Signs of change and changes to signs marked the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board’s July 14 meeting at city hall.

Specifically, new signage was considered for Pizza Man Dan’s at 699 Linden Ave., GranVida Senior Living Community at 5464 Carpinteria Ave. and McDonald’s at 1115 Casitas Pass Road.

The soon-to-be pizza restaurant sought permission to mount a 20-foot long internally illuminated sign with 12-inch height lettering and a 20-inch height logo on both the Linden Avenue and 7th Street building frontages. Board members asked sign contractor Signarama to return to the city with a subtler version of the proposed signs, something smaller, with toned down colors and without internal lighting.

The ARB discussed possibly lowering the 20-foot tall, internally illuminated sign proposed for the northern corner of the senior facility’s parking lot. Mounted on pylons, the approximately 10-foot-wide and 5-foot-tall sign would face the freeway and include the facility name.

No major modifications were recommended for GranVida’s Carpinteria Avenue-facing ground sign. The sign proposed is 5 foot 6 inches tall, internally illuminated and located near the driveway to the senior facility.

McDonald’s requested one new sign and one replacement sign for its Casitas Pass Road restaurant. Both proposed signs are 16 feet long with 2-foot tall letters; one would replace the existing sign reading McDonald’s facing Casitas Pass Road and the other would be newly installed facing the parking lot. The ARB requested a reduction to lettering size and a slight setback to reduce the signs’ protrusion.

By Lea Boyd Now that the shock has worn off and the news has settled in, Carpinterians are faced with a big task related to the recent purchase of 21 acres of blufftop property on the east end of Carpinteria Avenue— raising $451,000 to truly lock it in as preserved open space. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County closed escrow on the $6 million property last month and has shouldered responsibility for bringing in most of the remaining funds needed, but Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs is looking to the community to pitch in nearly half a million in order to put the property permanently into the hands of the public.

The land overlooking Rincon Point will cost nearly $8 million when all’s said and done. That price includes the purchase as well as closing costs, property improvements and an endowment fund to help maintain it. Before going public with the effort to acquire Bluffs III, better known as Thunderbowl to many Carpinterians, the Land Trust quietly raised $3 million from anonymous donors. Another $1 million is anticipated from county and state resource protection grants, and the Land Trust and Citizens group are hard at work to bring in the rest. In response to last month’s announcement, community members already have contributed $60,000 toward the Citizens’ $451,000 commitment.

Chet Work, Executive Director of the Land Trust, said that the goal is to raise the necessary funds within a year.

Remaining enmeshed in Bluffs III fundraising any longer could limit the Land Trust’s ability to pursue its next opportunity to preserve land. Former property owner Burton Hancock Trust accepted half of the purchase price upfront and financed the rest. The Land Trust hopes to pay off the debt within a year to accrue less interest and reduce overall price.

Citizens for the Bluffs is now distributing donation cans to businesses throughout town. A few quarters, a few dollars, a few hundred dollars—it all makes a difference, said Arturo Tello, president of the group. This weekend, the Palm Loft Gallery opens an art show benefiting the Bluffs purchase, and anyone interested in organizing a fundraiser for friends and family is encouraged to do so and to begin by informing the Citizens group.

Community fundraising is necessary not only to complete the land deal, Tello said, but to give Carpinterians a sense of ownership, pride and stewardship for the new piece of public land. “We are so blessed to have the ocean and the mountains, but we need open space where we can re-create ourselves,” said Tello.

Tello, a painter whose muse is open space, was highly involved in the 1998 effort to save the 52 acres of Bluffs that are now Viola Fields and the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve. The community, Tello said, uses that open space extensively and respectfully. “I think people realize that it’s a local treasure and they

He expects a similar relationship to develop between the community and Bluffs III, though the property needs some TLC first. Heaped with fill dirt and used as a racetrack in the mid-1900s, the vacant land to the far east of town has struggled with illegal dumping issues and neglect.

Nonetheless, both the Land Trust and Citizens share an optimistic vision for its future. “There are no unsacred spaces, only spaces that have been desecrated,” said Tello. “It’s been a little mistreated.

We need to help it along a little bit and then let it be what it is; I think it will be wonderful.”

Work said plans haven’t been formalized, but he expects with habitat restoration, improved parking, construction of trail and possibly bathrooms, the property will “really shine.” Ultimately, the Land Trust hopes to transfer the preserve to the city, much as the Bluffs Nature Preserve was handed over nearly two decades ago.

Zoned for a resort, Bluffs III has been in developer crosshairs for decades. The Burton Hancock Trust owned it since the 1960s, Work said, and had entered several purchase agreements with developers in recent years. None of the plans presented proved palatable to the city. Pressure to minimize the extent of development from grassroots groups like Carpinteria Valley Association and Citizens for the Bluffs, along with heavy scrutiny by city staff and elected officials had stymied developers looking to maximize profit. Work said they’d been forced to ask themselves, “Do we execute on a purchase agreement or do we want to walk away? And they’ve ended up walking away.”

The company that held the most recent

option, Work said, filed a number of extensions that frustrated the eager-to-sell owner. In situations like that—a willing seller and a supportive community—the Land Trust sees opportunity. The organization, which is dedicated to preserving open spaces that offer agriculture, scenery, recreation and/or natural habitat, was careful not to show its cards in order to avoid pushing a developer into a purchase or to driving the price above market value. Legally, as a nonprofit, a Land Trust can’t pay more for a property than its appraised value.

“We just kind of had to sit on our hands,” said Work of the Land Trust’s approach to securing Bluffs III. At the end

of February, the developer failed to secure another extension, and the Land Trust made its move. It vetted the property, locked in a small number of big donors and closed escrow within 100 days.

“It’s not over,” said Work of the Land Trust’s effort to preserve the Carpinteria Bluffs. A 2.5-acre property east of the recent purchase—the elevated area that serves as a launch site for paragliders— could still become a resort, and developers are expected to submit new plans for the Tee Time property to the city soon.

“We only work with willing land owners,” said Work. “Those pieces of the puzzle are not ready now.”

In 1979 I was standing in the Chicago airport terminal waiting for my plane; a woman came within inches of a young man’s face. A man she did not know.

She screamed obscenities and called him names, like murderer. I did not look at his face, but stepped beside him and quietly asked the woman to leave. She (thank God) backed down, because to tell you the truth I had no idea what I was doing, except that I knew what she was doing was wrong.

After the woman left, I thanked the young man for his service and told him my father also served our country as a lieutenant in the Air Force in World War II. From that day I never pass a serviceman without thanking him for his service.

Why are the 1970s radicals romanticized today, when in reality they are ugly, violent people? What happened to old Bill Ayers, the Weather Underground bomber, and his associates? He was hired as a professor at University of Illinois at Chicago and has been teaching our young.

Bernardine Dohrn, Ward Churchill and Angela Davis, all of them were hired as university professors. I think I would ask for my tuition back.

In their bible, “Rules for Radicals,” Saul Alinsky’s tactics are about “acquisition of power” (his words) getting it, keeping it, using it. He says, “All effective action requires the passport of morality.”

His ethics are about giving a moral “appearance” as opposed to behaving morally. They have no regard for the destruction they cause or the communities they hurt. In Alinsky’s works I have found no concern for the individual, his or her needs, wants, dreams or happiness. Their movement is not about people or even justice, it is about “acquisition of power.”

I have already lived this once. It was wrong then and it is wrong now.

A two-story house is being reviewed at the city for the last remaining parcel at the corner of Returno and Concha Loma Drive, where there is an avocado orchard. This parcel at 650 Concha Loma is the crown jewel of our area because it is highly visible to all who travel up and down to their respective neighborhoods.

So let’s get this project right.

A house this tall at this location will not only be incompatible with the surrounding homes, but because it would sit well above the street and be built on caissons, it will loom above all nearby homes.

This is why we are proposing a twostory moratorium on just the six parcels

I live near a red curb that prohibits street parking to provide critical visibility at a nearby intersection. Recently, some residents have made a habit of parking there. Then, I hear cars honk as they nearly hit each other.

Logically, red zone fines should be on par with blue zone fines. Blue parking zones provide critical access to disabled drivers. That’s very important and the law treats it as such. Illegally parking in a blue zone costs a respectable $282.50.

Red parking zones are also critical because they provide essential safety to everyone. Red zones help keep people out of blue zones and caskets. However, red zone fines only cost $43.50.

That’s what people willingly pay for parking in major cities. Of course, a fine is only effective if people are unwilling to pay it. To make matters worse, anyone who parks in a garage in downtown San Francisco is certain to pay a hefty parking fee while someone parking in a red zone is just taking a chance. Where’s the deterrent when people only risk paying a price they’re OK with? The answer can often be found in my neighborhood by the red curb where people don’t mind parking—even after being ticketed.

The risk of blocked visibility is underrated because we only notice one of its two aspects. There is the risk when having to merge into traffic we can’t see. And there is the risk of not being seen which we generally don’t notice—until a vehicle comes straight at us.

Unlike parking violations that could involve distraction, such as parking longer than the time allowed or parking on street-sweeping day, parking in a red zone is inexcusably intentional. It also creates an underrated but serious hazard for others. So, would anyone in Carpinteria really have a problem raising that fine to a respectable amount? Please let the City Council know.

There has been misinformation spread that turning down this two-story house at this location would affect all property values in the Concha Loma area. This is not true.

Mom maintains need for better gun control

Thank you letter writers Dennis Nix and Kevin Till for pointing out the “illogicalities” in Sam Truax’s letter (“Mass shootings demand mass gun control,” CVN, June 23) mainly when he stated that the shooter was allowed to purchase an assault weapon without a background check.

Getting the facts correct is important and a good lesson for Sam moving forward. I commend 17-year-old Sam for

taking the time to write the letter. It’s powerful to know this young man is concerned for our country, our laws, who becomes the next president, and he can show his outrage for the constant violence that surrounds him.

I echo my son Sam’s desire to ban arms but sadly that will not work in this world. I agree with Mr. Nix that what we need is criminal control but, I say, coupled with better gun control.

Obituaries

Gretchen F. Burnett 3/5/1940 – 3/22/2016

Dr. Gretchen Fall Burnett, 76, of Carpinteria, passed away following a brief illness on March 22, 2016, with family by her side. Born March 5, 1940, to Mart Robert and Edna Marie Swanson Fall of Seattle, she attended Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington.

In 1968, Gretchen married Henry Bowen Burnett, Jr. and moved with him to Marina del Ray, Calif. where she became an accomplished potter, a craft for which she later became well-known in Santa Barbara. The couple eventually made their home in Montecito where they lived for 20 years. Gretchen returned to school and earned her doctorate in psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She built a successful practice in Santa Barbara as a psychotherapist where her clients thrived under her compassionate care.

After Hank’s death in 1989, Gretchen moved to Carpinteria, where she quickly fell in love with the community. She was a volunteer with Friends of the Carpinteria Library, as well as an avid student of Spanish and Tai Chi. In 2014, Gretchen retired from practice and spent time traveling with friends and visiting family on the East Coast. Gretchen was known for her generous good nature, high spirits and her compassion for others. She was loved by all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.

Gretchen is survived by her beloved niece Lisa Fall Toler; her aunt, Mina Fall; four Fall cousins, Mina J., Lisa, David and Stephen, her stepchildren Whiteley Burnett Wheeler, Alicia Adams Burnett and William Nicholas Burnett II (Nick); brothers-in-law Dr. Bruce Burnett and David Burnett; six step-grandchildren, 12 nieces and nephews and 24 grand-nieces and nephews. Gretchen was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Daniel Fall of Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Russell Edmund Ewing 9/12/1925 – 7/3/2016

Mr. Russell Edmund Ewing, born Sept. 12, 1925, died peacefully in Santa Barbara, Calif. on July 3, 2016. He was 90 years old and is survived by all of his beloved friends and family. Russell was born in Grayslake, Ill. where he spent his childhood and disliked the snow.

In 1943, Russell dropped out of Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Ill. to follow his brother’s footsteps by enlisting in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he worked as a Navy Hospital Corpsman in the Orthopedic Ward of Memphis, Tenn. Soon after, he was sent to Shanghai, China where he resided until his honorable discharge in April of 1946. He attended ASU in the 1950s for engineering and had a passion for electronics, photography, genealogy and writing. Russell enjoyed writing so much so that beginning in 1958, he worked as freelance writer for multiple newspapers and magazines across the country. But most importantly, Russell is recognized for his writings, which were featured in the Grayslake Historical Society Archives.

Russell married Ethel Hetland in January of 1965 and loved his step-children.

He was a dedicated individual who loved writing and who was passionate about educating the world through his stories.

He was an active and dedicated member of the senior center in Carpinteria, Calif., where he ate lunch daily and lived on bingo. A graveside service was held at Santa Barbara cemetery for immediate family. All are welcome to celebrate the life of Russell Edmund Ewing by making a donation to the Veterans Affairs or Senior Center in Carpinteria, Calif.

Sara Frances Macias 10/10/1925 – 7/16/2016

One of God’s perfect little angels was called home on Saturday, July 16. Sara spent her final days surrounded by her loving family. Sara Frances (Gomez) Macias, beloved wife of Ed Macias, who preceded her in death, is survived by her son Edward (Debbie), daughters Dorinda (Oscar) and Pamela; grandchildren Nicole (Jesse Johnson), Bryan and Matthew (Sara); great-granddaughters Brooklyn Elizabeth and Nora Ann and great-grandson Matteo Edward (due in October) and baby Johnson (due in December). Sara is also survived by her sister, Mary Cano, her sisters-in-law, Eloise Gomez and Erlinda Gomez, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Sara was born in Miami, AZ on Oct. 10, 1925 and moved to Santa Barbara as a young girl. She attended Lincoln Elementary School, Santa Barbara Junior High and graduated from Santa Barbara High School. Sara met Ed while working at the Carpinteria Packing House. Ed always said it was “love at first sight.”

They were engaged before he left for the war in Korea and they married upon his return on Dec. 5, 1953. Through the years, Sara and Ed exemplified what it meant to be husband and wife and taught their children and grandchildren the importance of family.

Sara has been a long time Carpinteria resident and loved volunteering at count-

She was active in many community organizations: ABWA, Soroptimist International, Girls Inc., Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, Meals on Wheels, the City of Carpinteria Volunteer Host Program and, most importantly, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Sara even volunteered at the St. Joseph Carnival on the night she was admitted to the hospital.

For over 50 years, she spent countless hours working, planning and organizing the carnival. Sara also loved being involved in the school life of Edward and Dorinda while they were attending St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and Bishop Diego High School. All of Sara’s volunteer activities demonstrated her love of people, her love of being involved, her love of helping others and her desire to give back. Sara was recognized for her outstanding commitment to the community of Carpinteria by being honored as the Carpinterian of the Year in 1980.

Sara’s love of flowers was demonstrated by her 20-plus years of working at Vons in the floral department after her retirement as owner of Ed’s of Carpinteria Men’s Store. She will be greatly missed every Thursday morning by her Reynaldo’s “coffee girls,” Anne Gilligan, Sue Labadie and Carol Lemmerman. Sara carried on the morning coffee tradition started by her husband Ed and his pals.

She was always so, so happy when her family was in town and could join her and the girls for coffee. Sara will be truly missed by the lives of every person she touched. Her commitment to family and friends will remain close to those she leaves behind. Sara’s unwavering belief in God allowed her to enter heaven knowing she was treasured, blessed and loved.

A very, very special thank you to the nurses, techs and doctors of Cottage Hospital’s MICU Department, who so tenderly cared for Sara. In the eyes of her family, they are all an honor to their profession.

The Rosary for Sara will be on Thursday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. and her Funeral Mass on Friday, July 22 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1532 Linden Ave. Interment will be held at Carpinteria Cemetery immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to St. Joseph’s Church.

Heavy hearts and the bridge to a better place

In Orlando, Dallas, Minnesota and Baton Rouge, we have seen in recent weeks too many examples of humanity at its worst, ugly and violent. I’ve been grappling with my heightened emotions and thinking about how to talk with children about the human-caused tragedies that seem to pop up—literally pop up on my phone—with barely time to regroup between. I’m sad and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the scale of hurt and hopelessness and anger people are expressing. I’m sad and angry about the killing of people dedicated to keeping their communities safe who happened to be in an unlucky place at an unlucky time. Mostly I’m sad and tempted to put my head in the sand because it just feels too big to deal with. And I’ve wondered what my kids are noticing.

We know this: how we as adults deal with big and small tragedies steers how our kids react. We parents are our kids’ rocks, their compasses about how much the world gives and how much it takes from us. If children are very young, limit or avoid their viewing of the news. If we are emotional or if kids see something sad or disturbing on the news, they deserve an honest, ageappropriate, explanation and examples of strategies that can help us feel safe and can make a positive difference.

What should we say to children?

Fortunately, we can say that these major news events have happened far from Carpinteria and that we are safe. We can say that there are tragedies that are hard to understand and confusing, even to adults. It is not okay for children or adults to hurt others out of anger or frustration. We can, and should, talk in age-appropriate ways about racism and its unjust effects as a fact of modern life that we must work to overcome. We can talk about our country’s goal to treat all people as created equal, without regard to the color of our skin or the neighborhood we live in. For younger children, the

Children’s Project would be pleased to loan books that can help: “A Rainbow of Friends” by P.K. Hallinan, “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox, and Sesame Street’s “We’re Different, We’re the Same.” Just stop by our office at 5201 8th Street between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to borrow books.

Importantly, we can also talk with children about how we unfailingly see humans at their best, even in the face of unspeakable hate and violence. Heroes rush into danger to protect and save others. As Mr. Roger’s mother taught him, the helpers always come, and they personify goodness and peace. We can practice acts of goodness and peace in our own community. We can get to know our neighbors, thank those who help and protect us, and see ourselves as bridges to a more universally kind place. We can learn and grow as individuals, knowing the work of becoming our best selves is constant.

George Bush put it beautifully at the memorial service for the officers killed in Dallas, “At our best, we practice empathy, imagining ourselves in the lives and circumstances of others. This is the bridge across our nation’s deepest divisions. And it is not merely a matter of tolerance, but of learning from the struggles and stories of our fellow citizens and finding our better selves in the process.”

Halos Pitchforks

Stick it to ’em

A deputy on patrol in the wee hours of the morning on June 25 noticed a truck on Hickory Street parked in the red zone so he pulled over to cite its owner. A little digging made the officer aware that the registration was expired, but curiously it displayed a 2017 sticker. Noting that the sticker was improperly affixed and likely stolen, the officer peeled it off and stuck the vehicle with a citation for parking and lapsed registration.

He attempted to contact the driver at the address listed on the registration info to no avail. The following morning, the officer spotted the truck again, legally parked and with no sticker. The morning after that, he spotted the vehicle again, legally parked but this time with a sticker.

The officer inspected the new sticker and found that it was an old sticker, suspiciously weathered and likely stolen from another vehicle, the officer noted.

The officer’s database showed that the registration was still not current. Since it was 3 a.m., the officer elected to confiscate both plates on the vehicle and planned to visit the owner at a better hour.

No deal

An officer patrolling the rear parking lot of a Concha Loma apartment complex witnessed what he believed to be a “hand to hand street drug transaction” on July 7 at 4:30 p.m. One man, 32, entered the parking lot wearing a wife beater and backpack and did not see the officer. He walked up to another man, 37, in a carport and extended his hand. The other man, instead of reciprocating, said something to his cohort and he jerked his head around to view the officer’s vehicle. He then began indiscreetly stashing something into his pants.

Believing he’d just disrupted a hand to hand street drug transaction, the officer got out of his vehicle to chat with the men. They appeared nervous and sweaty, according to the officer, and the alleged dealer first informed the officer he was going to smoke a cigarette before saying he’d done nothing wrong. He was only visiting a friend.

The officer countered by questioning whether the man was about to sell drugs.

He said no, but the other man admitted that he was hoping to buy. The officer pulled him aside and asked what he was trying to purchase and for how much.

The man said meth for $40. The officer commented that it seemed like a pretty steep price, and the man said it was. He admitted to possessing a small amount of meth and turned it over.

The man suspected of dealing stuck to his guns. He hadn’t done anything wrong. The officer asked him where the drugs were and he said there weren’t any, but he admitted to having a meth pipe in his backpack. The officer arrested the man for the pipe and searched his waistband, which revealed two small bindles of the drug. He said it was all for him and not for selling. The officer arrested the man on suspicion of dealing meth.

He cited the other man for possession.

Cigarette sting

An officer spotted a man outside a Linden Avenue liquor store smoking a cigarette and approached him for the municipal code violation of smoking a cigarette in public. The officer discovered the man had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for being drunk in public and cited him for the warrant.

Deputies received a call about car tampering, most likely thievery, in progress at 2 a.m. on July 9. The caller reported two men, one in black hat, shirt and gloves, looking into vehicles on Linden Avenue above Carpinteria Avenue. The men skedaddled when they noticed they were being watched. When officers arrived, they could only catch one of the men, who was bicycling away.

The man, 21, explained that he was biking home from a bar, but officers pointed out that his home was the other way. He said he was recreationally biking despite the wee hours. Officers also questioned the man’s choice of attire and commented that he looked like a “nighttime thief.” (Officers did not provide a description of a day-time thief.) The man said he needed the hat and gloves because he was cold.

The man also told officers he had no criminal history. However, his rap sheet was long: burglary, robbery, possession of burglary tools and drugs.

He was arrested for tampering with vehicles.

Warning signs erected after Friday’s shark attack kept many weekend beach users in shallow water or in the sand.

Shark attack on seal keeps Jr. Guards dry

local lifeguards witnessed a white shark attack a seal about 40 yards off Holly beach last Friday morning, just a couple hours before about 1,000 kids were scheduled to compete in a Junior lifeguards competition. The incident took place around 7 a.m. on July 15 as city lifeguards were preparing for the annual Carpinteria Competition. “it was kind of a national Geographic moment,” said Morgan Youngs, aquatics Program Director for the City of Carpinteria.

Estimated at only 7 to 8 feet in length, the shark was likely a juvenile. Warning signs were placed along the beach after the attack, and water events for the Junior lifeguard competition were canceled. no further sightings were reported of either the seal or shark, and warning signs were removed on the morning of Tuesday, July 19.

The attack took place in front of the swim platform to the east of Holly avenue. Youngs said he was standing on the beach watching guards on paddleboards place buoys to mark paddle and swim courses when a group of instructors near him in the sand began to shout and point toward the water. He looked out to see the shark with a bloody seal in its mouth dipping down into the water. seagulls quickly flocked to the site.

Youngs said it was an exciting interaction to watch and concluded that, “it’s kind of bound to happen. There are seals and sharks in the water all the time.”

Youngs used his megaphone to tell the instructors in the water to return to the beach immediately.

Children from 10 different Junior Guard agencies arrived soon after the incident expecting to compete in water sports. instructors held beach events exclusively and worked to maintain the kids’ enthusiasm despite their ability to hold only three of the eight scheduled events.

Youngs said that by Tuesday, the program had resumed its normal water activities. only a few parents asked that their kids be kept out of the water.

Relay for Life Carpinteria walloped cancer with a $66,000 right hook last weekend.

The annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society exceeded its fundraising goal by $11,000 and introduced new and unique ways to raise awareness for the ubiquitous disease. Along with the traditional Relay for Life formula of team fundraising competition and 24-hour track walking, this year’s event featured giant lit-up letters spelling out “HOPE” from a foothill perch along Franklin Trail. It concluded with the Paddle Out for Hope, another well-loved local twist. In a thank you email to event Chair Nancy Garrison and other hard-working volunteers, Katharine Hanna of the American Cancer Society stated, “Without extraordinary people like you, the American Cancer Society could not continue to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research and provide local services, programs and cancer prevention education.”

She and her husband recently joined a fundamentalist church at his insistence. First he says the blessing, next she does, followed by each one of their two children. In the meantime our food gets cold. My husband then asks me to heat up his meal, which irritates my son-in-law. Meals with them are no longer a pleasant experience. My other daughter won’t even join us for joint meals anymore. What shall I do?

It is great to see them turn into a chrysalis and then turn into a butterfly. Put the plants in your yard, and the monarchs will find them. It’s good for our environment and a wonderful project for kids.

It’s never too late to start getting into shape, and these days, Carpinteria has as an abundance of fitness options and facilities to ignite every size fitness flame. This week and next, CVN visits movers and shakers that are helping Carpinterians burn fat, build muscle and live healthier lifestyles.

We’re a little bit more hands-on (than other programs),” said the gym owner who leads the classes with her brother, Tanner Wing. Looking to raise awareness for her Carpinteria Avenue box, Harding offers free introductory classes to help get the gym’s name out and give residents the opportunity to try CrossFit. Schedules include classes for kids, as well as hour-long sessions for members of all ages and skill levels. “I write the workouts every day, and I spend a lot of time doing it,” explained Harding. Empower Fitness, located on Via Real, just opened its doors last March. “I was waiting for a building to become available because in Carp, buildings are really hard to find,” said owner Emlynn Iannelli, who held boot camps at the beach for roughly five years before securing a gym space.

Empower Fitness offers cardio circuit and kickboxing, classic spin along with the hip-hop version and strength training at a slower pace.

The gym also offers childcare for select classes and/or times. “It’s building that community of a gym; everyone becomes friends in here,” concluded Iannelli.

Spark 45 serves a dual purpose in the community as a center for physical therapy and a venue for exercise. “I do physical therapy, which requires a doctor’s prescription,” said owner Danielle Bordenave, who opened the facility on Maple Avenue last February. “I also do private, personal training, and that’s for people who aren’t injured, who just want somebody to work out with.”

The workout element is based on the Lagree Fitness Training Method, named after founder Sebastien Lagree. It’s a 45-minute exercise—hence the name Spark 45—centered around a machine called a megaformer that consists of an elaborate pulley system. “It’s intense cardiovascular, which sets it apart from many other workouts,” explained Bordenave. “My clients refer the majority of my other clients to me,” she added. The unique methodology seems to be here to stay.

With one studio located on Palm Avenue, Rob Burke is expanding his exercise program to another locale on Carpinteria Avenue.

Called TurboFit, the 5,000-squarefoot facility is conducting its “soft” opening today, July 21. “The spinning classes had become so popular that we had to turn people away,” said Burke whose curriculum includes yoga, pilates, HIIT cycling and zumba, among others. Burke also holds boot camps down at the beach.

eleven Junior Lifeguards agencies with about 1,000 young athletes descended on Carpinteria city beaches on July 15 for a day of competition that proved much drier than usual. A white shark sighting just off the shore that morning resulted in the elimination of all water events and kept kids working their legs in the sand from start to finish.

The high energy game of flags is always a good show. Junior Guards dash to secure a hose section, aka “flag,” but there are always more contestants than flags.

A group, ages 14-17

Luis Salcedo was chosen for JG of the Week for his personality and effort change during week 5. He raised his hand for every workout, event or challenge and amazed instructors with his new found effort level. Charlotte Meister has had an amazing summer as a JG even with an injury. Her positive attitude and helpful efforts continue to be noticed by her instructors, and she really stood out last week during a swim workout. When she was asked to swim by her instructor even with an injured wrist, Charlotte agreed and swam the ocean buoy swim with one single arm!

B group, ages 12-13

For the B group boys, Brandon Rogers has been an exemplary junior guard.

Brandon finishes first in every swim activity and gives 100 percent every day. JG of the week for the girls is Claire Donahue, who has been lightning fast on the beach anchoring run relay and flags teams in competition.

C group, ages 9-11

Ainslee Alexander earned this spot for continuous smiley sportsmanship, training hard and demonstrating the rewards of hard training in her performance in the girls run relay which got first place at Carp Comp. Brett Persoon is a model JG. Every day he comes ready to work hard with a smile on his face. His efforts paid off at the Ca rpinteria Competition, where he placed third in beach flags.

He also shows his JG spirit by sweeping out the beach boat launch every day.

U12 Tritons make waves with third consecutive championship

Carpinteria Aquatics Club’s 12-andunder mixed water polo team found its way to another championship, this time coming in Division 1 of the Ventura Youth Water Polo league in Oxnard last Saturday afternoon. Although this season marked the toughest one of the year so far, the Tritons finished the regular season 4-3.

The Tritons found a clearer road to first place thanks to the withdrawal of South Coast Red, which has a chance to play in the Junior Olympics. Carpinteria went 3-0 in the season tournament championship beating Malibu Water Polo Club 12-3, Gold Coast 15-4 and the Titans of Rio Mesa 16-4.

While co-head coach Clifton Jones (who authored this article) was away with the 18-and-under boys team at the Shaver Lake Open, co-head coach Dylan Hathaway led the Tritons through the game sweep. Hathaway said he was proud of the team’s performance on Saturday, especially after a rough start against Gold Coast in the second game of the day.

“It was definitely a team win because we had everyone there this weekend, which is big for us as a 12–and-under team,” Hathaway said. “We have a solid core of seven players that can swim, pass and shoot without difficulty usually.

However, this weekend was how a full 14 players play together.”

The weekend before, Carpinteria lost its third game of the short summer season and the second to South Coast Red because the team lacked the core players it has relied on since its inception in the fall of 2015.

Tritons on Saturday found success because of the play from everyone, but especially Mateo Handall, Donovan Hart, Brandon Rogers, Diesel Slade, Reyn Clayton, Gavin Lohuis and Coby Gonzalez.

“The difference between the South Coast Red loss and this weekend was that the kids were really fired up to be playing in the season’s final tournament,” Hathaway said. “I really stressed that the first game was the most important against Malibu, but it actually was against Gold Coast. We started slow and we were able to come together after some difficulties in the first quarter to beat them 15-4.”

This latest championship win for the Tritons marks its third in the last year. The team also claimed the top spot in the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016.

“It is absolutely amazing that we were able to get first place this season, especially when this team started in the fall when they first starting playing the sport together. It is pretty unheard of you … I think that it will help them as they continue to play water polo,” Hathaway said.

Club SCene Carmen Cordero named 4-H scholarship recipient

Santa Barbara City College student Carmen MatiszCordero, daughter of Charisse and Michael Matisz-Cordero, is the recipient of the 4-H Club’s La Goleta Scholarship Award for 2015-2016. A member of Carpinteria and Goleta 4-H clubs since she was 5 years old, Matisz-Cordero has been involved in a variety of projects and remains concentrated on raising purebred show rabbits, which have competed successfully in local shows, exhibitions and fairs. Her 4-H tenure includes serving as vice president of community service for the Goleta 4-H Club, speaking in front of the Board of Supervisors on the importance of the 4-H program in Santa Barbara County and coordinating activities such as creek clean-ups, collections for the Santa Barbara Food Bank, service days at the Unity Shoppe. The 19-year-old is majoring in early childhood education and plans to transfer to U.C. Santa Barbara.

The Carpinteria Lions Club held a blood drive on July 9 at Carpinteria Community Church. According to club officials, 80 pints of blood were collected from volunteers.

Debra Herrick is the new club director and Alexa Gaddis has been promoted to assistant club director at the Carpinteria Club of the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County. Holding a Ph.D. in Spanish from U.C. Santa Barbara, Herrick previously served as the multi-arts director at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mission District in Santa Francisco. Before joining the Carpinteria Club as a staff member, Gaddis worked as head instructor with the Pacific Corinthian in the Channel Islands Harbor. Les Esposito joins A.M. Rotary Club

Past president of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning Debbie Murphy spoke on her recent participation in the Rotary national Polio immunization Day in india at the Rotary noon Club meeting on July 14. Rotary international takes credit along with the Center for Disease Control, the World Health organization, Un Children’s Fund and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the less than 20 new cases of wild poliovirus that have been reported worldwide as of July 2016.

This may surprise people that know me, but I’m having to search for new subjects to write about—something that makes me laugh or fires me up or touches my heart. I’ve written about rude drivers, funerals, health issues, local joys such as the library, school teachers, my grandkids, and on and on. If a topic excites me, I usually think about it for several days. (I do my best thinking in the shower, but that time is getting shorter and shorter with the drought.) After this contemplation, the writing seems to present itself once I sit down with my computer. The crucial issue is I have to be involved with my subject matter or have a strong opinion or want to send a message for the words to flow. But so far this month I’m at a loss for a topic.

I’m not exactly sure why nothing is jumping out at me, but maybe it’s because we’re being inundated with political messages to the point of nausea. The election is still months away but every news program every day has a whole slot on the upcoming election and the candidates themselves. Which foot did Trump insert in his mouth? Which lie did Hillary really say? How many bankruptcies has Trump had? Should Hillary have really stood by her man? Most of us, I think, would vote for the option “None of the Above” if given the chance. This would give us voters a “do over” to try to find some new candidates that we could be proud to have on the presidential ballot.

Or I could write about the issues facing the Carpinteria Unified School District? How do we maximize salaries and benefits for our credentialed staff so our schools can hire and keep premier teachers? How do we face issues of segregation among our schools and problems of equal opportunities? How do we make more effort to support bilingualism for all our students? How do we take action to sort out any inequalities among our various schools? Where and when are

such dialogues going to take place? I get overwhelmed just thinking about all these matters much less trying to write about them.

Perhaps I should focus more on Carpinteria positives. Our weather is awardwinning. We raise some of the most beautiful flowers in the world—not to mention the most beautiful avocados. We have a great “little” library with a great staff. We have Help and the Carpinteria Education Foundation and the Lions Club and Rotary and the Arts Center and so many more volunteers I can’t list them all.

Oh yes, we have the Coastal View. If you don’t see it in the Coastal View, it didn’t happen. And we have great local citizens that take pride in this city.

For a change, I could complain about the tourists. You know, the ones that make traffic back up all summer long and especially on Sunday nights when those same tourists have to go back to the reality of Los Angeles. But those tourists do spend money at our local hotels and shops and restaurants so I guess I should leave them alone.

Better I should focus on bicyclists. I’m amazed at how many bicyclists behave as if they own the road—or in some cases the sidewalks. They ride two deep sometimes, ignoring the cars stacking up behind them, or forget that stop signs are also meant for them or don’t think a turn signal might be a good idea to let automobile drivers know which direction the bicyclist is turning. Even more dangerous is the darting across several lanes of traffic cutting off cars that are much bigger than any person on a bike. More mutual respect between automobile drivers and bicyclists is definitely needed with the safety of both being the goal.

After all this I’m still not feeling it. I don’t want to write about health issues— I’m trying to ignore those. Fashion commentary is not my cup of tea. I don’t see enough movies to be a critic. I don’t eat out at enough different restaurants to be a gourmet (or foodie), and I have no control over who wins at Wimbledon. So I’m sorry, I’m going to have to “muse” a little longer until I come up with something a little more exciting.
