Editorial When I was a kid, Christmas seemed to take forever to come around.

My wise mum used to tell me to “slow down and be patient because the older you get, the faster it will come around,” - and boy, was she right! Another year has flown by, and I’m scratching my head wondering where the time went, and how we got to Edition 9!

Summer is a bumper issue and we have 140 glorious pages to keep you busy reading over the summer holidays. Looking back over the year, I feel thankful for all the wonderful coastal characters we’ve met who have been generous to share their stories with Coast readers. You may notice that our advertisers too have grown along with our stories.

If you’ve ever dreamt of living along this beautiful coastline, turn to page 116 for our coastal building and renovation feature. It should inspire you to create your own dream home.

In this edition we talk to Graeme “Gremmy” Garrett (page 18) about his love of surfing and riding tubes in Indonesia. Heading back onto dry land, we talk to Island stalwart Anne Davies (page 50) about her passion for life and community from her Phillip Island farm, and then chat with a talented artist and community campaigner Camille Monet (page 26) about what drives her sense of justice.

What I like about the festival vibe.

I love the festival vibe! People come to festivals to be festive…so they’re (festivals) great to walk into. My role as a performer is to create fun and that’s ready made at a festival. As soon as you walk on stage, you have the time of your life.

Stalwarts of the Scottish folk and fusion ‘acid croft’ scene, Shooglenifty spend much of the time on tour, honing their skills as one of the best live bands on the international circuit.

An Island resident since the days of no leg ropes, fires on the beach and footy jumpers for wetsuits (or a 5th share in an old diving suit), musician Simon Curphey is a bit of a local legend.

He fronted the legendary Phantom Band in the early 80’s and was invited to play with INXS, Midnight Oil, Matt Finish, Cold Chisel’s Last Stand, Suzi Quattro and many more.

Simon joined Goanna and recorded and toured deep into the heartland of Aboriginal Australia. Touring with Brian Cadd, he says “ it was a rare priviledge to see such fine musicans able to play after so much drink.“ Simon’s music is always connected to the water and reflects the spirit of the bush and the blues of the city. He has completed pre-production on 30 of a drawer full of material and his new album “a fish out of water” is currently looking for a manager. Local agent Phil Hanley (Alex Scott Wonthaggi) recently competed in the World Ironman Championships at Kona, Hawaii. In hot, windy and humid conditions, he placed 12th (in the 50-54 age group) with a time of 10 hours 42 minutes.

The race was contested by 1780 competitors who had qualified at various Ironman events around the world. It consisted of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike leg and a marathon 42km run. The image above shows Phil passing the lava fields on the Queen K. Highway.

Nick Stevens and Jillian Durance recently celebrated the birthday of their 110-year-old home at Moyarra in South Gippsland. As the house remains relatively untouched, each room reads like the page of an historic journal. It shares a colourful yet sometimes tragic past with generations of the original owners, the Rainbow family, and its new owners have taken on the unofficial role of caretakers and guardians of a house they speak of as a member of their family.

Nick:

The prospect of restoring and enhancing a unique old property was very exciting. Looking back, I think I was drawn here by a haphazard mixture of youth, enthusiasm and ignorance!

The first year we were here Jillian had a fairly “ambitious” (that’s code for “ludicrous”) schedule. I remember it was written on the back of an envelope: July: re-stump house. August: renovate kitchen. First week of September: paint house”! If you’ve ever seen that old Cary Grant movie, “Mr Blandings Builds his Dream House” and you were still laughing at the end - I think that’s a good sign that you (as a couple) can survive most renovations.

Sometimes I think that what still needs to be done to this house is somewhat overwhelming. As you fix one thing, something else will fall apart, but this gives you the opportunity to discover skills you never knew you had. My grandfather was a boat-builder and my father is a civil engineer, so I enjoy picking up old tools and remembering old sayings like the indispensable: “Measure twice, cut once.”!

I’m a writer by trade, and write for film, radio and television.

Currently I’m working on “McLeod’s Daughters”, but before that I worked as a journalist on a little independent country newspaper, and as an English teacher in prisons.

I met Jillian when she was performing in one of my plays at Warragul - and she was producing the program. I found her to be totally focused when on the stage, but completely unpredictable off it. It was pretty extraordinary to watch . . . at a distance! Jillian is both a teacher and a writer, and we’ve been especially good for each other’s writing. I always rely on Jillian as the first reader and editor for my work. We act as reliable sounding boards for each other’s ideas.

Back in the ‘90’s I worked as a teacher in the Education Units at Morwell River Prison and at Won Wron (near Yarram). I must have conducted classes for close to 3000 prisoners. It was quite an education for a “cleanskin” like myself. It was pretty straightforward most of the time, but it was certainly a specialist area. Keys, alarms, scams, escapes, fights, lock-downs, crazy people, normal people, the mad, bad and sad. Like most pressure-cooker workplaces, you could develop a bit of a warped sense of humour. Once I had a student doing an off-campus taxidermy course. He was always after me to bring in road-kill. “Just hit something, Nick, come on.” One day - I’m not sure what came over me - I splashed some tomato sauce inside a plastic bag and left it in his cell with a note saying: “Ran over this snake on the way in. Trust it’s helpful.” The bag was empty of course, and so he had to assume that the snake had revived and was somewhere in his cell. Chaos! Anyway, I received as good as I gave.

One night I must have irritated some officers, so they handcuffed me to a verandah post and turned the fire hose on me. Most of the time, of course, I was a consummate professional!

Jillian:

Nick and I met while working on one of his plays. I don’t think I made a very good first impression, because I cut his biography to fit within one column in the programme. I never did it again, and we became great friends.

When we first saw this place, I think we both had a connection with the house, a kind of empathy for it. It needed care and attention.

But it also felt familiar. I had lived in a similar house when I was very young. Both of us came from families very strong in plant nurseries and orcharding. It almost seemed natural to take it on.

I love the variety of things to do in an old house and garden.

Amazing discoveries. Old objects appearing as you dig. Learning how to drive a truck for hay-carting was very exciting. I love recording our progress, but also collecting stories about the house. We don’t work or renovate all the time. We try to remember to sit under the trees occasionally, have some champagne and toast an achievement. Or wander about saying, “We’ve done this “ or “Wow, lots of cherries this year!” We have to remind ourselves to smell the roses.

We could write a book about our house and all the stories that have come to us from people visiting, and local people telling their childhood stories. We love the fact that the 110-year-old apple tree and pear tree are still here. Generations of school children going to the nearby Moyarra school would come up to pick apples from Miss Rainbow’s tree - and still did when we first moved in. Miss Mabel Rainbow received a letter from her neighbour Bill McLean , who was away in France at the Great War. He was looking forward to his return and sitting with her again on the “seat” in the pear tree when he came up to collect the mail. You can still sit in the very same place where they would have sat all those years ago. If only trees and walls could talk. . .

We’ve made some great friends since we’ve moved to the area. It’s been a welcoming and friendly community. It’s close to the beach, not too far to go shopping and close enough to the city for family visits and other activities.

As for the house? There is nothing finer than the coolness of high ceilings on a hot summer’s day, nor the cosy warmth of a roaring fire on a cold, windy, wintry night. And the bright spread of stars or the full moon shining through the old pine trees stencilling their shadows on the garden path. There is much beauty here, a special atmosphere.

fifteenminutesof fame Geoff ‘Gremmy’ Garrett is a local lad whose life revolves around surfing. He started at a very young age and continues to surf daily and follow his passion of shaping and manufacturing surfboards for Islantis. Forever chasing the endless summer, he travels to Indonesia for 2 to 3 months of the year, looking for the perfect wave. Coast magazine talks to Gremmy about his surfing life. . .

How did you get into surfing?

As a kid I was always around the beach. My brother started surfing first, so I just copied him.

Tell us about your first surfing experience.

My first surfing experience was at YCW. I grabbed my brother’s board and out I went. A couple of waves later, I was hooked.

Who do you admire in surfing circles?

I admire anybody who is able to create the time to surf.

I admire the older guys who still love surfing and have devoted a lot of their life to it. Most of the old guys who keep fit through surfing are the happiest people.

Memorable moments in your surfing life?

Every moment in surfing is memorable, whether it’s two foot six and onshore, or six feet perfection.

Best surfing experience?

Best have been in Indonesia. It’s not only the perfect waves and weather, but also the people and their culture which makes it special.

Most gnarly?

Indonesia. The waves there are powerful, and break over a shallow coral reef – and any wave can throw you onto it.

Favorite wave - and why?

My favorite would have to be Grajagan in Indo. The waves there are long and hollow. There’s a jungle backdrop, the sky always is always blue, the wind is offshore and the water is warm. Paradise! And Woolamai . . . it’s paradise too!

Where are you at now, with surfing and life?

I’m in a similar place to where I’ve always been. As long as I have the ability to go surfing and shape boards . . . I will be living my dream. It was then, and it still is now.

What do you love about surfing and how does it make you feel?

The thing I love about surfing is the freedom. Your mind is clear and free of thought when you’re in the ocean. I enjoy the solitude, but getting shacked with just a couple of mates is even better. C

Explore the beauty of Wilson’s Promontory National Park

Wilson’s Promontory is Australia’s southernmost National Park. Located a leisurely 3 hours from Melbourne, it is recognized the world over for its stunning coastal scenery, breathtaking beaches, granite headlands, and unique vegetation and geology. We take a walk with local ranger Ryan Duffy.

The Prom - as it is warmly referred to by locals and visitors alike, is home to many species of native animals, reptiles, birds and plants.

The park offers a myriad of walks for walking enthusiasts, ranging from short strolls, to day trips and extended overnight stays. With over 20 walks to choose from, Coast magazine went straight to the source and asked the experts. Information,

LOO-ERN TRACK Rating: Easy Length: 1km Time: 30 minutes

Loo-Errn track is a great short walk for those still and sunny summer days. The track is easily accessible by a boardwalk that follows the shores of Tidal River’s tannin stained waters – with opportunities along the way to fish from platforms. On calm days Tidal River’s water becomes a mirror, reflecting an image of its Melaleuca lined shores and Mt Oberon.

Ranger Duffy: “My favourite time to walk along the boardwalk is late in the afternoon when the cool shadow cast over Tidal River contrasts with the changing colours of Mt Oberon’s sunlit northern slopes.”

LILLY PILLY LINK TRACK Rating: Easy Length: 1km, one way Time: 20 minutes

This short walk links Tidal River to the Lilly Pilly car park. The track comes to life in spring, with a myriad of wildflowers and spectacular colors. Look out for the native orchids – they are a treat. Heath lands close to Lilly Pilly car park erupt into sprays of white, yellow, pink, purple and red flowers.

Ranger Duffy: “I love walking along the track with camera in hand, taking photos of the delicate array of native bouquets and exploring the diversity and intricate detail of native flowers throughout the park.”

LILLY PILLY GULLY NATURE WALK Rating: Easy Length: 2.6km, one way Time: 1 hour This relaxing one way walk offers shade on warm days, or sheltered walking on windy days. For those wishing to explore further a field, the track extends to a moderate 5.8km circuit.

Whilst famous for its rugged granite coasts, the Prom has a diverse, forested interior. The Lilly Pilly Gully Nature walk offers an opportunity to observe what grows beneath the green backdrop to Tidal River. A section of boardwalk at the end of the nature walk winds beneath a closed rainforest canopy, dissected by the clear waters of Lilly Pilly Creek.

Ranger Duffy:“This is one of my favourite short walks in the Prom, as it travels past vegetation that varies from stunted peppermintscented Eucalypts to towering Blue Gums. A chorus of birdcalls frequently echo through the forest along the length of this walk.

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos and Gang-Gang Cockatoos are commonly heard during warmer months. Their harsh cry drowns out the chatter of many smaller birds calling closer to the forest floor.”

VEREKER OUTLOOK Rating: Moderate Length: 3km one way Time: 1 hour

The Vereker Outlook is perfect walk for warm, still autumn days. This 3km one-way walk initially ascends through Banksia woodland, with Grass-trees growing beneath. As the track climbs> the forest opens, presenting many opportunities to view Corner Inlet and the Promontory’s remote north-eastern wilderness.

Ranger Duffy: ‘When visiting a National Park, I enjoy finding locations that offer opportunities to absorb views in solitude.

Vereker Outlook provides this experience. It is a location where you can sit and watch the shadows of clouds roll across a vast panorama of woodlands, heathlands, mangroves, rugged granite islands and ocean.”

LIGHTHOUSE TRACK Rating: Moderate/Hard Length: 19km one way Time: Allow 2 days (overnight camp/accommodation)>

Wilson’s Promontory Lighthouse is at its spectacular best during windswept winter days, but can also be enjoyed in different seasons. The 19km hike offers spectacular views, with diverse scenery and vegetation, ending at a rugged outpost where comfortable accommodation can be booked. The walk can be broken into a number of days, with camping opportunities along the way.

Ranger Duffy: “Even after visiting the lighthouse on numerous occasions, the first glimpse I get of this rugged outpost always takes my breath away. Perched high on a small headland jutting out into the sometimes windswept seas of Bass Strait, the Lighthouse’s 150 year history is testament to its quality construction. I love seeking refuge within the cottage accommodation on days and nights when Bass Strait’s weather is at its wild best. Hiking 19km through wind and rain is so much easier when there is a warm shower waiting at the other end.” C coast 24

Art can do many things. It can be a thing of beauty and a means of expression.

For local artist Camille Monet, art is a way of life, a means of healing and a tool for reconnecting communities.

Growing up as the daughter of accomplished artist Jason Monet, Camille remembers the comforting sounds of her father carving away at his sculpture in his studio below, and being lulled back to sleep by the steady chipping of his chisel against wood. It was a very formative time for the young artist as she grew up with art being created around her. “There was never a distinction between art and life, art was just a part of our everyday lives.”

Their home at Phillip Island resembles a freestanding sculpture of roughly hewn wood. Originally built by her father as a studio, he later added to it and it became their family home. “I think if you’re lucky enough to grow up in a creative environment it certainly shapes who you are. We were brought up with beautiful artwork surrounding us, so we grew up with an aesthetic sense.”

Camille laughs when she remembers her first artistic success. “I’d been given a little set of paints and I made a small painting of water lilies.” Her mum entered it in the Dandenong Art Awards and it not only won first prize, but someone bought it for $100. She was only ten at the time, and had beaten 18 and 19 year olds in the same competition. “The paper came and did a story and a picture of me sitting by the pond with my easel and paints.

I just thought I was the bee’s knees!” After that, her father let her place little artworks she’d made at his exhibitions.

The family led a simple life and considered themselves to be fortunate that they were fairly self-sufficient on the land. They existed on a natural diet of abalone from the sea, and produce from their garden. “We had cows, chickens and a goat. It was quite a big block, but as there weren’t many houses around then we’d just go and tether the cow and the goat on the land around us. Dad was always drawing pictures of the animals, and that probably led to my first realization that I could do the same thing and be an artist, and it was very exciting,” Camille looks back at her childhood with a sense of wonder, and does not downplay the influence of her father’s artistic sensibilities. “Mum and dad separated when I was 13, and I felt then (and I still feel now) that I haven’t had the opportunity to learn enough from him. Even though I’ve watched him and grown up with him, there’s still all that information that needs to be passed on.”

“Art has been always been a way of life for me, in everything we’ve been taught. Our cooking is an art, we treat our garden as art; everything is art and it’s not separate. I meet talented people – and the amount of talent out on the streets, in our suburban homes, and in front of our televisions is amazing.

The only reason I am an artist is that I have been allowed to develop. I’ve been given the support and recognition that art deserves. I get to meet some people with amazing stories. It’s just incredible, and if they were only given the chance, if only someone said “hey, c’mon, let’s spend some time together, share our stories and be creative” – they could lead an artistic, connected life too.”

“Art isn’t just about funneling my ideas into my sculpture - it’s about everyday life, that creative energy that is part of you. “I think that when you’re an emotional and a sensitive person you build up an angst and energy – and there’s only so much you can hold in your body. You’re almost like a computer that that has stored a huge amount of input, and you’ve got to get it out there. If you can do that through your everyday life, rather than putting pressure on yourself as a artist, thinking that you have to do so much today, or have to finish by then, you can just live through it. If you can be creative in everything you do, whether it is through cooking, play, raising your children or storytelling, then I think it’s a bit healthier.”

From an early age Camille had a connection with people. “My family were friends with everyone from the local garbo to doctors and artists. We always were surrounded by interesting people I feel lucky that I was taught to communicate and get on with everyone.”

She is an individual who possesses a genuine warmth and compassion for humanity. Meeting her at her Phillip Island studio, I find the artist dwarfed by her current work, a towering sculptural mural she is completing as a part of>

“A young friend asked me one day, ‘How do people become homeless?’ I said, ‘Well, imagine this situation . . .

You’re a lawyer in a firm, and this firm is successful because you are working really, really hard. You’ve got three children and a wife; you’ve got a house and a mortgage to pay off. You don’t get to see your family much because you’re working so hard. One day, you get a call from the police telling you that your three children and your wife have been killed. Because you’ve been so busy, and you’re working your @*! off for the firm, you haven’t been able to really connect with your family, or even spend much time with them; you fall into depression and lose your job.’

This story is typical of some of the people I work with on the streets. People who have supposedly done well.

They’ve worked hard and studied hard and operated within the system. They’ve had successful families, and then they find themselves in this situation. Because they are not aware of how to source help in seeking shelter or social security, they’re out on the street. A lovely man I know still lives there today - and I remember him from when I was much younger. I saw him the other day and asked him, ‘What makes you still live on the streets?’ He said, ‘My family is here now, my family is on the street, and we all look out for each other’ – and they do.”

She exhibits a lack of fear that most of us wish we could possess, not only in the enormity of the projects she undertakes, but in the absolute ease with which she relates to people in almost any situation. ”I’ve always been taught never to fear anybody, and I get to meet some of the most wonderful eccentric characters, and some pretty harsh characters too, but fundamentally I know we’re all human.”

The idea of her current project is to tell the stories of the streets of St Kilda. “It’s all about giving the marginalized and homeless a voice,” she says. The City of Port Phillip has sponsored a number of her arts projects as a part of their drug and alcohol strategy, which aims to educate people about these issues. Because of the nature of Camille’s work, she has gained access to people living on the streets and dealing with issues such as substance abuse and domestic violence.

She has also gained their trust. “At the moment I am working with hundreds of people, meeting them on the streets and in rooming houses, talking to them about their stories on a very personal level.

Then I go into schools and talk to kids about homelessness, and we do projects and activities about where people live in the world. I think it is important that we can foster compassion from a young age for people who aren’t as lucky as we are.”

The aim of this project is to have an aesthetic outcome, which will be a huge sculpted wall (11.5m x 4.5m) on the side of the City Power building at Talbot Reserve in St Kilda. Traditionally this is a park where a lot of sex workers are to be found, and where some of the darker history of the city resides: it is a place that is very much ‘St Kilda’. The finished mural will depict an Aboriginal flag, with the middle section as a yellow sun which represents the meeting place. Camille says, “We have been given permission to use the story of Bunjil and the meeting place by Aunty Caroline Briggs, who is the custodian of this Bunurong land.” Bunjil the eagle is nine and a half meters wide and

is flying over St Kilda on his way to the meeting place. At the front of the mural are all the prominent characters Camille has worked closely with. “It has two other main sections representing red earth and black sky, and the stories are interwoven through the rest of the mural.”

All the people involved in this project have created (with some tuition from Camille) a tile to surround the mural that will tell their stories. “The whole culture of St Kilda is changing very rapidly, and there are so many fantastic characters who are rich in stories.

People from the outside looking in travel to St Kilda for the culture, but they complain about what’s happening over there in the park – indigenous and homeless people gathering to meet, drink and be together. This sense of community is something that has been happening for hundreds of years, yet it’s viewed with fear and suspicion. With the community murals, I can get away with putting in political stuff, and even though a lot of it reflects my own opinions, they are opinions that I have heard again and again on the streets. So, I’m going to have some posters on this mural saying “more affordable housing” and “more small festivals” and all that. It’s not my voice, it’s their voice, but in a way I can help facilitate their being heard.”

Although Camille is heavily involved in the artistic creation of this project, making over 100 one-meter-square sculpted tiles, her real energies lie in connecting people, creating awareness and helping better people’s lives. Working from a studio at the community ‘Veg Out’ gardens in St Kilda, Camille says, “I met a lovely little old man who lived in a flat on the Esplanade for the last 25 years. He used to come and visit me almost every day while I was working at the studio – I think he was a little lonely. We got talking about what I was doing, and he said that in all the time he had lived there he had never spoken to anyone in the park, thinking he couldn’t do it, or wouldn’t know what to say. Now he visits the park every day, and has a chat and a laugh. He feels comfortable now, and there’s a link there.

Colin Blay, Tony Rogers and Boyd Maddocks make up the somewhat unlikely trio known as One Tree Hill. Boyd plays harmonica and percussion, Col is guitar and vocals and Tony - bass and vocals. Their catchy style and lyrics like “If you follow your heart, everything will work out in the end. If it all falls apart, we can pick the pieces up again,” make them a feel good band you will want to see again.

“We came together with a mutual love of playing music,” said Boyd.

“We met at a pub in one of those strange quirks of fate and just kept on playing until 3am – that was about four years ago.”

Their self-described ‘kick back acoustic style’ was warmly received when they first performed, nameless, at Kongwak Market one Sunday.

“After we played at Kongwak everyone wanted to know our name,” Colin said. “I thought of One Tree Hill because of the tree on the hill I see every time I drive back from Leongatha. Whenever I see it, it’s like coming home.”

Since that first gig, they have recorded two cds at Col’s Place – each in just one afternoon. They have sold ‘many hundreds’ at gigs and through local outlets. “We don’t use computers, we just make low key cds. I stamp each cd and then I go to the library to photocopy the covers,” said Boyd. “It’s all about keeping it real.”

“We don’t play cover songs. After years of playing in a cover band,

I said ‘that’s it, no more covers’. I take inspiration for my songs from friends around me and life experiences. People put their own spin on things and that’s what I like. Sometimes we see people crying after songs,” said songwriter Colin. “Even I tear up when I’m playing,” chipped in Boyd.

One Tree Hill likes to play intimately to small crowds. “We’ve done weddings, buck’s parties (no strippers or anything!) and wineries,” Boyd said. One memorable gig includes a night at the Orient Hotel in Warragul. “We were playing to an empty room with major ‘doof doof’ music going on in the front bar. All the young crew were walking through and then ended up staying with us,” Boyd recalled.

Kongwak Market is also a good regular. “When we first started (playing at Kongwak), we’d play the same songs twice, now we have enough to do a whole gig,” Boyd proudly stated.

“We try out a lot of new songs at Kongwak,” said Colin. “We love the easy, casual relaxed atmosphere and the forgiving audience.”

What’s next for One Tree Hill? “Our new cd is written and ready to record. Now the other guys just need to learn the songs!” Colin said.

With the interview over, it’s time for the photo shoot. “Have you got a slimming lens on that camera?” they joke. Sorry guys, we don’t, but it doesn’t really seem to matter to a band who is all about keeping it real. C

The Scott 24 hour Australian MTB championship is the largest mountain biking event in the world. A team of 6 local mountain bike riders took on a gruelling 24hr relay race at Mt. Stromlo recently in an aim to smash their previous year’s placing.

Team captain Ash Scott talks to Coast magazine about the tears, trials, tribulations of organising 6 blokes for an endurance event, in confines of a Maui campervan. photos © Sportagraph Denmark

How hard is it to organise a team of six blokes for an endurance event like this?

It’s truly hard to organise six guys who all work full time to meet in one place to train regularly and come together for an event. We started with six riders, but lost our first rider Sam Nathan to pneumonia, and another, Scotty Hocking to an operation. Clem Frie stepped up to the plate to replace Sam, which is an achievement in itself as it was the first time he’d ridden a mountain bike. Then we scored with young Nick Aitkin who is one of the best junior cyclists in South Gippsland at only 17. The guys are great; they all brought love and passion to the race.

Preparation this year?

We were super prepared. Last year was a farce - we couldn’t even set up a tent! This year we decided to hire a Maui campervan and did it in style. We put in a lot of training this year. We placed 9th last year, so we were pretty happy coming 4th – just missing a spot on the podium. A lot of the guys did thousands of km’s preparation. They were cycling fit and way more prepared. Mark “the Cuz” Scott –was pumped, and did a cycling tour from Vancouver to Tijuana prior to the event which was a pretty good effort.

Who made up your team this year?

The local contingent included Mark “The Cuz” Scott, Mark “Ferg Dog” Fergurson, Ronald Purdle, Nick Aitkin, Clem Frie and myself - Ash “The Ashinator” Scott.

How many riders competed in the event this year and where was it held?

Thousands – it’s still one of the biggest 24hr events in the Southern Hemisphere. It was held at Mt Stromlo mountain-bike park out the back of Canberra. It’s a really well made course – you could say it’s the home of mountain bike riding in Canberra. It got burnt out 3 years ago and they’ve since remade the track. The track was a lot more groomed than last year’s track, more user friendly, especially for first time event riders. You can really go as fast or slow as you want – it’s a lot more fun to ride.

Any injuries?

Yeah, “The Cuz” was doing a practice lap earlier in the day and went over

the handlebars. He landed hard – bruising and fracturing some ribs. He did two laps on his ribs, and on really good times. He really set it up for the rest of us. Ronald went down later, flying over his handlebars in the middle of the night, and he could hardly walk after that, so we were down to a four man team.

How did you go after losing two riders?

We really had to thrash out the rest of the laps. For about five hours we were coming third, (and we’re talking the Australian titles), so we were looking down the barrel of a podium finish - but unfortunately we just didn’t get across the line in time. We missed 3rd place by about nine minutes, which isn’t too shabby over 24hrs of racing – so it was still pretty awesome!

Any painful moments?

Yeah. Even with a six man team it’s hard to get a break, but when we went down to a 4 man team, it was really hard. You average about 45 minutes per lap and over 24 hours I got about an hour and a half’s sleep.

Some guys do the 24 hours solo, racing the whole time on no sleep. They are pretty crazy, but you’ve got to admire them because its pretty tough going. The fastest lap this year was by this Tasmanian rider Sid Taberlay.

He did one in 31.38 minutes. The winner Andrew Bell did the event solo, finishing 29 laps in 24 hours and 33 minutes.

Funny moments?

We all give each other a bit of grief (only in fun of course!) When “Cuz” did his ribs he was groaning in the top bunk of the camper and I asked him if he’d like some pain killers. I started doing this little house on the prarie thing, like “I’ll go and pump some water from the well and ladle some water from the pail –spoooon it intah ya with some painkillers.” He was laughing so hard, and everytime he laughed he almost cried as it hurt so much. In the morning I heard this voice above me “hey paaaa, are ya there paa? All the boys were cacking themselves.

Will you be competing next year?

Sure will. I’ve been doing endurance racing for 6 years, and have done this event two years running. We were really happy with our result this year, but we’re hungry for the podium next year. C coast 37

From humble beginnings in a cowshed at Mt. Misery, community radio station 3mfm has gone from strength to strength and is attracting an audience from far afield.

“I get paid to talk…what can be better that?” says a bubbly and talkative Kate Lindsay, who is the Production Manager at South Gippsland’s 3mfm radio station.

The 25-year-old mother of two has been with the local communitybased station for nearly two years, and says that those who know her will read the quote with much amusement.

Kate, whose dream was to write sporting articles for a large newspaper, now finds herself working in community radio in an area where she grew up, and she says there is nothing she would rather be doing. coast 38

“It’s hard to imagine that 3mfm actually started out in a disused cowshed at Mt. Misery (near Outtrim), which apparently was beautiful in the summer but aptly named in the winter. I believe many presenters had to dodge the cows as they wound their way up the hills, and often their cars became bogged in the parking area.”

While there have been many changes in the physical surroundings since the station moved to Inverloch, it seems as though little has changed in respect to the enthusiasm of the staff, with many presenters still travelling long distances and being prepared to host programs late at night. Kate says that being involved with passionate people is what makes working at the station such a great experience.

With only three paid staff, the station’s life-blood is its willing and

enthusiastic volunteers. “We broadcast 24/7, which does include some time where we rely on computers, but overall our success comes down to the tremendous input from our members,” says Kate.

3mfm boasts a wide variety of personnel and programs, with presenters’ ages ranging from 14 to 75. Kate explains that the station plays designated music from 6am until 6pm, but in other time-slots it is up to the individual presenters to choose their own material. “We have everything from country music to jazz, blues and roots, classical, Italian and other specialised themes. The variety is what makes it special, as well as the personality and flair that each individual brings to his or her timeslot.”

Kate explains that the station is currently focused on becoming more heavily involved in the events of the local community and developing a more updated music selection. “For many years we have been considered as the older person’s radio station. We greatly value our many loyal listeners in the older age bracket, but we would also like to see younger people keen on tuning in. Our potential is tremendous, and our aim is to be the most listened-to station throughout South Gippsland and the Bass Coast.”

It is a far cry from his former life in banking and finance. “I didn’t realise it at the time, but when I went to Uni to study for my degree I used to skip classes all the time to read photography and design books in the library.” He worked (unhappily) for many years in a merchant bank, while his wife Maria, who had been a photographer for many years, would come home and tell him about all the exciting people she had met and photographed, like Nelson Mandela. “That’s when the penny dropped and I thought, ‘what the hell am I doing with my life?”

“My lovely, supportive wife,” he laughs (and asks if it sounds like he’s grovelling), said “why don’t you go back to school? I’ll keep the money coming in, cook all the meals, do the dishes and the gardening, keep the house clean, mow the lawns and take out the rubbish . . . so you can focus on photography’.” She did . . . and so did he. He admits that he ‘worked like a lunatic’ for a year. “I lived and breathed photography every waking moment and learnt as much as I could. I absolutely loved and appreciated every moment of it. It gave me a new lease on life and made me feel I could finally do something worthwhile with my life.”

He says his work photographing Aboriginal people alongside his wife Maria, to promote reconciliation has been the highlight of his career. The couple had worked with Aboriginal people on a cattle station in the Central Desert region, and the

personal connections they formed encouraged them to join a reconciliation group on their return to Melbourne. “We spent three months between three desert communities, Mutiljulu, Kaltukatjara, and Walungurru, living with and photographing the people.” Warren and Maria’s work culminated in an exhibition at the Melbourne Festival which aimed to educate people about aboriginal issues. “We want to go back and spend some more time in the communities. We’d like to have a touring exhibition and a book that can further the cause of Aboriginal reconciliation and understanding.”

It is his landscape work, however, for which he is most renowned. “I love landscape photography as it gets me out there looking at the great outdoors at the best possible time of day. You don’t often have the opportunity to sit and look at the landscape and appreciate its beauty – to be a part of it, feel it and smell it.

It gives me an excuse to sit out in nature and just look and feel. It gives me a feeling of earth, to sit amongst it.”

So what is in store for this passionate photographer? “I’d love to do more landscape work, to be artistic and help promote environmental issues. Being a photographer is a real privilege - being able to be creative and spend your life photographing things that you are passionate about and getting to meet great people. I feel I’m really lucky!” C

Daughter of Williams the Shoeman and guardian of Phillip Island’s culture and environment , Anne Davie OAM speaks candidly about her life of community service and continued inspiration.

“Isn’t the rain wonderful?” exclaims Anne Davie as she opens the door to welcome me inside her home. For someone who has achieved so much and continues to be a powerhouse of energy, Anne is a calm and serene soul who is definitely happy where she is. Years of campaigning for justice for human rights, women’s rights, arts and the environment have not jaded this passionate crusader.

Speaking in a lilting and gentle tone, I struggle to keep up with the poetic language and empowering comments as we settle down for a chat with rolling green paddocks outside the window.

When asked are there any causes or passions she may not yet have shared with the world, she replies, “No, I have put my hand up or I’m in there already.” Not surprising for someone who wears their heart on their sleeve. “My great passion is social justice, and I have a great belief in the power of people. People coming together about issues gives me enormous inspiration.”

“It came from being a child of the war. I always wanted to believe that in my lifetime people could be peaceful and not so harsh. At the end of the (second world) war, our family would go to the pictures every Friday night, it was a special treat. Footage was shown of Belsin and Auschwitz, and my brother and I were sent out with rest of the kids. I crept up the stairs and saw the film and even now when I think of it I get quite distressed,” recalls Anne.

“Australia’s great shame is our treatment of refugees, the people who are escaping from intolerable situations of depravation and injustice and come to Australia for refuge and, sadly in our hearts, there is a core of people who believe it is our right, and international obligation to turn them away.”

Anne belongs to the Phillip Island branch of Rural Australians for

Refugees. “Support for refugees has been very strong in rural Australia, there has been a great outpouring. We assist the Asylum support Centre for west Melbourne. We have a monthly voluntary donation system where people give and collect food and have various events, film nights etc.”

Citing one of her heroes as Germaine Greer, Anne spent the 1960’s and 70’s fighting for womens’ rights in a conventional rural setting.

“In 1975, in the time of the Whitlam Government, I took a position as Community Development Officer with the Phillip Island Shire. Life was much more difficult then. A councillor at the time said ‘women should be staying in the kitchen and they shouldn’t pursue education’.”

“We hear of generations X and Y and baby boomers, well we (women) were described as the silent generation. We got to our 30’s and thought ‘this isn’t the life we wanted.’ There was an alternative and we had to pursue it slowly.”

Another passion is the environment which inspired Anne to enter local politics. “When Graeme Burgan, Phil Wright and I stood for Council in 1989, we were elected and the headline on the local paper was ‘Phillip Island Turns Green!”

“Landcare brought women around the table talking about farm matters and management of the land – this was really enhancing for relationships in farming families, the women looking after the land.”

Anne has also played a major role in the arts on Phillip Island. “I became involved in the arts as it is an expression of the beauty and joy of the place. People today say you must regret new people coming and changing the sleepy community, but their ideas and energy have opened up the whole community with increased passion. Artistic life on Phillip Island is growing, and there are more and more talented>

artists. I would just love to see a regional gallery, one of a very high standard, we are ready for it now. I believe there is strong connection between creativity and the island.’

Keeping her finger on the pulse of the community, she describes some of the current hot issues. “One of these is the desalination plant; it has just been dropped on us, without any prior warning to any sensitivity about our coastline. The response to it has been incredible and it is still gaining momentum, right across the Shire and across all groups of people. The culmination of it has been the standing on the beach. When I saw all the young people and their children - and the helicopter flew over, I had tears in my eyes. I get a buzz about people coming together, standing up and expressing themselves about things they believe in and this does get harder in this more materialistic world.”

“Also, in the last five years the amount of development (on Phillip Island) has increased and has been the cause of a lot of concern, I’d like to think we can keep our townships within the boundaries to safeguard and conserve our rural landscapes and pristine south coast.”

When not campaigning for greater causes, Anne is creating her own sustainable world on the family farm of 50 years, ‘Bimbadeen’.

She and husband Bob spend time planting trees and have put in an environmental management system to become a sustainable farm.

This includes looking after the natural environment, sustaining the

bio-diversity through fencing of remnant vegetation and managing animal health. They are officially ‘ISO14001 compliant’ and produce their own range of Enviromeat.

It’s hard to believe that Anne qualifies to be on the Ministerial Advisory Council of Senior Victorians – not due to lack of qualifications, but to her youthful presence. In this role, Anne advises the Minister for Aging on issues that affect the life of seniors in Victoria. “Health and transport are clearly issues on Phillip Island and we as a generation have the ability to show that aging is a positive experience. Volunteering is one way to keep young and keep contributing in a positive way.”

Anne cites husband Bob and family as her ongoing strength. “Bob has been a wonderful partner and support. It has not always been easy for him when I was outspoken on sensitive issues.”

Of the future, Anne says that she will “continue to be passionate about issues and hope I can contribute in a positive way”. There’s no doubt about that. “Life’s good,” sums up Anne as she quotes her favourite quotation from Shakespeare’s Hamlet:

enae is on a mission: she wants to help people rediscover their creativity and she is determined to succeed. “I believe your imagination and creativity are your greatest gifts and I’m passionate about giving people a chance to tap into them,’” she says.

Welcoming me into the vibrantly-coloured, light-filled rooms of her Leongatha studio, Renae talks enthusiastically about her art classes, which are designed to encourage people to ‘have a go’ without fear of failure. “People have the opportunity to learn different art techniques in a non-competitive environment. I focus on what ’s inside them and through their artwork they learn in a non-structured way without realising that they are learning.” Over the past five years, children and adults of all ages have developed skills and self-confidence through Renae ’s classes, surprising themselves and their families with what they have achieved.

The studio is clearly a productive environment. Artwork in various stages of completion is displayed on the walls, stacked on shelves or drying on racks. Bookshelves crammed with art books and students’ journals are readily accessible. Recently delivered canvasses and art materials are piled up in one corner.

Renae’s own latest piece of work, a large, colourful mural reflecting the importance of sport and art in our community, is on one of the two huge work tables. She works on this as we talk, musing on why her classes have been such a success. “Coming in and producing artwork may seem a small thing but it can change lives,” she says. “It gives people a chance to use their creativity. They can switch off and fully be themselves.” Renae pauses, then reaches up for several pieces

It’s hard to imagine anyone with more energy and zest for life than Renae Carmody. The artist, businesswoman and mother of three young children radiates enthusiasm, and a positive approach to everything she does. “That’s how I live my life – no regrets about anything, and the self-belief that if you want to do something strongly enough you can achieve it.” of students’ work which she proudly shows me. “I am interested in bringing out what’s inside them and their personality. I am passionate about individualism, about letting people be themselves.”

Renae has certainly carved her own path - one that enabled her to combine her family life with a developing career. A qualified art teacher and travel agent, she held her first exhibition while studying, and parenting a 13-month-old child.

“It was a great start,” she said. “It gave me the confidence to produce work that I could sell. I made up a series of postcards printed with four paintings I had done, and sold them to cafes and other places. Then, when I had sold those, I got another lot printed.”

Renae was a finalist for the inaugural Gippsland Tourism Awards, which led to more jobs and a very successful exhibition in Leongatha.

She continued to produce her own work, drawing inspiration from her local environment and material collected from her own and family members’ travels. “I love depicting lifestyles,” Renae enthuses. “I love the Chinese Jinshan peasant painters because their work is fresh, colourful, and I think I identify with it. When I saw it, it just resonated with my own work!”

Renae also taught in local schools. A teacher approached her and asked if she would consider holding art classes for children after school. She looked around for a suitable building and set up her first studio. Word spread as her classes gained in popularity and met a need. “There are lots of sporting opportunities for children growing up here, but not a lot else,” she said. “Now I get kids who like sport but who also like to express themselves in art.” Senior students started attending her Tuesday night sessions, working on their folios in a

supportive environment, and soon she began classes for adults.

“People realise that they can’t ignore their creativity,’” she shrugs. “I get a lot of women who want some time for themselves.’”

One of her students is 81 years old. He heard about Renae’s classes about 18 months ago and has been coming ever since. “He drives from Berwick every week,” she beams, clearly delighted with his enthusiasm. “He says it is the one place where he can forget everything else, and that it is the best thing he has ever done!’”

With demand increasing, Renae recently moved her studio to central Leongatha and has begun classes in San Remo. She wants to continue to branch out, expanding into creative day and weekend workshops aimed at broadening artistic expression and encouraging personal growth. “I want to make art accessible for people across the region,’” she says. “I am so passionate about helping people tap into their creativity and encouraging kids to use their imagination. It helps them problem-solve and deal with all sorts of situations in life. If they have this positive outlook they can get through anything.’”

Renae also organised a network to encourage local women in their diverse enterprises. Network gatherings are opportunities to meet, share experiences and learn from a range of speakers.

Renae is confident her own story is one that can encourage others.

“I hear people ’s frustration and a lot of that stems from the lack of creativity in their life,” she says. “I don’t paint to please other people.

I don’t expect people to judge others. I give positive feedback and constructive criticism for kids and adults. I want the people who come through the studio to be inspired to follow their dreams. I want them to say ‘If she can do that, I can do that too.” C

At 19, she was at the peak of her running ability, training up to 70 km’s a week and competing in various state and national championships in middle-distance events. After an interval of almost 15 years, and 3 kids later, Caroline Beischer was able to trade her slippers for running spikes and be a 1500 metre track queen one last time.

“As a child of the 60’s,” Caroline admits she was more the bookish type rather than the avid athlete she grew to be. “My brother was always the sporty one in our family.” At 14, Caroline entered the school cross-country competition, and running soon became a life sport. Whilst at university in the late 80’s, Caroline continued competing, running in university and state championships and winning gold for the 1500 m (metric mile). After graduating from uni, Caroline went back to her home town of Hervey Bay, Queensland, but could no longer handle city competitions whilst juggling her business commitments. So the track spikes were hung up in 1990, but not quite for the last time.

In 2002, a good friend encouraged Caroline to enter the World Masters Games being held in Melbourne later that year. “I just couldn’t resist,” she admitted. To prepare for a major competition again, Caroline said she would do “intense but condensed training sessions” around the oval of the local primary school or the 1km track around her house block, training up to 30km a week, instead of the 70km a week she had been clocking up at uni. Having moved to Wonthaggi and now having three boys, she trained whilst the youngest was asleep and the others were watching a little bit of television. “I would run out of the house, down the path, and be back in under 5 minutes. I was training during Playschool!”

Psychological preparation was also required. “The night before the race, I sat in my Melbourne hotel room going through the

same mental preparations as I did in my youth. I even braided my hair the same way and put on my best socks. It’s funny the way you prepare.” Little Benjamin, now one year old, finished his weaning that day!

A 12-year gap since last putting on her spikes didn’t stop Caroline from winning gold in the 1500m at the Masters Games.

“It was such a huge buzz, but I was so nervous!” She remembers running the race the same way as she did aged 19. “Not very strategically,” she giggles. “Running straight to the front, I had a clear enough break, but the girls caught up by the last lap. At the last bend, I could hear them breathing at my shoulder, so I thought, ‘this is it! This is what you’ve been training for!’ It’s at that point that you reach far inside yourself, for another gear change so to speak.”

Speaking to Caroline, it is clear that she is a very humble person.

“I feel honoured that people say I am an inspiration, but there are a lot more people out there who have done much better than I have. I couldn’t have done it without people believing in me.”

At 39, Caroline is now truly retired from racing, but runs three times a week just to keep fit. She feels strongly that “exercise is an important part of the balance of life- for general health and physical well-being.” With 3 boys, she was happy to hang up her running spikes, exchanging them for play with swords, bows and arrows.

Looking for a unique holiday experience on your next break? The Wilson’s Promontory Lightstation walk oers hikers the opportunity to experience world-class scenery along a 19km undulating bush track, ending at the Lightstation precinct, situated on a small peninsula surrounded by the pounding seas of Bass Strait.

The impressive granite tower and head lighthouse keeper’s residence were built in 1859. At 19 meters in height, the lighthouse stands as a beacon to sailors on the fearsome seas below. The four cottages which stand alongside the majestic lighthouse were originally designed to accommodate the lighthouse keepers and their families.

Walkers can experience the atmosphere of the lightstation while staying in comfort in one of the restored cottages. But what will make your stay most memorable is the grandeur of the surrounding coast and landscape. You will wake up to a view that will take your breath away, and watch wallabies and wombats grazing on the homestead grounds.

Part of the appeal of this hike is its remote location. The

lightstation is only accessible by foot, departing from Telegraph Saddle near Tidal River. Hikers are encouraged to think seriously about undertaking this walk, as the return trip is over 38kms in length. If you are not a frequent walker, some training is recommended. Even frequent walkers are encouraged to try a walk of the same length with undulating tracks and steep sections in order to gauge their ability to walk the distance with a backpack.

The last 800 meters will make you laugh or cry (depending on your physical state after 19km), as it is pretty much a vertical ascent.

Visitors are reminded to check in at the Tidal River Visitor Centre before departing, and to start their hike at least six hours prior to sunset to ensure that they arrive before dark. Always check the weather forecast and carry plenty of drinking water. >Departing

Departing from Telegraph Saddle, sections of the walking track before and after the Roaring Meg campsite provide an alternative to walking on the management road, but the surface condition of this track is less even, adding to the difficulty of the walk.

After the elation of arriving at the station, a two-night stay at the lightstation cottages is recommended to allow time to recover from the walk and enjoy the spectacular surrounds of the area. The cottages are beautifully restored and fully equipped with stove/oven, microwave, gas heating, fridge, cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery. Bedrooms in all the cottages have bunk beds, and sleep between two and four people. The kitchen, lounge and dining-room are all communal facilities, and the shared bathrooms have steaming hot showers. The cottages are available for individual and group bookings for one or more nights. While the facilities can be heavily booked in the more temperate months, don’t discount the winter period, as you are likely to witness some amazing weather pass you by from the comfort of your cottage.

Check-in is between the hours of 2pm and 5pm, so make sure you allow plenty of time for your walk in. Guests must carry in their own sleeping bag, towel, food and drinks. If you don’t wish to carry a sleeping bag you can pre-book and pay for a doona at the visitor centre at Tidal River, but you have to bring your own sheets. Pillows and pillowcases are provided as a part of your package.

With a huge variety of habitats including woodlands, warm temperate rainforests, beaches, headlands and rocky mountain peaks to explore, hikers are reminded of the fragility of the area and are asked to employ minimal-impact bushwalking techniques. All native animals and plants are protected, and rangers ask that you do not feed any of the wildlife, as this can lead to animals becoming dependent on humans for food, or even becoming sick or dying. As the old clichĂŠ goes . . . take only pictures, and leave only footprints. C

THE organisation that fixes the broken pipe in your street is the same one helping save remnant bushland for your grandkids. Tree-planting, pulling weeds, even preserving frog habitats … it’s all part of the work undertaken by Landcare volunteers supported

Projects such as rabbit-baiting, restoring swampland, re-vegetating riverbanks and restoring landscapes are also backed by the regional water corporation, and protecting heathland, fighting salinity and fencing sensitive areas are part of the bigger picture.

Being the smallest water authority in Victoria has benefits for the region – especially for its natural environment. “It means localised care,” said Westernport Water managing director David Mawer. “We see things that might be overlooked in a larger organisation.

But being small requires us to be savvy. It also means we have fewer capital resources, so we have had to build up greater community linkages. Westernport Water’s work on natural resources management and landscape sustainability requires co-operative effort, which explains the close working relationship we have forged with local Landcare groups,” Mr Mawer said.

In the past eight years, the Westernport Water/Landcare relationship, along with Bass Coast Shire Council, Phillip Island Nature Park and International Power Mitsui has led to the planting of 350,000 trees by Landcare volunteers. This financial year alone has seen the planting of more than 2000 trees by volunteers in the wildlife corridor linked to the Cowes Wastewater treatment plant, part of a total of more than 30,000 plants established across the corridor.

Mr Mawer explained. “Managing our precious water resources extends beyond our daily water and gas supply and wastewater treatment activities. Our vision for a sustainable future reaches to water catchments, topography, soil conditions, tree cover and ultimately, to the entire regional eco-system. “Our activities are just part of the bigger scenario. We have never presumed to be working without respect for our natural environment.”

Westernport Water and Phillip Island Landcare have been working in partnership since 1999, with a memorandum of understanding introduced in 2003. Mr Mawer said: “We are pleased to be sharing the same vision as Landcare. We share common ground. We have joint goals of a healthy, sustainable ecology. It makes sense that we should work together and leverage each other’s skills, experience and capabilities.”

Phillip Island Landcare’s work within the Westernport Water catchment involves 280 people – with 130 of them members of the Urban Landcare program. Testament to this partnership is the Phillip Island Wildlife Corridor Project, launched in 1997 to develop a link between two important stands of remnant bushland across 11 farms over a distance of 16 kilometres. A significant proportion of one of the bio-links runs through Westernport Water’s Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant. Since 2000, there have been close to 8000 trees planted at this site, with Landcare members joining Westernport Water board members and staff on the project.

Westernport Water has also had a broader involvement in the development of other areas of the wildlife corridor. Plants for the project were produced from seed collected locally and supplied to commercial nurseries or grown by volunteers and local schools.

Meanwhile, at Tennent Creek, around 12,000 plants indigenous to

the Bass Valley were planted along 4 kilometres of riverside landscape where introduced willows were removed early in 2001. This work was a joint project between the individual property owners, Westernport Water, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Melbourne Water and the Candowie/Lance Creek Catchment Management Group. Mr Mawer said: “Removing willows and revegetating the area will have a positive impact on the quality of the water flowing into Candowie Reservoir, which means benefits for our customers as well as the environment.”

Water recycled from the Cowes Wastewater Plant is being used to restore swampland and support local frog populations and, in the future, there is the possibility of establishing a wetlands at Candowie Reservoir.

Phillip Island Landcare prepared a biodiversity asset register and in 2003/4 this was used to assess all sites owned by Westernport Water.

Several were identified as having significant remnant vegetation cover. A list was recorded for posterity and a management plan enacted to save these precious outposts of rare and threatened flora and fauna.

Westernport Water helps fund the ‘Practically Sustainable’ seminar series including the Urban Landcare Awards for waterwise gardens using indigenous plants. “Between 35-50% of all domestic water use occurs in the garden,” Mr Mawer said. “We are recognising sustainable gardening involving the use of indigenous plants, improving soils and mulching gardens. It is possible to have a garden that can create yearround interest and require little water.”

And, in terms of cold, hard cash, Westernport Water is one of the major backers of local initiatives. Landcare groups from Bass Valley, Phillip Island and the Candowie/Lance Creek Catchment Management Group were the most recent recipients of nearly $50,000 in support from Westernport Water.

How effective are Westernport Water’s links with Landcare? An outsider’s perspective comes from Rob Youl, a forester and Landcare veteran now in charge of a carbon sequestration project called CarbonSMART. “Bass Coast Shire is a genuine epicentre of Landcare action, with 20 prolific years of community environmental initiatives,” he said. “Bass Coast Landcare Network has been very creative with its corporate partnerships. One of the first of these projects was catchment protection activity with Westernport Water, and the relationship is as strong as ever today. Westernport Water encouraged local landowners to form a Landcare group. Since then the authority has maintained a strong program. Indeed, the program worked so well that the group expanded to cover the neighbouring Lance Creek catchment, part of South Gippsland Water’s system. As far as I know, this situation is unique.”

Linkages within Westernport Water’s boundaries and beyond are the hallmark of the corporation’s Landcare support, Mr Mawer said.

“We are more than just providers of water. Our stewardship extends beyond just pipework and pumps,” he said. “Alongside Landcare, we are joint custodians of our environment in this magnificent part of the Victorian coastline and hinterland.” C

Located high on a hillside overlooking the idyllic waters of Westernport Bay, Silverwater Resort at San Remo is raising the bar for visitor accommodation in the Bass Coast region.

Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, you will be taken by the sublime water views as you make your approach along the Phillip Island Tourist Road.

The architecturally designed resort blends seamlessly with the natural surrounds and coastal environment with its use of natural stone and timbers, and indigenous plantings.

The four and a half star resort is the vision of BRICO director Brian Rule.

A family man himself (with seven children), Brian has created Silverwater as a family resort offering an integrated village with a community feel. This is captured beautifully in the careful positioning of all facilities. Children are catered for with basketball, tennis and table tennis, a rumpus room for the smaller kids, and an outdoor play area and sports oval. Adults wanting a little exercise can also utilise the well-equipped gymnasium.

Arriving at the complex we were given a warm reception, and took in the stylish grandeur of the resort as the sun was setting over the bay. The main building features a stylish bar and contemporary restaurant area.

We made our way to our apartment and were impressed by the fresh interior spaces, light-filled rooms and stylish appointments. The rooms are finished in neutral colours and natural woods, which, when balanced with an abundance of white space, gives a distinctly coastal feel.

The apartments are fully self-contained, which makes them perfect for couples or families. A full- size fridge allows you to bring more than enough supplies to self-cater, although we wanted to try the resort restaurant to sample the finest foods and wine of the region. Each apartment features a generous balcony, providing a perfect place to sit with a glass of wine at the end of the day, or contemplate the view.

We enjoyed a cocktail at the bar and then made our way to dinner. Our waitress took us to an intimate corner table, which had a sublime view of the bay. While we made our wine selection, we nibbled on Tuscan tomato and red onion bread with Main Ridge olive oil. The Executive chef, Andrew Kelly, brings a combination of traditional cooking methods from Europe, Asia and New Zealand. For entrée I enjoyed the oven-baked Portobello mushrooms with soft polenta and sage mascarpone, with my partner

choosing the consommé of duck with tortellini of truffled potato and chives. Mains followed with my selection of sesame-crusted salmon with bok choy and honey soy dressing, and my partner’s choice of grain-fed scotch fillet with garlic-infused kipfler potatoes in a port wine jus.

After dinner we sauntered around the resort, checking out the goodies on offer. A couple of rounds of pool in the billiard room and a fine old tokay had us in a jovial mood. Next we had to decide between a swim in the lap pool, a steam in the steam room, or a movie in our room.

The movie won and we settled into the comfort of our apartment. The high-speed internet connection also allowed us to catch up on our emails.

After a refreshing and pleasantly peaceful night’s sleep we woke up to a vista of the sun rising over the Bass Hills, and watched cows munching lazily on the grassy hillside. Breakfast presented a dilemma. Do we eat in on the balcony and take in the sea breeze and sunshine, making use of the provisions we ordered through the resort’s ‘providore’ service, or do we amble back to the restaurant to read the paper and indulge in a fully cooked breakfast? Indulgence won, and we enjoyed a hearty breakfast cooked by the chef.

After breakfast we gave in to temptation and booked an in-room massage. Our masseuse Pamela Matthews pampered us with a soothing relaxation massage using Ayurda natural Ayurvedic products and Heritage Healers Skincare flower essences. Our muscles relaxed and we floated away in bliss.

It’s not all beer and skittles out there in the festival world when you are the director, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had and minds to change. . .

Ian Scobie, Festival Director for WOMADelaide Festival for the past 16 years, has an impressive event background working on the Adelaide Festival, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games to name a few.

His style is edgy and provocative – all with the aim to bring new music, new experiences and new ideas to the world and minds of his festival audience.

“I have been lucky enough to see WOMADelaide grow and develop incredibly. The depth of the event has grown, we have been going for so long now that generations of festival goers have also witnessed its growth,” said Ian. Festivals are not just about music, creating positive change can also be on the line up. “I was thinking the other day about the current electioneering climate and how seven years ago, we started recycling at WOMADelaide,” Ian recalls. “People saw it as unusual. It was before it (recycling) was on the ‘capital P’ political agenda. But people don’t think it is weird now! The concept is more broadly appreciated.”

You could say that Ian’s life is one big festival, having worked in the industry for most of his career. “I like it because you create it, it happens, then you clean the blackboard and start again. They are addictive and the festival environment is very rewarding. There is a sense of nourishment and expectations of openness.”

In fact, WOMADelaide is so good, that each year the team thinks ‘how can we top that?’. “But you just can’t try to replicate it because the very nature of the festival is a coming together of the moment – the weather, the performers, the audience, their response and more.”

With March just around the corner, Ian gives his hot tip to buy tickets early for 2008. With over 400 artists from 17 countries, highlights include Cesária Évora, from Cape Verde, Taraf de Haidouks – from Rumania and

described as ‘the best gypsy band in the world’ and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings from Georgia, USA. In keeping with the WOMAD tradition of supporting Australian indigenous artists, the festival also welcomes the production of ‘MURUNDAK: The Black Arm Band’ which celebrates Indigenous Australia and brings together the country’s finest contemporary and traditional musicians including Archie Roach, Emma Donovan, Kev Carmody, Lou Bennett, Mark Atkins, Paul Kelly, Ruby Hunter and many more.

And on festival opening night, where will Ian be? In the crowd most likely. “I’ll be walking around, checking that the queues are all moving, the lighting is right. Just getting the rhythm of the festival and keeping a sense of how it is for the audience.” And one week after the festival? Not relaxing as you might think, but ‘doing it all again’ at WOMAD, New Zealand.

Ian reveals some exciting plans for the future. “We have a new event set for 2010 called ‘WOMAD Earth Station’,” Ian explains. “We have bought 250 acres of land and the audience will camp on site and performances will be on a different scale to WOMADelaide. There will be workshops around the concept of environmental sustainability such as alternative energy. The audience will also participate in environmental activities such as tree planting.”

That doesn’t sound radical at all Ian, we’re ready. . .

The 2008 Festival will feature a wonderfully entertaining and talented array of musicians from Australia and The USA. Candid, humorous and emotionally powerful, songwriter Loudon Wainwright III will return to Australia for a highly anticipated national tour. Wainwright and his daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche will wow the audiences under the trees at Mossvale. Loudon has a musical heritage that has his family deemed ‘the first American family of folk’. He is father to Martha, Rufus and Lucy Wainwright Roche. Lucy spent a number of years touring with her brother Rufus and has been

described by the New York Times as having a voice “clear as a bell”.

Lucy will be performing solo at the festival but says she is looking forward to spending time on the road with her Dad. Also from America, on their debut Australian tours, will be Ruthie Foster and The Duhks. Ruthie Foster’s songs are a remarkable hybrid of blues, gospel, roots and folk music rich with honest spirituality and emotion. Her simply amazing vocal abilities have critics comparing her to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Whilst The Duhks are at the forefront of a movement dubbed Neo-Traditionalism. With a sound

Coast sales rep Gabriella McRae recently celebrated her fortieth birthday by jumping out of a plane, proving herself unafraid of taking on any challenge.

The thing that struck me as odd, as I tumbled from a very small plane at 10,000 feet, was that there was no sensation of falling at all, other than the initial tumble. There was no feeling of ‘I’M GOING TO DIE!’, but simply an amazing sensation of wind noise, and a fabulous view. I literally felt like I was flying!

Chris, my wonderful tandem master, pulled the drogue (mini chute) that slowed us down to a stable 200 km’s per hour. Then the next chute opened, and suddenly we were floating in blissful silence, feeling free and absorbing the scenery from an incredible height.

I asked Chris when that scary, stomach-churning sensation was going to kick in and he smiled, saying “Let’s do some spirals.” Now that’s my kind of fun. He passed me the reins and we pulled hard to the left - what a feeling! The G force gives you an amazing rush, then you pull to the right and do it all again.

Drifting over the highway to a few happy toots of car horns, we made a gentle landing- we just walked it in, to the applause of relieved family and friends. I think it was far worse for them than for me.

The team at Commando Skydivers in Tooradin were just fantastic! Cool, calm and collected, they certainly made my birthday memorable - as perfect a day as I could have wished for. Eric, our camera man (yep - he jumped first and filmed the whole event) was great, and left me with some wonderful and somewhat funny footage, all set to music.

After some initial training and the luck of the gods (weather-wise), it’s simply UP, UP AND AWAY. Then JERONIMO… Feeling fab at 40 and loving life! C

Bass Coast may just be the event capital of regional Victoria. With over 120 events annually (and growing), rarely a week goes by without an impressive array of entertainment on offer.

International events, such as the Motorcycle Grand Prix held on Phillip Island, attract media attention and huge crowds. But for many, it’s the unique community events that make visiting Bass Coast such a special experience.

Get a taste for crustaceans at the Kilcunda lobster festival, now in its 24th year! Enjoy a day at the track at the Woolamai Picnic Races.

Browse the stalls at the Cowes’ night market, or sample local produce at Churchill Island’s farmers market. Or maybe the action at the 4WD Mud Fest is more your style? There’s guaranteed to be something to appeal to every taste.

Behind the scenes at all events, large and small, is a dedicated team. And working alongside them to help things run as smoothly and safely as possible is Bass Coast Shire Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, and Events Support Officer, Janine Temme.

Frank is a familiar face around Bass Coast, where he has lived and worked all his life. Frank’s local knowledge is complemented by Janine’s experience working with community festivals in Melbourne.

“Working with community groups and seeing them get a great result from their event is one of the most satisfying parts of my job,” said Frank. “These events are part of the fabric of our local communities.

We have something unique here in Bass Coast.”

But not every community group is equipped to deal with the paperwork and administration that goes into running an event. “Even the smallest event has to meet standards of health and safety these days,” said Frank. “Our role is to help groups get up to speed on all

these requirements. Help them learn how to deal with the red tape.

“We also run workshops on traffic and risk management, and how to apply for permits,” Frank remarked. “Then they can focus on getting the maximum benefit from their event.”

Part of Janine’s role is to help get some new events up and running.

“We have Event Management and Event Marketing kits to help people looking to start up an event, or just wanting to improve theirs,” informed Janine. “Already, we’re starting to see our events spread right across the Shire. “A good is example is the extra Carols by Candlelight events happening this year, on top of the main ones in Cowes and Wonthaggi,” Janine enthused. The team is always looking at different ways to support local events. “We try to get different event organisers and groups to work together,” explained Frank. “Often events can complement each other, rather than competing. “Take the Bass Coast Summer Series, which includes the San Remo Channel Challenge, The Cowes Classic and the Cape Paterson Aquathon biathlons,” Frank continued. “Competitors can go in all three and win points towards an overall ‘series’ prize. In recent years, these events have been attracting record numbers.”

What is a podiatrist? If you have been fortunate enough to escape pain in the hips, legs or feet . . . you may be lucky enough not to know. For others that are not so lucky, we know that a podiatrist is a professional who treats disorders of the human foot. Luke Zoanetti from Bass Coast podiatry, located at the 182 Graham St Clinic (Wonthaggi) offers complete care for the feet and lower legs of people of all ages. With an on-site orthotic laboratory, Luke is attracting patients that range from infants to the elderly, to sportspeople and diabetics. Luke provides advice and treatment on children’s ailments including growth problems – sourcing orthotic devices and monitoring the child’s growth. Sportspeople regularly seek advice on training regimes, stretching and footwear.

People with diabetes and poor blood flow are also referred to Luke. Bass Coast podiatry also offers nail surgery including full or partial removal, and general podiatry including the treatment of callouses, corns and nail problems. No referrals are necessary, and Medicare patients referred by a doctor will be bulk billed.

Luke is pleased that the centre can offer a range of complimentary services to the local community. The region has a great new health care asset, thanks to the confidence and foresight of this talented young man.

Podiatrist Jennifer Lewis will be joining Bass Coast Podiatry in December this year, and an additional practice will commence at the Phillip Island Medical Centre at 164 –166 Thompson Ave Cowes in the New Year.

Our feet are the foundation of our life. They take us places, help us dance, play and just be free. Rarely do we give our feet a second thought . . . that is, until we are uncomfortable or have unexpected pain. That’s when we commence to search in earnest for answers to our problems.

Enter, problem solver, Clare Nelson from Extra Depth Footwear - North West. Clare says, “ To find the best solution for you, our first job is to assess your feet. We measure both feet every time you purchase a pair of shoes, as your feet can change between visits. It is quite normal to have two different sized feet so we always fit the largest foot first and make the necessary modifications on the smaller foot to ensure the best fit. Sometimes the better foot health solution is split fittings or cast custom footwear. As shoe lasts and sizes over different brands are not standard, we select shoes to match the shape of your feet. When your shoes make contact with the ground during walking and running, your feet elongate, so we allow room for your longest toe. Shoes need to bend where your feet flex, and we ensure that your heels fit comfortably in the shoe.”

With extensive experience Clare is confident they will be able to fit you with a pair of shoes that will provide comfort and peace of mind.

They can make modifications to shoes to stop heel slippage and fit orthotics or other inserts into extra depth, and extra wide shoes.

Clare is excited to be joining the team at 182 Graham Street in Wonthaggi, with their complimentary services including in house podiatrist and specialist imaging.

Robert Leversha, Stewart Wight and Julie Thwaites from Wonthaggi Specialist Imaging offer ultrasounds, 3D Obstetric, CAT scans, MRI scans and X-Rays to the local community.

The business was established in Cowes several years ago, when they saw a similar need for a service in Wonthaggi. Director Robert Leversha says, “We’re local people and we’ve set up an independent company to service the local community.”

Their aim was to provide imaging services to the region, which normally would require a visit to Melbourne. Radiologists have commenced and shall continue to visit the practice regularly. The director of radiology is Dr Mark Scott who resides locally on a parttime basis. Mark is also director of radiology at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital specialising in head and neck imaging. They accept all referrals from GP’s and specialists, and the services are bulk billed.

They are extending their service to echo cardiography in the New Year, and their tele-radiology service provides a direct link to city-based specialists who can view the images and return a full report to their clinic within two to three hours.

Wonthaggi Specialist Imaging are pleased to be a part of the 182 Graham St Clinic with the modern, spacious building that offers the latest in medical technology.

The centre is located opposite MacDonald’s on Graham Street, offering ample parking to the rear of the premises.

Watson’s on Whitelaw at Meeniyan has a talented new chef in its midst. Having earned his stripes working in such Melbourne establishments as Circa, Chinoux Deux, Fenix and Langton’s (for those in the know), chef Darren Thompson assures us that though his pedigree is in fine dining, his aim is to bring good (unpretentious) food to the people of the region.

Creating his menu from scratch, Darren says, “ I try to create food that isn’t too unfamiliar to people - classic dishes in a sense, but I also like to add recipes for people who wish to try something new, or be a bit adventurous.”

Like art imitating life, you quickly gather that this young chef has a sense of adventure, and he likes to bring this sensibility to his work. After a serious car accident in 2003, his physio encouraged him to get into shape to help his back injury, so he started running and swimming short distances to build up his strength. “15 minutes went to half an hour, and then to an hour, and I just started to progress from there.”

Driving to work one day, he was overtaken by a local triathlon, and a little voice in his head said, ‘that’s what I’m going to do next year.’ “I arrived at work and told everyone that I was going to run a triathlon, and they all laughed!” At the time Darren was 34kg overweight, didn’t eat too well and rarely slept, but less than a year later he was competing in his first triathlon.

This proved to be even more of a challenge than he expected. Training just a few days before the event, Darren was hit by another cyclist who had been struck by a car. “I went straight over the handlebars and crashed onto my rib-cage, while another car ran over my bike . . . and it was ruined.”

Despite fractured ribs, Darren managed to organise a new bike and finish the event, which he describes as “an awesome feeling.”

After his first race Darren was hooked, and blitzed his initial time in his second triathlon. “I love a challenge. It’s all about the work you put into it, the preparation - much like cooking. I love getting up early in the morning, going to the pool, going for a run or cycling. It’s all about the mental preparation of getting ready to race; I love it.”

Looking for his next adventure, Darren decided he would compete in an Ironman challenge. He ran his first ironman in 45degree heat. “When I got off my bike I had to run 21 kilometers– but I didn’t feel hot at the time as I was so used to working in a hot kitchen.”

An ironman’s secret weapon? “I think being in the kitchen is good training for being an ironman. It’s pretty hard going at times – it’s gruelling and it’s hot, and there’s a lot of preparation involved.” C

“Food for the eyes and food for the soul – that’s my philosophy for simply great eating,” says restaurateur and chef Patrick O’Garey. His new venture “Infused Restaurant, Café and Chill Bar” at Cowes is causing quite a stir amongst locals and visiting foodies, delighting their tastebuds with arousing flavours and creative presentation. “It’s about making the flavours work with each other, and not trying to overpower the natural flavours of the food.”

It is easy to see that Patrick has a passion for food, and he attributes this inspiration to his mother. Growing up as the son of two chefs, you could say that he was ‘born’ into the profession. He says, “I love to cook.

There’s the whole creative side, which I find exciting, and then there’s the environment in which you work. The team you work with, the customers, seeing people walk out at the end of the night with smiles on their faces and knowing that you were able to create that – it’s fantastic.”

Patrick is carrying on the tradition of keeping it all in the family.

His wife, fellow restaurateur and front-of-house Kylie McGuinness welcomes diners to their stylish, modern restaurant with warmth and grace. Their friendly staff, while not related, work as a close-knit team to help diners relax and feel at home. Loving what they do, they will go to any length to make their customers happy. Pat says, “where possible, we make everything from the ground up, using fresh herbs and the best ingredients we can get our hands on.” Peeping into the open plan kitchen, I see Pat shucking plump Tasmanian oysters ready to go out to a customer. You can’t get fresher than that!

The modern Australian menu hints at multicultural influences as broad as the range of cultures in this country. Overwhelmed by the choices on offer, we asked the chef to choose, and no sooner had we downed a fine chardonnay than we were presented with a tasting plate featuring a capsicum terrine bursting with the flavours of fetta, mushroom and spinach delicately wrapped in roasted red capsicum, toasted olive bread with E.V. olive oil and a flavoursome olive tapenade.

The mix of colours and textures was a delight to the eyes and the palate.

Next we were treated to a creative selection of freshly shucked Tasmanian oysters. The cold selection included oysters with housecured trout, pickled cucumber and lemon wasabi, oysters natural

with lemon and parsley, oysters with Nham Jim dressing and oysters with lemon, lime and mint-infused oil. Not to be outdone, the hot selection offered an explosion of flavours with spicy Indian Masala oysters, tempura oysters with chilli jam, oysters with parsley and bacon crumbed with lime aioli, and oysters Kilpatrick. The oysters can be ordered individually, but to experience a real taste sensation, I highly recommend the chef’s selection.

For mains Pat selected the puffy battered Tiger Prawns tossed with sticky lime and ginger sauce and accompanied by Asian greens and chilli jam for me, and the duo of game plate for my partner. The prawns were delicate and tender in a tempura style, and were matched beautifully with complimentary flavours. The game plate was plentiful and offered Tasmanian wallaby with slow roasted tomatoes which my partner described as ‘succulent’, along with rabbit and olive pie, and balsamic onion and fetta tart with beetroot chilli mash and jus. At this point we were fully sated, but a tempting view of the dessert menu (and a little encouragement from our lovely waitress) had us ordering the trio of chocolate plate to share. For chocolate lovers, this one is a must, with heavenly mud cake, choc nut wafers and chocolate coffee semifreddo.

Finishing with a short macchiato and an organic peppermint from T2’s soothing tea selection, we were left content and smiling.

With a wine list that Pat tells me, “is constantly evolving into something bigger and better,” don’t forget that you can also drop in for a drink or snack at Infused’s ‘Chill Bar’. It’s just the place to catch up with friends, sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere over a fine wine, beer or cocktail, and great coffee and cake are available all day. With a menu that changes seasonally, and specials offered every day, you’re sure to find something to excite your senses. C

Seafood Skewers 200g fresh rockling fillet (skin off ) 6 fresh scallops 6 king prawns 1 whole fresh baby calamari 2 flat mushrooms 150g bacon finely sliced garlic salt & pepper Warm Fennel and Saffron salad 1 large bulb of Fennel (or two small) 1 brown onion 2 cloves of garlic 1 medium sized carrot 1 pinch saffron threads 100ml extra virgin olive oil 25ml white wine vinegar 100ml white wine salt & pepper

Fennel and saffron salad Cut the onions in half and finely slice. Cut the carrot in half length ways and slice across ways. Finely slice the garlic. Put olive oil in a pot and bring to a medium heat and place the vegetables in the pot, cook for ten minutes. Pour the vinegar and white wine, adding the saffron at the same time and cook for five minutes. Cut the stalks of the fennel and cut them in half and shave finely with a mandeline (veg slicer) . Pour the contents of the pot over the fennel and rest for 10 minutes Skewers Cut the rockling and bacon into six equal pieces. Peel the King prawns and cut the mushrooms into quarters. Assemble with rockling, bacon scallop, mushroom, calamari, prawns, and the same again on a skewer. Place skewers on a tray and season with salt and pepper and finely sliced garlic and olive oil. Cook under a hot grill for 4 minutes on one side and 3 on the other. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve on top of salad. C coast 107

building renovation Thinking about a sea change – or you’ve made one already? What comes next? Maybe it’s time to think about building your dream home or renovating an existing home. When building or renovating, there are many things to consider, such as organising financial support, registered builders, insurance, contracts and safety codes.

Investing time in planning at the beginning of your project can save headaches further down the track.

Plan the exact details and costs of your requirements to give you a realistic budget before you begin. Create a design ideas folder with cuttings, photos and floor plans that you can take to your designer to give them an idea of your personal taste and style. You can extend this folder with your ideas for external and internal colors, fixtures and fittings, carpets, blinds and interior furnishings.

Once you have an idea of the type of building or renovation you wish to create, it is a good idea to have a chat with your local council about your plans, and the rules and regulations of the area. Your local council must approve your project in relation to town planning, health and building requirements.

With planning approval, one of your most important decisions will be choosing a builder. For all building

projects over $5000, you and your builder need to sign a major domestic building contract, and only builders registered with the Building Practitioners’ Board can enter into these contracts. For contracts over $12,000 your builder must take out builder’s warranty insurance which covers any structural defects for six years and non-structural defects for two years.

Don’t forget about interior finishes and trimmings.

Building or renovating can be one of the biggest challenges you may take on in your lifetime. For San Remo local, Pat Wilsmore, the decision to build on her block overlooking the waters at San Remo required careful planning and deliberation.

After 34 years of living in a contemporary family home that overlooked bushland at Briars Hill near Eltham, a visit to Phillip Island got Pat Wilsmore thinking. “I was visiting my sister-in-law in Cowes, and I thought, I like this. I could live here. I could retire here . . . “ Pat sent her sister-in-law on a mission to find a property, and she found a special block on the hill at San Remo. Pat snapped up the block, much to her kids’ horror, “as they were used to having the Sunday roast at my place – but they eventually came around.”

The first challenge for Pat was to decide on the design of the house she would like for the block. Fortunately, she was a bit savvy with directional placement for wind and sun as her late husband was an engineer, and she had helped build their family home.

“Coming from a family of 9 girls, and only 2 boys, we didn’t learn how to do any ‘boyish’ things.’ Well, not until she met her husband.

“I tried to do the design for my house, but I just had no flair. I started fiddling, but I’m no drawer and I just couldn’t get it right.”

When a neighbour recommended Russell Good from Onshore Design, she met him and handed over a list of her requirements. “I wanted a modern-looking house and I could see that Russell had a flair for design, so I told him to do what he liked – just go for it! . . . and he did.”

Russell says, “My design ideas are created as a response to the site and the surrounding environment and incorporate the client’s lifestyle. I like to approach each job with an open mind and challenge the existing stereotypes of suburban housing by using angles, cantilevers and articulation.”

Builder Lindsay Roff-Smith, who she affectionately calls “Rocky”, turned Russell’s design into reality. “They do a lot of work together, and I don’t know if it was because I was old enough to be their mother, but they were excellent. They were so easy to work with, and it was just a fantastic experience all round.” Pat believes the secret to any building or renovation is to be well prepared.

“Don’t start building and then change your mind. You have to be absolutely sure, and happy with the design before you start – and by the time I finished with Russell it was ready to go. I think one of the few advantages of being older is being wiser,” she laughs.

The house angles cleverly, capturing the light and panoramic views of the bay. Designed for a steep sloping block, Pat’s home is spread over three levels. The ground floor has two bedrooms, a bathroom and living room, perfect for when friends or family drop

Upstairs we enter a bright, openplan area overlooking a spectacular view incorporating the kitchen, lounge and dining area, with two bedrooms and ensuite bathroom. “I love everything about this house. I love walking in, I love the openness and I never get sick of the view. I’ve had people say that it’s like living near a train line, that you get used to it and don’t notice it after a while, but that’s not true. I appreciate the view every single time I see it. Every morning when I get up and look out the window, I think I’m just so lucky.”

House aside, Pat simply loves living in the area. “I think people are so much more relaxed in a seaside atmosphere. In the street where I live, the people are all around my age, they are all very friendly and we look out for each other without living in each other’s pockets.” The former legal eagle keeps herself busy with tai-chi, golf lessons, family and volunteer work. “When I finished work, I retired, sold the house and moved here.

The transition was really easy. I think about things for a long time, I weigh up the pros and cons so that when I make the decision I am sure about what I’m doing. If it’s the right decision – great, and if it’s the wrong decision – great, but move on, and don’t look back . . . and this has been a great decision. C

Designs of the future – Russell Good My main concern in our built environment is that many modern designs compromise the life-cycle of building costs.

This causes considerable maintenance costs. Houses used to be designed to last up to 100 years. Many houses built now would be lucky to last 25 years – such is our disposable lifestyle. ECOnomics, will continue to dictate the terms to our responsible authorities and decision makers. ECOlogy and the protection of our natural environment need to have first priority. Decisions need to come from the soul not from the need of making a fast buck, or before you know it there will be nothing left to make money from. Locally, we need our planners to recognise that we are different to Melbourne and our regulations should reflect that.

Bass Coast is not a secret anymore, but it is still a special place - relatively free of commercialization. This needs to be protected and I believe small communities need to regularly voice our concerns and opinions.
