To the left, the new bridge will punch Via Real through to Casitas Pass Road. Highway 101 traffic will be rerouted to the portions of bridges now under construction to the left of existing lanes. After that, the existing highway bridges will be demolished and rebuilt. When both sides are combined, the new roadway will accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction. The new bridges over Carpinteria Creek are 10-feet higher than before so that 100-year flood waters can travel downstream without obstruction. Race to raise funds for Franklin Trail

Short-, long- and medium-distance runners will find something to satisfy them on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Island View Trail Race. All distances begin at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road, and climb into the foothills along Franklin Trail. A 4-miler starts at 7:30 a.m. and will turn at the end of the single track, by the Frank Louda bench. A 10-miler starts at 7 a.m. and completes phase two, turning at the beginning of the Los Padres National Forest single track. The 16-mile race starts at 6:30 a.m. and climbs to the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains before turning back to the high school.

This year the Patty Sheehan Foundation will award nine cash prizes to the first- and second-place female runners and the top female runners aged 50 and over in each race. Firstplace wins $100, and second and top 50-plus win $50. Races cost between $40 and $70, and proceeds benefit the Franklin Trail Fund managed

On shore, the AQUATHON will feature a “village,” with live music, games, a raffle, and Master of Ceremonies Phat J from KJEE. Participation fees are $40 for swimmers and SUPers age 15 and over. Kids age 14 and under are $30.

Bluffs celebration to thank community

To celebrate the success of a 15-month, $7.9 million fundraising campaign to purchase and preserve 21 acres of Bluff III, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County will hold a Celebrate the Bluffs Community Party on Saturday, Sept.

16, from noon to 5 p.m. at Procore, 6309 Carpinteria Ave. The event will include live music, food trucks, a beer/wine garden, kids activities and site tours.

Featured bands The Upbeat, Afishnsea the Moon, Tony Ybarra and others will perform. Avofest unveils groovy poster

By Lea Boyd “Who doesn’t love avocados?” queried Emily Crosby when asked about her feelings for the scaly-skinned, green-fleshed fruit Carpinterians celebrate every year with a three-day festival. Crosby, a graphic designer, loves avocados enough to have produced an avo-honoring poster design that was selected to represent the California Avocado Festival in its 31 st year.

Rena VanKirk, the festival’s executive administrator, said that among the many entries into this year’s poster design contest, Crosby’s graphics drew the support of all the decision-makers. “The colors and are fun and vibrate, and the ‘waves’ around the avocado gives it a groovy Carpinteria Beach feel,” she said.

Crosby will attend her first California Avocado Festival this October. The celebrated artist behind the design said she was thrilled to be chosen and looks forward to eating, drinking and admiring all things avo when she attends the festival, scheduled for Oct. 6 through 8.

Last year, Crosby submitted a poster entry similar to this year’s winner. “I really liked the last one I did,” she said. “It just needed tweaking.”

As a graphic designer at Whatever Company, which makes novelty items and customized apparel, she’d been assigned a project to make shirts with 1960s and 1970s band names, like Jefferson Airplane and Janice Joplin. The retro lettering and throwback patterns appealed to her despite her typically minimalist aesthetic. She worked that mood into her Avofest poster.

Growing up in the Northridge area, Crosby didn’t take a liking to avocados as a kid. The 2014 Loyola Marymount graduate, who holds a degree in animation, said that when she tried the fruit again a few years ago, she fell hard. She buys avocados regularly—despite their steep price this season—and orders them on the side of restaurant meals. Also, she said, “Since I’m a millenial, of course I eat avocado toast.”

Emily Garcia has had many successes over the course of her four years showing animals with the Carpinteria FFA program: Chapter President (2015-17), and raising three market hogs, two breeding heifers and two market steers—all while working with three different agriculture teachers.

But to Garcia the buckles and ribbons weren’t everything. Garcia and Remington had a bond that let her take him anywhere and do anything with him. Her instructors at Carpinteria High School appreciate everything she has done for the program, and said that the other students look up to her. Garcia has begun her first semester at Reedley Community College to become an agriculture teacher.

Nathan Saito, a Carpinteria High School graduate with the class of 2009, earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Southern California in May 2017. He is currently a physical therapist at Dos Caminos Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab in Camarillo.

Warrior Band alumni gather for a photo before the halftime show benefitting the high school music program.

Warrior Band Spirit never dies

Twenty-three Carpinteria High School Band alumni from several generations— spanning the decades from 1948 to the most recent graduates—gather on Memorial Field at the high school each year for the annual Alumni Halftime show. This year’s 18th-annual performance happened on Sept. 1, and alumni were joined by the current Warrior Band under the direction of Elise Unruh. Retired CHS band director Langdon Nevens, who starting teaching in Carpinteria in 1968 and retired in 2005, wrote and directed the show.

The Alumni Halftime show began in September of 2000, when a group of Warrior Band alumni raised over $3,000 to support the new stadium, garnering recognition for the group on the school’s Wall of Fame. Members travel thousands of miles to take part, some from as far away as Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Dallas and New York. The event is now a fundraiser for Band Forever, a licensed charitable foundation that raises money to support the local school band program. Members of the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club passed the hat for donations during the show.

Honoring Old Glory

On Saturday, Sept. 1, I saw the flag of the United States of America stuffed beneath the home players’ bench at our high school stadium. A banner with the letters WSND, which I assume means “Warrior Spirit Never Dies,” was on the ground next to the American flag, and it seems to me that a lot of spirit died with our flag and the spirit banner being tossed unceremoniously away.

I returned on Sunday morning, and the inglorious mess was still there, soaking wet from the sprinklers. I picked up our flag and the school banner and then contacted a school board member who I know, and informed that individual of the problem. The board member immediately contacted a high school official. That official contacted me very promptly, and I let him know what I had found. The official made some phone calls, and called me back with an update on the situation.

It seems a coach had told someone to take care of the flag, but that individual did not.

I appreciate how promptly school district officials looked into the issue on the Sunday of a holiday weekend, but the bigger issue is that this happened at all—that our national colors were allowed to touch the ground. Brave men and women have given their lives for this country. To throw our flag on the ground was a slap in the face and an insult to all the alumni from Carpinteria High School that have gone on to serve our country in the military. Perhaps our coaching staff, student athletes and cheerleaders could use a course on flag etiquette from our local veterans, or even the Boy Scouts.

On top of that, a public apology to the community and our veterans from the Athletics department is in order.

What makes a local?

As a native of Carpinteria, I took offense to opening statement that Das Williams used in his letter to the Coastal View News: “My Fellow Carpinterians.” He is far from being a fellow Carpinterian. He can’t even be considered local. I would consider him to be a political opportunist or a professional politician. He moves from the State to District to City and to neighborhood to run for office. He should get a real job and quit wasting taxpayer money. He should do his job and put regulations into effect that would stop marijuana air pollution in our neighborhoods.

Secondly, Mr. Van Wingerden made a comment at the Friday, Aug. 25, meeting at our City Council Chambers. He said that we should all be responsible. I think all my fellow Carpinterians and nonmarijuana growers are very responsible.

In fact, I think that Mr. Van Winderden and his marijuana-growing friends are very irresponsible in letting the stench from their marijuana nurseries permeate our neighborhoods. It is Mr. Van Wingerden’s responsibility, since he lives here, to keep our neighborhoods free from this nasty and obnoxious odor.

I recently read in the newspaper that a four-acre marijuana farm could generate close to $85 million dollars. Mr. Van Wingerden could easily use that kind of money to put in dampers or filters to protect us and our school children.

I would express that our City Council and the Board of Supervisors create a 500-foot setback for neighborhoods and a 1,000-foot setback from our schools to protect our neighborhoods

Addressing letters in last week’s paper, I think Langdon Nevens should start a White Lives Matter movement if he thinks white people are overwhelmingly oppressed in this country, as blacks have been for over 200 years, while being unjustly stereotyped and targeted by law enforcement, as the Justice Department recently showed. The DOJ found from thousands of use-of-force episodes that blacks are far more likely than other groups to be the victims of force, even when racial disparities in crime are taken into account. Since whites control the media, the money, politics and law enforcement, I think Black Lives Matter is more than a just movement, and I think whites who cry about Black Lives Matter need to stop their ridiculous pity party. To end, I find Diana Thorn’s letters lacking in balance, and I think Steve Urbanovich should try and be honest about Donald Trump. Honesty is better policy.

Americans at their best

I’ve had direct contact with a colleague in Houston who had to evacuate her flooded home. Friends and strangers offered her aid, assistance, a place to sleep, etc. She was grateful that Barbara (my wife) and I were “concerned about her” and said this is the type of caring spirit that “keeps her going.”

And I received this from another teacher colleague in San Antonio: “All of the men on our block who had a boat with a motor of any kind, hooked up their boats and took off. One man drove to Fort Stockton to get a boat from a relative in the middle of the night. They are old guys, young guys and middleaged guys. They packed coolers full of food, bought bottled water and took off.

They are wading in dirty water full of alligators, snakes and who knows what else. Many took vacation time from their jobs. They simply joined together to do what needed to be done. They are sleeping in the back of their trucks, and I am sure they are now hungry and tired. We

expect them home tomorrow or the next day. They simply saw what needed to be done and organized themselves. I am certain they will all come home knowing that they helped. I am sure they will simply say that they did it for Texas.”

The tragedy of Hurricane Harvey has demonstrated America at its best. It wasn’t the government. It was common Americans using boats, makeshift rafts, ropes and their own physical strength to rescue people, save pets, deliver food, water and medical supplies to flooded neighbors. No questions about political affiliations, race, color, religion or gender at birth. No name calling. And this while our representatives in Congress remained on vacation.

I recently read in the CVN the good news that the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County successfully raised enough donations to purchase the Bluffs III property. We were also happy to hear they are planning a celebration there on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 16, to thank everyone for their hard work. I have an idea: Sept. 16 is also the date for the annual California

Beach Cleanup, and in Santa Barbara County we will be cleaning trash and litter from over 37 beaches, creeks and harbors starting at 9 a.m. Why not start your celebration early? Come on down to North Rincon (Bates) Beach and pick up some trash bags to take back to the Bluffs property, and give it a good cleaning. Our group can be found at the Pavilion above the beach from 9 a.m. to noon. If you cannot make it to North Rincon, there will be a similar cleanup team at the State Beach near the picnic area. By participating you will be doing a great service to your city!

DACA on the block

On Tuesday, it was announced that Pres. Trump had officially rescinded DACA, and gave Congress six months to address the issue. It was the right move. In our system of government, the Legislature makes laws, the Executive branch enforces the law, and the Supreme Court gives its opinion on whether or not certain laws are constitutional and legal.

Why did DACA have to go? According to George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley (who has a self-proclaimed liberal social agenda), “In ordering this blanket exception, President Obama was nullifying part of a law that he simply disagreed with—if a president can claim sweeping discretion to suspend key federal laws, the entire legislative process becomes little more than a pretense. The circumvention of the legislative process not only undermines the authority of this branch, but destabilizes the tripartite system as a whole.” In other words, his actions were inconsistent with the Constitution’s separation of powers.

In simple terms, Obama’s actions were unconstitutional. The ball is now in Congress’ court.

Thanks to the city manager for providing the public with a development timeline for the railroad hotel project in last week’s Coastal View News. Also, I am grateful he recognized “…the amount of public interest in this project.” However, the preponderance of public interest is in having no hotel: • Three public hearings: 17 of 20 speakers “no” • 11 letters to CVN: 10 of 11 “no” • 10 of 13 emails received: “no” • 150 signatures “no” on a petition submitted by Judy Mulford Further, the public interest does not appear to support the goals of the project as stated: “community identity,” “community revitalization” and “revenue generation.”

Regarding “community identity,” some of the public interest was: • “…doesn’t fit.”

• “…we will need French white tablecloths at The Spot” • “The pretentious character of the hotel…would clash…”

Also, many people lamented the loss of small town identity. Some commenters objected to the privatization of public land for developer’s profit and felt better use of public lands was for trails, open space, parking, parks, gardens—things to be enjoyed by all, not just by the few.

Many commenters questioned that the community needs revitalization. “Revitalization” probably translates to “more tourism brings more tax dollars.” Some “favorable” commenters thought that we do need more tourists. But the vast majority disagreed. For example: • “…pushing the town towards… overbuilt, overcrowded and densely packed…”

• “There is no longer a ‘season’ in town…”

• “…turning our city into a Disneyesque tourist trap.”

Revenue is an important benefit. I sit on the City’s Budget Committee. I know that, while the city has good cash reserves, our annual budgets can only be balanced by dipping into those reserves, more every year, and it is going to get worse.

A councilmember is quoted in CVN as saying the project, “is a revenue source that offsets the need to go to the taxpayers.” One could say this project has gone to the taxpayers at the three public hearings, CVN and emails mentioned above.

Judging from their response, it’s a big “N-O.” For me, the promised revenues come at too high a price. That price is the loss of small town identity and green lighting of tourists and other tourist-serving projects. A neighbor told me he’d “rather have potholes than that hotel.” Fortunately, there are other revenue sources, for example a 1-cent sales tax increase that promises to raise many times more money than the hotel and would be partially paid by tourists.

The people are the boss and this is their city. We risk alienating the people when, first, we do not invite them to the discussion about the revenue problem and then surprise them with a fully formed solution to that problem. Is the hotel really a solution in search of a problem? The cart before the horse?

Her family moved to Santa Barbara in 1929 where she attended La Cumbre Junior High and Santa Barbara High schools. She married Paul Siemon on July 5, 1940. She is survived by a daughter Paulette Baird of Denton, Texas and a son Bill Siemon of Oakridge, Ore. Gene was preceded in death by her husband Paul, a son John and a daughter Margaret.

Gene graduated from Fresno State University and taught special education in Casper, Wyo. and Carpinteria.

Gene loved living in Carpinteria with her friends and always enjoyed a good game of bridge.

Last week, while sorting through the expected back-to-school flyers in my fourth-grader ’s folder, a new topic was addressed: suicide prevention. HopeNet’s Candlelight Vigil on Sept. 10 will be in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day. I have wondered over the years why there was no conversation about mental health and suicide in our public schools. While our nation appears to be under a continual gray cloud of political discord, natural disasters are drowning entire portions of Texas—it can all feel too much sometimes.

Focusing on mental health for our children, our community and especially for ourselves, is vital for our quality of life. Depression is a slippery slope, and I am proud of our community’s effort to shine a light on the preventable and devastating tragedy of suicide. Research suggests we ask our kids how they are feeling, start asking when they are young and are unaware of stigmas or the shame attached to mental illness. I look at it as being similar to asking how their sore stomach feels or a sprained ankle—their brains are just as vital.

All are invited on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at Linden Field. The flyer suggests if you cannot attend, light a candle in your window at 8 p.m. For more information email: hopenetofcarp@gmail.com. Live counselors are available, share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. Just remember, the slope can be very slippery and it is never too soon to seek help, but it can become too late.

Carpinteria extends a hand

Many people and organizations in our town are doing a lot to help the homeless here, with the desired objective of enhancing their self-image and dignity as an important step toward the ultimate goal of finding housing for them. For example, for a year or so, the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (C3H), together with members of the Carpinteria Community Church and other community volunteers, have been serving lunches to homeless people in Carpinteria every Wednesday at the Veteran’s Hall.

Also, every Wednesday morning for about a year, Anh and Ha Ngo, owners of the Linden Laundromat, have provided free laundry services to the homeless in Carpinteria. And Nathan and Whitney Noll, owners of Pacific Health Foods, have provided a P.O. Box at the UPS Store

for homeless people so they have an address for receiving mail and packages.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, thanks to funding provided by the City of Carpinteria and donations made by 15 Carpinterians, Showers of Blessing will bring their portable showers trailer to Carpinteria, behind City Hall, every Wednesday and provide free showers. The $2,250 contributed by the City plus the $1,500 donated by 15 of our fellow residents will cover the cost of the showers for the first three months. If the first three months is a success, we will need to raise another $11,250 to cover the costs of operating the showers for an additional nine months (i.e. for a total of one year).

Just a few of the many people who are making all these things happen are City Manager Dave Durflinger, Council Member Al Clark, Barbara Smith, Maggie Targoni and others from the Community Church, and community volunteers Dave Moore, Mike and Valerie Carmel and Kelsey Bleecker.

Out with the inn

There have been (at least) two public meetings seeking input regarding a possible ground lease for an inn at the parking lot adjacent to the train station on the north side of the tracks. At each of these meetings, the public comments have been overwhelmingly opposed to the idea. A petition signed by over 150 people against the idea was presented to the mayor and city councilmen at the last meeting. In addition, almost a dozen more Carpinterians spoke out against it.

Despite the landslide of opposition, our mayor and two city councilmen voted to advance the idea of a boutique hotel. One voted against it (thank you Al Clark!); one was absent (Brad Stein).

Among many egregious design flaws (enormity, height, view-shed obstruction and onsite parking issues), this project would require placing a public parking lot on the south side of the tracks, creating congestion and a dangerous ingress/ egress situation against the railroad tracks on Linden. As it is, the downtown beach neighborhood already has serious safety issues with only one access. This relocated public parking lot would be placed up against at least 16 bedrooms in the downtown beach neighborhood!

Public parking lots are meant to be bordered by commercial use properties and public streets—not bedrooms. Who could sleep soundly, head on a pillow, mere feet away from the drunk, drugged, mentally ill and homeless who hang out at Parking Lot #3 with its proximity to a liquor store and public bathrooms?

Morning Rotary revels in small town charm

Renowned local photographer Glenn Dubock visited the Morning Rotary Club on Aug. 30 to share his recent project “Small Town” and talk about why Carpinteria captured his heart. Born in Pasadena in 1953, Dubock started shooting photographs at age 10, when he first picked up his dad’s camera. Coincidentally, his first trip to Carpinteria was that same year, and like so many others, it was to camp at the state beach.

Thus began a lifelong love affair with Carpinteria and its beautiful surroundings.

Dubock moved to Carpinteria in 1976 while waiting to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography. Over the years he’s mastered surf photography (and reporting), married his number one supporter, Kathy Lawrence, photographed windsurfing and kitesurfing worldwide, converted to digital and fell love with standup paddle boarding. Through it all, he and Kathy still wander the streets of Carpinteria saying to themselves: “Don’t you just love our little town!”

Dubock’s work will be featured again this year in the Morning Rotary’s Carpinteria Calendar, which will roll out just in time for the California Avocado Festival. Contact Rick Joy for presale information, and look for the booth at Avofest next month.

Lions dig deep for Harvey victims

The Carpinteria Lions Club has had a long relationship with the City of Hope as part of its humanitarian mission, both as a support and contributor. The last meeting of each month, the Lions “pass around the hat” for donations for the City of Hope, but this past Thursday the club agreed to do something different and help another humanitarian effort. Club President Clyde Freeman noted that the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) had already sent $100,000 in relief funds to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. He then challenged all of the members in attendance to “open your wallets and dig deep,” and they did. This simple passing of the hat raised an additional $1,020 for hurricane relief efforts.

World Suicide Prevention Day Candlelight Vigil

HopeNet of Carpinteria’s annual Candlelight Vigil in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the end of Linden Avenue near the seal statue. Leading by example: Chamber goes green In the long view, going green isn’t just good for the planet, it’s good for the wallet. Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce discovered that its landlord on Eugenia Way, david Godfrey, shared that long view, and together they improved sustainability sufficiently to become a certified Green Business in Santa Barbara County.

“We have successfully tackled waste reduction and recycling, energy efficiency and conservation, water conservation, air pollution prevention, and intentionally purchasing environmentally friendly office supplies,” said Joyce Donaldson, President/CEo of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber. “These important actions will help protect, preserve, and improve the environment.”

Rachel Wylie, the Chamber’s Business Resource Coordinator, took the lead role in the certification process. Wylie worked closely with Godfrey, the property manager, during the extensive process of achieving certification. Godfrey had already crossed several items off the certification list in the interest of saving dollars as well as resources. His upgrades included ultra-low-flow toilets, LEd lights outside and LEd or T8 lights inside, drought-friendly landscaping, shades and blinds made of wood to help keep the office cool, and high-efficiency water heater and air conditioning systems.

“The Chamber’s landlord is the perfect example of a businessperson who understands the connection between conserving resources and saving money,” said Frances Gilliland, Program director for the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County. “He was implementing lighting and landscape upgrades to the office building before certification began that really set the Chamber up for success.” once the big-ticket products had been installed, Wylie worked on implementing Green Business practices. Gilliland emphasized that achieving certification involved effort by the Chamber and its landlord, but was completely doable process, and one with meaning.

JN: I’m chairman of the Rent Stabilization Board that helps keep rents affordable in Carpinteria’s mobile home parks, and I’m vice president of the board at Silver Sands Village, the beautiful mobile home park where we live. It’s a wonderful place, and volunteering there keeps me busy and out of trouble!

barbara dunlap Since John Nicoli and Steve Sullivan moved to Carpinteria four years ago, they’ve filled their time to the max with volunteer work. They each do several activities on their own—and still more as a couple.

Nicoli volunteers for HELP, which provides rides to Carpinteria residents who can’t drive or don’t have cars. He’s also on the Mobile Home Park Rent Stabilization Board and the board of Silver Sands Village.

Sullivan is a Seal Watch volunteer during the pupping season, and he works on websites for three local nonprofits.

Together, they volunteer in the downtown visitor kiosk, donate time to events such as the Carpinteria Triathlon and plan to have a blast operating the Ferris wheel at this year’s Avocado Festival.

Here’s a closer look at these two active Carpinterians.

Why is it important to volunteer?

SS: Carpinteria is a special place that has maintained a lot of its small-town charm. I think its volunteers and volunteer programs are a big part of that.

JN: These organizations provide a great service to the community, and the more we volunteer, the better it gets.

John is a board member and a dispatcher for HELP of Carpinteria. What do those positions entail?

JN: As a dispatcher, I take calls from people who need rides. I schedule appointments and coordinate with drivers.

HELP is always looking for volunteer drivers and dispatchers.

The board oversees finances and takes care of monthly business. I’m doing some publicity and working on fundraising. We

SS: From Dec. 1 through May 31, Seal Watch volunteers are at the rookery from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. We commit to a two-hour shift once a week. We collect data, talk to visitors and monitor rookery activities to help prevent any disturbances to the moms and the new pups.

I volunteer there because I love the ocean, nature and wildlife. It’s amazing what you see out on the bluffs in two hours. And the people who come to observe the seals—you have your weekly regulars and then you have individuals from all over the world.

Steve also donates time by building, updating and managing websites for nonprofits. Please describe that work.

SS: Last year, I took over updating the Seal Watch site, and I’m hoping to have a completely new site ready soon.

I built HELP’S first website to accompany that group’s first-ever fundraiser in August. I’ll also be taking over management of the Carpinteria Beautiful website from Heidi Bautista, who has done a wonderful job.

You enjoy volunteering together at various venues. What do you do at the downtown visitor kiosk, and what are you planning for this year’s Avocado Festival?

JN: From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the City of Carpinteria has an information kiosk with an all-volunteer staff. Steve and I do that together about once a week.

ment. I’m amazed at the number of wonderful people we’ve met and the friendships we’ve made from volunteering.

JN: It takes me back to my New England roots and my childhood in a small town. Everyone knew each other and helped each other. That’s what volunteering means to us—wonderful people doing wonderful things in the community.

Potent Pirates capsize Warriors

The early season woes continued for the Carpinteria High School football team last Friday, as for the third season in a row, the Warriors dropped their opener, this time to North County rival Santa Ynez. In Rick Candaele’s debut as head coach, Carpinteria could do little to slow down the fourth-ranked team in CIF Southern Section’s Division X (according to online football site MaxPreps), as the Pirates cruised to a 63-0 win at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

“I think that they (Santa Ynez) think that they have a championship team, and I think down the road that we will, too,” said Candaele. “They’ve been working on it for three years, and we’ve been working on it for three months,” explained the former UCSB football coach.

Santa Ynez got out of the gates quickly with running back Cash Transeth scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run to put the visitors up 7-0 with still 9:10 left in the opening quarter. Following a Carpinteria punt, Santa Ynez took over at their own 32. Then wide receiver Gabe Prendergast, taking the handoff on an end-around, romped through the Warriors’ defense for a 70-yard score and a 14-0 lead.

Things wouldn’t get any better for the Warriors, as Steven Enderle’s interception then put the Pirates back in business on the Carpinteria 28-yard line. Transeth capped off the short drive with a 1-yard run to make it 21-0 at the 5:26 mark. On the ensuing possession, Prendergast would come up with yet another big play, this time a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Still unable to get a first down, the Warriors would be forced to punt, giving the ball back to Santa Ynez on their own 20. A 38-yard reception by Travis Vreeland would lead to a third Transeth touchdown run, and a 34-0 lead. In the next offensive series, Carpinteria quarterback Vance Keiser was able to connect with Brady Sturdivan for a couple of completions, and the first-year coach decided to go for it on fourth down on his own 43. But Keiser was stopped for a 1-yard loss on the quarterback keeper, and the Pirates took over from there.

Santa Ynez added three more touchdowns to build a 56-0 lead at halftime.

With Keiser suffering an arm injury in the first half, the Warriors brought in Will Collins at quarterback to start the third.

However, he was unable to get the offense moving either, and Carpinteria was forced to punt again. “We couldn’t move them too much up front; we didn’t create any big, gaping holes,” said Candaele of his team’s offensive line play. The Pirates then took to the ground themselves, driving 81 yards to eat up the clock in the third quarter with Dustin Gregg capping off the drive on a 3-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring.

Gregg and Prendergast would share the “Warrior Spirit – Pirate Pride” player of the game award annually given to the best performances. Keiser completed two of five passes for 18 yards with two interceptions. Leo Vargas led all Warrior rushers with 8 yards on 11 carries, and Sturdivan caught two balls for 18 yards. There was no report on Keiser’s injury, but it was recommended that he not return to play in the second half of the game.

Carpinteria hosts Morro Bay this Friday with the kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Morro Bay comes in at 0-2, also losing to Santa Ynez, 65-22, and to San Marcos, 35-19.

Aug. 31 – The Carpinteria High School Girls tennis team evened its record at 1-1 with a 14-4 non-league win versus Nordhoff. In singles, Josie Gordon and Jessica Lord won two of their sets, while Sydney Endow went 1-2. “In doubles, we really played at ease and only dropped seven games total out of the nine sets,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. Diana Gonzalez went 3-0 with partners Hali Schwasnick and Anna Artiaga. Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo also had sweeps. “The Rangers have been unable to practice during the heat wave, so we seemed a bit sharper from the start of the match, which really helped our confidence and momentum,” added Bryant.

Junior Ali Hamadi lit up the cage with five goals, and right behind him was senior Jordan Perez with three. Senior goalie Mac Clayton had 15 one-on-one counter attack blocks, seven perimeter blocks, a 5-meter penalty block and five steals to keep the Warriors afloat.

Mighty Might: Daminan Salinas, #5, is a first year player and took on a big role at QB and defensive end in last Saturday’s game. He ran the ball hard and scored the first touchdown of the season. Mighty Mights were defeated by Santa Clarita, 6-12.

Bantam: Cruz “Cruzer” Marsella, #24, is a first year player and was player of game Saturday against Santa Paula.

He had several tackles on defense and had the game-winning tackle in the defensive game. Marsella comes to practice with a good attitude and is a nice, coachable kid.

Bantams beat Santa Paula, 8-6.

Junior: Donny Magee, #31, is a first-year player and led his team throughout the game. He played quarterback with heart and determination. Magee finished the game with two rushing touchdowns, including a 55-yard run for a score. A leader has been born. Juniors beat Newbury Park, 42-12.

Senior: Edgar Mendoza, #75, is a first-year player.

Mendoza, on defense, playing corner with tight coverage, caused the backward pass to be uncatchable and pursued it to recovery resulting in Warrior position. Seniors were defeated by Camarillo 0-32.

Aug. 29 – With a new coach at the helm, girls golf smoked Nordhoff 270-342 playing at home. Coach Reina Kearns reported that the team has a positive outlook on the season. Top performers were Amanda Blair with a 45, Mikayla Blair with a 53 and Lucy Light with a 55 and two pars.

Cross Country

Sept. 2 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational and turned in several impressive finishes. In the Girls Short Course 1.43-mile race, the squad finished third overall. The top Warrior finishers include Shayla Alvarez in ninth place with a time of 9:58, Savannah Alvarez in 12th place at 10:06, Emily Santillan in 17th place finishing in 10:41, Edith Lopez in 18th place at 10:41.5 and Alejandra Alvarez in 22nd place with a time of 10:54. The boys top finishers in the 3-mile course were Caleb Classen in 13th place at 16:44, Dexter Gordon in 76th place with a time of 19:05, Luke Nakasone in 82nd place at 19:19 and Victor Rinaldi in 130th place at 20:27. In the Boys Short Course, Bernardo Cardona took seventh place with a time of 8:20. The Warriors will be competing in their own home meet, the Carpinteria Valley Invitational, on Sept. 13 at Viola Fields.

Aug. 31 – The Cate School Girls volleyball team lost its season opener to Foothill Tech on its home floor up on the Mesa, 3-0, with final scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-12.

“The Rams put together some good plays and played some excellent defense but the firepower of Foothill was a little too crisp and accurate to defend,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. Sophomore Maya Blattberg’s swings collected four kills, and senior Hailey Panzer added four kills of her own and produced two aces off her serve. Sophomore Grace Blankenhorn, senior Julia McCaw, freshman Riley Borchart and Blattberg passed for over a 2.10 percentage. “The excellent passing allowed the Rams to run a tight offense and opened up opportunities in the setting department,” added Novak.

Cate will play Villanova at home upon returning from “outings week” on Sept. 14.

Girls tennis

Aug. 31 – The Cate School Girls tennis team, after 10 days of practice, beat Rio Mesa, 12-6. Grace Fuss and Carol Cai were unable to beat Rio Mesa’s number-one singles player Jupneet Singh, but registered wins at the other two singles positions. Kate Tunnell snagged a fifth set for the Rams in singles. In doubles, Sarah Polowczak led the line, winning two sets with Jackie Cai and then added a third set with freshman Fritze Mayer. Senior Janice Ng and junior Sydney Burton also prevailed in doubles, winning two rounds before being substituted out. “It’s nice to get a win to open the season, and even better that all 12 players that made our varsity team are already off the blocks with at least one set won,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe.

I am often asked for help determining if a pet is “ready,” or in pain, or is suffering. Pet owners want the best care for their fur-child and to keep him or her out of any discomfort while also maintaining that loving bond as long as possible.

So begs the question, what about hospice-type care for an ailing pet who is still having many good days (or whose owner feels that there is more quality of life in being here)?

Fortunately, with the rise of integrative and holistic care, there are more treatments now than ever before. Father Martini gains elevation with CVN

St. Joseph Catholic Church Pastor Monsignor Richard Martini recently bicycled across Washington State’s Cascade Mountains as part of his nearly completed goal to bicycle across America. Father Martini and his bicycle partner, Mike Lee, began the trek across the Cascades on Aug. 4, and when Lee was forced to drop out, Father Martini continued on alone. As part of his epic ride, Father Martini crossed over famous 5,477-foot Washington Pass, 4,000-foot Loup Loup Pass and 4,310-foot Wauconda Pass. “Steep climbs, narrow shoulders, sheer drop-offs, and speeding logging trucks gave the ride a real element of danger,” said Father Martini. “But the best parts were the downhill runs!”

Some of their summer fun included kayaking down the Wailua River, splashing in the Secret Falls, snorkeling on the secluded Na Pali Coast and enjoying scoops upon scoops of Lappert’s ice cream. Lauren was a summer intern at CVN and sure to never leave home without the paper’s most recent issue.

So here it is. What you look for can vary, but the most important thing to notice is that your pet’s quality of life has diminished.

They may continue to eat, but not walk well, or be embarrassed by accidents in their beds and home. Animals are not so attached to their bodies and earthly life as we are, and are far more accepting of letting go when their bodies fail them.

One thing to remember is that they can tell when we do not want to let them go, and may hang on too long, in pain and feeling weak, simply because of our strong emotions. I have learned over the years that one thing people often regret is waiting too long to make the decision. So realize that your aging or suffering pet is often ready well before you are.

How we help families prepare for euthanasia

In the past few years, coming to homes to help animals’ transition has proven to be a peaceful, beautiful, loving and highly appreciated part of my home services, and I really like to think of it as “giving your pet their wings,” as they truly are little angels while here.

Animals give us amazing, unconditional love and illuminate the path to emotional and even physical healing for us. There is nothing quite like the humananimal bond, and when people don’t understand why they miss their pet so much, I try to explain it this way: Think about how many moments they are there for us. Who else do you know, including your spouse, who is there in all of life’s moments, including accompanying you to the bathroom, lying in bed when you are sick and telling you that you’re still beautiful, and greeting you every time you step back into the house, no matter how many times that is in a day?

When viewed that way, how could you not be more attached to your pet than to anyone in your life?

Our euthanasia process

What happens when I come over?

Firstly, the pet should be in his or her favorite bed, favorite room or yard area, and should be around fun things to eat or toys that they love.

I have been advised by those who communicate with animals, that it is best if you verbalize to them that you are okay for them to leave. Even if you are sad, you tell them you will be okay.

Next, I give them a small injection of sedative just under the skin (in the usual vaccination site) that will take full effect by about 10 minutes. In this time, they will lie down, relax and may have a lolling tongue. Often their eyes will remain open. They are fully anesthetized and do not feel anything once asleep.

Once they are deeply into this sedated sleep, it is time for the final injection. This is simply a strong anesthetic at an extreme overdose, causing the sleep to deepen so much that their heart and brain stop. It is very rapid and very peaceful. There is no awareness.

Once a pet has passed peacefully this way, we have an amazing service that provides aftercare and, if you so choose, will return ashes and a paw print to you.

If someone does not want ashes returned, they will be scattered in a beautiful field or over the ocean. All steps are taken with dignity and respect for their lives.

We all wish our pets could live as long as we do. I just remind each and every one that their short, loving, beautiful lives demonstrate the full spectrum of living presently in each moment, loving, playing and saying a graceful goodbye so we can see how life is best lived, truly.
