled in by the ugly undertow and find ourselves, like the good citizens of Charlottesville, in over our heads.

A well-placed and reliable source at city hall has stated that the chamber of commerce is behind the hotel at the train station project. And it is the city staff that are pushing this terrible and unhinged dead-end project once more.

The chamber of commerce was not elected. The city staff was not elected. Yet they continue to behave like they know what’s best for the city. Only the people should have that power.

Taking the high ground: City prepares for sea level rise

In the year 2100, Carpinteria’s beach neighborhood could be underwater. How to avoid or prepare for that fate and other potentially disastrous effects of sea level rise are being considered by the City of Carpinteria as it updates its long term planning documents—the General Plan and Local Coastal Plan.

At a public meeting held on Aug. 21 at city hall, consultant Dave Revell of Revell Coastal told the city subcommittee made up of councilmembers Al Clark and Brad Stein and planning commissioner John Callender (David Allen was absent) that climate change is complicated and the science is ever-evolving and full of uncertainties. “But it’s happening. Of that we’re certain,” he said. Revell Coastal and Summit Environmental are working with Amec Foster Wheeler, the city contractor helping to prepare the new Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan.

Partially funded by the California Coastal Commission, the City of Carpinteria’s plan will use models that incorporate the newest information on climate change to determine the specific, local effects of sea level rise. That information will be used to make policy changes and long-range planning.

The Coastal Commission updated its Sea Level Rise Policy Guidance in 2015 by using 2012 predictions of a 60-inch maximum sea level rise by 2100. The newest ranges accepted by the scientific community are linked to probability. A 2.6-foot rise in 2100 has a 50 percent likelihood, and 7.1-foot rise has a 0.5 percent probability.

Carpinteria joins legions of coastal communities that are analyzing the impacts of melting polar ice caps and considering how to address those impacts. Coastal hazards that accompany sea level rise include erosion, flooding, tidal inundation and coastal confluence.

In Carpinteria, where much of the city’s infrastructure occupies low-lying areas, sea level rise could be devastating. The beach neighborhood was built on marshland filled in during the early 1900s. Valuable assets such as beaches, homes, roadways and utilities are vulnerable to rising seas.

“This is not a static report that will be generated... because the science is changing, we’ll need to include reviews of this periodically,” said Leslea Meyerhoff of Summit Environmental. Rather than connecting plans to a timeline, the city can

use the amount of sea level rise to trigger protective measures.

Strategies for addressing sea level rise fall into basic categories: do nothing, protect, accommodate or retreat.

Specific approaches include adding sand or “beach nourishment,” constructing seawalls, building living shorelines such as offshore multipurpose reefs, elevating structures or rebuilding at higher elevations, and managed retreat in which communities phase out development over time and acquire the property.

During public comment, Bob Franco urged the city to take seriously the impact of climate change. “We are already woefully behind in planning for sea level rise,” he said. “There are no do-overs, folks. This is it. It’s urgent that you get on this now.”

The Coastal Commission must approve of the city’s approach to sea level rise, and consultants noted that they plan to work closely with commission staff to ensure smooth passage of the update.

“We don’t want to be in an 18-month, or 24-month or 36-month purgatory with the Coastal Commission. That’s in no one’s best interest,” said Amec lead Dan Gira.

Models for potential impacts of sea level rise in Carpinteria should generate results by the beginning of next year, and will be considered by the city’s subcommittee. Public workshops will also be scheduled to collect input from residents on what city assets should be protected from sea level rise.

The city’s next General Plan update meeting will be held on Monday, Sept.

18. It will address land use designation changes in Carpinteria, including reconsidering zoning on the Bluffs where there is currently a mix of open space preserve, office and industrial buildings and Venoco’s oil and natural gas plant.

It is with great sadness that the family of Albert V. Garcia of Carpinteria, formerly of Santa Barbara, announces his passing on Aug. 12, 2017, at the age of 78. Al was born on March 21, 1939, in Santa Barbara, the only child of Alberto and Jeannie Garcia.

He attended Lincoln Elementary, S.B. Jr. High, Santa Barbara High School and SBCC. In 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly went on to become a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. After his honorable discharge in March 1959, he attended barbering school in Los Angeles, and returned to Santa Barbara to jumpstart his career. Through the 1960s, he owned two barbershops (on De La Vina St and upper State State). In the early 1970s, Al worked for M&F Meat Packing (Sambo’s). In 1983, Al returned to barbering in the Santa Barbara Mesa area. He opened the current location of Mesa Barbers, and after serving customers and three generations of their families, he retired in 2009.

During Al’s retirement he enjoyed

spending time with his wife Frances, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He spent endless hours regaling the family with football lore. Go Bruins! His Super Bowl gatherings were always filled with laughter and a square! His passion for fishing was evident in the hours spent at Cachuma Lake casting away, hoping for the one that got away! The racetrack or “Ponies” was another passion, always placing his bets for the 3-1-9 horse winners.

His home was always ready for visitors at a moment’s notice. A hot meal or barbecue was ready to be lit for the many visiting friends (current and past): Veto, Pete, J.P., Lew, David, Gil, Jason, Philip, Bobby, Keith, Sid, Alex, Rhino, Bob, Rowland, Frank, Ron, Dick and so many more.

Playing horseshoes was always a raucous time at the pit, a toss and that clinking sound of the “ringer.” Boxing was another longtime passion; the “Office” always reserved a seat for Al, most recently at The Palms. We will miss his spirit and enthusiasm for his family barbecues, all sports, old westerns and the joy that all of his grandchildren brought to his home.

Al is survived by his beloved wife, Frances; daughters Monica Shugart (Frank), Barbara Gordon (John), Mitzi Dinius (Ray); sons Michael Sanchez, Vincent Garcia (Monica), Tom Garcia; grandchildren Daniel, Andrew, David, Dimas, Matthew, Scott, Tiffany, Aaron, Amanda and Ashley; great-grandchildren Nathan, Noah, Emily, Audree, Quinn, Tony and Vada. Also many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at McDermott Crockett Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to United Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria or Santa Barbara. A celebration of life will follow at the Garcia residence in Carpinteria.

Congressman has hope for bipartisan cooperation in Washington

u.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal of California’s 24th District struck a different tone last week than many had become accustomed to during his Santa Barbara County First District Supervisor days.

Carbajal, a Democrat, spoke to dozens of community business leaders at the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast held at rincon Events on Aug. 18. However he leaned less on his jovial wisecracking side of the past and focused on the theme of breaking gridlock in Washington and invariably peppered in the word “bipartisan” when discussing his legislative hopes, despite facing a starkly divided Congress.

In characterizing the state of things on Capitol Hill, Carbajal said, “We’ve all heard the saying, ‘May we live in interesting times.’ These are the most interesting times in the federal government.”

True to his theme, he announced that he is part of the newly formed Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, comprised of 21 Democrats and 21 republicans in the House of representatives. Carbajal, who won his congressional seat in last fall’s election, also has seats on the Armed Services and Budget committees.

He commented that the gOP’s failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act was a relief, but at the same time admitted that President Obama’s signature legislation needs help in order to stabilize insurance exchanges and drive down premiums.

“Trumpcare, I say for lack of a better term, would have affected 100,000 people on the Central Coast,” he said.

Carbajal supports bills that would create a public health insurance option to compete with private insurance and one that would repeal the Cadillac tax on expensive healthcare plans typically only accessible to wealthy Americans with the means to afford them. He’d also like to raise the income level of those eligible for federal health insurance subsidies to 600 percent of the federal poverty level.

“I’ve witnessed a lot of bickering about healthcare, and it was all to do with nothing,” Carbajal said.

In addition to healthcare legislation, Carbajal said his time spent in Washington has been focused on spurring small business by easing regulations on investing in small business, encouraging an expansion of microloans and extending a program to award government contracts

In characterizing the state of things on Capitol Hill, Carbajal said, “We’ve all heard the saying, ‘May we live in interesting times.’ These are the most interesting times in the federal government.” to rural and economically distressed areas. For example, America’s Innovators Act would allow 250 investors to buy into an innovation before reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission, an increase to the current regulation of reporting when 200 investors fund innovations.

Carbajal took a second of self-awareness to liven up the conversation. “Is ‘bipartisan’ ringing in quite a bit this morning?” he asked. “I’m trying to impress you. That’s what I ran on.”

During a brief Q&A, an audience member from the nonprofit sector asked what Carbajal’s take was on the Trump Administration’s proposed budget, which would significantly decrease funding for myriad programs that provide assistance to impoverished Americans.

Carbajal said he doubts that the Trump budget would pass when Congress takes it up this fall. “There are enough members of the republican party who think that’s a whacky budget,” Carbajal said.

Still, he said parts of the republican Party who identified as anti-government Tea Partiers when running for office in the early 2010s, now known as the Freedom Caucus in the House of representatives, probably want even steeper budget cuts, as they had wanted a straight repeal of the Affordable Care Act without preserving any of its more popular parts.

In general, Carbajal held out hope that the parties can find common ground, if not from the more radical wings of each.

“I think (moderate republicans) are coming to the realization that if they want to get something done—if they want that for the American people—they will have to work with Democrats,” he said.

“A good teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

Courtney Vasquez retired after 33 years of teaching kindergarten at Canalino School. She came fresh out of college, eager to inspire and shape young minds. Each and every year she did far more than that, she touched people’s hearts. Courtney welcomed all with a smile as they entered her vibrant classroom.

As you looked around her classroom you could see the creativity, energy, and love that she gave to her students. She strived to meet each and every child’s needs, making them feel special and loved. The oversized apples, hearts, and clouds that hung from ceiling sharing each child’s thoughts and feelings about their first day of school, the mischievous leprechauns that came to mess up the classroom each year, and the individualized “I am special” boards that she helped the class created for each child are just a few examples of Mrs. Vasquez’s love and educational creativity. Each day brought a wonderful foundation for every child to build upon.

Each day had a rhythm to it: an individualized place on the rug, the sound of the small balloon popping (would it be loud or soft- let’s

see), the student of the week helping identify the weather/date, and counting the days that turn into weeks and months all to help the children understand concepts. The rotation of activities throughout the day brought a strong foundation to build the rest of the child’s education upon. In the background of all this learning one could hear the soft coo of doves and the rustling of rabbits softly padding their way around their elevated home. These sights and sounds brought comfort and more learning experiences. Courtney took teaching young minds seriously, helping ordinary children grow up to be outstanding citizens.

When we think of Courtney Vasquez we are reminded of the following quotation by John Steinbeck, “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist, and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”

Retirement for a teacher means giving up a job, not giving up the right to teach. Even after you retire, we hope you never stop imparting wisdom and teaching kids the important lessons of life.

“The Fugitive”

the Lions Club has a long tradition of supporting the Carpinteria high School FFA students, and the club continued that legacy this year by donating toward the FFA’s livestock auction at the Ventura County Fair. past district Governor Ron hurd and past president david Seehof were at the fair for the auction of the small livestock.

Although in recent years a local foundation has made it its mission to out-bid everyone, the Lions will again make a monetary award as an “add on” to the students to recognize their efforts and dedication. Sunset Rotary hosts the Women’s Fund

Laurie tumbler and Shelley hurst of the Women’s Fund of Santa barbara paid a visit to the Sunset Rotary this week to review how the Fund serves the communities from Goleta down to Carpinteria. the volunteer-driven collective donor group has funded more than $6 million to various organizations since 2004—close to $1 million of that right here in Carpinteria. the following local organizations have received grant funds: Carpinteria Children’s project, Girls inc. of Carpinteria, Community Action Commission (Senior nutrition), peoples’ Self-help housing (dahlia Court and Casas de las Flores learning centers), united boys and Girls Clubs, Catholic Charities and planned parenthood, Adelante Amigas. overall the Fund’s efforts have positively affected more than 95,000 local women, children and families.

Children’s Project and Westerlay team up for enrichment classes

For many families there’s no down time when the work whistle blows—not a chance for mom and dad to travel to a night class, or strategize on ways to improve household communication. It’s enough to eat dinner and get everyone to bed.

Carpinteria Children’s Project and Westerlay Orchids struck up a unique collaboration to build time into the workday for household enrichment. CCP instructs its Nurturing Parents course at Westerlay Orchids during extended paid breaks for greenhouse employees every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The workers had a customary half hour break, but those who wanted to be educated about effective parenting and nurturing communication can take the hour-long course on the clock.

Angelica Ornelas, a family liaison at CCP, said this is the first time they’ve brought the course directly to clientele.

The classes are regularly offered at CCP. “We brought the idea to Toine (Overgaag, President of Westerlay), and he said yes.

It’s so nice that he offers support and resources for employees.”

Ornelas and fellow instructor and family liaison Maria Caballero said they hope the trend continues and grows to other places of employment in Carpinteria. The attendance, around 15 for the Thursday afternoon sessions at Westerlay, exceeds normal courses either offered in the evenings or business hours for free at CCP. Human Resources Director Darlene Gonzales said offering the course fits Westerlay company culture perfectly. “We want our employees to have a work-life balance and to be progressive in that way.

We know if they’re happier all-around they’ll be more engaged at work and at home.”

The program is funded mainly by First Five Santa Barbara County and the Bower Foundation, and came with perks. Students received car seats and child’s life preservers courtesy of the program, among other items that had been donated.

Operations Manager at Westerlay, and has attended Nurturing Parents for 10 weeks. Through a translator she said, “It’s good that they offer it because it could be complicated to find time or transportation to take it outside of work.” She has already applied some of the lessons with her 11-year-old son.

Guadalupe Vargas, also Westerlay employee, said, “It teaches us to be patient parents, and it even helps with communication with my husband.” She has a 10-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

Gonzales said Westerlay will likely offer another course, perhaps ESL, when Nurturing Parents wraps up.

Caballero and Ornelas are both bilin-

gual and multicultural, which they said is important when instructing Nurturing Parents. Many Latino families, they said, have traditionally used corporal punishment for discipline for generations. “Any parent can benefit from this class, but we speak Spanish and we understand the culture as well,” Caballero said. “We can break this multigenerational cycle.”

She added that there are simply more resources about parenting available for the English-speaking population. A part of the Latino culture that has been evident within the program offered at Westerlay is the dwindling attendance of men in the course. A handful of fathers showed up for the first couple of sessions only.

Head To Toe is looking good at 25

MINDING OUR BUSINESS SHANE BRUCE When I first escaped the stress of Los Angeles by beating a hasty retreat to Mayberry By The Sea, a.k.a. Carpinteria, I asked my roommate, where do I go to get a haircut? She answered matter-of-factly, “Oh, go see Janet! In fact, if you want to know anything about what’s going on in town, ask Janet.”

This is a story about wonder women.

No, not the superhero depicted in the recent Warner Brothers blockbuster, but real, local wonder women, strong and resourceful women who work hard to make this town as special as it is—women like Head To Toe owner Janet Sue Augerot, and her coterie of hair and nail professionals. What’s so special about hair and nails, you ask? It’s all about making people feel good about themselves. “What’s more important than that?” Augerot asks.

She describes herself as a go-with-theflow kind of person who leads with her intuition. She learned early on that she was entrepreneurial when she opened a housecleaning service. “I hated it,” Augerot laughed, “I always had to get my nails done!” And then inspiration struck, and 34 years ago she opened Nails

by Janet just around the corner from her current location.

Later she teamed up with the “hair girls next door,” Maria Mitchel and Gogi Burquez, and they launched a contest to name the new shop on Linden Avenue.

“Our customers named it Head To Toe!” Augerot said. They moved into the space at 887 Linden Ave. and have been keeping Carpinteria well coiffed for 25 years.

Augerot compares her shop to the bar on the television show “Cheers,” “where everybody knows your name.” For Augerot, it’s all about loyalty and longevity.

Born and raised in Carpinteria, she commands an engaging, likable presence. “I have clients who’ve been coming to see me for over 30 years!”

Coming to work is like coming home for Augerot. She finds the perfect balance between work and family by marrying her family into the business. “The salon raised my kids. It has opened my eyes to people and made me realize that I love people!” With a twinkle in her eye and an infectious laugh, it’s obvious why people love Augerot as well.

And that love expressed itself in action.

When her son was in Iraq, the community rallied around Augerot to support her by sending care packages to him. When the economy crashed in 2008, did Janet give up and close the doors of Head To Toe? No, she started another business baking scones and was hired as an on-call manicurist for the San Ysidro Ranch. Burquez started making and marketing salsa.

These ladies are the essence of resilience.

How to navigate Carpinteria’s animal services

Carpinteria loves pets. The sidewalks, patios and (some) beaches are full of happy dogs out with their owners; there are two busy veterinary practices, and two well-stocked pet shops. It’s a good place to be a companion animal!

Carpinteria is a bit complicated, though, when it comes to homeless animals. The city has its own animal control program these days, rather than using County Animal Services. As a result, there’s been some confusion about what to do with stray or abandoned animals, or if an owner can no longer keep a pet.

Sometimes that means animals falling between the cracks.

Here’s the key fact where stray animals are concerned: if you find a stray, you must report it and the city must take care of it. The city’s municipal code requires that anyone finding a lost, stray or stolen animal has to report it within 24 hours. The city will then take charge of it and try to find the owner, and if it doesn’t, will put it up for adoption.

Why is this law in place? Think about it. If someone’s pet goes missing, they are going to call animal control to try to find it. If you find an animal and decide to keep it or just don’t report it, you may be preventing it from getting home. The city impounds strays and advertises them, holding them to give the owner a chance to claim the animal before putting it up for adoption.

Because Carpinteria does things its own way, there are a few wrinkles in all this. The city doesn’t have its own animal shelter. City Hall’s public works yard has been housing a few dogs, with others send to Animal Medical Clinic (AMC) or into foster care.

Since there is no “leash law” for cats, the city treats cats out and about as just that, not generally as stray and in need of rescue. However, if a cat seems to have no home (it hangs around and seems to have moved in, or you know that

the owners have moved away and left it behind), or is in need, the city should impound it at AMC or place it in foster care. This is the critical safety net for the city’s needy animals.

So what if someone owns an animal they can no longer keep?

Because the city doesn’t have a shelter, it can’t KARLSSON take owned animals, nor is it required to do so. Your best bet is to advertise on craigslist or Facebook and find an adopter that you can screen yourself. (Check out the Facebook page, “Lost, Found & Adoptable Pets of Carpinteria,” for a great starting place.) If that isn’t working for you, start with the Santa Barbara Humane Society,

which serves the region and takes “owner relinquished” animals—but be warned, they do have requirements that you will need to meet, so call first (964-4777) to find out what those are. If you have a dog that they won’t take, try the other private rescue organizations in the area to see if they can help: there are humane societies in Santa Ynez and Santa Maria, and also check with DAWG. For cats, we are lucky: ASAP (the cat rescue organization out at the county animal shelter) has just launched an owner surrender counseling program to help all area cat owners. Call them at 683-3368; they may be able to take your cat, or at least will have lots of good advice for you.

It takes a village to care for homeless animals. Carpinteria is a village in spirit, if a city in fact. How can you help this close-knit little city with its animals?

Consider acting as a foster home, to give a homeless dog or cat (or puppy or kitten!) a place to live until it can go back home or find a new family. Call or email the Volunteer Services staff at (805) 755-4401 or mimia@ci.carpinteria.ca.us to sign up!

Among the California Impressionists

Mark Petersen works in oils, painting local landscapes in the tradition of the California Impressionists. A showing of his works will be held at Zookers, 5404 Carpinteria Ave., from Aug. 21 to Oct. 22. Painting for the past 10 years, with formal training from the American River College, San Francisco State University and classes at Santa Barbara City College, Petersen sells his work each Sunday at the Santa Barbara Beach Arts and Crafts Show. Petersen says he draws inspiration from the beauty of the Central Coast and the many artists who work and have worked in the region.

Local author Christine Gordon will be signing copies of her newest book, “The Mourning Dove Calls Again” on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., at Chaucer’s Books, 3321 State Street in Santa Barbara. Like her first novel “Call of the Mourning Dove” her second, “The Mourning Dove Calls Again,” is set in Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia) where Gordon grew up. Gordon’s novels span much of the 20th century in Zimbabwe from World War I to the end of the Zimbabwe War of Liberation in 1979, and focus on the fictionalized experiences of a British Methodist Missionary and his wife (based on the lives of Gordon’s grandparents) and the effects of civil war. Some of the profits from book sales will be donated to the Thekwane School that Gordon’s grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Herbert Carter, established as the Tegwani School in the early 1900s. Both books are available on Amazon.com.

When plums are ripe they are a true flavor flash. Whether they are yellow, scarlet or purple, look for ripeness by holding them in the palm of your hand.

Plums should feel heavy and have a little give at one end. If your plums are hard P SUEYyou can soften them by placing them in a CKEN closed paper bag on your kitchen counter CKEN for a couple of days. To slow the ripening CKEN process put them in the refrigerator.

Here is a recipe to consider as plums flood the market this summer. It is easy 1025 CASITAS PASS RD RD to make and can be made ahead of time to keep from heating the kitchen in the afternoon. It’s also super tasty—both crust and filling. I like to use Santa Rosa or Satsuma plums for my galette, but this recipe will work well with just about any variety.

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup cold unsalted butter (cut into pieces) 1 teaspoon + 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt ¼ cup ice water 5 to 6 unpeeled Santa Rosa plums (halved, pitted and sliced) zest from one small lemon 1 to 2 Tablespoons heavy cream 2 teaspoons turbinado sugar

Process

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

To make the filling, slice plums into ¼-inch thickness and place in a medium mixing bowl. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons confectioner’s sugar and the lemon zest. Mix gently. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Cate football to-do list: 1) Dominate

BY ALONZO OROZCO Although the Cate School football team ended its last season with a 4-5 record, the Rams came within a cleat’s width of the second round CIF EightMan Football League tournament when they fell to Rolling Hills Prep by a score of 60-53. “We scored (to take the lead), and we had about a minute and fifteen seconds to go (in the game). All we had to do was hold them, and we couldn’t do it,” said Coach Ben Soto of the heartbreaking loss that eliminated his team on a Huskies touchdown reception with seven seconds to play.

But now in his 13th year at the helm, Soto has seen many more good days than bad, amassing a 77-33 record since rekindling the football program at the school. Soto gives a lot of credit to his loyal coaching staff, many of which have been involved throughout his tenure.

“I feel I have the best staff … it’s really not about the wins and losses, although we really want to win; but it’s about making better kids, better young men,” explained the longtime coach.

The staff consists of assistants Mel Deaile, Matt Drew, Juarez Newsome, Wade Ransom and Dave Soto, the coach’s son and 2008 Cate grad. Dave played on one of two Ram squads that reached the semifinals of the CIF playoffs in the current era. Craig Bouma, a science teacher, also comes by once a week to help out. With Laguna Blanca opting to go independent, Cate will now enter a new league, the Mt. Pinos League, but will be grouped with familiar foes Orcutt Academy, Villanova Prep and Thacher.

The Rams finished 1-2 against the three schools last year with its only win coming at home against Orcutt Academy, 17-14.

Cate returns seven seniors and 10 juniors who also saw a lot of playing time last year. Once again, the coaching staff will have a lot of size to work with on the defensive and offensive lines.

“This is one of the biggest teams that we’ve had,” said Ben. At tight end and defensive end will be junior Jake Nelson at 6-foot, 5-inches and 210 pounds. Senior Eric Yi comes in at 6-foot, 260 pounds, and Sebastian Richardson at center is also 6-foot, 5-inches.

Back on the line also is All-CIF performer Chris Bennett who stands 6-foot 4-inches and 245 pounds, sophomore Tommy Nettesheim at 6-foot 3-inches and 180 pounds, All-CIF honorable mention Carson Williams at 6-foot 4-inches and 200 pounds, and Luke Beckmen at 5-foot 10-inches and 180 pounds.

Junior All-CIF baseball player Jack Deardorff should take a majority the of snaps at quarterback, but senior Patrick Armstrong will also see a good amount of action. Armstrong, at 6-foot 3-inches and 205 pounds, figures to be a valuable weapon at a quarterback-fullback hybrid position to help accentuate the power game.

Carrying the ball from the running back spot will be 6-foot junior Drew Anastacio, sophomore Khadim Pouye and junior Cal Sinclair, with Nettesheim snagging balls downfield at tight end.

Tritons offer free trial water polo and swim

Tritons Swim Club & Water Polo, a youth aquatics program offered at the Carpinteria Community Pool, is now offering a one-week free trial for interested athletes.

Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1, kids are invited to hop in the pool and get a feel for either competitive swimming or water polo. Coach Armando Ramos said, “Water polo and swimming are fun, healthy and rewarding experiences. SHORT STOPS Fall sports meeting needs parent participation

Parents of Carpinteria High School fall athletes should attend the Fall Sports Parent Meeting on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. in the CHS Cafeteria. Parents whose kids are participating in girls tennis, girls volleyball, boys water polo, football, girls golf or boys and girls cross country participants will first gather in the cafeteria, then break into sport-specific sessions. Coaches request the attendance of each participants’ parent or guardian and say that the meeting will be an important part of getting the 2017 fall season started on the right foot.

Carpinteria Junior Warriors hosted the Bantam divisions youth football Jamboree last on Aug. 19 at Carpinteria High School. The event drew 19 Bantam teams from as far away as Acton. Four other Junior Warrior teams (Mighty Mights, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors) hit the road to play in jamborees outside of Carpinteria. Jamborees are scrimmages to test plays and to ensure each team is set in the correct bracket.

Junior Warriors have home games on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road. Mighty Mights playing around 8 a.m., Bantams around 10 a.m., Sophomores around noon, Juniors around 2 p.m. and Seniors around 4 p.m. All teams will play Camarillo youth football teams.

Halos Pitchforks

&

Expensive bus fare

On Aug. 10 at approximately 7:50 a.m. an MTD driver called deputies about a man who kicked and shattered the sidedoor window of the bus. The driver said that a group of passengers were waiting at the Casitas Pass Road stop when a man (later identified as a 57-year-old) attempted to get on board with a large cart. When the driver told the man that he must take the items out of his cart and collapse it to make room for other riders, the man reportedly sat down and placed his cart in the seating area for disabled passengers. A man with a wheelchair was waiting to board the bus, and the driver said that the man with the cart eventually got off the bus. But as the doors were closing, the man reportedly told the driver, “Next time I see you, I’m going to kick your ass” and then kicked the door of the bus, shattering the window. The damage will cost more than $450 to repair.

Another deputy contacted a man on Carpinteria Avenue who matched the description the bus driver had given. The man reportedly said that he had been on the bus and had argued with the driver.

“I could have done something,” the man reportedly told the assisting deputy.

Additionally, the assisting deputy said that the man had told him that “I kind of blackout and do things like that, that’s why I’m in restorative court” and that he “gets violent especially when people get in my face.” Another rider on the bus corroborated the driver’s statement that the man kicked and broke the side-door window. The accused man was arrested, taken to Santa Barbara County Jail and charged with vandalism.

Cannot tell a lie

On Aug. 14 at approximately 11:47 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road on a report of a man and woman shoplifting. A store employee stated that he had seen the two subjects—later identified as a 34-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman—in the alcohol aisle, and then walking around the store placing items in a backpack. As the man and woman walked to the front of the store, the employee asked if he could look in their backpack. They said no, and left the store on foot.

Another deputy radioed that he was with two subjects on Maple Avenue, south of Carpinteria Avenue, who matched the description of the people in the store. When the reporting deputy arrived on Maple, the deputy there said that the couple had “made spontaneous statements that they had taken food”

from the supermarket. The man reportedly admitted to dropping off a backpack in the bushes near a law office, and the woman said she had also left her purse there. The deputy then went to the area and found both the backpack and purse with items that had been taken from the supermarket, including a personal grooming kit, peanut butter and jelly and a loaf of bread.

Once transported to the Sheriff’s substation, the man and woman said they were homeless and had come to Carpinteria from Ventura on the bus, and took the food and grooming kit because they were hungry and needed to clean up. They were cited for shoplifting and released.

Picking fights

On Aug. 18 at approximately 8:15 p.m. deputies were dispatched to Sandyland Road on a report of an intoxicated man trying to start fights. Upon arriving, deputies observed a man who matched the description given in the midst of a verbal altercation with another man. Separating the two men, the reporting deputy spoke with one of them who provided a name that did not come up in a records check.

The assisting deputy asked the man if he had any weapons on him because he was continuously touching his belt line and pockets, and the man gave his consent to search his belongings.

The assisting deputy handed the reporting deputy court papers that he found in the man’s backpack, with a name that was different from the one he had previously given. The reporting deputy wrote that the man looked frustrated, and mumbled “F—k” under his breath and admitted that the name on the court papers was his. He reportedly said that he gave a false name “because he didn’t want to get into trouble.” The man was arrested for providing false information and transported to Santa Barbara County jail.

A little over ten years ago, the Carpinteria Mutual Citrus Association was organized and a packing house was built on Sixth street extending to the railroad side track. Two additions have been added to this plant so that now the house covers the whole block.

The original service station was established at the southeast corner of the state highway and Linden Avenue about twenty-three years ago. This station consisted of a stand of two pumps and a small fruit stand. That was adequate as there were not many automobiles in the valley.

This service station gave way for a fine super-service station which was constructed by the Seaside Oil Company, the first one of its kind to be built here. This super-service station was razed last winter when that company constructed the fine plant at the corner of Maple Avenue and the state highway.

Since that time, other oil companies have built fine super-service stations until now there are only two corners on the state highway through town on which there isn’t a service station.

The Star Auto Camp, now the Carpinteria Motor Lodge, was the first one of the kind that was ever established in Carpinteria. Later the Pine Haven Auto Camp, now the Pine Haven Motel, was established.

When the Dow-Mueller building was constructed on the state highway at Elm street, Carpinterians were provided with their first real theatre. This building houses a café, a store and a barber shop.

Last of the last: Carrizo Plain National Monument cVn

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham Initially it was the utter silence of the Carrizo Plain National Monument that captivated me. During that moment during the spring of 2006, and every trip since, I think about the silence before soaking in the last of California’s historic grasslands. I especially dwell on it while driving along Highway 33, then Highway 166 before turning onto Soda Lake Road where the silence is intoxicating.

This 50-mile-long swath of “Old California” is nestled between the Caliente and Temblor Mountain Ranges in San Luis Obispo County, and it’s one of two dozen National Monuments being reviewed under executive order by President Trump for potential reopening to oil exploration and cattle ranching.

Like most others concerned with the last of our wild places, I cringed over the possible assault on the Carrizo Plain like a punch in the gut. I asked myself, “When will enough be enough?”

“The Carrizo Plain is enjoyed and admired by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to explore this iconic landscape,” said Jeff Kuyper, Executive Director of Los Padres Forest Watch. “They infuse tourism dollars into local economies throughout the region.

The Carrizo is a boon to local economies, and it would be tragic to lose this natural treasure.”

If President Trump and Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke had just one day in the Carrizo Plain last spring, would it have been left off this dreadful list of National Monuments under review?

The Carrizo Plain was once a vital convergence of Native American cultures where the Yokut and Chumash Indians gathered amongst sandstone cathedrals overlooking the grasslands. Their rock art is some of the most elaborate in North America and deserves continued protections.

The Carrizo Plain has always been one of the standout wildflower hotspots in California, and the spring of 2017 didn’t disappoint. It was easily the best display

I’ve ever seen—50 miles of flowers with the grasslands and adjacent mountains cloaked in tidy tips, tickseed coreopsis, owl’s clover, fiddleneck, hillside daisies, valley phacelia, blazing stars, desert candles and baby blue eyes.

However, even when the Carrizo Plain hasn’t received its required 7 inches of rain for a glorious wildflower season, it is still a natural wonder to behold. Sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning as shadows creep across the grasslands, retreating into open book-shaped draws that feed the Carrizo Plain.

When a full bloom isn’t there and those seeds wait to germinate another time, the Carrizo Plain teems with some of the most unique fauna in the Golden State.

There’s a very good reason why the Carrizo Plain is also known as “California’s Serengeti.” With over 400 Tule elk, the national monument hosts one of the fastest growing herds in the state. Small bands of pronghorn antelope enjoy this wideopen landscape and desperately need the space, since they are North America’s fastest running land mammal topping out at over 50 mph on a dead run.

Of greater concern is the throng of endangered species found across the grasslands and mountain ranges—the Carrizo Plain being a safe haven for more endangered species than anywhere else in

California. Arguably the most important of these critters is the endangered giant kangaroo rat. These little nocturnal burrow builders equipped with huge feet, long tails and giant, almond-shaped eyes are vital to the food web, prey items for an array of furry, feathered and scaled predators. Their burrowing systems also house badgers, and endangered San Joaquin kit foxes, antelope ground squirrels and blunt-nosed leopard lizards.

In fact, this endangered species is so significant to the overall wellness of the Carrizo Plain that Bob Stafford, a wildlife biologist with California Fish and Wildlife, told me following a wildlife survey on the National Monument, “The giant kangaroo rat is basically the key species in the entire Carrizo web,” he said. “As they go, so do a lot of the other endangered species.”

Sure, the Carrizo Plain is just a mere postage stamp of its former self, the entire San Joaquin Valley’s grasslands once teeming with wildlife. Shouldn’t this alone be enough to save the last of the last? The sound of silence grows louder, stretching well beyond those sweeping grasslands.

“The Carrizo Plain is one of the last remnants of a vast grassland that used to stretch for hundreds of miles throughout California’s Central Valley,” continued Kuyper. “There is absolutely no other

Mike and Diane Wondolowski spent time on St. Bees Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, volunteering with the organization Earthwatch to assist in research to inventory biodiversity in various ecosystems across the island. Each day they hiked to different sites and spent the day trapping insects, turning over rocks or digging for and catching lizards, huge spiders, centipedes, scorpions and pretty much anything else that crawled or flew. Along the way, they spotted a number of koalas and wallabies. But even with gloves on and collecting jars in hand, they managed to keep up with the news at home with the Coastal View News.
