Food drive feeds families in need

Indivisible Carpinteria recently teamed up with Albertsons to deliver 50 bags of non-perishables to residents in need at Peoples’ Self-Help Housing. Indivisible volunteers collected cash donations outside of Albertsons on July 3 and paired that with $250 donated by Indivisible Santa Barbara members to provide the local families with non-perishables, including peanut butter, pasta, tuna and beans. Indivisible has also delivered produce and raised funds with the help of Farm Cart owners Jason and Katie Lesh. Albertsons’ food drive also benefited the Santa Barbara Food Bank, which received over 200 bags of groceries thanks to shopper donations.

Cancer claims life of former CMS teacher

Former Carpinteria Middle School teacher George Flores, 65, passed away on June 20 after a battle with cancer. He retired earlier this year after teaching at Britton Middle School in Morgan Hills for 10 years. Starting in 1993, Flores taught physical science and biology at Carpinteria Unified School District. “He was well loved and an important part of our community for many years,” said CMS teacher Kim Castagna.

Columnist teaches art of pizza making

Ojai author, private chef and CVN columnist Randy Graham will teach an Aug. 13 class on how to make restaurant-quality pizza at home using pizza stones and traditional ingredients. The class will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lavender Inn in downtown Ojai. Recipes are included and signed copies of Graham’s Ojai Valley cookbooks will be available for purchase. Youth Drought Project turns kids into lawn killers

Teens wielding picks and shovels in the front yard of Chris and Jenny Keet’s Malibu Drive home may have looked to passersby like a chain gang serving a sentence, but the youths were earning a wage while helping the Keets conserve water and remove a lawn at no cost to them. Brad Smith, founder and director of the Youth Drought Project (YDP), facilitates lawn-removal projects all over the Santa Barbara area, a specialty niche with a twist. He exclusively hires high school and college kids looking for a paycheck and willing to put in the elbow grease.

Smith’s program grew out of the Sweetwater Collaborative, a nonprofit that holds workshops and classes to educate the public in water conservation.

Teens, he noticed, have fewer opportunities these days to pick up afterschool, weekend and summer jobs. His lawnkilling projects provide pocket money for high school and college students looking for part-time work.

The program got a boost when, in the height of the drought, the State of California started offering rebates of up to $2,000 for homeowners who removed their lawns. Now Smith helps his clients secure the rebate through an online application process, and in the end, the state typically covers the full cost of the water conservation upgrade.

Jenny Keet said that when she and her husband bought their Malibu Drive home a couple years ago, the front yard

was a mess of “horrible crabgrass.” They wanted the prickly, water-guzzling lawn gone, but it wasn’t in their budget until a close friend and landscape designer, Natasha Elliott of Sweet Smiling Landscapes, connected them with the YDP and swore by Smith’s chemical-free methods.

The YDP uses sheet mulching to kill lawns, a process that involves covering the grass with a layer of cardboard then mulch. When the rains arrive and trigger growth, the grass shoots collide with the cardboard and can’t reach the sunlight they need to survive. With their energy reserves gone, the grass dies while the cardboard breaks down and becomes part of the soil-enhancing mulch.

Extra labor goes into the edges, Smith said, where grass shoots find their way to the sunlight. The YDP crew takes care to trench along the edges to remove roots and ensure that the grass doesn’t creep back in. Most landscapers, Smith said, will use several treatments of Roundup to kill lawns, but even multiple applications can fail to eradicate grass.

Other water-saving elements can be incorporated into YDP projects. At the Keets’ home, the crew added a rainwater harvesting swale. Two downspouts from the roof feed water into a contoured basin where it will be retained instead of running into the streets. Plants are allowed to drink deeply, and the water that percolates past their roots recharges the groundwater basin.

New supe focuses on classrooms and community

Superintendent Diana rigby always wanted to get back to Carpinteria. The longtime educator lived in Carpinteria from 1986 to 2003 before returning to Massachusetts, where she’d grown up, to care for family. She pledged to come back to Carpinteria within three years. After 14 years in Massachusetts, where she presided over the 3,300-student Concord Public Schools and regional School District as superintendent, she successfully landed the position of Carpinteria Unified School District superintendent.

“It’s a real dream for me to serve Carpinteria and Summerland,” she said with cheer in the quieted summertime CuSD office. “Pinch me. I can’t believe it.” rigby got her start in the schools in special education classrooms, first as a speech specialist and then as a teacher.

She was always passionate about honing her skills and said she’d videotape herself to observe and improve her style and technique.

During her first time living in Carpinteria, she worked both with Ventura County schools and eventually as assistant superintendent in the Santa Barbara Unified School District, which she sees as a similar district to Carpinteria in its makeup. rigby applauds the Dual Language Immersion program that will begin this fall. She spent nearly her entire time in Concord advocating for Spanish instruction in classrooms, a program she says will finally get off the ground next year.

“I believe in options. I believe in providing the best options for top-notch excellence,” she said.

She taught special education instruction at Westmont College and worked as an administrator in the areas of professional development, instruction assessment and curriculum in Ventura County.

In her first two weeks on the job, Rigby said getting her bearings is the top objective. “I plan to get to know everybody.

They know more than I do. I’m here to

help them move ahead to continue to improve learning for students,” she said.

She’s walking into a district with much in flux, from Measure U construction breaking ground on every campus, to having endured a couple of tumultuous leadership years that saw Superintendent Micheline Miglis come and go—notably the day before the 2016-2017 school year began—and acting administrators and interims filling in the gaps.

Improvements underway thanks to the voter-supported $90-million Measure u bond only “provide the community and students the facilities they deserve to match the excellence of this school district.” And the recent past is the past, according to rigby, who prefers a forwardthinking approach and the pragmatism of seeing education at CuSD or anywhere as only measurable by what’s taking place in classrooms. rigby got her welcome at the July 11 CuSD Board of Education meeting after having attended her final Concord board meeting on June 27. The transition has been swift, and she said that listening is the greatest use of her time leading up to the opening of next school year. “My door’s open,” she said.

CuSD is planning a pre-back-to-school gathering for staff, which will partially serve as a meet and greet with rigby, and there will also be a community ice cream social for families to meet her. The events will be held in August but are yet to be scheduled.

Anyone meeting rigby at these events will doubtlessly be taken in by her warmth and enthusiasm. Among her favorite activities are water sports, tennis, golf, reading, and the list goes on.

Still, what she says she always most looks forward to is the first day of school. “My favorite day of the year is the first day of school. It’s like I never stopped being a student,” she said.

Obituaries

Michael Adam Cobb

Michael Adam Cobb transitioned from this earth on June 25, 2017, at the age of 52 surrounded by his loving family at home in Carpinteria. He reluctantly left behind his best friend, beloved wife and partner, Delia, their sweet cat Xena, and trio of Chihuahuas—Dalai Mama, Foxy Roxy and Harley Davidson. An awesome son to Russell Cobb and Donna Ushkow and loving brother to Patrice, Michael also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and countless friends and colleagues from all corners of the world.

Born and raised in Burbank, Cobb (or Cobber to many) began a lifelong love affair with sports, playing football for the Vikings and riding motorcycles at the early age of 6. By his teenage years, skateboarding and surfing began to tickle his fancy, but he continued to excel in football and went on to become a star quarterback at Burbank High School.

He graduated with honors from the school of real life and worked his tail off.

After 20 years in the world of medical sales and management, his life turned a corner and he became the Sales Manager for Channel Islands Surfboards—a dream job where he used to say “work and play blur.” Once he started there, not a day went by where he wasn’t flying that CI flag on his T-shirt, hat, knapsack and flip flops (sometimes all at the same time), and with stickers on his car, notebooks and computer.

Mike worked hard and played harder.

Whether it was camping trips and riding motorcycles through the deserts of California with his dad and uncle Duane or surf trips to Panama, Indonesia, Hawaii and his favorite Fiji—he ultimately lived to ride and rode to live.

Mike was an incredibly kind and generous soul. He was always one to lend a hand or a board—or any gear that he had. For example, not long ago, while gearing up alongside a fellow dirtbike racer whose threads were torn and tattered, he immediately dug out brand new extras he had in the car and gave it to his competitor. That’s just the kind of guy he was. Michael was always, ALWAYS, taking care of people.

He carved his way through life, always possessing the ability to turn a negative into a positive. Over the years he helped loved ones through difficult times.

Whether it was financial or emotional support or both, Mike was there.

Michael cared about the environment too, never passing by litter at his feet without picking it up—a hard impulse for him to control during his frequent trips to New York. He also cared deeply about animals. His one and only fight as a grom was with a kid who was beating on his dog—not Michael’s dog but the kid’s own dog. He supported animal rescue organizations on a regular basis and dreamed about one day opening a sanctuary. When it came time pick up the new addition from the animal shelter, he said to Delia, “We can’t take JUST ONE” and asked them to bring out the littlest dog they had with the littlest chance of being adopted. Michael would aptly name him Harley Davidson, a senior chihuahua

with a wide chest who loves to spin and burn out after a big pee on the grass.

He was creative to his core—not just in strategy but in execution as well, always paying attention to the details. He had a bitchin’ sense of style. You saw it in the clothes he wore, the bikes he drove and the boards he road.

He was a fierce poker player, a little bit of a pool shark, and he knew how to shake it on the dancefloor. He was a lover not a fighter but could easily get spicy and rise up to defend himself and his loved ones whenever and wherever necessary. His toughest fight began on New Year’s Eve, when he was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. It ended six months later when he joined his grandparents, uncle and the rest of his loving family in eternal life. May his spirit rise to the highest heights so he can thoroughly enjoy the drop when he visits with loved ones here on earth.

Donations can be made in Michael’s name to one of the following organizations: Sea Shepherd Conservation Society; Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine; East Valley Animal Shelter; Santa Barbara Animal Rescue.

The family will hold private memorial services in California and New York.

His greatest joy in life was being a father and grandfather, as Eddie was the happiest with his family. He enjoyed cooking, barbecuing, road trips around the country and travelling abroad. Whether it was a dozer, milk truck, cement truck or his own Peterbilt driving for CMT, he loved being behind the wheel and on throttle.

In the mid-1970’s he achieved a lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant and opened Casa Ayala on Linden Avenue.

Here is where he would spend his days and nights in the kitchen and behind the bar, ensuring all his friends and family had a great time. Many friendships were formed which led to weekly rounds at the golf course. In his later life he loved to frequent his house in Baja California, where he and his family created many memories with the friends he had made over the years, especially the EspinozaVallecillo families.

Edward will be remembered most for his passion for family, travel and living his life “my way.”

Services were held on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carpinteria, burial followed at Carpinteria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carpinteria High School Booster Club or FFA.

Edward “Eddie” C. Ayala 5/24/1937 – 7/19/2017

Edward “Eddie” C. Ayala passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family into God’s arms on July 19, 2017 in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was 80 years old.

Edward is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Ayala; three beautiful daughters, Katherine Arellano (Mike), Robin Loretto and Janine Ayala-Harner (Craig); grandchildren Alex, Kristin (Marc), Aaron (Kasey), Timothy, Amanda, Michael, Annika and Matthew; greatgrandchildren, Asher, Cruz and Tate; his sister Mary Ranson and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Gene and Bill Ayala, and two nephews.

Edward was born to Madeline Romero Sturtz and Angel Anthony Ayala in Santa Barbara, Calif. and lived in the Carpinteria Valley his entire life. As a young man, Eddie joined his family farming throughout the Carpinteria and Ventura area, which led to his love of FFA. His experience in FFA allowed him to raise and sell his steer, the proceeds of which were used to pay for his first car.

Eddie also enjoyed working at the polo fields tending to the horses. Like many Carpinterians, he had a love of athletics, excelling in both football and track. He was a Russell Cup medalist and received the American Legion Best Back Award in 1955. He attended school in Carpinteria from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1956. Upon graduation he attended Cal Poly SLO where he was a member of the Crops Club. He kept in touch with many of his CHS classmates with whom he recently celebrated his 60th high school reunion.

In 1959, he married Virginia Goena.

For most school children, the summer brings with it the promise of fun-filled camps, clubs and activities, yet many of these programs remain inaccessible for those with disabilities. For this reason, the Carpinteria unit of the United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara County has launched a pilot Summer Inclusion Program in which all children, regardless of physical or mental disadvantages, will have the opportunity to build friendships and enjoy the Carpinteria Club.

From July 26 through Aug. 23, the Carpinteria Club offers a weekly program on Wednesday mornings with the goal of ensuring that any child who desires to join will be not be denied simply because of their disadvantages. In order to accomplish this goal, the club will make a series of modifications, such as soliciting parental input and allowing parents to observe their children from the building’s patio.

These adaptations were praised by Caroline Alarcon whose 10-year-old son, Sebastian Torres, has used a wheelchair for the past two years as a result of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. She describes the program as a great stepping stone for both her and her son, stating, “He’s got a larger-than-life personality so it’s hard for me to just put him somewhere. He needs to have constant supervision and I want him to have a really good experience so that he’ll be willing to try other things on his own.”

The program was inspired by the Carpinteria Club’s hiring of Amy Brooks.

Brooks has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around, but she loves working with children. She joined the organization earlier this year as an Inclusion Specialist and has worked tirelessly

with the administration to bring about the inclusion program. She recognizes its importance, not only for the children with disabilities who will now have access to the Carpinteria Club, but also for those able-bodied children who will grow from the interactions.

Brooks notes, “In my experience, the earlier and more often kids and teens are given exposure to people and experiences that are different, the easier it is to learn compassion and empathy, gain understanding, see curiosity positively, and build bonds without, or with less, bias.”

This echoes a statement made by Alarcon, who also sees the value of bringing all kids together: “To have other kids see and build friendships and not be afraid to ask questions is really important because Carpinteria is a very small community and ... so it’s important that they build those relationships that are long lasting.”

Brooks also sees the importance of this program in terms of what message it sends to the community about people living with disabilities. “Attempting full inclusion demonstrates that we find value and worth in each and every person; it shows that we believe no one person is better than anyone else, and that we all have a purpose here.”

Although the program will only be offered at the Carpinteria Club this summer, the United Boys & Girls Club administration stresses that its ultimate goal is extending the program across Santa Barbara County. Through its expansion, the Summer Inclusion Program will serve as a great leap forward in terms of achieving the organization’s mission of enabling all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

In an attempt to keep drivers safe, we have contacted Caltrans regarding the extremely dangerous onramp at Casitas Pass Road entering 101 southbound.

As you may also have experienced, the temporary construction cement barriers prohibit drivers from being able to see freeway traffic. The onramp is the same length as it was before construction began, but because of the addition of these cement barriers, there is no way to see the cars that you will encounter when you reach the bottom of the on ramp.

In fact, the traffic on the freeway cannot see the oncoming cars until they also are at the base of the onramp, and when the cars reach the same place at the same time, there is nowhere for the entering cars to go.

My husband and I were entering the freeway at Casitas Pass Road a week or so ago, and luckily he was at the wheel.

Miraculously, he was able to squeeze in between two big rigs that were barreling along in the slow lane traveling in excess of the 55 mile per hour construction zone speed limit. Had I, or an inexperienced driver, been at the wheel I cringe to think what might have happened. A lady at our gym told us her husband reached the bottom of the onramp and was not able to merge due to the flow of traffic, and had nowhere to go. He had to stop completely, and was rammed by a truck coming down the on ramp behind him.

Luckily, the truck climbed on top of his car, and again luckily no one was in the back seat. If he had also been in a higher car (a truck or SUV), he would have been pushed into the freeway traffic.

We have written extensive communications with Caltrans and the Department of Transportation as well as copying our city council. The Caltrans representative has assured us that a comprehensive review of this onramp has been conducted and they have determined it to be safe.

We disagree wholeheartedly.

It is our opinion that this onramp should be closed. We are telling everyone we know to avoid this dangerous onramp by using Bailard, but we cannot warn everyone. Thank you for listening to our concern for the safety of our fellow Carpinterians and our visitors.

8th Street project unwelcome in neighborhood

What do you love about Carpinteria?

Is it the small-town homey “living room” (from the General Plan) feeling of the historic downtown area? If this is one of the things you love about our town (whether you live downtown or not), it is time to make your voice heard! There is a contemporary, solid wall, box–shaped residence in the works for 5157 8th Street that will set precedent if allowed to go through. You are probably thinking, as I was, that as the project goes through the process, a project that does not fit the General Plan would not be permitted and the owners would be asked to rethink their design. Well, not always. How

does a building you might see along the highway in Malibu fit in with the cottage/ bungalow area in Carpinteria get passed?

The ARB and Planning Commission, whose jobs are to review projects for fit with our General Plan, have approved this project despite noting the style would be a big change from the existing setting and the surrounding area. The staff report to the ARB comments that the design “would not retain the original character of the small beach-oriented downtown community”! When discussing whether or not there are other buildings in the area with similar design, an ARB member noted that there is a precedent set for the flat roof design on the Smart and Final building. Do we really want to emulate the Smart and Final building? Next is the Planning Commission. Dismayingly, the project passed with a 2-1 vote, two members being absent. Their decision seemed to be highly predicated on the fact that the ARB passed it.

This architecture style does not fit in with the small town charm that is Carpinteria. The passing of this design sets precedent for the Malibu-ization of Carpinteria. The City Council can stop the project. Let the City Council hear your voice!

No love for new house

I am writing in support of an appeal filed with the City of Carpinteria to reverse approval of a new construction project at 5157 8th Street.

The design of the project may fit a different Carpinteria location, but the 5100 block of 8th Street is part of historic downtown. The home currently standing at 5157 belonged to my family for over 70 years and is over 100 years old.

My understanding is the replacement of the original windows prevented official historical designation. Had that been given, the new project would never have been considered. The city’s General Plan stresses preservation of beach town character in the downtown “old town” neighborhoods. The approved project does not say historic charm nor does it say small beach town image. It is contemporary and completely inconsistent with this theme.

At the July 3 Planning Commission meeting, two members were absent.

Given the considerable dissent that night, it seems a decision should have been postponed until all members were present.

Not only did the Architectural Review Board grant its approval based upon some questionable comparisons, but because endorsement by this advisoryonly board was accorded such weight, it felt as though a decision had been made before the Planning Commission meeting began! Once the project was formally approved, one commissioner chuckled that we would all “learn to love” the proposed home. With all due respect, Commissioner, this is not likely.

I urge public support of the appeal to overturn approval of construction at 5157 8th Street.

City to consider district elections

Accused of violating the Voting Rights Act, the City of Carpinteria will hold a special city council meeting on Monday, July 31 to discuss district elections. The city recently received a certified letter threatening legal action unless it adopts district-based elections to resolve claims of “racially polarized voting” in Carpinteria.

Several residents spoke out at this week’s regular city council meeting on July 24 in favor of establishing voting districts to promote greater diversity on the governing body. Jatzibe Sandoval said she was very alarmed that in the last 20 years only one Latino had been elected to the Carpinteria City Council. Santa Barbara and Goleta both adopted district elections in recent years, and Sandoval pointed out that in Santa Barbara at least one predominantly Latino district enjoyed far greater voter turnout as a result.

Matt Lowe noted that Carpinteria is more than 40 percent Latino. “That’s an important number that needs to be represented and listened to,” he said.

Harry Manuras, a longtime Carpinterian who has managed several local election campaigns, pointed out that the existing system has proven results. He thanked the current council and those prior for helping to shape a city beloved by many. “We all get a chance to run for office in this community,” he said. “Let’s reflect on what we have and remind ourselves that we have been successful.”

The special meeting on July 31 will begin at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Mayor Fred Shaw requested that a Spanish translator be on hand.

which do not require sprinklers for additions or remodels, just new homes. Stein said, “In an older home, people that try to remodel aren’t going to be able to afford to tear up the rest of their house and add (sprinkler systems).”

The sprinkler conversation started last spring when the fire district initially adopted new code mandating sprinkler systems in homes remodeled by 50 percent or more. Stein and Councilman Gregg Carty, both contractors, argued that being forced to add sprinklers could keep people from upgrading their homes and that smoke detectors are more critical life-saving devices.

A misunderstanding of the council’s direction resulted in the fire district revising the proposed code back to existing city fire code rather than state code. This time around, councilmembers characterized the existing city code as unreasonable and clarified their intent to follow the less stringent state code. The discussion prompted Fire Marshal Ed Foster to say, “It seemed reasonable to this city council six years ago, it seemed reasonable three years ago, and I’m somewhat taken aback that for whatever reason you feel that it’s not reasonable to continue the current language that’s in the code from 2010.”

MTD updates council

Bus fares collected by the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) were down $1 million last year, a trend that may prompt a fare hike or a service cut if it continues, MTD General Manager Jerry Estrada told the city council during an MTD status report on July 24.

This year, MTD’s budget anticipates reserve spending, but new state legislation could dedicate additional funds to public transit and save the agency from taking measures such as fare increases or service decreases.

In Carpinteria, 86 percent of ridership takes place on the 20 and 21X buses that travel between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, while the Seaside Shuttle represents just 14 percent of local ridership. New electric shuttles that are 8 feet longer than existing vehicles are on order and slated to arrive in the fall.

In anticipation of Caltrans’ Linden and Casitas Overpass Project dramatically changing traffic circulation in Carpinteria, most notably what Estrada called the “punch through” of Via Real, MTD will begin to consider changes to future bus routes.

Providing assistance

On July 13 at approximately 8 p.m. deputies responded to the beach end of Linden Avenue on a report of an intoxicated man stumbling around barefoot and attempting to open car doors and enter homes. Deputies found a man matching the given description staggering on Sandyland Road and asked if they could speak to him, but the man refused and continued walking. Deputies stopped the man because there were movies showing in the park on Linden Field with many families and children in attendance.

There was strong smell of alcohol on the man the reporting deputy noted, and he admitted to having had “a few beers.”

When he was handcuffed the man began yelling obscenities and refused to get in the back of the patrol car. An additional deputy assisted the reporting deputy and both of them “were able to help” the man into the back of the patrol car. The man was then transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

A few too many

On July 14 at approximately 9:20 p.m. a deputy working security at the St. Joseph fair was approached by a worker in the beer tent, who said that they had denied serving alcohol to a heavily intoxicated man. The deputy located the man, who was wearing a black leather jacket, and noticed a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and an open 24-ounce can of Modelo beer in an inside pocket of the jacket. There was a second unopened Modelo in another one of the man’s jacket pockets, and although he said he lived in Carpinteria, he could not provide an address. The deputy believed that the man was too intoxicated to care for himself or the safety of others, and he arrested him and took the man to Santa Barbara County Jail.

The deputy found two cans of spray paint under the driver’s seat. The man in the backseat admitted to spray painting a word and was issued a citation.

On July 18 at approximately 7:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area around Linden and Carpinteria avenues on a report of an intoxicated man carrying a dog. When a deputy asked the 33-yearold man how much he’d had to drink, the man said “not enough.” As they arrived, the reporting deputy noted that he saw the man staggering and having trouble keeping his balance. The man said that he was staying in the bushes, and deputies found numerous empty bottles and beer cans in the area. He also said that there was no one who could come pick him up. Deputies arrested the man for public intoxication, and called animal control to pick up the dog.

Prepare to laugh when “Fools” takes the stage

When “Fools” play director David Holmes says, “The plot is very dumb.

The characters are very dumb,” it’s easy to assume he feels no love for the Plaza Playhouse Theater’s upcoming production. But then, with a wide grin, he calls the show “brilliant” and says, “You just get swept up in it. I expect the audience to be laughing from the beginning to the end.”

Set in the late 1800s, the Neil Simon comedy follows Leon Tolchinsky, a schoolteacher in a small Ukrainian village plagued with a 200-year-old curse that makes everyone dumb as dirt. Tolchinsky falls in love with the beautiful Sophia, who, when asked her favorite color, responds, “Yellow ... because it doesn’t stick to your fingers as much.”

Holmes chuckles every time he talks about the play. Simon, he said, wrote it in

search of failure. His ex-wife was slated to receive most of the proceeds from his next play, so he put pen to paper in hopes of selling as few tickets as possible. But the irrepressibly clever writer whose stage credits include “Biloxi Blues” and “The Odd Couple” just “can’t write a flop,” Holmes concluded.

Like any good theater production, this one had some drama backstage. Less than two weeks before curtains rise, Holmes learned that his leading lady couldn’t perform. He quickly held another round of auditions and cast Carpinterian Alyssa Hadfield in the role of Sophia.

A scheduling conflict had kept Hadfield from auditioning with the rest of the cast months ago, but when the original Sophia bowed out, Hadfield’s friend and Plaza stage manager, Kathryn Bruington, informed her immediately. Picking up the role meant memorizing a lead character’s lines and blocking in short order, but Hadfield rose to the occasion and was off book with a week to spare.

Hadfield, who works as a manager at C’est Cheese by day, said that the situation was, “slightly stressful, but I knew I could do it in that amount of time.” She learned her lines and reported that, “Sophia is finally stepping forward.”

Stefan Wayne plays Hadfield’s love interest and star of the show, the schoolteacher who can only break the curse of stupidity by successfully educating Sophia or watching her marry the only descendent of the person who originally cast the curse, Count Gregor, the arrogant-yet-idiotic villain of “Fools.”

Holmes came out of retirement to direct the show benefitting Plaza Playhouse. He brings nearly 40 years of experience acting and directing in the Santa Barbara area. The cast of “Fools,” Holmes said, has been a delight to work with, and he can’t remember ever laughing as much through the rehearsals of any other production. He calls the play “pure escapism,” two hours in which the audience can step out of the problems plaguing the real world and into the deliciously ludicrous world of Neil Simon’s imagination.

Showdates for “Fools” are July 28, 29, 30 and Aug. 4, 5 and 6. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission, or $12 for seniors or students. This vegan and gluten-free dish is a favorite of mine. It is a savory dish of cooked garbanzo beans (chickpeas), onion, garlic, bay leaves and various Indian spices. It gets its heat from small red chilies, and although I only use one chili in this recipe, you can add more if you like it hotter.

As a prelude to the big party up the road, Friends of the Carpinteria Library throws an annual Fiestastyle celebration that may be smaller but boasts just as much soul. Supported by the Fund for Santa Barbara, the local nonprofit puts on a free event that charms attendees with Spanish dancing, mariachi music, games, arts and crafts, and munchies. This year’s event, held on July 22 at Seaside Park, gave participants a taste of what’s to come in Santa Barbara and an opportunity for a similar cultural experience without the hassle of traffic and crowds.

What a doll

Jamie Throgmorton claims that her “basic thing in life is curiosity,” which may explain the motivation behind her collection of Russian nesting dolls, each of which holds several surprises within.

She has 220 dolls, but once disassembled they multiply to well over 1,000 pieces.

Throgmorton began amassing the stunning art pieces in her 20s after obtaining her first matryoshka as a high school exchange student in Peru. Later, in college, on her drives home from U.C. Berkeley to Thousand Oaks, she would stop at knick-knack stores in Solvang and at Santa Claus Lane to seek out new items for her collection. At first, she displayed all of the disassembled shells on her shelves, but they had to nest back inside to make room for other dolls as their numbers grew.

When deciding to buy a matryoshka, Throgmorton says, “I always look for the quality of the eyes and the emotion that’s expressed.” Her travels over the past 30 years have brought her dolls from Japan, Eastern Europe and Russia. Though her hunt for matryoshkas has slowed, she still finds interesting items to add to her collection, such as a soon-to-arrive nesting doll containing 24 ever-smaller figurines.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was a boon to Throgmorton’s collection. With the end of the Cold War, Soviet artists freely used their talents with the matryoshka as their canvas. Unlike the mass-produced factory dolls, these were intricate and ornate with unique designs. Throgmorton owns unique figures hand painted by now-famous artists.

Not all of her dolls have the traditional rosy-cheeked babushka motif. Some depict families, with shells painted as father, mother, children and baby, which can be as big as the tip of a pinky finger.

Others contain collections of tiny, matching pieces designed to help children learn to count. Some have more humorous designs, such as one depicting different Russian political leaders (purchased during Gorbachev’s presidency), another

Throgmorton prefers the more detailed and enchanting items. She owns some with intricate designs etched into the wood and others adorned with tiny pieces of straw. One such work of art is a matryoshka from St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. The shells display paintings from the museum that reflect the social classes of 19thcentury Russia, the outermost representing the aristocracy and the innermost the poor.

The more eccentric pieces fascinate Throgmorton most, since she believes the nesting doll is an interesting canvas that allows artists to express themselves in different, unique ways.

Young writer embraces her weird

My name is Lauren Graf, and I’ve had the pleasure of writing “Keep Carpinteria Weird” this summer. I am 18 and will be attending California Lutheran University this fall. My internship with Coastal View News let me try my hand at journalism.

Writing articles was great fun, and I enjoyed interviewing the interesting folks of Carpinteria. I believe that we are all part of Carpinteria’s peculiar community in some way. With that, here are five things that make me weird.

1. I am obsessed with ghosts. I’m terrified of actually seeing one, but my curiosity has brought me to some spooky spots, such as forgotten southwestern towns, the RMS Queen Mary and Seattle’s underground tunnels.

2. My brain has something called “synesthesia,” which means my mind makes connections between the senses where most people don’t. It’s different for everyone, but for me, music has color and numbers have personalities. One in 23 people have it, so check it out!

3. I collect playbills from every performance I attend. I am proud of the collection, but I feel like a hoarder since I store them beneath my bed.

4. This one is a little gross, but I can fold my tongue into a three-leaf clover.

5. For my senior-year talent show, I performed the Super Mario Brothers theme song on flute dressed as Luigi, mustache and all!

Flight school: Paragliders ride the Carpinteria currents

Man’s fascination with flying dates back as far as the species’ existence. Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Codex on the Flight of Birds,” a personal notebook made up of detailed observations of different birds flying, traces the science back to the 1500s. On any given day that the winds are right, that thirst for human flight is being quenched by paragliders launching from the east end of Carpinteria Avenue.

“One of the things about the sport of paragliding that’s kind of different from a lot of sports is that you get to start having fun right away,” said Rob Sporrer, owner of Eagle Paragliding, an instructional school located in Santa Barbara. Sporrer has decades of experience in paragliding, including as the three-time coach of the U.S. team at the world championships. His school regularly launches first-time paragliders into the sky within 90 minutes of beginning the course. Although Eagle Paragliding uses Elings Park in Santa Barbara for its courses, the popularity of paragliding essentially originated right here in the 93013.

Sporrer learned his craft from Carpinteria flight guru Tom Truax, who owned a local company called Sky Sports back in 1995. “Tom Truax, he’s the legend … he’s done so many flights from Santa Barbara and landed out by Lake Piru,” said Sporrer of the prolific pilot whose nickname “Sundowner” came from the late afternoon Santa Barbara winds he’s used to his advantage on numerous occasions.

But that, of course, is a whole other level of the sport. Beginning paragliders may start solo but often take a first “tandem” flight, where the student travels as a passenger with an instructor on a paraglider built to accommodate two. “For some people there’s no chance that they want to do solo; they just wzant to check it out,” explained Sporrer.

Even though there have been fatal accidents tied to paragliding in other areas over the years, the long-time instructor claims that the only injuries that he’s experienced since opening the school in 1998 have been sprained ankles during landings. “They (the public) just assume that it’s this risky, daring thing … and we get 10-year-old little boys and girls that come out to the flight park and fly solo their first day,” he said.

PARAGLIDERS cont. from page 17 Paragliding and hang gliding took off in the south county in the early 1970s with Truax as one of the early pioneers. Because of the weight of the original apparatus (approximately 80 pounds), the hang glider became less popular than the lighter, more flexible paraglider, which Europeans started bringing to the States in the mid-1980s. “Paragliders are very practical; they fold down like regular luggage that you can load onto a plane,” explained Sporrer. But because hang gliders are built more solidly, they are better equipped to handle heavier winds.

Paragliding has become very popular, particularly in the western region of the country in states such as Colorado, Oregon and Utah, primarily due to the multitude of mountain ranges. However, Eagle Paragliding offers trips all over to places like Colombia, Mexico, Europe and Alaska. “You don’t have to be an athlete to do this, either,” assured Sporrer. Unlike many other sports such as skiing or surfing, the potential is there for anyone to earn their wings right away.

Carpinteria was laid a townsite in 1887, what is now knownroad as Old Townin The Ogan family mayout beas best known now for the lovely tree-lined named having carried the name given by the Spanish soldiers up to that time.

The town, its honor, but its contribution to Carpinteria traces to the town’s earliest days. Lemon Industry At the present time, the two main industries are lemon and avocado culture with the former far in advance in point of importance. While the avocado is grown very successfully here, the output is small compared with the lemon industry and in point of labor involved there is no comparison.

The lemon industry has grown from a few carloads in 1910 to between fifteen hundred and two thousand carloads per year at the present time. The two large packing houses handle about two-thirds of the product of the valley and furnish practically all of the labor offered. Each packing house has a large picking crew with the necessary implements and vehicles, while in each house there are about one hundred packers, washers and warehousemen. Only a comparatively few acres were devoted to lemon culture thirty years ago, while at the present time practically all of the tillable land of the valley has been set to lemons. Thirty years ago, the same could advisedly be said of walnut trees, but all those trees have been taken out and the land planted to lemons.

Two new faces recently joined Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s Board of Trustees. John Franklin and Sharon Organista, both of whom dedicate significant time and energy to community causes, have added the Girls Inc. board to their schedules.

Franklin is now retired after serving as the manager of the Carpinteria branch of Montecito Bank & Trust for more than 20 years. He served on the board of the Carpinteria Unified School District for more than two decades, including four years as president. He is a former board member of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Chamber’s Junior Carpinterian of the Year scholarship committee. He is also on the board of the Summerland Sanitary District and a member of the finance committee for the Santa Barbara/Ventura County YMCA. He also serves on the finance and facilities committees at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Organista is a travel consultant with Montecito Village Travel and a longtime supporter of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. She owned and operated Carpinteria Florist before entering the travel business in 1991. An active member in the community, Organista first became involved with Girls Inc. Carpinteria as a volunteer more than 25 years ago. She is also a member of the Carpinteria Woman’s Club and previously served on the board of the Boys Club of Carpinteria.

Lions attend training retreat

On July 23, Carpinteria Lions Club President Clyde Freeman and Past District Governor Ron Hurd joined representatives from other chapters in the southern region in Oak View for a day of leadership training. The leadership skill set training retreat was led by District Governor Norm McDaniel with the assistance of the International Director Alan Lundgren from Arizona, as well as other local district officers. It not only covered ways to strengthen and grow clubs, but also the various resources and tools offered by Lions International, and updates regarding web pages and social media enhancements. “Everyone in attendance felt it was a very rewarding day,” reported Freeman.

Rotary learns how to lower utility bills

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria learned about emPower, a Santa Barbara County program that helps homeowners overcome obstacles to making energy saving improvement to their homes. The program connects homeowners with various incentives for home upgrades that lower utility bills and conserve energy.

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria will be held on Thursday, Aug. 3, at noon at the Carpinteria Lions Club Park, 6197 Casitas Pass Road. Baby steps

I nearly tripped over the little, fourlegged fuzzball that stumbled and staggered beneath the fence. Only a tiny island fox pup could squeeze through that narrow opening at the historic Scorpion Ranch on the southeast end of Santa Cruz Island and the Channel Islands National Park.

It’s extremely rare to see an adorable island fox pup, but to see them day in and day out, is even more of a fleeting occurrence. I could remember only two other occasions when I’d seen pups on the islands. This was the first time I’ve had this kind of consistent look at this apex predator, the largest land mammal on the craggy archipelago, with its young.

A full-grown island fox tips the scales at 3 to 4 pounds, and the pups are mostly fur.

When that lone island fox pup emerged from its den beneath an overgrown fig tree leftover from the island’s ranching era, I instantly sized up the curious pup.

It was about the size of my palm. Its fur matted from dewy overcast, the pup was seeking some much-needed morning sun.

It curled up into a tight fur ball and easily slept the morning away.

I came back in the early evening, and still there was only one pup showing itself beneath the fig tree. However, early the next morning I went for a trail run. As I ran by the fig tree, I noticed two island fox pups soaking in the sun. I cut my run short and sprinted up to the campground for my camera. I came back down and found the pups rough housing to no end.

They were in serious wrestling mode.

There were games of chase, the shredding of a fig tree leaf, climbing the stairs leading to the backdoor of the Gherini Ranch, standing on their wobbly hind legs as they tried to access an impenetrable fox box—the list of island activities went on and on.

However, I would have several more run-ins before I observed the pups with their mother. One day both pups were outside the fence when two adult island foxes appeared out of the thick grass. Initially I thought it was the pups’ parents, but when the adults trotted by, they never

glanced the pups’ way, virtually ignoring them. You wouldn’t know it looking at the youngsters though. They were completely submissive. Their stubby, little tails wagging furiously and their tiny ears flattening below their heads until the adult island foxes passed them by.

When I eventually saw the pups interact with an adult it was clear this was their mom. Beyond all the frenetic nursing, which I observed while she was standing with the ravenous pups underneath her, it was the many tender moments shared in the shadows of the fig tree. It was fun watching the pups roll over her and all the licking and cleaning, which didn’t take long on a fist-sized pups. Nuzzling between pups and mom was especially common before and after nursing.

Then mom would get up and saunter off, usually returning to her den and leaving the pups to explore on their own. They typically seemed a little bewildered once alone, but the momentary feeling of abandonment quickly seemed to subside and the pups were back into play mode, the expansive playground at Scorpion Ranch in Scorpion Canyon just one of many countless deeply cut canyons carved into Santa Cruz Island and surely active with inquisitive island fox pups.

Heavy hitting takes CVN to Europe

Lisa Rader and Mike Quigley traveled to Europe for the Bavarian Classic Championships in Munich, Germany. The USA White team won the softball championships 19-17. Quigley accounted for nine RBIs with a grand slam home run, a three-run home run, a double-scoring two and a sacrifice fly. The U.S. team also won the Vienna Championships the following weekend in Austria, and Rader and Quigley enjoyed stops at the scenic border between Germany and Austria, as well as the view from the Alps (pictured) looking down upon Salsburg, Austria.
