A new feel-good fundraiser launched by HELP of Carpinteria gives participants a chance to complete an act of kindness while feeding the coffers of the local nonprofit.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has received a large number of reports countywide the past several days regarding a familiar phone scam where the caller poses as a Sheriff’s deputy and tells the resident that there is a bench warrant issued for his or her arrest for failing to show up for jury duty. The caller then offers to resolve the warrant if the citizen purchases a pre-paid credit card and provides the card number during a subsequent call. In many cases, the scammer used the name of a deputy actually employed by the Sheriff’s Office. The call appears to be coming directly from the Sheriff’s Office making it seem even more legitimate.

“If you receive a phone call of this nature, you should immediately hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency where the caller claims to be calling from to verify the information,” stated a press release from the Sheriff’s Office. “Do not be fooled by your caller identification, even if it appears that the number is coming from the Sheriff’s Office or an 805 area code. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information.”

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office will hold two upcoming “Scams Targeting Seniors” presentations in Goleta with tips on how to spot scams and avoid becoming a victim. The first will held on Monday, Aug. 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Positano Community Room, 11 Camino de Vido, and the second will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Miller Community Center, 5579 Armitos Ave.

Free summer program offered at library

Summer programs aimed at stretching young minds have arrived at the Carpinteria Library. Between now and the start of school on Aug. 22, the summer program will be available and free for children on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Carpinteria Library multipurpose room, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. This week’s theme is Fiesta Arts and Crafts, next week’s is Respect and Kindness, and the final week is Hawaiian Culture and Craft.

Additionally, the library will host a pair of arts and crafts workshops to kick-off the annual Dia de los Muertos event sponsored by the FUND for Santa Barbara and the Friends of the Carpinteria Library. The Dia de los Muertos event takes place in October, but free workshops will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 and 19 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Carpinteria Library multipurpose room. Stockton retires from city

Linda Stockton clocked in for her final day at city hall on Friday, July 28, after shining her smile on the residents of Carpinteria for nearly 28 years. The longtime receptionist—who held positions in various city departments during her long tenure—was hired as a single mother raising four daughters on her own. Now she is grandmother to four and great-grandmother to one. Asked why she decided to retire now, she replied, “I’m just getting tired.”

City Manager Dave Durflinger called Stockton a dedicated employee who

served the community well and was a privilege and pleasure to work with.

“Nineteen years ago when I dropped off my employment application at City Hall, (Stockton) was the first person I met,” Durflinger said. “I still remember the positive impression of the organization that she left with me.”

Stockton, who lives in Ventura, plans to return to Carpinteria frequently in her retirement. It’s a community she loves.

She also plans to do more painting and some traveling. Two of her kids live in Washington, and one lives in Maine.

City accused of violating law, may switch to district elections

Under threat of litigation, cities statewide are shifting to district elections, a wave that will likely sweep up Carpinteria whether its elected officials like it or not. The Carpinteria City Council held a special meeting on July 31 to discuss adopting district elections in order to avoid a lawsuit and increase Latino voices on the city council.

“It’s a matter of reaching a balance, of equal representation,” said Francisco Gonzalez, a lifelong Carpinterian and one of two plaintiffs for the potential lawsuit.

“Latinos make up half of this community, and they’re struggling.”

A letter received by the city on July 5 threatens legal action unless the city corrects an alleged violation of the California Voting Rights Act. The act that was signed into law in 2002 has been used to change voting systems in dozens of California cities where “racially polarized voting” constitutes a violation. In Carpinteria, which is nearly 50 percent Latino, only a handful of Latinos have been elected to the Carpinteria City Council, and no Latino or Hispanic has been elected to the Carpinteria City Council since 2008.

Since its incorporation in 1965, Carpinteria has had an at-large voting system, whereby voters elect all five members of the city council. In a district election, the city would be divided into jurisdictions, and residents of those areas would elect a single representative. Potential plaintiffs Gonzales and Jatzibe Sandoval have indicated that they would be amenable to creating five districts in Carpinteria, or four with a mayor elected from the city at large.

Cities that have fought Voting Rights Act lawsuits have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars before ultimately changing their voting structure by order of the court. The city’s legal counsel Dylan Johnson told the council that about 66 California cities and 150 school districts have switched to district elections since 2006, and in no reported case did the public agency prevail in litigation.

Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Goleta have all shifted into district elections or settled pending lawsuits by adopting a long-term implementation plan. To satisfy the law, the city must adopt a resolution to switch to district elections within 45 days, and within 90 days of adoption, the city must make the switch.

By doing so, the lawsuit could not move forward, and the city’s obligation to cover the plaintiff’s legal fees would be capped at $30,000.

Alternatively, the city could settle with the prospective plaintiffs. Goleta negotiated a plan to implement district elections in 2022, after the 2020 U.S. Census provides the most up-to-date data to create districts.

Several residents turned out Monday night to voice support for the adoption of district elections. Sandoval, one of the prospective plaintiffs, asked the council to consider the many benefits of electing representatives from voters’ own neighborhoods. “I want to be able to know

the person running,” she said. “I want to know that he lives down the street from me.”

Allegations in the letter do not imply that the city council or voters are intentionally discriminating against Latinos, but they do claim that past discrimination has disenfranchised the Latino population. Carpinteria’s history of discrimination includes the segregation of schools, the movie theater and even the real estate market.

“As a result of its history of discrimination and segregation, school attendance, housing patterns, and community involvement have been affected to the present,” states the letter. “(Latinos) were not part of the civic power structure, and therefore did not participate as much in city council election or other municipal affairs. Latinos did not run for city council because they did not think they could win.”

Councilmembers agreed that the dais is absent of diversity. Councilman Wade Nomura noted that the council lacks gender and ethnic diversity, and Councilman Al Clark pointed out that all the councilmembers are over the age of 60.

Councilman Gregg Carty said that though he wholeheartedly supports equality, he has concerns about creating voting districts. “I do have some fears of lines being drawn ... I’ve always looked at Carpinteria as one community and I’d hate to see it divided.”

Clark said he supported district elections as a means of improving inclusion, but noted that he is leery of councilmembers acting favorably to their specific district at the cost of the city. Councilmembers, he said, would be beholden to the people in their neighborhood, not residents throughout the city.

Not everyone pushing to convert cities to district elections is driven by equality and justice, Councilman Brad Stein noted.

Profiteering lawyers have taken advantage of the law, Stein pointed out. “This is what it’s becoming, a way to make a quick buck,” he said.

Proponents of the change, however, argued that district elections are the right fix to the problem of underrepresentation, and considerations of how attorneys might benefit from lawsuits detracts from the bigger issue. “The legal system is a voice of the most voiceless in a community,” said Jacqueline Inda.

The council will hold a closed-session meeting on Monday, Aug. 7 to discuss the legal matter. The 45-day deadline to take action lands on Aug. 17, so the matter will likely be on the open-session agenda of the regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 14.

Lions make a move

One of the many traditions of the various Lion Clubs is visits to meetings and events held by other area clubs. The Carpinteria Club has begun their rounds of visiting other local clubs, and on July 25, four members attended the lunch meeting of the Goleta Club and then joined the Ojai Valley Club for a dinner meeting the following day. Much to the surprise of the Carpinteria members, the Ojai Valley Club had prepared barbecue tri-tip and chicken, with beans, corn on the cobb, garlic bread and salad. Although the menu was very similar to traditional Carpinteria Lions fare, the visitors enjoyed the camaraderie with their fellow Lions and look forward to several other visitations.

Obituary

Marie S. Granaroli 10/22/1924 – 7/25/2017

Marie was born in Santa Barbara, grew up in Carpinteria and graduated from Carpinteria High School. In 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Angelo P. Granaroli. Marie was a bookkeeper in her early years in Santa Barbara.

Together she and Ange ran APG Inc., a ranch management business, where Marie oversaw the finances and Ange managed the properties, along with their own avocado ranch.

Marie was an avid world traveler, enjoyed skiing until she was 82, played tennis, bridge and loved social events.

She was a member of the Santa Barbara Women’s Club, the California Women for Agriculture, the Carpinteria Seniors group and the Carpinteria Alzheimer’s support group. Marie was an active participant in the Avocado Festival winning many awards over the years, and she and Ange were named honorary chairs in 2007. In her fifties, Marie took up skiing, joined the Santa Barbara Ski Club, and for many years held the position of

trip leader. She embraced the friendships made deeply, which continued until she took her final breath.

Marie is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Angelo Granaroli. She is survived by her son David; daughter Carolyn Frary (Dale); grandchildren Jared Frary (Toni Ann), Collin Granaroli (Nikki), Brianna Balch (Casey) and Danielle Granaroli; her six great-grandchildren and her brother-inlaws Steve and Gene Granaroli.

Marie was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a positive loving matriarch to her family and a friend to many. Marie had a wonderful fulfilling life until the end. The family sends their thanks to those who visited her over the last few weeks; she loved you all dearly!

Mom, may you and Dad continue your love for each other together!

Gifts in Memory of Marie may be made to the Carpinteria Chapter of the California Women for Agriculture or the Carpinteria Education Foundation. We invite family and friends to celebrate Marie’s life on Sept. 30, 2017, at 2 p.m., 1390 Casitas Pass Road.

In praise of architectural variety

When I first heard that an oversized modern house had been approved by the ARB, I was concerned because I love the charming cottages that line many of our streets in Carpinteria. It would be a shame to spoil the cohesion and historical nature of those blocks by plunking down a starkly modern house in the middle of them. I was surprised at the fuss, however, when I saw that the block in question was already an eclectic mix of newer and older homes. The proposed house is attractive and appears to be the appropriate size and height for the lot. Moreover, the lot is half a block from Smart and Final and next door to and across the street from large, modernish, boxy apartment buildings.

Given the variety of architectural styles that already exist in the neighborhood, is it fair to expect someone to remodel a house without the freedom to choose their own design? Judging from the pictures in the paper, the proposed design is contemporary, but uses natural materials to soften its lines and add visual interest. It seems to me that it would make a nice addition to the neighborhood.

If we wanted conformity, we would live in planned communities where everything is dictated— from the color of the houses to the porch lights. Instead, the ARB does an excellent job of guiding architects to work within the guidelines but without requiring houses to be clones. As a result, Carpinteria has a pleasing mix of architectural styles that keep it from being bland and boring. I hope that we can welcome this new neighbor to our community.

Don’t let Carp go to pot

For the last six months, I have noticed a skunk-like odor coming into my windows from marijuana growing plants. The odor is not only objectionable, but I also have an allergic reaction to it. (My dog also started coughing if we leave the windows open at night.) The odor becomes intense around 9 p.m. and continues through much of the night.

I have had to purchase an air purifier in my bedroom and home office in order to be comfortable. Carpinteria is known as a small peaceful town where there are flower greenhouses, nurseries and avocado ranches. This has had an uplifting effect on tourists and residents.

Marijuana growing could significantly change the sense of our community to a pot-ridden place, which may attract undesirable elements. This could significantly lower our property values. (Don’t get me wrong, I am not in favor of marijuana use being illegal. I just think it needs to be highly regulated as is alcohol production and consumption.)

While picking up an out-of-town guest from the Santa Barbara airport one evening, when we reached the Padaro Lane area, he said “Where do you live, in Skunksville?”

The odor from marijuana growing lowers the impression of our community.

Think about it. What if the famous California Avocado Festival turned into the Carpinteria Marijuana Festival with a slogan, “Peace, Love and Pot” replacing the usual, “Peace Love and Guacamole”?

What if the Rods & Roses event, becoming Rods & Pot? We would not be attracting the kind of visitors who would make for a lovely family afternoon on Linden Drive!

Please, for the sake of the health and

wellbeing of Carpinterians, pot growing in our community should be eliminated or restricted.

Plaza Playhouse appreciates community support

Attendance built with each showing of Neil Simon’s play “Fools” this past weekend at the Plaza Playhouse Theater.

Thank you, Carpinteria! The show runs through another weekend, so if you want to avoid the crowd during Fiesta week in Santa Barbara, stay home in Carp and come support the theater and its all-volunteer group. “Fools” is a fun and funny show with an excellent cast and director.

Also, a shout out to Jason Rodriguez and The Food Liaison crew for the fundraising effort last week not only for the Plaza Playhouse Theater, but to several other nonprofit groups and charities, as well.

A better way to go

Let’s face reality. We have a dysfunctional political system. The recent healthcare fiasco should convince concerned voters this is true. Democrats: You created the Obamacare disaster. You allowed it to raise havoc with our nation’s healthcare. You’ve done nothing to alleviate the problems you caused with Obamacare.

You condemn those who identify its many flaws and problems and want to repeal it. Republicans: You’re spineless. You voted to repeal Obamacare many times knowing that a President Obama veto rendered your actions meaningless.

American voters then gave you the house, senate and the presidency. After seven years of bloviating and with the power to stand behind your stated convictions, you totally blew it.

Voters on both sides: We need to gather our sanity and demand quality work from those who represent us. Among other things, we must realize that healthcare and health insurance are not the same thing. Democrats (think Nancy Pelosi) tend to equate these two different entities. Do we want a singlepayer (Democrats) or free market (Republican) system? I suggest that those wanting single-payer research how content middle-class Canadians are with the Canada Health Act (CHA) passed in 1984. Pay particular attention to the “wait time” to see a medical specialist. All Canadians have health insurance, but do they have quality health care? Research why wealthy Canadians are happy that the U.S. is “close by.” Californians, in particular, should research why singlepayer died a quick death in Vermont (think Bernie Sanders).

We owe President Obama gratitude.

He showed us what doesn’t work. Democrats and Republicans must exhibit commonsense, break from strict party lines, and work together to produce quality health care for Americans. I’m for the free market approach, but I’ll willingly listen to those who genuinely believe there is better way to go.

“Fools”

Set in the late 1800s, the play “Fools” puts schoolteacher Leon Tolchinsky (Stefan Wayne) in Kulyenchikov, a small Ukrainian village plagued with a 200-year-old curse of stupidity. Leon has just 24 hours to break the curse lest he, too, become an idiot. But there are only two ways to break the curse: Educate a young woman, Sophia, whom he loves (though she has only recently learned how to sit in a chair), or watch her marry the only descendent of the person who originally cast the curse. “Fools” runs Friday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for seniors or students. Weighing your bird frequently will allow for early detection of disease. The rule is that any weight loss of 10 percent or more is a problem worthy of veterinary attention. The other end of the spectrum is, of course, a more common problem. However, within the last 10 years, avian nutritional education has been exceptional.

As a result, bird owners are feeding their birds varied diets containing vegetables, legumes, meat, and pellets far more often than the severely deficient, all-seed diet.

Unfortunately, not much has been written about the exact amounts of food each bird species needs. Thus, the addition of good food has had an additive effect causing many birds to carry dangerous amounts of fat.

Fat on birds is carried externally over the breastbone and pectoral muscle, and internally, around the liver. You can easily feel the extra fat by touching your bird’s chest routinely. The “keel” area (so named due to its boat shape) is normally composed of solid muscle that is slightly convex and peaks at the line of bone that gives it that boat shape. However, if emaciated or underweight, the muscle is difficult to feel and often the bone seems very prominent to the touch.

In contrast, obese birds will have “pillow keel,” which is a collection of fat over the breastbone that feels and often looks like two pillows, one over each side of the chest. Female cockatoos, Amazon parrots, female cockatiels and budgerigars (parakeets) are commonly affected.

African greys and lorikeets rarely carry too much extra weight.

Essentially, the biggest risk to an overweight pet depends on its species.

In dogs, hip and back problems are made worse by excessive weight gain, leading to strain on the heart and liver. As a result, some dogs may even develop diabetes and Cushing’s disease (indicated by high levels of cortisol in the blood). Obese cats are at a high risk for developing diabetes and life-threatening liver diseases. Birds have a very high incidence of arterio-

The great news is the repercussions of obesity are all preventable. First of all, any underlying physiological causes should be identified and addressed by your vet.

Causes include hypothyroidism (low thyroid function, common among some dogs) or an overactive adrenal gland.

Treatment often involves medication combined with dietary changes or restrictions and sometimes an exercise plan.

Some surprise offenders that may be making your pet fat include grains in dry food, pasta in any form, and even those cute harmless baby carrots you feed as a treat. I know—what’s left? How about love? Many people think their pets need treats. But the very definition of the word, “treat” is something experienced infrequently. Yet many well-meaning pet owners feed multiple treats on a daily basis and then wonder why Spot is lumbering around with all that excess weight. Even during training sessions, food rewards are not necessary. You can use love pats or play periods instead.

Of course, the one who suffers the most from these “restrictions” and changes in lifestyle is you! Resisting those begging brown eyes and dejected attitudes (dogs), switching tails and cold contemptuous looks (cats) or loud endless screams and the tossing of bowls and food (you guessed it, birds) can be grueling. Or so you all seem to say.

But in my experience, many pet owners are slim, athletic people who know the value of healthy living. So why wouldn’t you want your pet to have that same quality of life? Of course you do, now that you have the knowledge. The rewards include longevity, quality of life and fewer visits to the vet.

On July 29, GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care hosted an Honoring Our Veterans event with military personnel on hand to recognize the service of resident veterans. Former service-members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, who served in conflicts reaching back to the Second World War, enjoyed a day of reminiscence with fellow soldiers, sailors and marines.

A keynote address was given by Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist, Captain Douglas W. King, current Chief Staff Officer at Naval Base Ventura County.

Crews will continue footing, rebar and form work before pouring concrete for the above-ground, side supports (abutments) and walls for the Via Real and Highway 101 bridges over Carpinteria Creek. Form and false work on the underside (the soffit) of the Via Real bridge continues. Drainage improvements continue.

Carpinteria Creek Bike Path

The Carpinteria Creek bike path will remain closed until late fall 2017 for bridge work at Via Real and Highway 101. There is a free EasyLift shuttle running during the closure between San Roque Mobile Estates and Rancho Granada Mobile Home Park (on Via Real) and Carpinteria Avenue (at Eugenia Ave, Palm Avenue, Albertsons and City Hall) between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. and 2 and 5:30 p.m., every half hour. See on-site shuttle signs for more schedule information.

Highway 101

Vegetation will be removed in preparation for new sound walls on southbound Highway 101 between Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road and northbound behind Nipomo Drive homes.

The Highway 101 southbound offramp at Casitas Pass Road will be closed Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. During night work from Monday to Thursday, the southbound Highway 101 slow lane between Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road will be closed in this area. One Highway 101 southbound lane will remain open during night work.

Installation of roadway sub-grade and base begins in the median east of the Carpinteria Creek bridges.

Drainage improvements are ongoing in the median, shoulder areas, and along Casitas Pass Road near the construction yard.

Upcoming Work: August/September CASITAS PASS ROAD The southbound Highway 101 on-ramp at Casitas Pass will close for up to two weeks for ramp and shoulder improvements.

LINDEN AVENUE The sidewalk at the corner of Linden Avenue and Ogan Road will be closed

for retaining wall work. Pedestrians can use the temporary sidewalk detour on Pacific Village Drive connecting to Linden Avenue.

HIGHWAY 101 Crews will repair damaged concrete panels on Highway 101 northbound and southbound lanes and ramps at night.

The existing panels are degraded due to weather.

North of Linden Avenue, behind Nipomo Drive, there will be sewer realignment work to prepare for the new sound wall.

ABOUT THE HIGHWAY 101: LINDEN AND CASITAS PASS PROJECT The Highway 101: Linden & Casitas Pass project will improve local circulation and freeway access in Carpinteria.

The highway interchanges at Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road will be updated with new bridges and freeway ramps. Via Real will be connected across Carpinteria Creek through a new roundabout up to Linden Avenue. New bridges will be built over Carpinteria Creek on Hwy 101 and Via Real, and four new sound walls will be built to reduce freeway noise in nearby neighborhoods.

Bike and pedestrian improvements will be added along Via Real, connected along Carpinteria Creek, and on the Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road overcrossings.

Construction will occur from fall 2016 through 2020. Highway 101 will have 2 lanes open in each direction and local roads will remain open during daytime construction. There will be nighttime closures as needed. Highway 101 will have nighttime closures to allow for safety barrier placement and to prepare for bridge construction and demolition.

Linden Avenue will be closed over Hwy 101 for approximately 3 weeks in 2018.

New roads, bridges, ramps, and bikeways open in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

This project is the third phase of widening Highway 101 between Santa Barbara and Mussel Shoals. Eight of the 16 miles in this area have already been widened to include three lanes in each direction.

The Highway 101: Linden and Casitas Pass Project is a $60 million construction project funded by state and federal taxes.

This project is a partnership between Caltrans, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, and the City of Carpinteria.

Tale of the whale: The many benefits of volunteering

When her older daughter entered kindergarten, Toni Thompson began volunteering at Canalino School—and eight years later she’s more active than ever.

She is co-president of Parents for Canalino and was a driving force behind last April’s Human Whale project, in which more than 600 students from two schools cooperated to form a living mural.

Thompson became a volunteer to help enhance educational experiences for local children, but she says that along the way, her own life has been enriched immeasurably. She has made close friends, watched ideas blossom into reality and experienced invaluable personal growth.

Here’s how Thompson describes the activities at Canalino, as well as her own role as a volunteer.

Q: What kind of work does Parents for Canalino do?

A: We do a lot of fundraising, which pays for things like field trips, PE teachers, golf and tennis classes, and assemblies. Last year around the holidays, we brought in Celtic Spring, some really neat dancers and fiddlers who were finalists on “America’s Got Talent.” This year we sponsored Daniel Dancer, an artist from Oregon, to coordinate the living whale mural.

We also organize activities such as after-school enrichment programs including band, science and cooking classes. A lot of kids wouldn’t get that enrichment otherwise. Canalino was the first school in the area to bring STAR Nova on board.

(STAR Nova is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that offers a wide array of creative after-school activities for schoolchildren.)

Q: Why did you choose to volunteer at Canalino?

A: I’ve always been a big believer in education. If we’re going to increase the quality of our schools, we have to get involved.

Q: Why do enjoy this work?

A: Seeing how kids enjoy the activities motivates me the most. Also, we have so many amazing volunteers. I’ve made some really good friends, and I do feel we make a difference. If you have an idea, our principal and Parents for Canalino say, “Let’s give it a try.” I look at what the volunteers do, and I feel empowered.

Q: Do you recommend volunteering in local schools?

A: I recommend it because I think it’s so important for our children to see volunteers and to grow up with that as a model. If kids see it, they’ll be open to volunteering themselves.

Q: What have been your most memorable experiences?

A: We’ve had so many interesting ones.

One of the most memorable was the living whale project. I didn’t go in knowing how much work was involved, but once it was in progress, I said, “I’m so glad we did this.”

I learned a lot of life lessons like setting your intentions, being purposeful in what you do and having gratitude. The experience had as much or more meaning for me as for the kids.

The July 30 batch of Sunday swimmers weighed in a little light due to competing events, sharky waters and foggy skies.

Athletes brave waves and wildlife for weekly workout STORY AND PHOTOS BY ALONZO OROZCO Nearly every Sunday morning during the summer at the beach end of Ash Avenue, a group of swimmers gathers to apply sunscreen and stretch into wetsuits in what has become a weekly ritual for 20 years.

“We have all levels (of swimmers), from just beginning to swim in the ocean to elite triathletes and ocean swimmers,” said Vic Anderson, who coordinates the swims between late May and late September. Last weekend, the swimmers trickled down to the beach slowly, beginning around 11 a.m., consuming their last gulps of coffee, orange juice and water on the picnic table at what most call Fourth Beach.

Although Anderson has worked at the Carpinteria Community Pool since it opened in 1989, the weekly ocean swim is not officially on the city’s slate of aquatic activities. As a result, the longtime instructor rents kayaks for himself and sometimes other experienced swimmers to help herd the pack. “We basically support the swimmers out there in case we ever have the need for one of the swimmers to rest on the kayak because they’re tired or (not) able to see where they’re going,” said Anderson. There is no charge to go on the outing, but sometimes participants will chip in a couple bucks for the kayak rentals.

On Sunday, a 1.5-mile course, roped off with buoys, was set up along the shoreline heading east. Alternately, a 2-mile course westward toward Loon Point is set some weeks. Swimmers decide on their own approach—some participate more for the social aspect, and some focus on the exercise. “I really don’t want to have a race environment here; I want to have more of a supportive, workout type of environment,” explained Anderson, who started teaching the sport during his sophomore year at UCSB in 1986.

On certain mornings, the swim crowd reaches 80 participants, but the average count is about 40 swimmers. The turnout on July 30 was a little light, which Anderson attributed to the overcast sky, a recent spike in area shark sightings, choppy seas and numerous triathlons taking place concurrently. He huddled with the group before heading out to assure swimmers that there hadn’t been any signs of sharks the past few days.

Later that afternoon, after finishing their workout, the athletes headed to Summerland Winery for some wine tasting.

“We all support each other, with safety and comfort in the water our highest priority,” said Anderson.

Supported by kayaks, swimmers charge out to sea for a 1.5-mile morning workout.

Boosters to hold Aug. 7 meeting

The Carpinteria High School Booster Club will hold its August meeting on Monday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The group will begin planning its fundraising efforts for the 2017-2018 school year. All Warrior Athletics parents and fans are encouraged to attend and consider how they can be of assistance and/ or join the Booster Club. The club’s annual membership drive will kick off at the end of the month.

Cash prizes offered for final All-Comers Meet

The final Summer All-Comers Meet, scheduled for this Friday, Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Carpinteria High School’s Valley Memorial Stadium, will include cash prizes for the top two finishers in the 5K race. Rabbit, a running apparel company, will sponsor the evening’s 5K and offer $300 and $100 in gift certificates to the male and female winners. Additionally, a $1,500 bonus will be awarded to anyone who makes the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) world standard, which is 13:22.6 for men and 15:22 for women. Prizes will also be awarded to masters and high school runners. The 5K event will start around 8 p.m. The entry fee is $7 for adults and $5 for students, a $2 fee admission fee will be charged for non-participants.

Liam Slade received JG of the week for his perseverance in flags at the Fiesta Comp and for his respect for his instructors. Liam’s great athleticism shows daily as he competes against other agencies and as trains on his home beach.

Kaitlyn Hoidal received JG of the week for her outstanding character and willingness to participate in events such as run relay and taplin—even after having been injured. Kaitlyn has an amazing attitude and is always willing to push herself.

B Group

Isa Caputo was an important member of the first-place run relay team, as well as a competitor in the flags event at last week’s Santa Barbara Fiesta Comp. Isa has consistently performed well during workouts throughout the last six weeks of our program.

Conner Gralewski, unfortunately, wasn’t able to participate much in most of Junior Guards this season due to a surgery. However, that didn’t stop him from making an

incredibly strong comeback, earning a spot on the flags team and becoming a serious competitor in a very short amount of time.

C Group

Whitney meister is one of the most stellar Cs on the squad. She is a strong competitor and always gives her all. She got first in flags at the Fiesta Comp and also came in clutch when a teammate felt too sick to do the paddle leg of the relay. Overall, she’s just awesome.

Asher Smith did really well during last week’s Fiesta Competition, placing in several events. He also consistently works hard throughout the week, bringing his all even when it is not required of him and being an outstanding role models to his fellow junior guards.

Carpinteria Junior Warrior program expands In its second season, the Carpinteria Junior Warriors football program has expanded from 62 players last year to a total of 100 players and 30 cheerleaders this year. the youth football season begins Aug. 26 and home games will be played at Carpinteria High School.

March 7 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team got out to an early lead and beat Villanova 14-1. The Warriors offense, led by David Martinez with three hits, two doubles and five RBI, provided support for the Warriors pitching staff that gave up one unearned run. Tony Vega picked up the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out three and walking none. March 10 - The Carpinteria High School swim team finished strong in a number of races at the Hueneme Relay Invite. In the Boys 4x100 Medley Relay with senior Sal Briceno, freshman Caleb Classen, junior Jordan Perez and freshman Nathan Endow, the Warriors lapped the field and finished first in the event. In the 8x50 Freestyle Relay for the girls, freshman Sadie Mead, sophomore Amy Perez, junior Emily Dutch, senior Leilanie Silva and freshmen Olivia Sheaffer, Sydney Endow, Lexi Persoon, along with sophomore Jessica Cruz also finished in first place. Next up was the same even but for the boys with Briceno, Classen, Perez, senior Josh Kitt, juniors Connor Van Wingerden, Ryan Fly, Michael Leonard and Danny Carrera who also finished first as well. Then came the Girls 4x50 Backstroke Relay with Cruz starting off in the lead, while from there the gap grew as Perez and Silva and Mead finished the race in first also. March 11 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team competed in the Tri-County Small Schools Invitational at Moorpark High School. Daniel Burquez won the long and triple jumps with marks of 20 feet, 11.5 inches and 42 feet, 8.5 inches respectively. Wyatt Stevenson earned medals in the 100 and 200 meters, finishing sixth in the 100 with a personal record time of 11.22 seconds and fourth in in the 200 with a seasonal best of 23.50 seconds.

Gena Castillo finished third in the 100m hurdles with a season best of 17.93 seconds.

The competition meant more to Isaiah Carillo than most.

The C Grouper enjoyed his 10th birthday on Aug. 2.

On July 25 at approximately 1:20 a.m. two deputies made contact with four young men from Oxnard who were sitting in a parked car on Cambridge Lane.

One of the deputies had received a call that night from a resident in the neighborhood who was concerned about people coming and going connected to what the caller believed was drug activity. As one of the deputies conducted a records check on the men—two 18-year-olds, and two 19-year-olds—the reporting deputy spoke to them and learned that they had come up from Oxnard to “meet some girls and just hang out,” according to the deputy’s report. The deputy asked the driver if he could search the vehicle and the man reportedly said, “You can check,” and when the deputy asked if he would find any drugs, alcohol or anything illegal, the man said he would not.

In the back portion of the vehicle, the deputy found two half-full beers, and inside a compartment under the radio, he found a bag containing Xanax and Ecstasy pills. The man was arrested for being in possession of the drugs and for being younger than 21 with alcohol in his vehicle. He was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail. Informed that if he brought drugs into the jail facility he would be charged with a felony, the arrestee admitted to having more Xanax in his sock. The deputy removed the drugs before booking the man without further incident.

They don’t always go to jail

On July 26 at approximately 1 a.m. a deputy was driving southbound on Sterling Avenue when he observed a man and a woman sitting in a parked U-Haul truck with “a deer in the headlights look,” the deputy reported, “as if they were just caught doing something they were not supposed to be doing.” The deputy turned around and pulled up behind the U-Haul and went to speak with the people inside. Noting that both the man’s and the woman’s pupils were slow to constrict in the beam of his flashlight, the deputy suspected that they were under the influence of methamphetamine.

When he told the people the he thought they were on drugs, they explained that they had been smoking large quantities of marijuana, which, the deputy conceded, can have the same effect on people’s eyes.

A records check revealed that the woman had a warrant for her arrest from San Luis Obispo County, but SLO was unwilling to come pick her up. The reporting deputy asked the man to exit the U-Haul so he could determine if the man was safe to drive, and then asked for consent to search the vehicle. Both the man and woman gave their consent and said that deputies would only find marijuana and a pipe for smoking it. However, the deputy discovered a syringe and a scale with “a useable amount” of methamphetamine on it. The man admitted that the items were his, and the deputy cited him for possession and released the man and woman at the scene.

Booked for destruction

On July 25 at approximately 4 p.m. an off-duty deputy notified two on-duty deputies that a 19-year-old woman with a $30,000 felony warrant was walking on Carpinteria Avenue near Casitas Pass Road. The deputies contacted the woman and one of them recognized her from numerous contacts in the past, the reporting deputy noted. Deputies placed the woman in handcuffs and transported her to Santa Barbara County Jail. En route, the woman said she had “‘a piece,’ (meaning pipe)” the deputy wrote. “I decided not to charge her with the possession of drug paraphernalia due to her telling me it was inside her purse,” he noted. “I

Editor’s note: Longtime Carpinterian Lou Panizzon recently discovered a copy of a 1940 Directory of Carpinteria Valley and Summerland online and forwarded it to Coastal View News. Published by the Carpinteria Herald, Coastal View News’ predecessor, the 30-page book includes addresses—no phone numbers—for every family listed. Also included is a “Historical sketch” about Carpinteria Valley that will be reprinted here in sections over the next few weeks. The first several installments published in CVN can be found at coastalview.com.

In 1912, the three school districts were united in one and the construction of a union school building was started soon afterwards and was made ready for the opening of school in 1913, although it was not formally opened until the latter part of October of that year. This magnificent structure housed the pupils of the grammar school until 1933, and of the high school until 1930.

In the spring of 1914, the Carpinteria Union High School was organized. Up to that time, the ninth grade had been taught in the grammar school, and with the new building which had been formally opened in the fall before it was thought advisable to organize a high school district and give the young people of the district three years more of training. Up to that time, the young people whose parents could afford it attended the Santa Barbara high school. It was thought to be of advantage to keep them at home three years longer.

The first plan for the construction of a high school building was to build one unit each year which could be done by adding to the budget the sum of $5,000. In this way it was hoped to build a structure without the floating of a bond issue. After two such units had been constructed, the board of trustees decided to float a bond issue which they did in the latter part of 1929 and the building was formally opened the following year.

Carpinterians have always shown a great pride in their schools which are now rated as the best in the nation. In fact, the local high school is given a high rating among two hundred picked schools of the nation, five of which are in the state.

The real test of a high school comes from its students who enter advanced educational institutions. Carpinteria high school students always made good in the higher schools.

The standing of the grammar school was attested by the pupils who entered high school after finishing its course. They were all outstanding students in the schools of higher learning, so that before the high school was organized, the grammar school status had been established. The high standard set at that time has been faithfully maintained.

Young Fabian, son of Alaric and Orkney Vas, has spent his entire life in remote Witless Bay, Newfoundland.

Looking back on his years, he decides that he has distinguished himself in only two ways: as a modestly successful artist whose illustrations graced the covers of Bird Lore magazine and as the murderer of the local lighthouse keeper, Botho August. The murder was the result of excessive coffee consumption combined with the stress brought on by his parents’ plan of an arranged marriage for him to a cousin he had never met. Fabian does have his own thoughts on this and other matters, including his longtime girlfriend, but he does have difficulty putting those thoughts into coherent form and expressing them out loud. As must happen, the internal turmoil explodes. A simple life, a seaside ideal, but just below the surface inevitably is found gossip, rumor, treachery, infidelity and, maybe, love.

Morris Franklin, an Army Reservist with the 426th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) in Upland, Calif., took part in a training exercise with 303 American and Canadian paratroopers who jumped into Australia after a 16-hour flight on six different C-17 military aircraft. Although he didn’t have a copy of the Coastal View News in his rucksack, the soldier found a boat in Sydney to remind him of home.
