Don’t let your eyes deceive you—a close look at this gray whale reveals that the image is made up of over 600 people crouched with their backs to the sky. The Art for the Sky event took place at Canalino School on April 6 and brought students and staff from both Canalino and Carpinteria Family schools out to the playing field to create an art piece that came together and drifted apart all within 15 minutes. Funded by Parents for Canalino and overseen by Oregon-based artist Daniel Dancer, the unique experience offered a lesson in perspective—sometimes it takes extra effort to see the big picture. In the case of the whale art, it took a view from a crane 80 feet in the air!

The City is considering an inn project at the Amtrak Station and is seeking public input.

City to hold railroad inn meeting

Development of a 30- to 40-room inn on Linden Avenue at the railroad tracks will be considered at a special City Council meeting on Monday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. The public is invited to offer comments on the concept.

A city-contracted study released in 2016 found that the market would likely support a small boutique hotel and restaurant located on the east end of the Amtrak station parking lot, a city-owned property. The design initially presented to the council by Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts in January 2016 is reminiscent of the historic railroad station that stood at the site until the mid-1960s.

Last fall, the city council hired a contractor to draft a Request for Proposals, the first step in the search for developers interested in working on the project. The city could enter into a contract with a developer and hotelier for a long-term lease on the property, or sell the property to a developer. In either arrangement, benefits to the city would include increased transient occupancy taxes and economic activity downtown.

Parking lost in the development of an inn—concept plans for which entail a 10,000 square foot building footprint— could be replaced on the south side of the tracks along Linden Avenue, where the city owns a 75-foot strip of land that

extends to Holly Avenue.

So far, public response to the inn has been mixed. The drought raised serious concerns about a project that would increase water consumption. Councilmembers and residents have also noted that the inn would compete with other local lodging to the city’s advantage.

Train traffic could be a nuisance, but the hoteliers interviewed in the 2016 study said the railroad proximity would not deter them. “You can mitigate a lot of the train noise and vibrations with good design,” Jim Rabe, a consultant with Keyser Marsten Associates, told the city council last fall.

Guravitz honored for Women’s March

Former Senator Barbara Boxer honored Carpinterian Lisa Guravitz at her annual Women Making History Reception held on April 5 in Beverly Hills. Guravitz and seven other women from throughout Southern California were lauded for their roles in the Women’s March. “(Guravitz’s) commitment to social action is boundless,” said Catherine J. Swysen, President of the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee. “This honor was well deserved!”

Guravitz, who has served on the board of SuBMITTed PHoTo the SB Women’s Political Committee for 15 Lisa Guravitz accepts her award years, arranged for 10 buses to take women for mobilizing 600 participants in from the Santa Barbara area to the Women’s the Women’s March last winter.

March in Los Angeles. About 600 women made the trek and many were young women whose fare was paid by the generosity of the others. Guravitz is particularly proud of this aspect—encouraging activism in younger women. Since the march, the SBWPC’s membership has doubled, new committees have formed and energetic young women are mobilizing.

About 500 people attended the Boxer reception, which featured special guest comedian Chelsea Handler. “I was just blown away,” Guravitz said of being honored.

Carpinteria Valley Lumber and Garden Center’s recent re-landscaping project has been turning heads, some of which belonged to members of Carpinteria Beautiful’s “Lookin’ Good Award” Committee. The local organization committed to keeping Carpinteria clean, green and beautiful, honored the lumber yard with this spring’s award for landscaping that not only looks good but also conserves water. “The award we won is for a water wise/drought tolerant design to display beauty without water waste,” said Marilyn Arnbrister of the Garden Center. “All the plants featured in our garden are from local nurseries and we couldn’t be more proud to have won the award.”

Food drive benefits 50 locals in need (so far)

The first delivery from a food drive coordinated by Indivisible Carpinteria and The Farm Cart was made last week—an effort that will feed 50 residents of local People’s Self-Help Housing complexes. For the last couple of weeks, Carpinterians have donated cash and food items toward the drive to ensure that those in need are well fed, particularly immigrants who are fearful to shop in public or register for food stamps given the federal government’s ramped up deportation efforts.

“Most of our families don’t have the privilege of eating organic fruit and produce, so you can only imagine the smiles on their faces when they opened the boxes and realized they could go home and make pico de gallo or salsa out of the cilantro, tomatoes, onion and avocados provided,” reported Jackie Meissner of People’s SelfHelp Housing. “The food boxes and other non-perishables were able to help five farmworker families, seven low-income families and four single moms with at least two children in each household.” donations are collected at The Farm Cart, 5103 Carpinteria Ave., which provides its produce for the drive at cost. Additionally, beans, rice, other healthy dried goods and non-perishables can be dropped off at the cart. Food vouchers are also being purchased from local shops for things like meats and dairy. Terry & Douglas Oehrli 5/05/1934 - 7/17/2002 (Douglas) 6/20/1937 - 10/16/2016 (Terry) Terry Anne Oehrli passed away quietly on Oct. 16, 2016 in Santa Barbara, Calif. In passing she joined her beloved husband Douglas, who left us on July 17, 2002. These are two people whose souls were so entwined that their passing is honored as one. Both grew up in Westchester, Calif. and were high school sweethearts. Douglas became a wood craftsman supported by the warm home life created by his beloved Terry. They moved from Southern California to Santa Barbara in 1969 and settled in Carpinteria in 1972. There they finished raising two sons, Michael of San Francisco, and Craig of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. As the boys moved on to form their own lives, the neighborhood became their family. There were many instances of backyard barbecues, the push to make holiday Christmas

Daniel “Danny” Rodriguez 9/5/1939 – 4/8/2017

On Saturday, April 8, 2017 Daniel “Danny” Rodriguez passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 77. Danny showed courage, strength and dignity during his final moments before he joined his wife Rose Marie.

Born in Oxnard on Sept. 5, 1939 and raised in Carpinteria, Danny attended Aliso School where he found his passion for sports. Later when he attended the original Carpinteria High School he played football and ran track, he was a true Warrior and as we all know, Warrior Spirit Never Dies!

After high school he met the love of his life, Rose Marie and they married on March 7, 1959 at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. They were married for 48 years before she passed away in 2007.

Together they raised their three sons in Carpinteria. As a young man Danny was a member of the National Arborist Association and was known for being a daring tree climber with no fear of heights. This led him into his first career at Griffin Tree & Landscape where he was a supervisor and eventually became part owner. Later Danny began a second career working for the Santa Barbara Unified School District as the grounds and maintenance foreman, which he retired from in 2001.

Being the hardworking man that he was, he couldn’t sit still in retirement and soon started a third career overseeing the landscape and maintenance operations at the

cookies, listening to USC football games on the radio, and Douglas with his home craft project team of Jesse Ybarra Sr. and Josef Blum. Terry was always there if a neighborhood child needed someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on. In her final years the neighborhood came to support her. Special thanks and honor go out to Dennis Lyons, Margaret and Jesse Ybarra, and Cindy Matsumura her caregiver, who provided comfort and a watchful eye in the absence of her beloved Douglas. Terry and Douglas are preceded in death by their parents Dominic and Beverly Summo, and Arthur and Jane Oehrli. They are survived by Terry’s sister, Linda Danforth, Douglas’ sister Sandy and brother-in-law Mark Arico, sons Michael and Craig, and daughterin-law Kimberly Gorman.

Danny was a true family man and showed love and compassion not only to his own family but also to everyone around him. He was a father figure to many in the community and was often called “Pops” because of his caring and giving ways. He had a passion for coaching and donating his time to the community. He was one of the founders of the CYAA, which gave his three sons and many other community kids fond memories of playing baseball. Danny was also known to many people of all ages in the community as “Coach.” His sons continued their passion in playing softball in the Santa Barbara Men’s Softball League with the team known as The Waterboys, where he became known as the honorary “Third Base Coach.” As a proud father and grandparent, Danny was the number one fan to all of his family. He made sure to always attend all of their sports and school events. No child in the Rodriguez family was ever left out and because of the inspiring grandfather and coach he was, they all led an active lifestyle making him a very proud grandpa. In addition to coaching and spending time with his family, Danny also loved playing golf, barbecuing and listening to music while cruising in his car.

He is survived by his three sons Daniel (Patty), Rudy (Regina) and Ruben (Charlene) Rodriguez; five grandchildren Daniel (Sandi), Angela, Alex (Torrey), Anthony and Yvonne Rodriguez; three great-grandchildren Daniel, Mia and Harleigh Rodriguez; his two brothersin-law Carlos and Jerry (Lorena) Estrada; sister-in-law Teri (Jim) Hill; two nephews Christopher and Nicholas Estrada; and niece Clarissa Estrada; as well many other nephews, nieces and family members.

The Rodriguez Family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and staff for all of their efforts over the years.

All funeral services will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Carpinteria.

A Rosary was held on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. and a funeral was held on Wednesday, April 12 at 10 a.m. with a Burial Service that followed at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Marion Jackson Smith 8/16/1921 – 4/5/2017

Marion Jackson Smith passed into God’s arms on April 5, 2017 surrounded by her family in Carlsbad, Calif. She was 95. She lived a life dedicated to God and her Christian faith, her family and her community. Marion was born to John Henry Jackson and Lillian Crandell Jackson in Cashmere, WA. She moved with her parents at a young age to an orange ranch in Duarte, Calif. She attended Duarte School, Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Monrovia. In 1942, she married William George Smith.

Together they had three children, William Jackson Smith (wife Barbara Capper Smith) of Monarch Beach, Calif., Laurie Anne Waid (husband Stephen Waid) of Escondido, Calif., and Dean Edward Smith (wife Crestienne Reynolds) of Bass Lake, Calif.

Bill and Marion lived in Arcadia for over 40 years, Bill as prinicipal of Holly Avenue School and Marion, a stay at home mom and an active member of the music community. After her youngest child began school, she returned to college and received her degree and teaching credentials from Cal State Los Angeles through much diligence and perseverance, managing her family and education simultaneously. She began teaching in the Temple City Unified School District in 1965 and taught first grade and specialized reading until she was 70. At the same time, she always was an active Sunday School teacher and member at the Temple City First Baptist Church. Also, she and Bill traveled extensively within the U.S. and internationally, always bringing their strong faith with them to share with others they met throughout the world.

Marion began playing the harp at age 12 and continued playing for others until she was over 90. She taught numerous people how to play. She was President of the

Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Harp Society and honored for her work with that organization.

Marion and Bill moved part time to Carpinteria, Calif. in 1988 where their youngest son, Dean, and his family resided. Together they supported the formation of a local church and became part of the Carpinteria community, eventually moving there full time. Until health required her to relocate to Carlsbad near her daughter in 2015, Marion was active in the Christian community including Reality Church Carpinteria, Bible Study Fellowship, retired teachers community and volunteered at numerous organizations including Santa Barbara Rescue Mission and the Braille Institute, teaching English as a second language and harp, and helping those through her church and community. Due to serious health issues two years ago, Marion moved to be closer to her daughter’s family and son in Southern California.

At Brookdale Carlsbad Assisted Living Residence she made friends and enjoyed the freedom of loving assistance from the staff there. Her tablemates at meals were her extended family, and she loved them all. She participated in day trips and fun activities until shortly before she died.

She was the driving power behind getting a Christian church service available at her facility each Sunday so they could all experience worship together without leaving the residence.

Marion is survived by her three children and their spouses, former daughter-in-law Sheri Owens Smith, grandchildren Scott Waid, Corinna Waid Reese, Todd Smith, Melinda McLain, Andrew Smith and Sterling Smith. She has 11 great-grandchildren ranging from 17 to 4 months. She loved each and every one of them and prayed for them daily, and will be greatly missed by all of her family. Marion’s family wishes to extend much thanks to Pastors Trevor and Dahl Scott of Preach the Word Ministries, the hospice team from Elizabeth Hospice, and the staff of Brookdale Carlsbad for their loving care and continued encouragement for Marion in her last weeks. Marion strongly supported these organizations throughout her life. Camino Trillado: residential lane, not speedway

What’s the hurry? Why do people speed on Camino Trillado? Over nine years of living on this amazing street I’ve witnessed an increasing number of cars speeding up and down Camino Trillado.

Of course, I am aware that it’s a connector street between El Carro and Ogan and ultimately to town or the 101, but every minute of every day it seems a car speeds on Camino Trillado. As a mother of a 2- and 4-year-old, I am very afraid for their safety.

Most of you who are speeding are my neighbors. Many of you speeding have children of your own on board, and even more of you are texting and speeding!

I do not speed down your street and endanger your children. I sincerely ask you to slow down when driving down Camino Trillado, and when doing so think of my children as yours when passing through our neighborhood.

America is back

With President Donald Trump taking charge, America is back as a super power.

No more passivity, bowing to the demands of Iran, allowing jihadists to get stronger, ignoring our allies (especially Israel), allowing open borders, giving more rights to refugees and illegals than Americans, and no more ignor-

ing the Constitution and the rule of law.

In a very dangerous world, America is back being the leader of the free world.

Hopefully, some resolutions with North Korea, China, Syria, Russia, Iran and ISIS will be coming in the future.

Celebrate prom and graduation safely

Near the end of high school, fancy dresses and stylish tuxedos come out for prom. Seniors also prepare for college, military and/or work. A lesson from my life must be learned. In 1992, I was a junior and an athlete at Tracy High School in San Joaquin County. I planned to attend a California college like Allan Hancock College. That never happened. I was 16 on April 10 of that year and hit head-on by a drunk driver. The collision gave me a coma for 100 days, brain injuries, several broken and dislocated bones, and paralysis. I was a patient in two hospitals for seven months and then had therapy for 17 months. After 25 years, I still struggle daily with my hearing, talking, walking and I cannot drive. Schooling for my dream job is unrealistic. A drunken driver dramatically changed my life. Please do not make a bad decision by driving drunk or become a passenger of a vehicle with one. As the old cliché says, “The life you save may be your own.”

Longtime educator and administrator Diana Rigby was chosen to be the next Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent, announced school board member Maureen Claffey at the end of the board’s April 11 meeting. Rigby, a former Carpinteria resident who forged a long career in Santa Barbara and Ventura County public schools, currently serves as the Superintendent of the Concord Public Schools and Concord-Carlisle Regional School District in Massachusetts.

“We were fortunate to have had several outstanding, highly qualified candidates for the position, and any one of them could have served capably. But at the end of the day, Mrs. Rigby’s lengthy superintendent experience, her leadership qualities and people strengths, and her track record of promoting academic excellence make her our top choice,” said Andy Sheaffer, CUSD School Board President.

Claffey noted the board’s difficulty in choosing a single person from the strong pool of potential superintendent candidates provided by the County of Santa Barbara search team. She said that board considered several talented, experienced and committed candidates with impressive backgrounds in education. “The board chose Mrs. Rigby as the strongest candidate from this exceptional pool of professionals because her abilities best match the district’s current needs,” said Claffey.

As a special education teacher turned administrator, Rigby has experience at nearly every level of school leadership.

The board, Sheaffer reported, is confident that Rigby will bring an impressive depth of knowledge and vision to all fiscal and educational district challenges.

“I am thrilled to be returning ‘home’ and to serve our schools and community,” said Rigby. Currently in her ninth year leading the Massachusetts district,

Rigby previously served as the Assistant Superintendent and Director of Special Education for the same district. She began her educational career as a special educator and administrator in Ventura County and Santa Barbara Unified School District, where she worked as the Director of Student Services and Assistant Superintendent. She also taught education courses at Westmont College.

Rigby attended Northwestern University and the University of Massachusetts, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She earned a Master’s Degree at U.C. Santa Barbara, and did additional coursework in school administration at California Lutheran University. Rigby will start on July 1 after a formal appointment is made and an employment contract approved at the board’s next regular meeting on April 25.

By esmé Lou Lopez LANdeCk, 10 yeARs oLd Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (BUNS) is a loving nonprofit organization that is filled with so many caring volunteers. When you walk into BUNS the first thing you see is hardworking people who want to make a better life for bunnies and guinea pigs.

The second thing you’ll see are the cutest bunnies and guinea pigs in the world!

One of the people that I interviewed was Phil. One of the many dedicated volunteers at BUNS, Phil has been giving his time for over 30 years. He is such a big help to the organization. He built all of the exercise pens, fosters lots of the bunnies, and works three shifts. I also interviewed Kimmy, who isn’t only the president of BUNS, she works three shifts, too.

Together Phil and Kimmy pretty much run the place.

When I was interviewing Kimmy and Phil, I asked them, “Why bunnies and guinea pigs?” They told me that the founder saw that bunnies and guinea pigs weren’t getting the love and care that so many other animals were getting. She knew that fewer people were interested in bunnies and guinea pigs than dogs and cats, and she was driven to do something about it.

When you think of volunteering at BUNS, you might think of playing with bunnies and guinea pigs all day long. Well, that is part of it. When I get to BUNS for my volunteering shift, the first thing I do

is fill all of their water containers. The next thing I do is give them pellets. When there are visitors, I give them a tour. Then it is time to put hay in all of the litter boxes in the hutches. There is a code on each hay box and I match that code to the right pen. If there are any dirty bowls in the sink I wash them. Then it is finally time to play with the bunnies and guinea pigs and give them special treats! This just might be my favorite part of my shift at BUNS. BUNS doesn’t only have adorable, loving bunnies and guinea pigs for great prices. BUNS also has classes for your bunny or guinea pig. BUNS’ most popular event is Hoppy Hour. Hoppy Hour is an event that helps socialize bunnies. BUNS also has a class on basic bunny and guinea pig training for only $5 per registrant. If you work at BUNS, you get the class for free. It also includes refreshments. BUNS also provides free pamphlets about how to raise your bunny or guinea pig.

In addition to many locals, people came from Norway, China, Hungary, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom (Scotland), Germany, Taiwan, Ohio, Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Maryland, Illinois, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Vermont.

The seals were frightened twice by pier activity and by a helicopter, a group of loud bluff-top viewers and a paraglider.

Natural History Notes

Although the sanctuary was created to protect the harbor seals, it also provides a sanctuary for many other species—in particular, many birds. This week, for example, saw over 70 pelicans resting on shore one day.

City preps for moratorium on commercial pot

With nine months left before the state of California begins licensing marijuana operations, the City of Carpinteria moved toward a moratorium on recreational and medical marijuana commerce. The City Council voted unanimously on April 10 for staff to draft a two-year maximum ban and form an ad hoc council committee to study the issues triggered by the state’s legalization of marijuana, developing well-informed permanent regulations.

Proposition 64, the ballot initiative passed by California voters last November, legalized personal marijuana use immediately, but commercial cultivation, distribution and sales remains illegal until the state develops its licensing and taxation structure, which is expected to be in place Jan. 1, 2018.

The council has the authority to prohibit or regulate commercial marijuana activities in the city. Residents have complained of odor nuisances and security risks related to marijuana growing in Carpinteria Valley.

Just a handful of properties zoned for agriculture exist within the city. Most ag parcels lie just outside city lines in the unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County, where several marijuana-growing operations are known to exist. The county recently began its own process toward a moratorium and the creation of a registry for growers. Existing operations that can prove they were growing medicinal marijuana before Jan. 19, 2016 are considered legal nonconforming.

City lawyer Dylan Johnson reported that the county has documented nine potential cases of zoning code violations related to growing marijuana in Carpinteria Valley. Four have been closed, and five remain open as the county tries to determine which operations are legal.

Though few agricultural properties exist within city limits, industrial buildings could be attractive for indoor marijuana growing and processing. Local lawyer Bryce Killen encouraged the council to keep an open mind toward the emerging industry. marijuana operations in Carpinteria, Killen said.

The federal government, meanwhile, still considers all marijuana activities illegal and criminal, and under federal law marijuana remains a Schedule 1 substance, on par with heroin and LSD. The Obama administration took a hands-off approach, but Johnson noted, “There’s been some question about what position the current administration will take; there have been a lot of varying statements made.”

Fire sprinkler code shot down by council

The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District found itself in the unusual position of having code recently approved by the fire board rejected by the Carpinteria City Council this week.

Councilman Brad Stein took issue with a new requirement for homeowners to install sprinkler systems when remodeling 50 percent or more of their square footage.

The council voted unanimously for the fire district to remove that specific language from the fire code update, which needs city approval for implementation.

“If we don’t take an opportunity to install sprinkler systems when construction is being done to these homes, then we are missing an opportunity to save some lives,” Fire Marshal Ed Foster said in a presentation to the council. Foster noted that in 2015, there were 388,000 home fires in the U.S. that resulted in 2,560 deaths.

The fire board adopts new code every three years based on state updates, and can modify the state language as it sees fit.

The sprinkler system requirement was a local addition, not mandated by the state.

Stein, a contractor, objected based on the expense of installing a home sprinkler system. Councilman Gregg Carty echoed Stein’s argument and added that smoke detectors are highly effective in saving lives during house fires.

New vacation rental chapter set to begin

Carpinteria’s new vacation rental regulations will go into effect in July, at which point residents will vie for a limited number of licenses to operate rentals in the beach neighborhood. Homeowners who had legally rented their units before the city implemented a moratorium in 2015 can apply for licenses between May 1 and June 1. Prospective license holders have through June 30 to apply for an early July lottery for the spaces that remain after existing rentals are relicensed.

In December 2016, the California Coastal Commission approved the city council-approved ordinance, a final step to change local zone code.

Any rentals that were permitted outside the beach neighborhood for two years prior to the moratorium will be granted a five-year amortization period.

Like all license holders, they will have to renew annually.

Insurance to cover portion of city hall remodel

Creating its own silver lining, the city will use insurance-covered asbestos remediation to launch a remodel of city hall’s interior. A preliminary construction estimate for the Carpinteria Avenue building comes to $1.3 million—$600,000 would be remediation work covered by insurance, while $700,000 would remodel the aging building’s interior.

Last fall, the cleanup from a sewer backup in city hall uncovered asbestos vinyl floor tiles that required immediate removal and led to the discovery of the flooring throughout the building. The building will have to be vacated for the asbestos abatement, so plans to remodel the interior sometime in the future will be moved up.

The city council took the first step on Monday night by approving a $152,000 contract with AB Design Studio for architectural and interior design services.

A $72,000 portion of that cost is related to remediation work and will be covered by insurance.

City wades into Styrofoam sales ban

At the urging of several conservation organizations, the City of Carpinteria started the process toward a ban on the retail sale of polystyrene (Styrofoam) products this week. Nineteen other municipalities in the state have restricted the sale of Styrofoam products, such as coolers and prepackaged plates and cups.

“We’re such a disposable society and we need to change that mindset,” Councilman Brad Stein said.

City code adopted in 2008 requires restaurants to use recyclable materials in their to-go packaging. That move eliminated the use of Styrofoam containers and has significantly reduced the volume of

“Beauty and the Beast” is a strange story when you think about it. It selfadvertises as a tale as old as time. But what part of it is “as old as time?”

People falling in love with animals? Or does its narrative pedigree have more to do with the fact that a good-looking person ends up with a not-so-goodlooking person? But, wait, the prince turns out to be really handsome! It must be that the tale as old as time—the song as old as rhyme—is the bit about how people can change. With enough prodding, we can become better.

At any rate, in case you lacked a childhood, here’s how the story goes.

Once upon a time, there was a handsome French prince who was a real jerk (totally unrealistic, I know). While his people suffered, he partied in his mansion—in fact, he partied in his mansion on their dime! They were starving, he was living large and not caring.

Then one night an ugly old beggar comes to the prince’s and asks for help.

With disdain on his face and hate in his heart, the prince rejects the beggar.

But it turns out she is a super powerful enchantress. So she says, “All right fine, I’ll show this guy,” and turns him into an ugly beast. She adds that he will stay that way forever unless he gets someone to fall in love with him in the near-ish future.

Meanwhile, on the more modest side of the France, Belle (Emma Watson) is walking around, singing, reading and having a gay old time. Aside from people making fun of her kooky dad (Kevin Kline) and some unwanted advances from that burly dolt, Gaston (Luke Evans), all is well with Belle.

But then her dad goes missing.

Belle searches after him and finds out that the beast—or just “Beast” (Dan Stevens) for short—has captured him.

She pleads with Beast to let her take her dad’s place as prisoner. Beast seems to think that trading an old, scraggly dude for a pretty girl is an all right deal, so he goes with it.

The upside for Belle is that the furniture in Beast’s mansion is pretty nice.

The candlestick, Lumiere (Ewan McGregor), the clock, Cogsworth (Ian McKellan), the tea pot, Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson), and the cutest tea cup this side of the Seine, Chip (Nathan Mack), welcomes Belle with open arms. They seem like genuinely nice people.

But they also have an ulterior motive: They want Belle to fall in love with Beast and thereby lift the enchantment

(which applies to them, too, for some reason … the enchantress making the staff suffer does seem kind of ironic, now that I think about it).

But who could love a beast? Well, Belle. She starts to warm up just as the rest of the town cools to the idea of a monstrous beast in their backyard. So, once his prisoner, Belle finds herself Beast’s prime defender. She ends up being his only means of salvation.

Again, this story is strange. And yet, it’s not like it’s hard to get into “Beauty and the Beast.” In fact, somehow it seems like the really weird—really perverted—reaction would be to not root for the Belle-Beast connection, even though he is, yes, ugly, but also mean, prone to bouts of violence and rage, condescending, demanding, possessive and indeed, he is some species of animal.

Regardless, I applaud this movie’s effort. I like the original Disney “Beauty and the Beast” (though for a really good version, see the 1946 “La Belle et la Bete”). And this movie sticks very closely to the Disney version (including the music, story, script, etc.). So although this movie doesn’t get too many points for originality, it does score high in reflected glory.

Is that enough? I don’t know. I wouldn’t say this version of “Beauty and the Beast” is an improvement on the Disney version. Still, it’s hard not to like Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellan and Emma Thompson.

And this is also a very pretty movie, which is a plus.

So this “Beauty and the Beast” is kind of like another copy of your favorite novel, perhaps with different cover art and a new introduction. It’s not something you need, or covet, or even something you would’ve asked for. But, hey, why not?

“Beauty and the Beast” is rated PG for some action violence, peril and frightening images.

Debbie murphy Greg Novak and his wife KC Collins live in Carpinteria. Novak is a Project Manager for Freudenberg, formerly know as Helix Medical, and has worked there for eight years. Two years ago he created a company called Carp Coffee. He roasts his coffee and sells it at the Carpinteria Farmers Market in the craft area. He hopes to expand this business and perhaps even offer tastings. Additionally, he is the volleyball coach at Cate School.

Tell me about the Franklin Trail?

When it opened I thought it was the perfect thing for Carpinteria. It just adds that one more thing as a destination.

People don’t even have to get in their car to go to the trail. I used to go up the wash before there was a trail. I didn’t know if I was trespassing or not, yet I was just adventuring out and going where I could. Then, when the trail opened, I was there the next day on the hike. When the second phase opened, I would go every weekend and now I sometimes even go during the week.

I do this on my own, mostly by myself.

It’s my cardio workout. I power walk and go up there with my dog Hapa, a Chiweenie—a chihuahua-dashshund mix. I put him in my backpack with his head sticking up out of the top of the pack, all 15 pounds of him, and we walk up the trail. Then, together we walk down the trail. He used to like to walk the trail, yet now he is older. I don’t want to hurt him, so I carry him. Now, at home when he sees the backpack, he is ready to go and really loves the trail. His head sticks out of the pack and he just watches the trail go by. People, of course, think he is so cute and mostly talk to him and ignore me.

How far have you gone on the trail?

I’ve been to the end of the second phase often. I have walked onto the third phase by myself, but I was getting tired and realized that it wasn’t smart to be so far up the trail by myself when I was tired.

So I turned around and came back down.

Last year, I did once go all the way to the top with my friend. It was amazing. We work together at Freudenberg and are looking forward to going back up there again now that it is spring.

Have you been afraid up there on the trail?

No, I haven’t. When it first opened, I was seeing a lot of bear tracks up higher, so I would take bells with me since I would go alone and early in the morning. It is usually just getting light when I go up the trail. Now, of course, I see others coming down at that time. I was a little concerned at the beginning because I knew that the bears have their territory, yet now with people even going up there on full moon hikes, I’m sure that the bears have moved farther away from the trail.

Have you had any interesting sightings?

This past weekend was actually the first time I had seen any type of wildlife other

than a rabbit. I saw a bobcat. It was just past the fence on the first downhill of the second phase, right past the sycamore tree.

I saw something trotting. I thought it was a dog at first. It turned back, saw me then slowly galloped away, stopped again and turned back to look at me, so I stopped.

We somewhat traveled together for maybe two miles on the trail, keeping the same distance. He stayed in front of me the entire time and I could tell where he was as birds were dive-bombing him as he traveled up the trail. He had a white bobtail and grey calico body. Since I have never seen a snake or coyote or anything, it was a real treat to see the bobcat. When I’m on the backside after the second bench is usually where I start looking for deer and what-not, yet this was the first real sighting.

What does the trail do for you?

Being out in nature, I never get bored.

With each step, I am just watching the trail. It is relatively quiet on the front side, then once you get over the top, within 20 yards, all the noise goes away. It is completely silent. I like to be alone in that silence and I can be there within an hour from my house. My wife asks, “Don’t you ever get bored?” Yet, I don’t get bored because every hike is different. I see different people. I think I’m “charging it,” going early, but then I see all shapes and sizes of people coming down as I’m going up the mountain early in the morning. I think it is really great for all the kids on the trail who hike and bike. It’s good for any age. When I went up with my friend, and he is really fit, I was keeping up with him at his pace and we had gotten close to the beginning of the third phase. We felt pretty good. Then all of a sudden there were these two girls, probably 12 years old, in little tank tops just walking down the trail already on their way back, holding their little water bottles by the caps.

They were just walking down the trail talking. It was a bit of a surprise.

What else has the trail done for you?

It’s just that extra thing in Carpinteria that I can do anytime. It’s always open, it’s always free, it’s my cardio and it clears the thoughts in my head.

How often do you hike?

I hike the Franklin Trail at least once a week and sometimes twice. With my regular job, Carp Coffee and coaching, it’s kind of hard to get up there. I surf too and if there’s surf, I do that first cause the mountain is always there and the waves come and go. The hike is a bit of a substitute for the volleyball I played at East Beach for 25 years. What do you take on the trail?

I used to bring extra water for the dog and after 10 times of him not wanting anything, I stopped carrying that water.

If I know I am going to the second bench, I bring a little container of hot Carp Coffee, a trail bar of some sort and spend about a half hour up there to relax and let the dog run around. I always want to be prepared, so I bring a jacket because I never know. And I always make sure my phone is charged completely. Though I don’t check messages or do anything on the phone or even listen to music. I just have it in case of an emergency.

Anything else you would like to say?

With the Carp Coffee, I have made a Franklin Trail Blend that I sell at the Carpinteria Farmers Market in the craft section. I have taken all that money and will donate it all to the trail when I reach $500. The trail gives me so much, so I am happy to give back to the trail.

Trail advisory: As the weather warms, there have been a few more sightings of snakes on the trail. They are mostly all harmless, but you want to be able to hear the warning of a rattlesnake if you happen to cross its path. Leave your headsets at home and listen to nature.

Rattlesnakes have no interest in you, and that’s why they give clear warnings. Be able to hear them.

SCHOOL NOTES Westerlay Orchids donates $14k to Canalino

For Westerlay Orchids, the 9th Annual Carpinteria Greenhouse and Nursery Tour was as much about cultivating young minds as showing off the plants grown in its state-of-the-art greenhouse.

The $14,276 collected in retail sales at Westerlay between March 27 and April 1 will be directed through Carpinteria Education Foundation into Canalino School classrooms. Westerlay President Toine Overgaag said supporting public education and youth organizations in the community are long held values of the family business.

“The Annual Carpinteria Greenhouse and Nursery Tour is about showcasing farm operations that are so important in the community. We wanted to take that message a step further by supporting our schools in a way that benefits those who are most fundamental to the community––teachers and students,” Overgaag said.

Toine’s wife, Kandie, worked for the school district as a student counselor and has continued to be personally invested in the cause of supporting local youth.

At Canalino, the donation will fund art programs through the Children’s Creative Project.

“The students at Canalino will greatly benefit from Westerly Orchids’ donation through enrichment programs for the arts,” said Canalino Principal Jamie Persoon. “Programs such as these have long fallen from public education budgets making benefactors like Westerlay vital to bringing visual, theater and musical arts to our students to give them a wellrounded education.”

School district announces staff cook-off

Carpinteria High School’s televisionworthy culinary arts kitchen will be the setting for a television-style cookoff on Thursday, April 20 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 4810 Foothill Road. Teams made up of Carpinteria Unified School District staff will compete to create the most mouthwatering dishes that utilize three specific ingredients. A trio of foodie judges will rate the dishes and decide which of the six teams wins gift certificates to local restaurants and, more importantly, bragging rights. Students and parents beautify Aliso School

On April 8 a small group of Aliso School student and parent volunteers, coordinated by Garden Educator Genevieve Schwanbeck, met on the Lions’ campus for a morning of landscape sprucing. With generous donations of salvias, ceanothus, protea, a rock rose and geraniums from Clayton Gardens, Green Earth Nursery, Abe Nursery and Toro Canyon Nursery, the volunteers brought color and greenery to the front of the school and around the school sign facing Carpinteria Avenue.

Some of the volunteers were disappointed to see that weed killer had been sprayed around the base of the school sign. “The (volunteers) out here this morning could have weeded this whole bed in 20 minutes,” said Natasha Elliott, a parent volunteer and landscape designer with a Green Gardener certification from the city of Santa

Where there’s a will, there’s a whale

Photos by Robin KaRlsson Canalino and Carpinteria Family School students learned the importance of being a small piece of a larger whole on April 6, when artist Daniel Dancer brought an Art for the Sky project to their campus. Over 600 students filled in the outline of a gray whale, creating a beautifully cohesive image when captured from 80 feet above. The day before the ephemeral art piece came about, Dancer worked with students to map out the massive whale. He used dyed mulch and kitty litter for the outline and over 100 pairs of denim jeans to represent water around the animal. Students were instructed to wear T-shirts in specific colors to match the shades of a gray whale. Following the photo shoot, Dancer made a video that was screened for students on April 7.

Dancer, an Oregon-based artist who has worked with dozens of schools and community groups on similar projects around the country, was hired by Parents for Canalino to create the kid-colored artwork, and to convey the lessons that went along with it. Dancer presented his six teachings to students: gratitude, collaboration, interconnection, intentions, impermanence and “sky sight.” PFC CoPresident Toni Thompson said, “During the opening assembly (Dancer) explained how important it is to see the big picture in life. If we only view things from our individual perspective we can’t possibly understand how others are feeling and how our actions affect everything and everyone around us. It was truly hard to imagine how this Art for the Sky thing would work on our campus, but as you can see by the photos it really did happen and it was even more amazing than we could have imagined!”

Easter payback CVN

TURN UP THE HEAT NIKKI DAILEY Growing up an only child I got into a fair bit of mischief. It was all generally innocent, but my high level of curiosity often annoyed my family a great deal.

I tended to second guess everything I was told, especially on the eve of a large holiday when I had to skip baked goods.

Here’s the thing, if you tell a 5-year-old that she must give up cookies to Santa on Christmas Eve, carrot cake for the Easter Bunny and then a candy bar for the tooth fairy she will eventually grow suspicious.

Many of my friends were told by their parents to leave a raw carrot out, because carrots were the Easter Bunny’s favorite snack, but not my mom! Many of my friends were also instructed to leave only their freshly pulled tooth beneath their pillow so that the tooth fairy would leave them a quarter. My mom told me to include a candy bar beside my tooth because that sweetens the dollar amount the tooth fairy could be bribed to leave behind. I believed Mom only because I woke up to find a $5 bill the next morning, as well as an empty candy bar wrapper. The economic response each holiday showed that the more I left for said holiday figure, the larger the present, basket or dollar amount I would receive in return.

Because of this, each year I left a larger piece of carrot cake for the Easter bunny, until I eventually left him an entire carrot cake with a glass of carrot juice on the side to further sweeten the deal. To wake up and see that I was only left a single Easter basket left me feeling downright gipped!

This occurred when I was the mature age of 10, and I thought it best to discuss this with my mother Easter morning. She encouraged me to write a detailed letter of complaint to the Easter Bunny so that he

could see where I was coming from and why his cake portions would be cut down the following year. I sat down that very morning and in my best hand-writing wrote the Easter Bunny my objections, signed sealed and then delivered to my mom, who told me she would make sure he received it. Years later I came to see who had really been snacking on all the desserts I had thoughtfully left out!

Though therapy was considered to help me get over such parental hypocrisy, I decided instead to be the bigger person and get past it on my own.

This year I’m in charge of the Easter feast and have decided to cook up some delicious braised rabbit for dinner. I’ll bake up some carrot cake for Mom also, but will probably cut her a thin slice this time around as payback. Happy Easter and springtime everyone!

Braised rabbit with spring vegetables Cook Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Serving: 4

Ingredients

1/2 cup Dijon mustard 2 Tablespoons yellow mustard seeds One 3-pound rabbit—cut into 2 whole legs, 2 front quarters and 1 whole loin all on the bone Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 Tablespoons canola oil 1 medium onion, cut into 1/2-inch dice 1 fennel bulb, cut into 1/2-inch dice 2 thyme sprigs 1 rosemary sprig 4 sage leaves 1/4 cup dry white wine 2 cups rabbit or chicken stock or lowsodium broth

Process

In a bowl, blend the Dijon mustard and mustard seeds. Season the rabbit parts with salt and pepper. Spread the mustard all over the rabbit pieces. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil. Add the rabbit pieces and cook over moderate heat until richly browned, about 2 minutes per side. Turn the pieces carefully to keep as much mustard crust on the rabbit as possible. Transfer the rabbit to a plate.

Add the onion, fennel, thyme, rosemary and sage to the skillet. Cover and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally,

until the vegetables are softened, about 10 minutes. Add the wine and cook, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the stock and bring to a boil. Place the rabbit pieces in the vegetables.

Cover the skillet and braise the rabbit in the upper third of the oven for about 50 minutes, until is tender. Uncover and braise for 10 minutes longer, until the rabbit pieces are glazed.

Transfer the rabbit to a plate. Discard the herbs. Boil the sauce over high heat until the liquid is reduced by two-thirds, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and return the rabbit pieces to the sauce to heat through.

The Book merges art and literature

In honor of the nonprofit’s 50th anniversary, Friends of the Library is hosting an art show that celebrates reading through fine art. Carole Clarke took first place in the juried show entitled The Book with her watercolor painting “Boy and a Book.”

Warriors bring down Rams volleyball 3-1

Crosstown rivals Carpinteria High and Cate schools duked it out on the Warrior volleyball court on April 4. After splitting the first two games, the Warriors claimed the final two games for a 3-1 Tri-Valley League victory. The win earns Carpinteria a sweep on the season against Cate, after beating the Rams 3-2 in a March 2 match on the mesa. Carpinteria improved its overall record to 8-2 and 6-2 in league, while Cate fell to 2-5 and 2-4 in league.

The first game went back and forth with the visitors taking a 9-5 lead thanks to the strong serving of freshman Theo Mack, who finished the day with 12 kills, the Ram high. The Warriors responded with a run of their own to tie the game at

12. Cate then recaptured the lead at 18-14, but a Ben Medel block at the net ignited the Warriors to retake a 20-19 lead. They closed out the set, securing game one by a score of 25-19.

The Rams jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second game, only to see Carpinteria claw its way back ahead 15-14. “The Warriors never gave up and continued fighting in a tug-of-war match,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. But Cate prevailed in game two, 25-22, with some strong play at the net by Carson Williams to tie the match at one game apiece.

The Rams built a big lead once again in game three at 14-5. A huge block at the net by Jonathan Flores brought the Warriors within one, to 17-16. A spike down the middle of the floor, once again by Flores, would put the Warriors up 23-18

and Carpinteria held on for a 25-21 win to take a two game to one lead. “I think in all three games that we lost, we gave up five-point runs right when we hit 19,” said Cate coach Greg Novak.

The fourth game was evenly played, until the Rams were able to find some separation, taking an 11-7 lead. But the score would quickly turn around after Warrior team captain Armando Soriano knocked down a kill to tie the game at 17. Soriano would later hammer another spike to put his team up 20-18.

Freshman setter Travis Mead served out the match, besting the Rams by a score of 25-21.

Mead ended up with 28 assists for the night. Ortega came away with 11 digs and 13 kills, and Soriano collected 12 kills, two blocks and seven digs.

“Left-handed opposite hitter Jack Gay performed well and ended with six digs, eight kills,” added Garcia. With the win, the Warriors remain in third place behind rival Bishop Diego and Foothill Tech. Cate maintained its fourth-place position.

“We were able to stay composed through the match and regain our energy,” explained Garcia. “Carson Williams had a great night. He had five blocks, and he touched a ton of blocks,” said Novak.

“When you lose 21, 22 to 25, and you play well, you can walk away and say it’s a good match.”

Both schools are back in action on Thursday, April 13 with the Rams hosting Foothill Tech at 4:30 p.m., and the Warriors facing Providence at 6 p.m. on the road.

The Carpinteria Aquatics Club swim team participated in the Pleasant Valley Swim Meet at Adolfo Camarillo High School last weekend, coming away with some personal bests and introducing some new members who gained experience. Coaches Armando Ramos and Jimmy McCarthy led the squad with swimmer Micah Faoro competing in his first-ever swim meet and placing second in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:24.11. Dillan Kai Yoshi Scott dropped 11.38 seconds on the 50-meter backstroke, while Allison Banks trimmed 26.62 seconds on her 100-meter freestyle time, and Julia Piccoletti trimmed 5.22 seconds on her 100 free as well. Asher Smith came in after participating in the Winter Championships, and knocked off 5.31 seconds in the 100 free with a time of 1:14.04. Taylor Classen who competed in five events for the day shaved some time in almost all her events, and registered a 1:09.66 time for her 100 free. Ian Thomas swam in four events on the day.

April 6 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team beat Bishop Diego 23-2 in a Frontier League home game. The Cardinals led the Warriors in the first, scoring two runs. Carpinteria responded by scoring ten, five, four and four runs in the first four innings to secure the game, which was called after five innings. Amanda Blair pitched four innings to get the victory, and Mackenzie Kephart pitched a perfect fifth inning.

April 11 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team came out on top in a 10-4 Frontier League game against Villanova. Amanda Blair pitched three innings, and Mackenzie Kephart went to the mound in the fourth to pitch four innings and secure the win. Kayana Diaz had three hits, and Mikayla Blair clubbed four. A solo home run from Amanda Blair contributed to the Warriors offensively. “We came out offensively focused and pounded out 17 hits and scored 10 runs, which was excellent.

However, defensively we weren’t as focused and committed five errors, which allowed their four runs,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The Warriors are 12-5 overall and 3-1 in league.

April 5 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team notched its first Tri-Valley League win of the 2017 season as they scored early and held on to defeat the Fillmore Flashes, 7-2. Warrior senior hurler Sal Delgado threw five innings, surrendering two earned runs, striking out nine with no walks, and giving up eight hits to get the win. Senior infielder/pitchers David Martinez and Tony Vega each tossed scoreless innings of relief. Junior catcher Toby Spach went two-for-two at the plate with a double, two walks and four RBi. Sophomore first baseman Chase Mayer also collected a pair of hits, going two-for-three with a double, two runs scored and two RBi. “it was great to score some early runs. The maturity of this core group is evident in many areas, and today it showed up at the plate and on the mound,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney.

April 5 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team hosted the Triangular Meet, finishing second with 49 points by both the boys and the girls in the competition against Foothill Tech and Santa Ynez. Warriors sprinter Vinnie Gonzalez won the 100 meters, while Terrell Richardson took the 300 meters and Daniel Burquez captured the triple jump. Aly Springer won the 100 in her first time racing that distance. Mikela Keefer won the 1600 meters, and Chloe Singer won the high jump. “none of the schools were at full strength; it was more of a development meet,” said Carpinteria coach Van Latham. “Many athletes were being rested for the upcoming invitationals.”

Senior Joel Revo got the start on the mound for Cate and threw five innings, striking out three. April 11 – The Cate School boys tennis team (10-0) continued its undefeated season with a 15-3 win at Tri-Valley League rival Villanova. Rams senior co-captain Kevin Ha took down sophomore Charlie Quest, 7-5, to give Cate a 6-0 lead. In the second round, Quest defeated Cate’s number-three singles junior Joseph Thomassen, 7-5, for the only singles’ win for the Wildcats. In the third round, Cate’s number-two singles freshman Ethan Ha defeated Quest, 6-1, to complete his sweep for the day. In doubles, junior Nicholas Hildebrandt teamed with sophomore Charlie Xie for the first time winning all three of their sets. Cate’s Number-two doubles team, junior Charlie Morris and sophomore Brad Gordon, swept all three sets; while, senior cocaptain Mason Mackall replaced Kevin Ha in the second round, notching two 6-0 wins in his first singles appearance this season.

Volleyball

April 11 – The Cate School boys volleyball team won the first game on the road Tuesday night against Nordhoff, but later fell short and dropped the match to the Rangers, 3-1. Freshman Theo Mack hit a .278, which included 14 kills off 36 swings. Senior Henry Dawson had six kills that tallied a .235 and added an extra point with a solo block. Sophomore Jojo Broussard stepped in to claim a kill and one solo block. “The powerful first set had the Rams playing in-system and with confidence, making the game look very easy; however, something clicked with Nordhoff’s offense and the Rams were unable to block the powerful attack,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. The Rams will be at home on April 13 with a second round league match against Foothill.

The Mavericks celebrated their fifth annual Dribble Drive with over 50 players and parents dribbling, honking and jogging their way down Linden Avenue from the mountains to the beach and back last Friday night to raise money for the local basketball program that is celebrating its 10th year in Carpinteria. Mavericks director Ryan Reed says, “This fundraiser allows Mavericks to offer scholarships to kids and lower the cost of uniforms and tournament fees so more kids can participate.”

After dribbling to the beach, the teams returned to the high school for a two-hour marathon of free-throw shooting.

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER The second Saturday in April always means working the annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day that we—the City of Carpinteria—put on for residents to dispose of those random things people accumulate and then are not sure what to do with each year. This year was one of the busiest yet, with loaded cars lined up down the street to safely dispose of their hazardous waste right up to the end.

Started in the early 1990s by volunteers from Carpinteria Beautiful in partnership with E.J. Harrison and Sons and other local volunteer groups to provide a safe place for items that shouldn’t, or couldn’t, be disposed of in residential waste, this event has kept many tons of hazardous materials and regular waste out of landfills. The City now operates the event, and each year Public Works employees, E.J. Harrison and Sons, the Noon Rotary Club and other volunteers help remove unwanted household goods while Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. handles the hazardous waste disposal.

Every person who comes in on Saturday and helps direct people to the correct location and unload their materials contributes to the event’s efficiency. Several thousand pounds of hazardous waste and multiple tons of household goods were processed this year.

Providing disposal options for residents helps keep hazardous materials out of landfills and the local environment. While an event on the scale of last Saturday takes place once a year, the City operates a drop off for antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint (ABOP) year round on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Residents can bring ABOP

items (up to 5 gallon liquid quantity), along with mercury-based thermostats, compact fluorescent lights, and up to three small household electronic items between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to City Hall during ABOP. It is also extremely important to use caution when getting rid of medication.

For proper medication disposal, residents should use the Operation Medicine Cabinet secure drop-box located in front of the Sheriff’s Department entrance at 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Medication should never be flushed down the toilet or thrown in the trash. When getting rid of medications, the best thing to do is combine all medications in a plastic bag to be dropped off in the secure drop box. This allows the pill bottles to be recycled in the regular recycling instead of incinerated. And if you need to get rid of sharps items, your waste hauler offers free postage-paid sharps mail-back boxes upon request, or they can be brought to the county clinic at 931 Walnut Ave. Last Saturday’s event and the other year-round disposal alternatives help us lower the amount of waste that gets landfilled each year, and ensures proper and safe handling of potentially toxic materials. I always try to remember to thank each person who comes out and helps us make our safe disposal events such a success. Without the many staff and volunteers that give up their Saturday to help out, we wouldn’t be able to run such a great event. While there is often a wait, almost everyone I spoke with Saturday was patient and happy to get rid of their items free of charge—even if there was a bit of a wait.

A tete-a-tete with Easter Bunny

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY I’m excited to share with you all an exclusive interview with ever elusive and extremely busy Easter Bunny.

LO: Is Easter Bunny your real name?

EB: Oh, no. Bunny is an endearment of my family name, which is Rabbit. Easter is the honorable title appointed to me years ago.

LO: How did you get appointed Easter Bunny?

EB: Family tradition. The honor was bequeathed to my family when the Hares began to lose favor. They were the ones who started the tradition of hiding eggs for children to find.

LO: Hares? There used to be Easter Hares?

EB: Yes, going back to the 16th century in Germany. According to Hare Family Lore, the spring goddess saved the life of a bird frozen in winter by turning it into an enchanted White Hare. Since he had been a bird, the White Hare was able to lay eggs, and to celebrate his new life he began hiding the eggs for little children to find for good luck.

LO: How did the Hares lose favor?

EB: Their nature was the problem. Hares are quite flighty. Too many lamps and fragile ornaments were being broken in the homes when the eggs were being hidden. You humans have a word for them that I don’t really like to use…

LO: You mean hare-brained?

Just Married?

EB: Yes, but they can’t help it, really. It’s inbred. The grumblings about doors being left open and broken furnishings became too numerous, and the final straw came in the late 1800s when we noticed a growing surge for the appointment of an Easter stork. Imagine! Goodness, we simply could not tolerate that. We Rabbits had a meeting with the spring goddess and she agreed to forward our clan and allow the Hares to be our helpers, as we had been theirs.

LO: How is it that you’re able to hide all those eggs on Easter Eve? EB: All Easter Rabbits become enchanted when appointed, as the Hares did, but in different ways. We grow larger and wear human clothing to appear more attractive, and we live longer. Easter Rabbits, though, can’t lay eggs like the Easter

Hares could, so we had to partner with the chicks for theirs. What is an asset is our inherent talent for multiplication, so there are legions of us to help every Easter Rabbit.

LO: Is Easter Bunny always a female like you?

EB: Oh, no. We alternate gender with every appointment. Before me was my father, and after me will be one of my sons.

LO: You know, when I was 6 or 7 my brother told me he saw the Easter Bunny in our living room, and he was so tall he had to bend his head down so he didn’t bump it on the ceiling. I have to confess that I didn’t like that such a large creature was in our house.

EB: Hmmm, that would have been my great-grandfather. He was nearing the end of his appointment and was becoming forgetful about when he was…

LO: When he was?

EB: Yes, losing track of time. We Rabbits pride ourselves on never being seen. The Hares weren’t as cautious about that, and would even get into egg tossing contests with the children. That was another harebr—bad idea.

LO: I’m glad you brought up your great-grandfather. Last month I encouraged readers to learn as much as they could about their great-grandparents.

Do you know much about that greatgrandfather?

EB: I never did meet him, but he was very creative with slogans and such. He came up with substituting “hoppy” for “happy.” At one time he thought we were losing our popularity to the baby chicks and came up with the slogan, “You’re Nobody Until Some Bunny Loves You.” As you may know, you humans caught wind of that and changed it into a popular tune.

LO: It sounds like your great-grandfather was a muse. A final question: what is the biggest misconception about Easter Rabbits?

EB: Oh, goodness. That we come from Cadbury! We don’t come from England at all! We’re all descended from Germany.

You could never achieve the title of Easter Hare, Rabbit or Bunny unless your family came from Germany. Someday I’ll write all about us and put an end to the confusion and rumors.

LO: That’s a wonderful idea. I’d love to help with that if you need. Thank you, Easter Bunny for visiting with me today.

Polo in its prime

Penny Hannon recently resurrected a 1956 Santa Barbara Polo Club program—a perfect snapshot of Carpinteria history inside and outside the polo field.

Advertisements from local businesses fill the 32-page publication, along with images of polo and descriptions of the sport. Hannon’s copy is covered in signatures from the best players of the time.

Hannon’s life intersected with polo when she befriended the daughter of John Stringer, a professional player and regular at the club. Susan Stringer drove a yellow corvette to the area from Los Angeles, and would spend weekends with Hannon hanging around the polo club. The teens got into games for free (though they only cost 50 cents). A highlight of the scene, Hannon recalled, was being allowed to cool off the horses between chukkas (quarters).

N a n c y F o e r s t e r re cently made a joyous trip to Toronto to visit her son, daughter-in-law and 8-month-old granddaughter. Temps hovering around 10 degrees and snow falling over the few days of Foerster ’s visit didn’t keep the family from enjoying its time together. “We went to the shoe museum and enjoyed March break with all the children doing activities and even playing Twister at the museum,” Foerster said. Highlights were Portuguese and Venezuelan food, and, of course, Canadian poutin. “We attended the Maple Syrup Festival and ate bacon with syrup.

It was a fun-filled week I will never forget, and was happy to have my Coastal View News to show off!”
