Long ago and far away, our caveman ancestors were purported to live in accordance with their natural environment, consuming a diet high in healthy fat in its wild form, unprocessed carbohydrates from gathering fruits and vegetables, as well as foraged nuts. It’s a new year and with the desire to get into great shape I’ve decided to adopt the principles of the Paleo diet, as well as start a new exercise plan to keep up with my saber-toothed tiger-fighting ancestors.

In getting back to basics you need to consider what was available 2.5 million years ago, pre-agricultural revolution and pre-commercial processing. There were no fillers or antibiotics and the goal for every caveman was to have the strength and energy to survive the environment in which he/she lived. Since I’ve tried every mainstream diet under the sun, this one would be no exception and was supported by the CrossFit gym I’d joined. I asked a trainer what set this way of eating apart from all others, and he let me know that it was not about weight loss as much as well-being. I guess I made an unhappy face because he was quick to let me know that fat loss, increased energy, better sleep and stress reduction was an automatic byproduct of the paleo lifestyle.

Basic guidelines for a paleo diet

1. Eliminate grains, dairy, legumes and processed foods 2. Only eat what runs, swims, flies, bleeds or breathes 3. If a caveman couldn’t eat it, you can’t As a chef, I had my worries. My life was built on delicious food and serving culinary creations that weren’t boring. Yet I was finding that more and more of my clients were complaining of food allergies and intolerances that kept them from

enjoying the meals they had once loved.

I’ve made the decision to go through my pantry and fridge to change the “style” of ingredients I purchase. While I was already living organic and hormone free, I found a few replacements for my regularly stocked items, such as grass-fed butter, raw honey and raw almond milk that would make the diet transition easier.

That said, for one month I have decided to restrict grains, beans, potatoes, salt and sugar to four days a week. If you’ve been to one of my classes, my two regular keywords are usually to add “butter and salt,” so cutting back is huge for me. Even if I’m going through a restriction phase to see how my body responds, I have no intention of bringing you along with me until I see the results. If I do, watch out, cause we’ll all be headed back to the cave together. Cheers to a healthy and happy 2017!

The city expects to put plans out to bid in February for the new play area at Memorial Park.

Memorial Park improvements on near horizon

the City of Carpinteria is gearing up to begin construction on Memorial park improvements that have been in planning in recent years. the project, which should be completed by June, features a new play area for children, along with picnic tables shaded by a pergola, decomposed granite walkways and benches surrounding the play area. the new play area is designed for children ages 2 to 12 and includes slides, swings and climbing structures meant to stimulate imagination. the play area is currently laid with wood chips, but recycled rubberized material will be the new base when construction is complete. neighbors discouraged adding a bathroom during the concept design, and current plans do not include one. the existing barbecue areas will remain as they are. of the project’s estimated total $400,000 cost, $350,000 will come from State Housing and Community Development Department grant funds.

Carpinteria was awarded the grant due to the increase in the low-income people’s Self Help Housing developments in the area.

Waiting period opens for Rincon Classic

As much an excuse for locals to surf their beloved Rincon with only five other competitors as a dog-eat-dog contest for top honors, the rincon Classic is a longstanding event with an uncanny history of running on some of the best days of surf in recent years. the waiting period for the competition opens Saturday, Jan. 14 and runs through the remainder of the winter surf season until organizers deem the forecast is right to run the weekend-long event. Competitor registration ran through the month of December with priority given to surfers who live in closest proximity to rincon, the “Queen of the Coast,” as the break is affectionately known. Divisions for pros, Mens, Juniors, Boys, Gremlins, Masters, Grand Masters, Legends, Longboards, Womens and Wahines, give competitors of all ages and genders an opportunity to compete with peers on the beautiful point waves of rincon.

Storms bring Carpinteria rainfall to above average

a cascade of storm systems moving through the state has left Carpinteria with 119 percent of normal rainfall for this point in the season. the rain year total has reached 7.75 inches, and January’s total is up to 2.96 inches. Countywide, the to-date rainfall total is at 131 percent of normal, but Lake Cachuma has only added 856 acre feet this month, bringing it to just 8.7 percent capacity. More rain is predicted for thursday, Jan. 12.

Linden Casitas update: Road closures and heavy equipment coming

Construction crews will be active at Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road in the coming weeks as work on the Caltrans Linden Casitas Project ramps up. Recent wet weather could set back the construction schedule slightly but Caltrans expects pile driving tests at Linden to begin soon, and the southbound Highway 101 on-ramp at Casitas Pass Road should close for up to two weeks starting this week.

At Linden, tests will be conducted to determine the required pile length for the overpass support structure. The three-foot-diameter steel piles will be up to 104-feet-long, and five test piles will be driven into the ground near the onramp to calculate the optimal pile length for bridge strength relative to soil conditions.

Depending on weather and soil- moisture levels, test piles could be delivered on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and pile driving could begin as early as Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Kirsten Ayars, project spokesperson, said that pile driving will be very loud, but will take place in a short timeframe during daylight working hours. Once the piles are in place, they will be tested with a very large piece of machinery that will arrive in pieces for onsite assembly. The hydraulic testing process will take more time but is much quieter than pile driving, Ayars said. Determining proper pile length is essential to building sufficient support for the new bridge and the vibrations of heavy vehicle traffic, as well as seismic activity.

A surveying crew has been contacting residents close to the site to take photos prior to pile driving. Ayars said that it is unlikely the work will cause any property damage, but vibrations can lead to cracks in stucco and Caltrans is proactively assessing the status of nearby structures prior to work commencing.

At Casitas Pass Road, Southern California Edison has been relocating utilities for construction. The southbound highway off-ramp at Casitas Pass Road was closed during the day on Jan. 11, and the southbound on-ramp will close

again for two weeks starting next week.

During the day, Casitas Pass Road will have one lane open in each direction over Highway 101, but between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m., alternating lane closures will occur to allow for equipment movement and lane re-striping.

The driveway closest to the highway for the am/pm ARCO station will be closed for improvements during the two-week period, and customers will be restricted to using the other driveway near IHOP. For more information, visit SBROADS.com.

There are many retired or handicapped people with a great amount of experience and expertise and the HOST program allows these people to be an active part of the community. Ernest E. “Pinky” Zaragoza 1/16/1942 – 1/5/2017

Ernest E. “Pinky” Zaragoza, 74, of Carpinteria, Calif. died at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Jan. 5, 2017.

“Pinky” was born in Santa Barbara on Jan. 16, 1942. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Santa Barbara High School, Class of ’62. As a proud Don, Ernie lettered in track, played football and was a member of the Glee Club. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962, served as a specialist and was honorably discharged in 1965. After serving his country, “Pinky”

worked at Santa Barbara Monument for several years. He served as manager of Harley-Davidson of Santa Barbara for approximately seven years and was a bus driver for Santa Barbara MTD for 18 years before retiring in 2005. “Pinky” was a member of the Moose Lodge and of Los Amigos Motorcycle Club. He received a medal for participation in the Bus Rodeo for MTD. “Pinky” is survived by his wife, Carol C. Zaragoza of Carpinteria; two children Ted and Maria Villa of San Fernando Valley; sisters Anita Valencia of Carpinteria and Beatrice “Lola” (John) Young of Modesto, Calif.; brothers Gilbert (Frances) Zaragoza of Texas, Alex (Adrienne) Zaragoza of Bishop, Calif.; Raymond (Gail) Zaragoza of Arizona; Raúl Zaragoza of Santa Barbara; and Mario (Connie) Zaragoza of Carpinteria; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and 31 nieces and nephews.

The Rosary service will take place at St. Joseph Church on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., also at St. Joseph’s, followed immediately by interment at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Hunting season: School Board seeks new supe

By Peter Dugré The Carpinteria Unified School District has begun its hunt for a new superintendent, and the Board of Education prefers one who has a passion for education and enough CEO instincts to lead an organization of 300 employees and a $30 million annual budget. On Jan. 10 at the first school board meeting of 2017, boardmembers told recruiters from the Santa Barbara County Office of Education about the qualities they desire in a new CUSD superintendent in order to refine the search for the top local educator ahead of next school year.

“I’m looking for an educator with a proven track record in the classroom,” commented boardmember Jaclyn Fabre.

“He or she should know their stuff about educating students. That’s the number one priority.” She and other boardmembers also prioritized a person with a penchant for communication in order to build a bridge between staff and administration.

Former Superintendent Micheline Miglis’ contract was mysteriously cut short by the board the day before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. She was replaced by interim superintendent Dr. Brian Sarvis. Sarvis served his last day in that capacity on Jan. 10, due to earning limits related to his retirement from Santa Barbara schools. Now Canalino School Principal Jamie Persoon has stepped into the interim role for the remainder of the school year.

What qualities would you like in a new superintendent?

Carpinteria Unified School District to hold public input session on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. at Canalino School Cafeteria for community members on Jan. 18, at which opinions can be voiced about the school district and what type of individual should lead it.

Boardmembers discussed at some length what salary to advertise for the superintendent position before deciding on $175,000 annually that will be “open for negotiation.” The figure is based on comparable districts and what the district had already budgeted to pay Miglis in 2017-2018.

“Money talks in this kind of situation.

It’s important that you don’t shortchange yourself by advertising too low and limiting the pool,” advised Al Zorano, one of the recruiters.

School board members also stressed the importance of finding a person who is bilingual, has curriculum experience and experience working in a small, diverse

district with involved families.

School board President Andy Shaeffer said, “We need someone willing to roll up his sleeves and get to work. We need someone who’s not just a figurehead. We need to weed people out who think they’ll come here and be just a figurehead. As we’ve seen over the past year, there are too many hats to wear, too many things to do.”

School foods czar talks Pizza Mondays and free lunch

CUSD child nutrition and wellness coordinator Laurel Schwartz informed the school board that pizza remains a popular item in school cafeterias throughout the district, but the product being slung to CUSD students isn’t your average hotand-ready Little Caesars’ pie. At her presentation on the food services on Jan. 10, she said Little Caesars makes the pizza on special contract with the schools using whole grain flour dough, low fat cheese, low sugar sauce and must meet new, reduced sodium standards enacted by United States Department of Agriculture for school lunches in 2016.

Schwartz, new to the district this school year, also informed the school board that she has applied to make CUSD a 100 percent free lunch district. As is, 59 percent of students qualify for reduced or free lunch, which could make CUSD

qualify for a federal program to make lunch free for every student. The all-free program would eliminate the need for families to apply for assistance, a process that takes one year. Districts with a majority free or reduced lunch can qualify.

“For some students our meal is the only nutritious meal they get in a day,” Schwartz said.

Other initiatives undertaken by Schwartz include a program to limit food waste, outreach to families to ensure that every student who qualifies gets a free or reduced lunch and vigilance in overseeing nutrition in the cafeteria menu.

Schwartz has also ditched sporks in favor of biodegradable plastic forks and spoons. “We’re moving toward less packaging in our eating ware,” she said.

School board members are interested in using worm bins to digest food waste as an educational and interactive project that would make soil for the high school agriculture program.

Measure U Citizens’ Committee appointed

The school board voted on Jan. 10 to appoint seven community members to oversee the spending of Measure U dollars in upgrading local schools. Committee members are Wally Burquez, Paul Foley, Christie Cooney, Clyde Freeman, Paul Pettine, Denver G. Compton and Sally Green.

City requests pier repair delay for seals

The California Coastal Commission will consider a request this week by Venoco Inc. to repair Casitas Pier, and the Carpinteria City Council has requested that the work only be allowed after the harbor seal pupping season, which ends May 31. The decision to send the CCC a comment letter was made at the council’s Jan. 9 meeting, where members of the public voiced concern that if seals are startled by the pier work it could put the young pups at risk.

“I understand the importance of fixing the pier, but I also have witnessed several seal births and know how easy it is for something to go wrong,” said Susan Allen, longtime member of Seal Watch, a group that monitors seal activity on the beach and helps to keep the public off the beach during the seals’ pupping season.

Four pilings on the west side of the pier’s end were damaged last August and need replacing to allow boat access on both sides of the pier. Larry Huskins, operations manager at Venoco, told the council that access to both sides is particularly important during winter months when swells and storms can make one side a safer docking option. Given the proximity of the seals and the timing of the proposed work, Venoco is seeking permission from the CCC to install new steel pilings in a process that will not require pile driving.

Built in the 1960s, Casitas Pier is owned

by the city and leased to Venoco, which uses it to access supply and crew boats for offshore platforms. The seal rookery is located to the east of the pier base. Seals are unfazed by regular pier activity, but irregular noises and movements can cause disturbances. The city closes the beach from Dec. 1 to May 31, when about 50 to 100 seal births take place annually.

Mayor Fred Shaw and Councilman Al Clark are both involved in the Seal Watch organization. Shaw said he would consider recommending that the work take place after April 1, by which point most of the season’s seal pups are born.

Clark, however, argued that if the work were truly critical, Venoco would have applied for a permit earlier or requested an emergency permit.

The CCC will consider Venoco’s permit at its Jan. 13 meeting in San Luis Obispo.

open Streets modified

The evolution of plans for Carpinteria’s first Open Streets event was presented to the council at its Jan. 9 meeting.

Project coordinator Robin Elander and Traffic Solutions Director Kent Epperson said that initial street closure plans have been reduced to allow more traffic flow during the all-day event proposed for Saturday, April 1.

Open Streets events, which promote health and alternatives to driving, are

held in several cities around the nation.

Initial plans for Carpinteria included the closure of 8th Street between Linden and Carpinteria Creek, but the street will now be open to traffic at Palm Avenue. Linden Avenue’s closure, formerly planned to run from the beach to Carpinteria Avenue, will now be open at 9th Street.

The full length of 9th Street, from Linden Avenue to 7th Street, is still planned for closure.

“This event is all about community engagement and involvement,” said Elander. Unlike the California Avocado Festival, Epperson said, Open Streets won’t pack the streets with vendors and activity. The idea is to keep streets open so people can safely ride bikes, walk dogs, push strollers and play.

engineering contract awarded for rincon trail

The council awarded a $90,000 contract to Bengal Engineering for the next planning phase of the Rincon Trail project to connect the east end of Carpinteria Avenue with Rincon County Park. The 5,000-foot pedestrian and bicycle trail, which includes a 110-foot-long bridge over the railroad tracks, is expected to cost $7.8 million. The city recently secured a state grant for $6.8 million, and trail construction is anticipated to begin in 2019, when funds will be awarded.

New grant committee members appointed

The council reappointed Jane Benefield and appointed new members Phylene Wiggins and Brian Klinge for four-year terms on the Community Development Block Grant Committee. The committee advises the council in how to award funds for social service groups in the Carpinteria area. Funds are administered through the County of Santa Barbara Housing and Community Development. Michelle Robertson and Lisa Guravitz, decided to step down from the committee.

Weinberg and HoSts honored

Former Carpinteria Mayor and perennial volunteer Dick Weinberg was honored at the council meeting for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Carpinteria community. Weinberg volunteers with the HOST Program and has served on several local boards, including Carpinteria Beautiful, Carpinteria Arts Center and HELP. Councilman Gregg Carty thanked Weinberg for his many years of service.

“You’re a large part of why Carpinteria is the great city that it is,” he said.

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the city’s HOST program, the council also honored 15 volunteers who have given their time to the HOST program since its inception.

“La La Land”

Yes, 2016 was a rough year. Elections, riots, hacking, violence, celebrity deaths, my cracked iPhone screen … ugh, it sucked. But “La La Land” was a bright spot. In fact, it may even manage to turn a few frowns upside down.

Start with two infectious characters—Sebastian and Mia—played by two very infectious actors (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, respectively).

Twirl them together with quick, sharp (but never too cross) dialogue. Have them dance, and sing, and have them do it well (but not too well!). Make it upbeat, and maybe even a little naïve, but still real.

That’s filmmaker Damien Chazelle’s recipe for this ray of light in an otherwise dreary year.

The beauty of it all really does start with those two infectious characters.

Sebastian is a musician—a piano player, to be precise. And he’s obsessed with

jazz. But not just any jazz—not that hokey elevator music jazz, or that newfangled poppy jazz. He’s obsessed with real jazz.

Louis Armstrong. Duke Ellington. Real jazz.

Mia is an actress. And a barista. Really, she’s an actress. She auditions, and auditions, and auditions. And she’s good! But it’s a tough biz. So although, really, Mia is an actress, she’s also a barista.

Both she and Sebastian have big dreams—huge, even foolish, dreams. But when they meet each other at a party in L.A., those dreams still have more to do with their REM sleep than anything in their waking lives. Mia catches Sebastian, who promises he’s a “serious musician,” abasing himself by playing with an awful ’80s cover band wearing awful ’80s attire.

But he of course doesn’t fail to remind Mia that she is, yup, a barista.

Their relationship, though initially antagonistic, is instantly charming. They trade lighthearted barbs. Then they dance while singing about how lame the gorgeous sunset is, and about how bad a time they are having singing and dancing.

They’re of course made for each other.

Mia hates jazz, but Sebastian teaches her not to. He also urges her to keep dreaming, and even to write a play she’s been thinking of. She does, though she worries that it’s too nostalgic. But Sebastian reminds her, “That’s the whole point!”

And it is the point! “La La Land” itself is a warmly nostalgic throwback to Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Debbie Reynolds, James Cagney—to “Singin’ in the Rain,” “An American in Paris,” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” And just in time. When

you’re down on your luck, all these movies so expertly make you feel all right—like the world isn’t really against you, and like your big break is just around the corner.

But maybe this sort of nostalgia is not the whole point.

Sebastian is an old-school purist about jazz—he’s his own kind of throwback—yet he also gets, or learns to get, that jazz itself is about innovation, improvisation, evolution and about adapting to new, uncertain and unforeseen rhythms. In the same way, this movie is not just about aching for the good old days, though it’ll make you ache, and it’ll make you appreciate the good old days. It’s also about finding a better—perhaps a little naïve, but still real—way to approach what’s to come.

“La La Land” is the perfect cap to 2016. For although nostalgia is the name of its game, it doesn’t ask you to completely forget the real world here and now (which, I needn’t remind you, sometimes sucks). It just nudges you into thinking about it differently—with a smirk, if not a smile. It may even put a little hop in your gait as you two-step your way to tomorrow.

“La La Land” is rated PG-13 for some language.

It was hot and steamy on the Franklin Trail today after yesterday’s rain. Parts of the trail were buckled up from the rain, you could see how the rain and people change the trail as they walk. Though I was slightly concerned about getting hurt, I did have cell phone signal all the way in case I needed help. Surprisingly, because of all the time I’ve put in hiking phase 1 and 2, I was up the trail to the top and back down, the full 16 miles. By 1:30 that afternoon I was sitting at Delgados eating

rajas con pollo. It was exhilarating to have finished the trail.

In retrospect, starting on the trail heading up to the top, I felt alone and a bit nervous, yet determined to complete what I started. I was surprised by the different ecosystems in Phase 3. There were areas of shaded ferns, then yuccas, sandstone rock formations and beautiful little valleys. There was no water running though I walked through a sandstone creek bed and definitely wanted to finish the trail before the rain started and the creek bed filled. There was a surprising coyote scat area though not a one in sight. There were freshly cut stumps in the middle of the trail in some areas and in others, long grass covered the trail.

Clouds came down in and around me. It was quiet with only the sound of birds hiding in the bushes in anticipation of the rain. It was definitely unknown territory.

When I could see that I was reaching the ridgeline, there was a mylar birthday ballon tied to a bush. I was really happy when I reached the sign at the crest. Job halfway done.

How has hiking changed other areas of your life?

Out of being involved in the Franklin Trail, I joined Los Padres Forest Association (LPFA) and have become a swamper and a camp chef for trail work projects. A swamper is the person who follows the sawyers (workers who have the chainsaws). The sawyers cut the fallen trees, and the swamper clears the brush, logs and trees branches off the trail. I swamp because I really don’t like carrying heavy tools on the trail.

I used to feel that camping and backpacking were boring, yet now with LPFA, I have found purpose along with a new love of the outdoors. I got to volunteer on the backside of the trail last spring along Alder Creek at the Alder Camp.

I’m training for a pack-in trip with LPFA to do trail work and cook and I’m eager to do a horse pack trip this year. I will volunteer on multiple trail projects this year.

Before the Franklin Trail, I was hiding—leading a small life in the world. I wasn’t going far beyond my desk at the office. Now I have a new zest for life. I’m full of love and appreciation for my life and everyone I have met since starting.

Every time I come down the trail, my head is clear and I feel accomplished. I have made over 100 new friends with the hikes and challenges on the trail.

Anything else you would like to say?

Franklin Trail for me is a great opportunity for the young people in our community to experience the wilderness.

They can now go from Carpinteria into the backcountry with friends.

Should you decide to hike to the top of the trail, know that it is a 16-mile journey. Take sufficient water, food and clothing for changing weather. Leave no trace. Enjoy.

“Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists” by Carpinteria author Sam Bennett is a book that offers just what its title suggests—namely, help getting “unstuck” and moving towards one’s creative goals. In celebration of St. Valentine’s month, Porch will host its eighth annual show of love-inspired artwork, titled “HeARTburn.” Interpretations of the show’s theme in all genres will be accepted at the ingathering on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Porch. Artwork not selected for the show must be picked up on Sunday or Monday, Jan. 29 or 30. All art must be available for sale, and artists receive 70 percent of the sale price (Porch receives 20 percent, and 10 percent goes to the Carpinteria Arts Center). A maximum of three pieces per artist may be presented for showing, framed and/or finished for display. A reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. While there are no entry fees, artists with work accepted for the show are asked to bring two bottles of wine or sparkling beverage for the reception.

I am not one to make New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I constantly set goals for myself, sometimes achieving them and sometimes failing––like most people.

Over the course of the last couple of months, I noticed that I was getting lazy and eating out more, buying what I call convenience meals: partially prepared foods that come in some sort of container.

I am a bit frustrated with myself for this, because generally I try to reduce the amount of plastic I am using, but it is hard to avoid when getting take-out. So over the holidays I started really committing myself to reducing my plastic use.

This is not an easy challenge. Plastic is everywhere. I took a look in my bathroom and was immediately overwhelmed with plastic products. From toothbrushes to lotions, almost everything is contained in plastic. I know I have written about waste multiple times in this column, but this is a personal challenge for me. I think plastic is a magical product of science. We have figured out how to create a sterile, longlasting substance that can help improve our lives in many ways, but we take it for granted and use it for everything.

My first step is to avoid take-out foods or partially prepared meals. This is a good place to start because we live in an area where we have access to lots of fresh produce. I can easily walk into a grocery store or stop by a farm stand or farmers market and purchase my produce free of plastic. I bring my own cloth produce and grocery bags, try to only buy what I think I will actually use, and voila! I have made a step in the right direction away from non-renewable resources.

My next step is cleaning supplies and detergents. If you ever walk down the household cleaning supplies isle of any store, you will notice that even the most environmentally friendly products come

packaged in plastic. But I already know that most of those things can be made at home for a fraction of the price. Again, this comes down mostly to convenience.

I could buy a spray bottle of cleanser, or I could make my own at home (time it took: two minutes). Things like vinegar, baking soda, lemon and Borax are already found around my house, and all of those can be used for multiple things, from laundry detergent to drain cleaner (seriously, I cleared my kitchen drain using vinegar, baking soda and hot water).

The hardest step, as I mentioned, is toiletries. How do you rid yourself of lotions and hair products and makeup that comes in plastic? I am, after all, a female who lives in today’s modern society and enjoys getting dressed up now and then. I am not well versed on making my own skin care products and I have very sensitive skin, so I have to be careful what I use. There are options for shampoo and conditioner bars, recipes for do-it-yourself versions, and even something called the no-poo method, which eliminates shampoo completely. I haven’t yet made the leap in this area but as I run out of these items in the next six months, my challenge to myself is to replace these with better versions.

I know that I am not perfect in my quest to go plastic free. I know people who are much better at it than I am, and I read blogs by people who have almost successfully eliminated plastic from their lives. I also know that as a scientist and someone who is constantly trying to understand how to make less of an environmental impact, I most likely will not ever be completely plastic free. I have the utmost respect for those who are able to meet that goal, but for now if I want to eat out I will opt for eating at the restaurant on real dishes instead of getting take-out and not take the easy path if it means using more plastic.

Small Business of the Year: Meister & Nunes, PC

Craig Meister and Shelley Nunes will be honored on Jan. 21 as owners of the 2016 Small Business of the year. The pair of CPAs will collect scores of hugs and handshakes and be lauded before a crowd of 300-plus community members. Then, poof, they’ll disappear for the next three months. It’s tax season, and Meister and Nunes, PC has 900 clients whose taxes need prepping

by April 18.

“It’s really very busy,” said Nunes. “We do whatever it takes to get the work out the door.” That means hiring three part-time employees, and working long hours six or seven days a week.

This year’s tax season marks Meister’s 35th in the biz.

He and his wife moved to Carpinteria with their two children in the 1970s. After a few years as a controller for various companies he struck out on his own, opening an office in Summerland from which he did taxes, bookkeeping and small businesses services in 1982. In 2007, he moved into his current Carpinteria office at 1101 Eugenia Place.

Nunes grew up in Carpinteria and worked for Meister for several years before she and her husband moved to Palm desert in 2003. She went back to school to earn a bachelors degree and get her CPA license, and all the while she kept in contact with her old boss. In 2014, when it was time to “come home,” as Nunes said, Meister welcomed her back. Meister and Nunes, PC incorporated in 2015.

The two accountants have a similar approach to the business, and Meister trusts that when he retires his clients will be in good hands with Nunes. “I’m no spring chicken,” Meister said, though committing to a retirement date has been a challenge. “In Shelley’s mind it’s three years. In my mind it’s one year. In my wife’s mind it was last year,” he chuckled.

Closing the door on a 35-year career is difficult for Meister, who has several long-time clients who refuse to make a business move until they consult him. Having never advertised, he built his success on loyal customers and word-of-mouth referrals. deep involvement in the community also makes Meister a trusted advisor. He led the Carpinteria High School Boosters Club when his kids were in school, has been a member of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria for 20 years, and served in the California

With his help, countless talented entrepreneurs have developed successful enterprises. “There’s a feeling of accomplishment when you can help someone understand their business better,” he said. “And it becomes second nature after a while.”

A career built on number crunching isn’t for everyone, but both Meister and Nunes genuinely enjoy their work.

“I don’t understand how someone could sit down and paint a picture,” Meister said, but numbers he does understand. To that Nunes chimed in, “We make our own pictures with the numbers.”

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce annually chooses just one small business to honor from a host of nominees. Chamber representative donna Lemere described why this year’s award will go to Meister and Nunes: “Their business success does not depend on the all familiar social media flash mentality, but instead on values such as dependability, honesty, integrity, compassion, a strong work ethic, and friendly, optimistic natures. Both Craig and Shelley as well as their staff go above and beyond to serve all clients in a positive manner.”

Large Business of the Year: Mission Linen Supply

BY Lea BoYd While Mission Linen Supply receives Carpinteria’s Large Business of the year award at the Community Awards Banquet on Jan. 21, a look beyond the shining spotlight will reveal why. Those napkins used to dab damp eyes and save formalwear from spills? Mission Linen. Those black and red tablecloths that help transform the Boys & Girls Club gymnasium into an elegant banquet hall? Mission Linen. And what’s really important is that the Community Awards Banquet is just one of dozens of local nonprofit events where the company’s generosity is evident.

“Every organization that I personally know benefits from Mission Linen’s philosophy of giving back to the communities in which they live and work,” said Terry Hickey Banks, Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce representative. “Their philosophy is not just words. They truly live it.”

The Santa Barbara-based company was founded in 1930 by George “Ben” Page as a one-man laundry operation. over the years, Mission Linen expanded its services to include linen and uniform rentals as well as the service and sale of apparel, mats and janitorial products. Still owned by the family of founder Ben Page, Mission has grown to serve five western states with more than 2,500 employees and 43 facilities.

“We are, at the heart, a service company,” said Mission Linen President/CEo John Ross. Customers range from small eateries with a handful of tables to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Sansum Clinic. The Palms in Carpinteria has been a client since 1951, and Carpinteria Unified School District since the 1970s.

Staff also matters to Mission Linen, as evidenced by the average employee’s tenure of 15 years. David Taggart, pictured at far left above, has clocked in at Mission Linen for 62 years. His is the friendly face behind the wheel of the company’s 1923 Model T that chugs along the route of many area parades.

Carpinterian Curtis Lopez has worked for Mission Linen for 27 years. He managed various plants and rose through the company ranks to his current position of purchasing director. An active member of the

Carpinteria community, Lopez is a long-time member of the Carpinteria Lions Club and a boardmember for Carpinteria Education Foundation and Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Through Lopez, Mission Linen has become a prominent sponsor and in-kind donor to a wide array of Carpinteria causes. Lopez said that it’s part of what makes the company unique and brings him pride in his work. “They give us the liberty to help,” he said.

Canalino and Carpinteria Family School tapped into the holiday spirit last month by adopting people and pets in need through the Giving Tree project. Stefany Zimmerman, mother of a Canalino fourth-grader, spearheaded the Giving Tree, through which over 100 Canalino and CFS families adopted Carpinteria families and the Simi Valley Missing Pets organization. Members of the Student Council prepared tags for all the gifts, and Carpinteria Children’s Project’s parent group wrapped the items and passed them out to the families. “This has been an amazing experience of giving for our students and parents,” reported school counselor Shanna Hargett.

Arts Center offers after-school classes

The Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave., has a number of new classes for children ages TK to middle school. After School Art for Children Ages K-5th grade will be offered in two sessions of eight Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The first begins Jan. 31, and the second begins April 4. Instructor Laurie Pincus will help students develop techniques in a wide variety of media including pencil, crayon, marker, charcoal, pastels, paint, clay, collage, printmaking and fabric. The cost is $120 members/$132 non-members.

Mommy/Daddy/Grandma and Me offers a chance for an adult and a child age 4-11 to participate in two, eight-week sessions on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The first begins Feb. 2 and the second on April 6. Pincus will lead children and their adult companions in a new project each week utilizing various materials and mediums.

The cost is $160 per pair for members/$176 per pair for non-members.

After School Art for Middle School Students begins Wednesday, Feb. 1 and continues for eight weeks each Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Session Two begins Wednesday, April 5. CHS girls soccer trounces Bishop

On a cold, rainy afternoon, the Carpinteria High School girls soccer team soundly defeated Bishop Diego 8-0 at Valley Memorial Stadium on Jan. 10.

The win lifts the Warriors to 2-0 in the Frontier League and evens their record to 4-4 overall.

Although the bulk of the play was at the Cardinals’ end in the first eight minutes, Bishop Diego managed to earn a corner kick at the Warrior end at the 10-minute mark. And again, it was Estrada blasting in her second goal to put the team up 2-0.

Dayne Wagner then began to control the midfield for the Warriors, setting up the offense. “(Wagner) calms the game down, she has a good tempo,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. As a result, teammate Alejandra Alvarez found room on the left flank near the 14-minute mark. Her shot, floating high into the net, made it a 3-0 lead. Alvarez would also have three assists for the game to go along with the goal. Near the 32nd minute, Ava Gropper came into the game for the Warriors, and seconds later she added to the lead, making it a 4-0 game.

Four minutes later, she scored another goal to give Carpinteria a 5-0 lead, which the Warriors took into the half.

January 6 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team lost a home Tri-Valley league game to St. Bonaventure, 50 to 26. The warriors found themselves down 14-1, missing five free throws. “The lack of scoring was not because of their defense but rather from the lack of any execution,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales. The warriors scored 11 points in the second period to bring the score to 26-12 at the half. “i did not prepare them well enough to be able to compete tonight, so i will do better job of preparing our guys,” added gonzales. Carpinteria is 8-6 overall, and 0-1 in league.

January 5 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team fell to Santa Paula by a score of 64-48. Senior Monique Sanchez led the way with 16 points for the warriors, while her senior teammates Tori Kelley and Harmony Reed added 13 points apiece. “Tonight in our matchup with Santa Paula we were able to beat them in two of the four quarters, but weren’t able to pull off the win,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant. “(Reed) had a good game down low, putting together 13 points on drives and free throws,” added Bryant. The warriors record stands at 6-5.

January 9 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team came out to compete against Channel islands, and walked away from warrior gym with a 43-41 victory.

Senior Tori Kelley scored 14 points to lead Carpinteria, while her senior counterpart Monique Sanchez pitched in six, and junior Kayana Diaz also added six. “when we saw them earlier in the season they scored a lot of the points off fast breaks and in transition,” said Warrior coach Amy Bryant. “I firmly believe that our win tonight came from our ability to get back in transition and play lockdown defense,” added Bryant. Eight of the 11 players who entered the game for Carpinteria, scored for the warriors. Carpinteria’s record stands at 7-5.

Girls water polo

January 10 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team traveled to crosstown rival Cate for the first game back from winter break, falling to the Rams, 3-2. Celia Foster, Ella Hendricks and Aparna Iyer scored in the first half for the Rams before the Carpinteria defense shut down Cate in the second half. Senior goalie Nicole Poulos recorded 14 saves and five steals. Offensively, the Warrior goals came in the first and fourth quarters, both courtesy of senior Leilanie Silva. The defensive duel came down to a final Warrior possession in which a last second, half-court shot by Poulos bounced off the Cate goal’s corner.

January 6 – The Carpinteria High school boys soccer team got its first win of the season as they traveled to Santa Paula and defeated the Cardinal team by the score of 1-0. Gabriel Barajas assisted by Alex Ramirez drove the ball to the top of the 18 and unleashed a shot that crossed the goal line in the upper right hand corner, out of the reach of the Santa Paula keeper, with nine minutes left in regulation. “Brian Garcia stepped into the keeper position for only his second game this season and made save after diving save,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. One of the saves occurred with a minute remaining to help preserve the win. “Other notable players that made key contributions are Alberto Arroyo, Solomon Nahooikaika, Abel Gutierrez and Eddie Mendoza,” added Quintero. Carpinteria’s overall record moves to 1-6-2, with a league record of 1-0-0.

January 7 – The Cate School girls basketball team fell to the Fillmore Flashes by a score of 48-27. Elle Smith ended the game with eight points and Amber Thiery finished the game with seven. Maisie Oswald, Sarah Polowczak, Daphne McKeefry, Maya Blattberg, Morgan Prinz and Piper Brooks each scored two points. “Though the Rams did not pull out a win today, the future looks bright,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. “The Rams got tired, but executed offensively and learned the importance of boxing out under the basket.”

January 10 – The Cate School girls basketball team fell to grace Brethren by a score of 62-25. Maya Blattberg and Amber Thiery finished the game with eight points. Georgie Douglas had two put backs on rebounds for a total of four. Mariam Soliman, Kaliyah Dorsey and Laura Vences chipped in two each, while Elle Smith added a free throw. “Although the Rams had a much better finish to the game than their start, the 27-point deficit they created in the first half was a hard one to take back,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta.

January 6 – The Cate School boys soccer team opened league play with a 4-3 overtime loss to nordhoff. The Rams scored in the sixth minute when team captain Christian Herman took a pass from Juan magalhaes and slotted it past the keeper to the far post. The score was knotted at the half, but the Rangers came out of the break and immediately finished corner kicks in the 42nd and 44th minutes, putting the Rams in a 3-1 hole. in the 48th minute, freshman Harry Corman booted a corner kick that Herman nodded into the back of the net. And then in the 74th minute, Magalhaes buried a penalty kick that came as a result of baker Fox being fouled in the box. with the game tied at 3-3, the two teams headed to overtime where, just three minutes in, Cate’s own defender deflected a Nordhoff cross into the Rams net to give the Rangers the win. “i was super-encouraged by the way we started the game, but we didn’t play with sustained energy for fairly long portions of the game and we paid the price for it,” said Cate coach Pete Mack.

Cate had three players in double digits: junior marko Pliso with 16 points, senior mason mackall who also scored 16, and freshman thomas nettesheim had 10. “(Mackall) was stunning tonight with just two blocks shy of a triple double, 16 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks,” said Cate coach Andy gil. “Very pleased with the terrific effort on both ends of the court, for freshman (Nettesheim), his second game back from a broken hand he suffered in tryouts,” added gil. The Rams improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league.

HOA fees

On Jan. 3 a Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to a condominium complex on Carpinteria Avenue on a report of someone having stolen packages that were mailed to a residence there and dropped off on the patio. A neighbor had told the reporting party that she had seen a man from another condo in the complex take the packages into his residence. When the deputy arrived, the neighbor told him that she and her husband had also had packages taken, and that she had gone to the residence where she’d seen the man bring the items. The woman said that when she knocked on the door, two men answered the door and “acted” like they didn’t speak English. From the open doorway the woman said she saw two rugs and some bowls that she had ordered inside. The woman demanded her property back and one of the men helped her carry the items back to her condo.

The men said they did not know who took the items, and neither the woman nor the man who first called wanted to press charges because they were afraid of retaliation in the way of vandalism to their property.

Too young

On Dec. 27 at approximately 11:45 p.m., a 20-year-old man was driving a pickup truck eastbound on Via Real when two Sheriff’s deputies driving westbound saw that he did not have the headlights on.

Upon pulling the pickup over, a deputy asked the driver for his license, but he did not have one. Also, the deputy smelled alcohol on the young man’s breath, and tried to perform a Breathalyzer test, but had to call CHP to use their machine. The man’s BAC was .04, well under the usual legal limit, but since he is under 21 any alcohol in his system is illegal. The man was cited for driving without a license and for the .04 BAC and released at the scene. The pickup, which the man stated belonged to a friend, was towed.

New Year’s revels

On New Year’s Eve at approximately 9 p.m., a Sheriff’s deputy saw a woman driving a gray sedan westbound on Carpinteria Avenue near Dump Road at 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. Initiating a traffic stop at Casitas Pass Road, a deputy then approached the driver and asked where she was coming from and where she was going. The woman’s speech was slurred, and the deputy noted a strong smell of alcoholic beverages coming from her.

The woman fumbled with her purse and when the deputy asked her what she

was doing, she said that she was trying to find something that had her address on it so she could tell him where she was going. The deputy told the woman that he smelled alcohol on her breath, and that he wanted to perform a field exam to determine if she was in a safe condition to drive.

When the woman got out of her car, the deputy noted that her gait was unsteady.

The deputy stated that he tried multiple times to instruct the woman on how he wanted her to perform the test, and asked her if it would be easier for her to perform the test if she took off her high heel shoes. After removing her shoes, the woman became belligerent when the deputy repeated his instructions to her.

She began yelling, “Just take me to jail,” and said that she did not want to perform the test the deputy asked of her.

The woman had also said that she had had one shot of vodka about an hour earlier. When she became belligerent the deputy arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence. A second deputy searched the woman’s car as the arresting deputy placed the woman in the back of his vehicle. The deputy found a half-empty bottle of vodka in her purse.

At Santa Barbara County Jail, the woman agreed to do a Breathalyzer test, which registered a BAC of .23 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent.

When the man sat up, the deputy noted that he wiped drool away from his mouth with his sleeve, and that a plastic baggie with suspected methamphetamine was in plain view on the tale. The man was known to the deputies from multiple previous arrests on drug charges, and the deputies each grabbed one of the man’s arms and arrested him.

A search of the man’s belongings revealed 1.9g of methamphetamine, a glass meth pipe and a digital scale that was missing its batteries. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Dec. 29 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a Sheriff’s deputy stopped at the Bluffs parking area on Bailard Avenue and saw a parked Jeep. As the Sheriff approached in his vehicle, a man driving the Jeep attempted to back out of the parking spot he was in, but the deputy yelled for him to

stop where he was. When the deputy approached the man’s vehicle, he reported that the man’s pupils were dilated and did not react to the deputy’s flashlight.

The deputy stated that the man’s speech was rapid and that he could not control his movements. Being a Drug Recognition Expert, the deputy had the man exit the vehicle to determine if he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Determining that he was under the influence of a controlled substance, the deputy arrested the 24-year-old man. When the deputy searched the man’s Jeep he found a glass meth pipe, a used syringe and pit bull puppy. The deputy called the man’s mother and she agreed to come get his vehicle and the dog.

Meth under foot

On Dec. 30 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a Sheriff’s deputy in a marked patrol vehicle saw two men sitting on the ground behind an apartment complex on Concha Loma Drive. One of the men had a broken methamphetamine pipe protruding from under his foot. When the deputy asked the man why he had a meth pipe under his foot, the man stated that it was not his pipe, as did his companion.

A second deputy arrived to assist and collected the broken pipe along with .01g of methamphetamine. Based on the man having the pipe and meth under his foot, the deputy arrested him for attempting to destroy evidence as well as for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. The other man was released at the seen, and the man with the pipe was transported to SB County Jail.

Doug Little and Bob Ingle propel Mary Saunders to the finish line of Carpinteria’s bed races in 1967. That year, the Carpinteria Youth Council and Carpinteria Jaycees cosponsored the town’s first bed races, in which teams of three sped down two blocks of Ash Avenue pushing mattresses on wheels. Jim Bailard, Jim Blakeslee and Helen Morrelli crossed the finish line in 36 seconds, claiming first place against 10 other teams. According to an Aug. 3 article on the event in The Carpinteria Herald, the last three teams to finish were the “victims of mishaps and mechanical failure.” One crashed into a TV cameraman, breaking its push bar and causing another fast-moving bed to careen off the course.
