meet the team Patika Reed – Mischief Maker What do you love about summer on the coast? Hangin’ out at mum’s milkbar. It’s the grooviest one in town! What do you enjoy about working for Coast? Are you kidding! I’ve only just been born. Something people don’t know about you? That my name is Patika . . . I’ve been called ‘Peanut’ for over 9 months now. Who you would most like to have dinner with? Well, at this stage . . . Mum! And I’m really looking forward to solid food.
Ryan Thomas – Graphic Designer What do you love about summer on the coast? Being so close to the beach and being able to go there whenever I want to. What do you enjoy about working for Coast? I am doing what I really want to do now (graphic design). I really enjoy what I do and the relaxed nature of it (until you get to print deadline!). Something people don’t know about you? I was nominated for Young Gippslander of the Year once, I think for something to do with cricket – I’ll have to ask my mum on that one! Who you would most like to have dinner with? Adam Sandler would be hilarious or Ricky Gervais – to have a good laugh!
Christina Prochazka – Photographer What do you love about summer on the coast? I come out of hibernation! I love the lifestyle and walking my dogs on the beach. I am a Piscean, so I love living by the sea. What do you enjoy about working for Coast? I love the people – all of them I have met so far are lovely. Something people don’t know about you? Both my parents are Czech. Also, I’ve been hypnotised before. I had to shake my bootie to the audience. I’d like to do it again! Who you would most like to have dinner with? You can’t beat a summer bbq with your family and friends
Taylor Hammond – Advertising What do you love about summer on the coast? Summer is when it really hits me how lucky I am to live on the island. What do you enjoy about working for Coast? I consider it a privilege to work for Coast. Not only is it a great publication, I work with such beautiful, creative and inspirational people. Something people don’t know about you? Hmmmm hard question - I’m too open about everything...I can’t seem to keep anything to myself whether anyone wants to know about it or not. Who you would most like to have dinner with? Ian Wright, he was a travel correspondent for the Lonely Plant Pilot Guides. He would have to be one of the most funny and entertaining people I have ever seen on TV and would have a million hilarious stories to tell.

This feature-length surf movie takes an in-depth look at the lives of three passionate young girls from Phillip Island en route to becoming pro-surfers. It documents the everyday lives of Niki van Dijk, India Payne and Jess Laing. Think penguins, ugg boots, rugged cliffs and steely blue skies as opposed to Aloha, Pearl Harbour and the pink and yellow swell of Hawaiian sunsets. With magic footage and stellar photography this movie will surprise, entertain and inspire a generation of female surfers..

Coast caught up with the ‘vox’ of Grinspoon, Phil Jamieson, to talk life and festivals. What does the coast mean to you? It has always been a big part of my life. When I was young, I was always trying to boogie-board, always getting caught in rips. I grew up on the coast, so I am a ‘coastie!’ What do you love about the festival crowds? They are a crazy lot sometimes! Everyone is there to enjoy themselves, so half my work is done.
See some of the Greatest Moments in History recreated in sand as Sand Sculpting Australia returns to the picturesque Frankston Waterfront (Melway: 100A A9). Moments captured include the 1969 moon landing and cavemen discovering fire. Einstein and Michael Jackson are also featured! Starting Boxing Day, the exhibition opens every day at 10:00am until 26 April. www.visitfrankston.com

the life and times of fatty Artist Sian Adnam’s latest creation is a character she calls ‘Fatty’. “It’s her personality that is larger than life. I sculpt each piece to depict Fatty’s personal and private spaces. She epitomises the many quirky characters I’ve come across and also puts me in touch with my own inner Fatty,” says Sian. Get your own Fatty @ www. artyfarty.com.au
What can festival-goers expect from Grinspoon? Not sure: we are just getting our heads around it at the moment. With six albums we have a lot to choose from, and that causes the most arguments in the band. I dare say I’ll be wearing a shirt, maybe a hat and I’ll do a few stupid dance moves, but I won’t be as extravagant as Beyoncé! What will you be doing at midnight on new year’s? I’ll be dancing to’Walking on a Dream’ by Empire of the Sun with Luke – he’s a good friend and I’m really proud of him. WIN! We have one full festival pass to give away. Send us an email by 18 Dec telling us in 50 words why you love summer on the coast to editorial@coastmagazine.net *Please note, pass for pick up from Coast Office.

The very humble Jason French is one of only a few hundred car modellers in the world. From seeing his first clay car as a child to being part of the team that designed the Audi TT, he has had a colourful career shaping some of the world’s most popular cars with his bare hands…
fifteenminutesoffame How did your career begin? It all started when I saw a full-size car made of clay in a design studio. My father was an engineer and I was with him on school holidays. I went on to do a five-year apprenticeship, got a traineeship then did a show car for Buick. It’s really intense work - seven days a week. Show cars are all about new concepts and technology. They are like a teaser for the public. What does a car modeller actually do? We mould the car shapes by hand using clay. We get a brief from the client and the development of the shape can go on for up to three months. The first clay model is a quarter scale and then we work up to a full (real) size car. About four people would shape the car and between four and eight would put a show car together. There are only about two or three hundred people in the world who do what I do. A lot of us jump from country to country. It’s a very creative process. You have to have a flair. They give you a brief with words like ‘fast and sleek’. Then you go away and try to interpret what they have said. They might say ‘puffier’ – i.e. the panels need to be more rounded. A memorable moment? I worked for Audi in Germany. Audi has been my favourite company to work for - their cars are all about looks, style and class. The design for the TT was drawn on a napkin over lunch in a restaurant in Munich! We were all sitting around and ‘the gods’ were talking about the fact that they wanted to develop a sports car to replace the Audi convertible. The designer drew a picture on a napkin. Everyone went ‘wow’ and it just went from there! They took it back and made a scale model. They sold it to upper management and got the finance for a show car. Audi actually picked up the TT and didn’t drop their convertible model, so now they have two sports cars. Other highlights? I’ve worked for a lot of major companies and have done show cars and production models. I worked on an Audi Le Man car at the concept stage. I have done Buick show cars here in Australia and Lincoln and Aston Martin show cars in England - very James Bond! An English entrepreneur asked to me design an aeroplane seat and
words as told to sally o’neill photo warren reed it’s now in the new Airbus. I worked at the advanced studio for Audi in Ingolstadt in Germany for a couple of years - it was fantastic. I also worked at the satellite studio for Porsche in Germany. The hardest studio to work in was Subaru in Japan (I was one of the first foreigners to work there) and I also worked for Saab – the winters in Sweden are very long. Both of those experiences were culture shocks! Is it competitive? It’s a very small world. There’s a lot of secrecy. Some companies will get you working on a car without talking to you, just to see what you would naturally do, and discover your habits. You bring the trends of the last company you worked at into your work, so they can see what the other companies are doing through you! You can’t ever discuss what you do. It is really a dying art and computers are being used more and more. Do you like driving fast? In Germany you’ve got the autobahns where you can drive as fast as you want. I drove 310kph in a turbo Audi station wagon – a station wagon, would you believe it? I would like to have a try around the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit: that’s something I haven’t done yet. Your favourite car? The new Audi R7 Spyder exhibited at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show. Your favourite car colour? Black with lots of chrome! What do you love about the coast? I’ve been coming to Phillip Island since I could drive. I have always enjoyed surfing. It’s like living a dream when you are overseas: you forget it’s not real. When you come home, the bubble sort of bursts. But I love Phillip Island, I love the beach and there’s no pressure - it’s like home. I want to come and live on Phillip Island full time. I have an exterior/interior makeover business which reflects the latest trends and shows people what their houses can transformed into. I have a genuine passion to make things look exceptional within a budget. You can contact Jason at irenovate@optusnet.com.au C

Wonthaggi couple Carolyn Landon and Larry Hills laugh when friends call them ‘culture vultures’. But it is the arts that cement their life together. Carolyn is the author of ‘Jacksons Track’. Larry composed ‘Starscapes and Visions’ for the 2009 Seachange Festival and has nearly finished a requiem for miners killed as part of Wonthaggi’s centenary celebrations. Carolyn Landon I was born in America and grew up outside of Chicago in a town called Winnetka on the north shore of Lake Michigan. I think I was probably always a writer. I have the temperament of a writer - I’m an observer rather than a joiner, and I’m always thinking of ways to put things into words. I taught literature for many years and ‘Jacksons Track’ was my first book. Larry and I met in St Albans. I came to Australia as a traveller and then was working in the state school system. Larry came as one of the teachers on the flights in the early 1970s where they hired teachers from America and England and flew them here en masse. At St Albans, I was in charge of the musical productions, but knew nothing about music. When I first saw Larry, I thought he was a dag! He was so American! He had all these American clothes, and an American sensibility. I had been the only American around for three years. I was blending in and becoming Australian, and then Larry turned up. My office was in his music room, but I wouldn’t give it up, so the two of us had to cooperate. We were forced together. I was totally not straight (unconservative) and he was totally straight (conservative). He wore suits to school! We started working together and became friends, and then we shocked each other by noticing it was going further. We went to a Christmas party and the people were more stuffy than the western suburbs people. They were dressed up and kind of dancing in a freaky way! I said ‘Let’s get out of here’ and then we were amazed about how we were feeling about each other. We kept our relationship hidden as much as we could. I had already been home to Chicago and my grandmother had given me my dowry because she figured I was as married as I was ever going to be, because we were living together! She put it in my head that we could get married, and I wanted him to be the father of my kids. When we did decide to get married, we didn’t tell anyone at school until a week before the wedding. We had to keep it a secret because we knew the kids would just swamp us - and they did! We couldn’t teach: they just wanted to know about the wedding. Also, all of our friends were in the same workplace: that was our social life. It was a dynamic, creative, wonderful group of people out there in the Western suburbs. We got married in 1974. When we had kids, we wanted to move out to the country. We were placed in Warragul, bought a farm in the Strzleckis and lived there for 25 years. It was our ‘bringing up the boys’ project. We have been a very tight family. We’re migrants, we live in this world and we depend on each other. Our partnership as parents, and our family, are our most important things. It’s the creative and lifestyle thing that brings us together. I don’t think Larry would have gone as far if he hadn’t met me. The arts is where we are: that’s our slant. People call us ‘culture vultures’ because we are forever at the symphony and theatre – we went down to the symphony three times last week! Our boys have been connected with that; the arts are important for them, too. That’s our connection with each other and the world and our kids. There’s a freedom about living here (in Wonthaggi). It’s such a wonderful, welcoming, warm-hearted and creative place! We plan to continue to be creative for the rest of our lives. This house is designed for that. We keep each other going. His work is no more important than mine, and vice versa. I may have received more recognition
because of Jackson’s Track, but Larry is very well known in this area because he was head of the South Gippsland Schools’ Music Program which changed music and music education this area. If I hadn’t met Larry? I think of the guys I knew before him and just say ‘Oh, my god!’. If I could describe Larry in one word, it would be ‘kind’.
Larry Hills I was born in Wichita, Kansas. I lived there until I was 14, then shifted to Louisiana and went to university in Colorado, majoring in music education. I got drafted during the Vietnam War but I didn’t go to Vietnam. After two years in the army, teaching jobs were scarce but they needed teachers in Australia, so I got recruited. I got the job and left the States 12 days later, and suits were all I had to wear! I had no money to buy clothes until they paid me. I was put on a plane full of Yanks, and they didn’t even tell us where we were going until we got on board. I got my papers and they said ‘St Albans’ and I thought it sounded like a nice place! It was a very welcoming school. The kids were very, very talented. It was multi-cultural and many were latchkey kids - we had rehearsals after school till 8 o’clock every night! When I met Lyn, I didn’t know what to think! She had really nice, long, curly hair and she was very attractive. It’s that ‘pull in the guts’ thing. We’ve each got the thing that the other one needs to enhance our creativity. When the kids were grown up, we knew we wanted to move to the coast, but we needed to have space around us. Late one night, after the port ran out, a friend said he had to get up early in the morning to put his block of land up for sale. I said ‘Where is it?’ He told me, and I said ‘We’ll have it’. This area used to be called ‘Pommy Town’ - it was sub-divided for the British miners who bought it as a group. It was all miners’ cottages that were knocked down in the forties. The shire didn’t want the town to develop in this direction, so they consolidated the blocks and sold them. We got the last block, and we feel so lucky. I was the founding coordinator of the South Gippsland Schools’ Music Programme, and held that position for 18 years before retiring in 2003. Now I am the musical director of The Bass Coast Chorale and The South Gippsland Singers. This is my fourth year with the Bass Coast Chorale and my twentieth with the South Gippsland Singers. I was also the Musical Director for three recent Leongatha Lyric Theatre productions: Kiss Me Kate, Jesus Christ Superstar and Crazy For You. During 2008/09, I composed a major work for the Seachange Festival. ‘Starscapes and Visions’ was about George Bass’ voyage down the south coast and around Wilson’s Promontory. For the festival, they wanted to do it with dancing and costumes and make a huge production out of it. So I wrote an orchestral accompaniment for a 100-voice choir. It was a fantastic experience! At the moment, I am working on another piece for the centenary for Wonthaggi. It will be a requiem for the 20-Shaft mine disaster and hopefully I’ll be finished writing it by Christmas and it will be performed in June by the Bass Coast Chorale. If I hadn’t met Lyn, I probably wouldn’t have developed the creativity that I have. (‘He’d be living in a caravan in south-east Kansas,’ jokes Carolyn!) I don’t know if I would have stayed in Australia: I only came out on a one-year contract. If I could describe Carolyn in one word, it would be ‘dynamic’. CC

a life
Neil Luke
I’m in the presence of surfing royalty. Well, it feels that way. Neil Luke, world champion kneeboarder, sits before me to chat about a surfing life that rescued him from the wrong side of the tracks. Neil says it was surfing that saved him. Growing up in a rough suburb, he was destined for trouble. “All of the crew I grew up with ended up dead or in jail, so I was very fortunate – surfing took me from that,” he states. After discovering the waves, he dedicated himself to mastering them with the meagre resources he had. “I became a kneeboarder by accident,” says Neil. “Quite a large section of the front half of my board had broken off in the shore break. It was the only board I had, so I glassed the nose, sealed it up and belly-boarded, then started kneeling and just loved being so close to the waves.” Having seen George Greenough in the 1968 surfing movie “Innermost Limits of Pure Fun”, he was encouraged to pursue kneeboarding. “George was the one who inspired everyone. He made a specially designed kneeboard called a spoon and surfed with a camera strapped to his back. It was a high performance board, so I set about designing and making my own boards.” He was Victoria’s kneeboarding pioneer. Sometimes called ‘Kneel’ as a joke, he easily defends his form of surfing. “It’s the great hidden secret. It’s a unique style, so much fun and not as simple as people think. It may be easy to get to your knees, but you still have to turn the board off its rail and off its fin and perform manoeuvres to get max performance,” he says. In 1973, the state’s first kneeboarding comp was held. “It was the Point Leo 500. I went in and won and made the state team, which gave me the opportunity to travel. I was 17.” He moved to Phillip Island in the early seventies and hung out with guys like John & Rob Craike and pro-shaper, Russell Francis. “Johnny, Rob and I used to make boards together in our backyard. I eventually worked with Russell and he helped me develop as a shaper.” Oh, the heady days of 1970s surfing…“You could rent a farmhouse for ten dollars a week, share it with a couple of mates, eat brown rice and just surf. No one worried like people do today: you just wanted to go surfing. Russell and I lived at the old Smith’s Beach farm and made
boards there. We were the only surfers that lived out there in those days,” he recalls. “One night there was a knock on the door and it was Matt Ryan. He offered us both a job and we started working for him at Island Surfboards. Russell only lasted three months then went to Queensland, but I’ve been there ever since - that was 33 years ago.” “Tom Tyrrell, Matt and I made boards together so we could go surfing when the waves were good. We’d just shut the shop and go. One time we were putting petrol in the car at the old BP and a guy ran across the road and said ‘Are you guys from the surf shop?’ We said ‘Yeah’ and he said ‘Your front door is open’! We’d just leave it open with a sign – ‘Sorry, gone surfing’. I loved those days.” Phillip Island’s oldest surf store, Island, was located in an old marine engineering factory. I can just picture the scene Neil describes: “In the old surf store, there was seagrass matting on the floor, a few sticks of incense burning, and beaded curtains across the door. There were only boards and a couple of pairs of boardshorts for sale – not like it is today.” There were also very few surfers on the island. “The solid reef breaks were quiet because we didn’t wear leg ropes. A guy called Gordon Merchant, who founded Billabong, invented them later. He used a dog collar around his ankle attached to a hole drilled into the board. Those old original designs were pretty rugged, but they opened up the frontier of surfing in rocky places,” Neil explains. Neil’s favourite break is Woolamai “because it’s just fantastic”. He’s also “very fond of” Express and Kitty Miller Bay, and Barry’s Beach (now Berry’s). “Yeah, I love Kitty Miller: it’s like the old poem ‘any wind any tide, you’ll get a barrel, you’ll get a ride’! However, Express is the wave that as a surfer/shaper I have developed my style and boards around. Late drops, deep tubes, roundhouse cutbacks… Other waves – you could snap your fingers - Express will snap your neck. It’s the Wedge-tailed Eagle of waves on the Island,” raves Neil. >

our fragile coast No matter where you stand on the issue of desalination, there’s no doubting the wonder and beauty of the wildlife and environment that surrounds it - and how important it is to protect our fragile coast. We pay tribute to this special place and get an update from Chris Heislers of Watershed Victoria…
Despite a long community campaign to pursue cheaper, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible solutions, construction of the world’s second-largest desalination plant at Williamson’s Beach near Wonthaggi has commenced. Though not stopping the project, Watershed Victoria’s campaign opposing it has had some minor victories like; . ensuring an underground power supply to the factory . an aesthetically reasonable factory design. Now, where to from here for this community environment organisation? The campaign continues with the group’s 1000+ members and supporters maintaining their passion to protect the

region’s social and environmental values, and to continue to raise wider awareness of the effects of this and similar projects on the greater marine environment and on our future climate. Last year 45 individual whales were documented over a brief survey period, and this year’s survey has already surpassed that number. Southern Right Whales have calved and raised young in the area; Humpback Whales have been seen showing spectacular suspected courting behaviour and cooperative group feeding. Killer Whales have been sighted in hunting packs and the spectacle of a massive pod of Dolphins was enjoyed by many onlookers recently.>

is to continue, local people should not be disadvantaged. Housing affordability and availability must be maintained, community services must not be disadvantaged and local workers and organisations should be given priority over those from out of town.
Apart from ongoing monitoring, Watershed is continuing to lobby to reduce the scale of the project and its environmental impacts. Well-organised family events will continue as will the close association with other local, statewide and national environment and social justice organisations. Watershed is determined that if this project

pub was this old hole in the wall, and Pete would show up in this old beaten-up Land Rover convertible, tip a few in (beers) and then there’d be a party back at the Point (Col and Pete’s property).” Mark recalls, “I didn’t know what sculpture was back then. I’d seen a bit of Pete’s work and a bit of Col’s work, and thought – oh yeah – sculpture. They were the guys that introduced me to the idea of art school. I didn’t know anything about the contemporary art world back then – the only people I knew were quite mainstream like Pro Hart. They were really instrumental in my going to art school.” Another fateful meeting with sculptor Kevin Mortenson led the young artist on his way. “I was out painting a picture and this dude with this black flier’s jacket, you know this real fancy thing, with this ridiculous curly moustache (I initially thought he was a pompous so-and-so), pulled up next to me and started asking me about my painting. I was like, ‘I’m just an Egyptian mate!’ Well, that was my introduction to Kevin, and he put the idea of going back to art school as a mature age student into my head.”
So to college he went, and he describes it as an awakening in his life. “I just loved it . . . couldn’t get enough of it, and had an absolute ball. I think because I’d been denied the opportunity of doing that kind of thing earlier, I just absorbed every minute of it. It was a whole new way of being, just doing creative stuff. A revelation, like wow, there are other people in the world like me.” Like being let off the leash, Mark finally felt encouraged and supported. Rubbing shoulders with fellow artists of the ilk of Jock Clutterbuck, Fiona Orr, Anton Hessel, (the late) Ikke Akio Makigawa, John Davis and Gareth Sampson, he finally felt like he had come home. “They were definitely family as far as I was concerned. I could go out and do what came naturally, and was encouraged all the way without having to justify or feel uncomfortable about what I did.” After a year at Monash in Churchill he transferred to the Victorian college of the Arts where he undertook a further 4 years completing and Bachelor of Arts and Post Grad. >

I spent almost six years working exclusively on bust portraits, and then I moved on to more geometric stuff like landscapes.
He started doing metalwork at school, simply because “no-one else could weld.” He describes creating sculpture as an exercise in trying to create a process to capture a mood. He started making simple bust portraits and exploring the creative medium of wood. “I’d see all these heroic busts sitting in the park and it got me thinking about doing a series of anti-hero portraits . . . you know, of people that weren’t so heroic, like the man at the milk bar or the car wash, or a bus conductor. It was taking a heroic form of art and using it to create unheroic characters.” From there he went on to produce a series of side-show characters like the tattooed man and bearded woman, continuing on to feature portraits of his friends. “I spent almost six years working exclusively on bust portraits, and then I moved on to more geometric stuff like landscapes.” We head over to the window to view a slide of a 5-metre tall man. “I liked to play with scale a bit, too,” he smiles. “I was just trying to use the process to express a mood.” Mark works in a variety of mediums, with his wood sculptures being a favourite of gallery curators and collectors. “I’ve never exhibited solo in painting, and sometimes I put a couple of drawings in the group shows, and my own shows, but everyone seems to love the sculptures.” After leaving art school, Mark recalls, “I’d had a few shows and thought I was doing pretty well. I applied for a loan from the bank to buy a factory site in Collingwood to create a studio space for painters and sculptors, but it just wasn’t going to happen. It was a constant battle trying to make a living out of art. You’d never make enough money out of a showing, and in between doing your own work and holding down several part-time jobs, it was just sort of scratching out a living.” >

The artist got tired of the constant cycle of poverty and moved back to Tarwin Lower in 1993. The region seems to attract artists, and as Mark points out, “it used to be pretty cheap to buy into this area, so it’s basically the first place starving artists go to.” At 30, he says, “I didn’t own a thing. I had a beat-up old car, and that was about it. A man has to have a few wells dug by the time he’s 30, and when I met my girl I ended up buying some land and a house and got all that side of stuff started like I thought you should.” Feeling like he was always falling between two worlds, that of a tradie and that of an artist, he says “I mean to the arts, I was a bit of a bloke’s bloke . . . and to the tradies I was all a bit arty. But I persisted. And here (at Tarwin) everybody knows who I am, and I’m very well accepted in the community.” The current co-president of the local footy club, he laughs “It’s my second year running. They probably couldn’t find anyone else, but it’s all been really good.” It’s seems the square peg has finally found a home. “I’ve managed to find a pretty happy medium here. I lost my partner Suzie recently and it’s only really the support of the community that has pulled me through the last couple of years. It’s been really good. Finally, in my mid-forties, I can say that I feel comfortable crossing the two worlds. >

I think when you’re in a very un-artistic place, you can often get a lot out of it (artistically). I have found creativity in the crack of a wall. Little things. Even in the aesthetic of a grimy garage, there are a lot of amazing things to be inspired by.
So what inspires this complex character? “Generally, whatever is happening in my life at the time.” Currently the artist has thrown his energies into getting the local service station up and running. “I think when you’re in a very un-artistic place, you can often get a lot out of it (artistically). I have found creativity in the crack of a wall. Little things. Even in the aesthetic of a grimy garage, there are a lot of amazing things to be inspired by. Depictions of less than beautiful places help with the conversation. “ Mark is itching to create a petrol bowser made out of wood and old bits of junk – calling it, ‘For Your Convenience.’ “I also want to make a full-size wheelie bin complete with coffee cups and socket set. I thought I’d put little messages in
coast 38
the cups like, ‘Your secrets are safe with me’ and ‘You have the right to remain silent.’ I’m sort of plotting and scheming – the next body of work will be based around the service station. Here I am – I’m stuck here – I’m not gonna’ give in – and I’m going to hook into it. It’s a means to a creative end.” C *** Colour Field painting is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid colour spread across or stained into the canvas, creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat picture plane. Less emphasis is placed on gesture, brushstrokes and action and more on overall consistency of form and process.

The story of artist Anita Stepano-Ross is as much about her journey through life as the experiences that have moulded her as a contemporary artist. She talks to Coast about her family history, love, war and peace, and how art has connected the threads in her tapestry of life. >

My parents were White Russians born in 1918. My mum only passed away four years ago and it broke my heart. She was my heroine – independent and strong, but also a very gentle person. She went to university and studied engineering, a subject only men could study in other countries, and went on to work on combine harvesters. When the war came to Russia, Mum was studying in Moscow. Her family lived in a small village just outside Minsk. Mum had to walk from Moscow to White Russia - which was hundreds of miles. She witnessed dead bodies of soldiers and civilians strewn along the way. When she got home, the Russian communist soldiers were there. Mum’s father was Austrian, and even though he had left years ago they thought that her mother was hiding him. Within two hours of arriving, her mother was shot by Stalinist soldiers right in front of her. Her two sisters and brother were also there. The Stalinist soldiers came to my dad’s village and took him and 49 other boys to Siberia to work felling trees near the salt mines. They were just thrown together with criminals and political prisoners. The soldiers were forced to eat horses to get protein, while many prisoners died from malnutrition. Dad said that if it weren’t for the mushrooms and the ginseng he found in the forests, he’d have died. A lot of young people fought the German army in the forests. Mum met Dad whilst fighting with the Russian resistance, ‘the Partisan’. When they were captured, they were given a choice. ‘You either work for us or you

get shot’. They were both 22, just beautiful young kids, and what could they say? Shoot me? As Mum was a student and she knew a couple of languages, they made her work as an interpreter. Dad was an engineer, so he worked on tanks. When the country was eventually freed by the Americans, Stalin gave them a choice. Anyone who worked for the Germans was considered a traitor. They could either work as prisoners for 10 years. . . or leave the country. Mum and Dad were still young, so of course they had to go. It was hard for them to leave a place they loved - even though they hated the politics. Over 3000 of their countrymen left together with horses and wagons – all the way through Poland and on to Germany where the Americans had a camp. That’s where I was born. It took them three months to get to the camp, and my older brother was born in the forests of Poland on the way. We were there for four years, living in tents, and waiting to be relocated. We were free to leave the camp as children, and I remember drawing and playing at kinder. Surprisingly, it was fun for us as children because we didn’t understand what was going on. We would go into the forest and play and eat blueberries; we’d find tanks and artillery – it’s a wonder we weren’t blown up. It was a kids’ wonderland. The great delicacy of the time was the chocolate the American soldiers gave us. My taste for dark chocolate is still linked to that childhood memory. When I was four, they told our family that we had to go to Italy as the first step of the process of resettling us. Everyone boarded the train and by this time, I could speak Russian, Ukrainian, German and Polish.

because that is my passion. Art is my life. I create all the time. Even my house must be aesthetically pleasing to me. There is a kind of order through the whole house. I love light and form – and that comes from sitting on my deck, gazing at the rainbows, the ocean and the cliffs of Kilcunda. I often sit outside, playing my flute, and immersing myself in the wonder of nature. When I moved from South Yarra to Kilcunda, some of my friends thought I was crazy. We used to come down this way and drive all along the coast, but we would always stop here, as for us it was magical. When I drove past the Kilcunda bridge, I cried - it was just so beautiful. I moved here seven years ago and the rest is history. I believe you can apply your mind and your creativity to any style of art, whether it’s illustration, commercial art, or art for art’s sake. I’m not precious about art. I know the style of work I like to show in galleries, and I call that my ‘serious work’ But equally as important to me is sketching at the beach or in the bush for fun, working on portraits or even creating an example of a painting for children in my art classes – it’s all part of the creative process. I can’t simply observe – I must experience, and this creates substance in my work. It also opens up so many avenues in subject matter. I become what I am doing at the time . . . whether it be dance, drama, yoga, music – or just breathing in the essence of the ocean. I am the ballerina, the actor, the musician. I can genuinely incorporate my experience - not only my feelings, my passion, but all my observations - into my art. C

Stormin’ Norman
words katie cincotta photos warren reed & christina prochazka
At 87 this WW2 veteran is a true larrikin THERE’S something quintessentially Australian about Norman Foley. Maybe it’s the glint in those sky blue eyes that you just know have melted hearts in their time; or the way he keeps his betting slip neatly tucked in the top pocket of his shirt, ready for the day’s wager; or the rugged Aussie slang that peppers his conversation with talk of ‘sheilas’, ‘mates’ and ‘grog’ – words that slide across his tongue as easily as the liquid amber on a summer’s day.
When his wife Ethel got Alzheimer’s, they moved to the island to be near Ethel’s brother, who runs a caravan park in Cowes. It’s here that the couple live independently at the ‘Hilton’ in adjoining rooms, which Norm says has saved Ethel from the slow road to despair. “If I hadn’t come here with Ethel they would have put her in high care – the dementia ward – and I didn’t want that ‘cos it’d kill her.”
Or maybe it’s just that Norm’s a bit of rebel – a bloke who’s still smoking after a bout of throat cancer, his voice reduced to a gruff murmur, and an old-timer whose nickname at the Phillip Island RSL is ‘Stormin’ Norman’, after he attempted to crash through the new automatic doors of the old members’ entrance, reversing and ramming with his mobility scooter to get past the hi-tech invention nobody forewarned him about.
Their union was unexpected. Both were approaching 40, and had lost their partners. Ethel’s husband succumbed to cancer, and Norm’s first marriage went sour. He mentions his first wife, ‘a Melbourne model’, with little enthusiasm. For Ethel, though, he’s made sacrifices, including leaving the seaside village of Paynesville, where he had a fishing boat. “Ethel wouldn’t move to Paynesville. She said there were too many mozzies there and I knew too many women.”
That electric scooter was an unwelcome downgrade from a white Mercedes Benz that he had to give up five years ago when his legs got shaky. He’s not impressed about moving to a vehicle with a top speed of 15kph, painted a girlie shade of burgundy with a basket out front. The only way for a proud man to deal with that is to command some respect. “I don’t have a car anymore but I’ve got a gofer,” he winks, nodding to the staff at reception.
Later, he and Ethel were to share another tragedy – the loss of their only children. At 27, Ethel’s daughter died of leukaemia, just two days before her wedding day. Norm lost his son in battle after he joined the Royal Australian Air Force, just like his father and two uncles before him.
The 87-year-old WWII veteran is a larrikin all right. When I meet him at Grossard Court – which gleams more like a 5-star hotel than a nursing home – he’s quick to punch in the security code to let me in (seems he’s finally mastered the great moving glass). ‘Welcome to the Hilton!’ he quips with a grin and a handshake. Norm has followed the coast all his life, living in Darwin, Lennox Head, Paynesville and Black Rock and reaching his final port of call on Phillip Island. Travelling was in his blood, with his miner father pulled from town to town by the earth’s riches. “I was conceived in Western Australia, born in Geelong, started school in Townsville and finished high school in Albury, so work that one out!”

“I was only 17 when war broke out, but on January 18th, 1940 I turned 18 and I was off. My mother was heartbroken because my two brothers had already gone’ but I said, ‘If you don’t let me go, I’ll run away’, so she signed the papers.” But Norm’s dreams of flying were dashed. As an apprentice plumber, he was relegated to work on the ground, building airstrips in Papua New Guinea and East Timor in a construction unit dubbed ‘The Flying Shovels’. “Before the Yanks came into the war, all we had was a Fortune tractor, a Fargo truck, a water-filled roller and an old grader. We had to get the ‘fuzzy wuzzies’ to come down and help us tow them.”>

After five years of service in WWII, Norm returned to Melbourne as a 23-year-old, keen to join the local RSL. “I went to Malvern RSL and rang the bell and this old bloke came out and said, ‘What do you want?’ and I said, ‘I’ve come to join the RSL’ and he said, ‘You’re not bloody old enough, now piss off’.” It was an unsettling homecoming, so he headed to Darwin to work ferrying Aboriginal boys across from Bathurst Island on an Air Force crash boat. “Darwin was a pretty rough old place. Not many white women when I was there, just a few in administration and in the medical field. There, you didn’t buy a dozen beers, you’d buy a wooden case of them, all packed in straw, which we kept cool in kerosene refrigerators.” It was the late 1940s, and Norm knew the founder of world-famous Paspaley Pearls, Nicholas Paspaley senior, who fled Greece in World War1 to try his hand at pearl lugging in Australia. “Paspaley became a multimillionaire, but I knew him as the local butcher and SP bookmaker.” I ask Norm if there was any romance in the hot, humid ‘Territory’? For the first time in our conversation, he’s a little lost for words, like he’s remembering a long-forgotten dream. “I was lucky enough to know one of the sisters at the hospital. We had an association.” But the pull to leave was too strong. “I got out because I could see what was happening to people who stayed too long: they’d finish up as alcoholics.” Back in Melbourne, Norm scored a sales job with Boral, who paid for him to retrain as an acoustic engineer. His job involved the perfecting of a room’s sound, and he continued at Boral until he retired. One of his clients was radio and TV star Greg Evans. “When Greg Evans was on radio at 3MP, he told me he wanted his studio acoustically enhanced to the level where he could hear a pin drop. I did the job for him, and over the radio he said: ‘Norm Foley came down here and helped me out. But it’s acoustically bloody dead in here now. I think I’m in a grave!” Norm’s not one to ponder his own mortality. When I ask about his health, he doesn’t miss the chance for a wisecrack. “When the surgeon
coast 68
lasered my throat cancer off about two years ago, he said, ‘I’m pretty sure I’ve got it all, Norm, but it was covered in Lucky Strikes!’ I keep pretty fit, but I’ve been celibate for about 10 years. That’s nothing, though: priests do that, too. I’ve had a heart valve replaced, and my spine done – if only I could get a new pair of legs, I could chase the sheilas again.” The ladies’ man may have become all priest-like with the ladies, but he’s still up for the rest of life’s pleasures – beer, betting and football. Come 11am, you’ll see him down at the Phillip Island RSL, putting on his daily bet and chugging back a creamy pot of Guinness. ANZAC Day’s the other ritual he holds tight to, having never missed a dawn service since 1948. Unlike some veterans, Norm will happily reminisce about the war – it’s Premiership defeat that really pains him. Witnessing St Kilda’s tragic two-goal loss to Geelong in the 2009 AFL Grand Final, 43 years after he stood on beer cans in the Southern Stand to watch the Saints win the cup by a point, is just too difficult to talk about. In fact, Norm only has one word to say about it and it’s the final one: “Disgusting.” C Read more about our diggers in the book “Keeping the Spirit Alive – The Story of the Phillip Island RSL” and was written/compiled by Mary Bourke. excuse.” At 73 years of age, she has a point. No use asking Faye how many animals have passed through her care. She can’t remember. No use asking her when the animal welfare all began. Ditto.
The vet bills trump the food bills, even with the cut-price deal offered by a kind local vet.
She grew up in country NSW, one of six kids, on a farm that always saw a rag-tag of dogs and cats about the place. As a newly-wed, she and her husband Bob rented a flat in Parkdale. It was there that she started feeding a tortoiseshell stray that she named Tiffany. It was the start of a lifetime’s passion. Later, in 1974, Faye and Bob bought an old dairy farm in Foster North. The 102-acre property was their weekender, initially. Robert was works manager for a Melbourne lift company and Faye the PA for a partner in a city firm
But caring for these animals exacts another – possibly more significant – toll on Faye and her small band of supporters running South Gippsland Animal Aid. It lessens their opinion of their fellow humans. “People are becoming more callous, I think. They say it’s all due to the economic downturn. But we’ve lived through that before. It’s no

of accountants. Then, at forty, she learned to drive and took up work with a firm in Rosebud, closer to the family home in Baxter. The home hosted 13 cats, two goats and a Doberman. The work in Rosebud saw her offering tax advice to several elderly people and, in the course of that work, she found the old folk were often troubled by dumped cats. “One Christmas Eve I was due to have a break, and I heard about a man who had a problem with a cat and some kittens. And I went there and saw that they had cat flu. I had to nurse them all through – and it was my holiday!” Helping rehabilitate pets has now grown to be a full-time
calling for Faye. “It’s probably more of a passion; it takes up every waking hour,” she said. One memorable morning she had to feed 45 cats that were due to be taken to the vet for a bulk desexing. It’s a time-consuming and costly business. Faye used to raise funds with a street stall most Saturdays at Inverloch until new regulations put a stop to that. She used to make money with homemade cooking. But the health regulations stopped that, too. Nowadays her group operates an op shop in Wonthaggi, and more hardy volunteers help her man a stall space they get for free at Kongwak market – often sheltering from wind and rain under a tarp. It’s stuff for stoics,>

If the animals are mostly blameless, humans swing the balance. Faye has stories of habitual dumpers, of outright cruelty, of neglect and irresponsibility.
but Faye’s reason is simple. “We do it because we can’t refuse help to an animal.”
They sometimes give us some of their pound animals to rehouse.”
The group doesn’t run to anything as flash as an animal shelter. Faye and her seven workers simply take the strays into their homes and seek to organise adoptions. “We have a no-kill policy,” she said, “unless they’re dying, or in very rare circumstances where an animal is just too damaged, and could be a risk to other animals or humans.” If the animals are mostly blameless, humans swing the balance. Faye has stories of habitual dumpers, of outright cruelty, of neglect and irresponsibility. “People surrender their pets all the time, mostly for ridiculous reasons – mainly because their personal circumstances have changed: that’s mostly in the case of dogs. For cats, they just abandon them,” she said. “Once we found some kittens in a dumpster at Cowes. Another time, a border collie cross was brought into the pound: she’d been picked up by workers who didn’t know she was pregnant. She gave birth in the pound. The Bass Coast Shire has got some good people on its staff. Very compassionate.
Faye’s network is wide. She recently got a call from the Salvos, who had rehoused a (human) family evicted from their rental house. The eviction had happened so suddenly that the family had not had time to collect their three cats. Faye managed to find two of them, but the family’s circumstances had changed so dramatically that she now finds herself caring for the rescued animals. “Another time, a lady came into the shop begging us to take in a stray cat her husband had been feeding at a building site. It was just skin and bone; its backbone was sticking out and you could see its ribs. It would have starved to death. Faye has been feeding it up with her best highprotein cat food. The premium stuff is for the cats and dogs that have suffered the worst neglect that human beings can dish out. She plans to keep on going “if my health holds up.” Her dearest wish is to be like a friend who, well into her eighties, would not think twice about crawling under a house to catch a stray cat. “That’s how I want to be,” said Faye. When you head into a new town, there’s nowhere better to get the lowdown than the local Visitor Information Centre. The dedicated staff and volunteers provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ of information, and it’s not just for visitors - there’s plenty for locals, too. Every Friday, Neil Everett takes his turn behind the counter at the Visitor Information Centre in Inverloch. He’s kept busy answering questions, providing advice on things to do and see and …well, whatever else comes along. “Many visitors are from outside the area, and I like to direct them to our beautiful scenery and places close by like The Prom and Cape Liptrap,” says Neil. It’s the perfect gig for a guy who wants to keep being involved with people now he’s retired. The most common question he’s asked? “’How do you get to the RACV Resort?’ or: ‘We’re here for a few days: what do we do?’” says Neil. He loves directing visitors to the town’s many attractions, including the drive along the coast road out to Eagle’s Nest – his personal favourite. “There’s always a lot of interest in the Dinosaur Dig over summer, and the Screw Creek Walk and the annual Jazz Festival are up there with the best in Victoria.” Some of his memorable moments include having to change a tyre for a Japanese cyclist, and the time a bike-rider asked him: “Are there any hills between here and Sydney?!”. He also enjoys the varied crowd that Phillip Island’s MotoGP brings to the area.
As well as providing visitors with unbiased information on everything from dining options through to places to stay, Neil assists residents who take advantage of the services the centre has to offer. “We have a lot of locals coming in, asking for VLine bus timetables and tide times or a map of the town,” says Neil. “Our theatre programs and lists of upcoming local events are always popular. Locals are always welcome.” He is enjoying the new Information Centre building at Inverloch, which is “very pleasant to work in and has a nice outlook.” When he’s not working at the Information Centre, Neil keeps busy serving the community through the local Lions Club (he is a life member) and each Wednesday, he drives the community bus for elderly residents, taking them to Wonthaggi for banking and medical appointments. “That keeps me out of trouble,” he jokes. Neil is keen to emphasise that he is only one of many volunteers that staff the Bass Coast Information Centres located in Inverloch, Wonthaggi, and on Phillip Island at Newhaven and Cowes. “We have a great team. We’re all volunteers, are visitor-orientated and have a really cheery outlook. There’s a good mix from all walks of life and we are always looking for new volunteers to join the team. We make people feel welcome and we promote our area. We help to bring the tourists into Bass Coast and to keep them here.” C

surf rescue
words sally o’neill photos nick leman
This will be a nostalgic summer for the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club. It marks their last patrols from the shipping containers that have doubled as a clubhouse for the past 11 years. When the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club officially began in November 1998, it was the first new life saving club to be formed in Victoria for 42 years. Resident Alan Bolton has been involved with the club since “day one”. After “living out of three shipping containers”, he is looking forward to the luxury of a brand-new clubhouse. It all started with a community meeting in February 1998 when a group of interested people got together to talk about establishing a surf life saving club in Inverloch. “Glen Hibberd and I worked together to get it going,” says Alan. “Glen was visiting Invy, and some of his friends got into difficulty at the beach. After that, he said ‘Let’s get a club started’,” says Alan. “We had our first patrol in November 1998 and have gone from nothing to over 400 members and 120 qualified lifesavers today.” The club can now secure its plans to build a new clubhouse using a $500,000 grant received through the State Government’s Community Facility Funding Program. When the grant was announced, The Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, James Merlino, visited Inverloch and said that “the project was the most worthy application he had seen”. “I’ll cry the day it gets built,” says Alan. “It’s been a long-term aim of ours and I can’t wait to turn the first sod.” The club hopes to be moving into the new facility in November 2010. The environmentally-sustainable building will house a patrol room, training room, kiosk, accommodation and workshop. The new facility will also allow the club to increase
activities such as the Nippers program and provide a venue for other sporting and community groups, emergency service organisations and educational institutions. The total project will cost around $1.3 million and the Club, Bass Coast Shire Council and Inverloch and Districts Community Bank have contributed significant funds. Over $200,000 has also been raised by local community organisations and supporters. While the new clubhouse has taken a lot of focus for the club, they never forget their real purpose - saving lives. “Inverloch is a dangerous surf beach, people often get into difficulty. There are a lot of rips and people get dumped and we bring them back in. We help with lots of incidents; we did a major rescue last year and had to call the Westpac helicopter. That was major.” And Alan’s advice for water safety this summer? “Swim between the flags and be aware of the currents. If you do get caught, don’t fight it: stay calm and you’ll be dragged back in. Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap.” Inverloch Surf Beach is patrolled from the last weekend of November to the end of Easter. The club still needs to raise money to cover the final costs of the new clubhouse. For information about how to donate or join the club, contact the club President Philippe du Plessis 0429 002 219 or visit www.islsc.org.au C

art & soul festival Picturesque Churchill Island will come alive again with soulful grooves at the annual ART & SOUL festival on Sunday January 10, 2010. Relax on the lawn overlooking the sparkling waters of Westernport Bay, and enjoy the dulcet tones of Loren, Andrew Fergurson (and the Influence) South of the River Gospel and Family Tree. Bring your family and friends, grab a blanket and enjoy the fine local food and wines on offer. Between sets you can browse the art market, talk to a local maker, or pick up something special. A great day out - not to be missed.
The line up:
LOREN
final file
Having played with the likes of John Butler, Lior, Xavier Rudd and Ash Grunwald, Loren is no stranger to the local music scene. With a voice like silk and a natural gift for story telling, he makes an instant connection with his audiences. With a style that is described as original, dynamic and captivating, he possesses an energy onstage that demands attention. John Butler describes him as, “making the kind of music that makes you feel like you¹re getting a massage. A sweet, gentle voice that is accompanied by a relaxed, melodically plucked guitar - written by a man with a heart of gold.” With over 10 national tours of Australia (and 2 in New Zealand), his fans eagerly await his next show. Loren says, “What I love about music is that it truly is a universal language . . . it reaches us on so many different levels and it reminds us of what connects us all. It’s awesome to be a part of it in a live sense and also to know that people are enjoying it on an individual level in their own space.” www.loren.com.au
SOUTH OF THE RIVER South of the River, a 40 voice a capella choir explores the music and rhythms of Africa, traditional African American gospel and original Australian compositions. They have wowed audiences at the Queenscliff, Apollo Bay, St Kilda and Williamstown Music Festivals. The choir has created successful collaborations with other artists including The Prayerbabies, Tony Backhouse, Geoff Achison and award winning composer Burkhard Dallwitz. www.southoftheriverchoir.com
ANDREW FERGURSON & the influence Andrew Fergurson and the Influence cross many musical genres, but their roots reside in Rhythm and Blues. With a steady diet of eclectic music, the band have been compiling riffs, beats, licks and grooves that give them a unique signature style. The line up includes Andrew on vocals and guitar, brother James on the classic Hammond organ, Peter Barnes on bass guitar and Tim White on the drums. www.myspace.com/andrewfergusonmusic

FAMILY TREE Local Gippsland band Family Tree make music a family affair. Dad Tom Sizer, along with children Holly, Willow, Rowan and Linden play swing, classic rock and roll, and laid back contemporary (think Waifs, Pete Murray and Missy Higgins). With a energetic combo of guitar and bass, drums, ukelele and coruscating blues harmonica, Family Tree is a favorite on the festival circuit.

the
chill vibe
words as told to sally o’neill photos supplied
It’s the coolest day this summer. Chill Island, is now well established on the coast’s festival calendar. It’s the combination of the unique venue – on an island, off an island, along with stellar line-ups, great food, markets and a major chilled-out vibe that makes Chill so special…
Mr Chill
Scott Owen
What’s exciting you about Chill 2010? We’ve made a lot of changes for this summer’s festival. We’ve added a second stage that will have a funky, party feel to it. It will be another place to chill on the day with lots of international dj’s and groovy sounds. We’ve also re-organised the site around and added even more great food and wines – bring it on!
Music and you? I fell into music by luck. We had a piano at home that no one knew how to play. I drew the short straw and had to go and have lessons then really got into music at high school.
How did Chill begin? As soon as the weather warms up, I relocate and hit the waves at Phillip Island. I always thought that Churchill Island would be a great place for a festival and after a few years of contemplation, it became a reality.
Your favourite chill moments? Watching people coming over the bridge onto Chill Island. They walk, ride, hitch, drive and bus in. I love seeing them rolling in ready to party. It’s also gold when the headline acts come on stage and everyone goes beserk. I really dig the vibe of the markets as well. Any last words? The Living End has been one of my fave bands for years. I’m amped about them coming to Chill. They’ve got a reputation of putting on a great show. They’re not playing any other festivals this summer which makes Chill unique. This year, we’ve got a pretty much exclusive lineup. Dub FX will be awesome! 2010 will be bigger and better than ever. We’ve had the fastest pre-sale ever, so it’s going to be a big one. Get your tix fast! Catch me on Facebook!
Have you been to Phillip Island? I used to go to Lorne for my holidays. Chris used to go to Phillip Island – his dad raced motorcycles. I used to go and stay with them quite a bit, I’d come down to get waves.
Your influences? Chris and I have a mutual love of 50s rockabilly music – as we’ve grown, our music has grown too. I still love the 50s music – it’s an influence. Memorable moments? We’ve done some crazy big shows, we’ve been lucky; Reding, Leeds, Big Day Out. To look out across 50 000 people is amazing. We haven’t made our gigs easy for ourselves though, our music takes a lot of concentration. It’s hard to think how great it is when we are concentrating on what we are doing! Where are you at now? Not many bands have been together as long as we have, we don’t take it for granted. We had a bit of a shake up between us before the album White Noise, but the reaction we have got since its release has been great. It has re-charged the batteries to keep on going. We got over that hurdle. We are all feeling good now. Copenhagen’s been in the news lately... Yeah, it’s typical of Copenhagen to be making climate change a priority. I appreciate that about the Danish, they are the quiet achievers. There’s a place I love there called Christiania. It’s one big hippy commune and the Danish people are really enjoying themselves there! C Win Chill tix! See page 54

summer health & fitness It’s never too late to start getting fit & it’s not too hard to keep up your fitness during the holidays. Super-fit Elaine Furness from ‘Island Healing’ gives us some hot summer fitness tips: Set achievable goals and start today. Get Moving! Do some incidental exercise: Go for a 10 min walk during your lunch break; park your car further away and walk; try not to sit for more than half an hour during the day; play with the kids; do some gardening. The options are endless. Get up early! When you hear the birds, it’s time to get up. Earlymorning exercise creates a calorie deficit and improves metabolism. Commit to a fitness program and stick to it. Join a team or club: cricket, tennis, bowls, golf, boardriders. Get outdoors and discover our beautiful parks, beaches and walking tracks Aim for 30 minutes of ‘cardio’ (exercise where you raise your heart rate but are still abel to talk) every day. Reward yourself with a special pampering such as a massage. Say no to food you don’t need. ‘Clean up’ your eating & drinking habits before the party season. Drink more water – aim for 3 litres every day. Exercise can be done anywhere, anytime. Get your cardio from walking, jogging, swimming or surfing. Do some body-weight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, dips, chin-ups, crunches or an abdominal bridge. The beach or a seat in the park are all the equipment you need.

dolphins swim with the
words sally o’neill photos supplied by polperro
Oh, I love this job! Having to spend a day cruising on Port Phillip Bay with the porpoise (I mean purpose) of swimming with dolphins is heaven-sent!
As I walk down the Sorrento Pier towards the ‘Polperro’, I realise that this crew is one that also loves their job – with a capital ‘L’.. Jess and Ben greet me like a long-lost friend, and I ditch my short-sleeve wetsuit for the lovely long steamer they offer. It’s all business, and as wildlife is exactly that - wild - we need to be suited up and ready to jump in the water at any given moment: so I struggle into the wetsuit before the boat leaves the pier. It’s me and three French people and a Spanish family on board today. Both of the French women are called Marie, and they are equally excited about their trip. This is an internationally-recognised experience. Jess gathers our rubber-clad group to give us the rundown. “Today we are looking for Bottlenose Dolphins. There is a population of about 100 in the bay (Port Phillip). They are completely wild – we don’t feed them and we don’t touch them,” she emphasises. “Basically they love food and sex, so we often see them doing either of those things but, if there is a nursery pod (mothers and calves), we don’t get in the water.”
Jess gives us a demo of how to enter the water and use the snorkel, reinforcing the fact that we must keep within the 13m mermaid-line ropes. Polperro was the original dolphin-swim operator in the bay (there are now three) and has built a reputation on caring for the bay’s wildlife through responsible behaviour and a commitment to research and protection. We ‘warm up’ with a stop at ‘Chinaman’s Hat’ – an exclusively male outpost - for seals, that is. Australian Fur Seals bask in the sun on this man-made structure. Jess tells us to move quietly and not get them too excited, as they are “like puppy dogs” and get quite revved up. Splashing into the 14-degree water takes my breath away, so it’s a while before I can focus and swim (I feel more like a beached whale). The curious fellas start to slip into the sea and glide gracefully around our group, playing with each other and teasing us with their swift moves.>

The seal swim has amped us up, and the boat moves on as Ben brings us a welcome cup of tea. We stop to check in on the Australasian Gannet bird colony where the first fluffy chicks of the season peek out from under their mums. These birds dive head first into the sea for fish, so they have special built-in‘crash helmets’ to cushion their brains. From there, it’s on to find the dolphins. In a 1,950 square kilometre bay, this is a challenge. Luckily, the crew’s years of experience make it possible. We motor near Queenscliff then over to Port Nepean. Jess tells me that she grew up in this army barracks because her father worked there. “I saw wild dolphins every day,” she says. “I also saw the Polperro, and Judy invited me aboard. She told me to come back any time, and the very next day, I was down at the jetty waiting!” That was 11 years ago. Polperro Dolphin Swims was established in 1986 by the Muir family. Judy and family began as proprietors of a research vessel, then became Port Phillip Bay’s first commercial dolphin swim operation. Today, their business has grown to become internationally recognised for their responsible dolphin interactions. Judy is a passionate marine campaigner and a bit of a dynamo. Jess tells me that her boss was the first woman to swim across Port Phillip Heads! The boat suddenly changes course – the crew have spotted a pod of dolphins moving close to shore. Marie, originally from France and now living in Melbourne, explains that she had been on the trip over ten years ago and had never forgotten it. Swimming with and experiencing wild
coast 112
dolphins is a lifelong dream for many, and, when it comes to describing the experience, it’s perhaps better to leave it to others, and even better to experience it for yourself…. “It’s an amazing feeling when a dolphin swims right underneath you and seems to look you in the eye and smile! They seem such fun creatures and most importantly it’s wonderful that you visit them in their natural habitat. I’m returning to Australia with my husband in March and this is very much on my wishlist to do again.” “I had the pleasure of swimming with the Port Phillip Bay dolphins: it was a truly breathtaking experience. As a poor swimmer, I had my concerns and was nervous about entering the water. However, with reassurance from Ben and the excitement of my first close-up sighting of a truly wild dolphin, these fears were soon forgotten. I cannot put clearly into words the feelings of awe, respect, peacefulness and, of course, excitement that came over me. You can only truly understand it when you experience it for yourself. I experienced something very special and life-changing that morning. I was reminded of who I truly am. After having studied very hard for my zoology degree, I find myself in a 9 to 5 office job with few prospects. This experience has given me the motivation I needed to get myself out of the rat race and back to a way of life I know and love.” C
Polperro Dolphin Swims departs daily from Sorrento Pier at 8.30am and 1.30pm, and other times by arrangement. Bookings essential.

Mc Clelland Gallery + Sculpture Park is a true gift of art and nature for all to enjoy.
It was a giant, hairy man that marked the turning point for McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park. When gallery director Robert Lindsay purchased the significant work ‘Wild Man’ by Ron Mueck, it heralded a new era and took the gallery one step closer to its vision of being Australia’s leading sculpture park.
It seems there are two things that most people don’t know about McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park. The first is exactly where it is situated (Langwarrin is just near Frankston) and the second is that entry to this fabulous facility is absolutely free. But back to the hairy man. “The purchase of ‘Wild Man’ by Ron Mueck marked our coming of age as a major gallery,” says director Robert Lindsay of the 2.85m tall sculpture. “Ron Mueck was born in Melbourne and is the most successful Australian artist on the international scene in the 21st century.” Robert came to the gallery in 2003 to install the Rodin exhibition. “This marked an expansive view for the gallery – there were 72 bronze pieces and that exhibition attracted our entire projected annual attendance. We have now trebled the attendance and are on an upward trajectory.” In February 2007, the gallery bought adjoining land which effectively doubled the size of the grounds. This area will be featured in the McClelland Sculpture Survey in 2010. This major outdoor biennial sculpture exhibition was launched in 2003 and offers a $100 000 prize and “is the most important sculpture exhibition in Australia, and a major form of patronage for Australian sculpture,” says Robert. This ongoing patronage of the arts is intrinsic to McClelland’s philosophy. Harry McClelland was part of the generation of Australian artists known as ‘The Gum Tree School’. He attended the National Gallery School in the early 1900s, studying under such greats as Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin. He and sister Annie May (known as Nan) were independently wealthy and led a colourful, bohemian life. Nan was known for her bright personality, was innovative and interested in spiritualism and palmistry. They holidayed in Frankston, moving there permanently in the 1920s. They purchased acreage in Langwarrin in the 1930s and built a country studio in the 1940s. When Nan passed away in 1961, she bequeathed her wealth and the land for a gallery. It is a requirement of the original bequest that entry to the park remains free.
coast 124
Today, their memory is honoured in a vibrant arts facility which is home to several community groups. “Wild Man was a major acquisition which raised the bar and our profile. The 16 hectares of land gives us the possibility of having up to 300 works on show, so people can easily spend a full day exploring the park and experiencing art and nature. Sculpture and art give a sense of identity. Our role is to provide an enjoyable and enlightening experience – to be intriguing, strike the imagination and be controversial. It’s about you as an individual in the time, place, culture you live in. We give an insight into what is happening, where we’ve come from, where we are going.” A visit to the gallery is a great day out. You can pack a picnic or indulge yourself in the café which is light and airy with a modern stylish menu and great coffee. There are indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces. Inside, the three galleries host temporary exhibitions and also showcase items from the extensive collection including works on paper, photographs, painting and sculpture. Lectures and workshops often accompany these exhibitions. There is also a small but very tasteful (and tempting) gallery shop with a range of hard-to-find books, great cards, jewellery, accessories and homewares. Shop manager Trish Delves is an amazing volunteer who often brings back treasures from her travels to stock the shelves. The outdoor sculpture park houses over 70 works set amongst landscaped gardens and native bushland. Works are by artists such as Inge King, Lenton Parr, Clement Meadmore, Anthony Pryor and Norma Redpath. Recent acquisitions include works by Rick Amor, Peter Corlett, Robert Owen, Lisa Roet and Ken Unsworth. The paths meander around the lake and through the bushland leading to inspiring installations at every turn. >

I’ve travelled to Broome every which way. Across the Nullabor then the epic road trip up the incredibly vast west coast via the Pilbara. Across from Katherine through the spine-tingling Kimberley and, my least favourite, those long red-eye flights via Perth. The way I travel to this magical outpost is not important really - I just keep going back. In fact, people say ‘Welcome home’ when I arrive – it’s that sort of place. This time, I’ve discovered a direct flight from Melbourne and I’m flying in. Reds and golds of the sunset surround us as we swoop over the town, wingtips almost touching the buildings. The locals are used to this close call, but it certainly makes newcomers’ jaws drop! Needless to say, the airport is very close to town. From the freezing, singledigit temperatures of Melbourne, the captain announces it’s a lazy 27 degrees outside – oh bliss! Blissful is really the only way to describe Broome. It’s a travel destination with its own unique personality – warm, inviting, eclectic and diverse. This thriving town is located in outback Western Australia on the shores of the Indian Ocean and on the same latitude as Townsville. And the weather (in winter anyway) is nothing short of spectacular. I describe it as ‘sleep under a light blanket, swim in the middle of the day then dine under the stars in a summer dress’ type of weather – yummy! Once you arrive, it’s essential to get into ‘Broome time’ as quickly as possible. But don’t feel pressured: there’s no real rush to do anything
coast 128
much. Just slip into a glorious state of floating through each day with no bigger decision than which beach to relax on or where to enjoy a sunset drink. Life in Broome follows a rhythm of sunsets, tide changes and moon phases. In fact, Broome is a town that has built a tourist attraction out of the moon. When the full moon coincides with a low tide across the mud flats of Roebuck Bay, (and we are talking 9+ metre tide changes) the illusion of a stairway is created. Everyone flocks to experience this phenomenon, either drive-in style from their cars on the headland, or standing along the shore. During the peak season there is also a great market down at Town Beach where you will often see drummers heralding the rising moon. To experience some Broome culture, there’s no better place to start than the Saturday morning Courthouse Markets. Wander through the melting pot of Broome cultures with its range of handcrafts and uniquely Broome wares along with organic fruit and vegies, mango icecreams and Broome’s own coffee blends. Enjoy the travelling hippies who perform and sell handcrafts, or browse some local indigenous art. Broome’s wide main street still retains features of the town’s original status as a pearling outpost. Amongst my favourite landmarks is the
coast travel “The hero is Cable Beach - an endless stretch of white sand. Sunset is a traffic jam, literally, of people, cars and camels.”
world’s oldest cinema garden, Sun Cinemas. This delightful outdoor picture garden opened in the silent movie era in1916. It’s a real treat to just lay back in a deck chair and watch a movie, or the stars, or both. I take a leaf out of the true locals’ book and always take a few extra cushions for maximum comfort. Stroll down Jimmy Chi Lane from the main street to Chinatown proper – a real piece of Broome’s heritage. The ornate buildings back onto the mud flats of Roebuck Bay. It’s not hard to imagine that these shores used to be strewn with pearling luggers from end to end. Since pearling stopped in the1980s, this is now a lovely shopping precinct with great spots such as Ra Ra’s Café (where I like to think all the locals – and me - hang out) as well as ‘Simply Broome’ packed full of unique Broome art and creations. I always indulge my fantasies with a visit to ‘Linneys’. This sumptuous pearl emporium houses treasures you may not be able to resist. On the pearling theme, it’s fun to take a trip out of town to Willie Creek Pearl Farm. What I love most about this working pearl farm is the romance of it. Sitting in a cane chair on the verandah of Australia’s most remote jewellery showroom is something else. The warm breeze blows in gently from the Indian Ocean, the palm trees sway and you
can almost see the old-time pearling masters in their white suits… Anyone who has read Di Morrisey’s ‘Tears of the Moon’ will be with me, but, back to reality… A day in Broome is incomplete without at least one trip to the beach. I love Gantheaume Point where the spectacular red cliffs plunge into the aqua waters. The beach is wide and welcoming, and accessible at nearly any tide. Of course, the hero is Cable Beach – an endless stretch of white sand. Sunset is a traffic jam, literally, of people, cars and camels. The sunset camel ride along Cable Beach is an iconic Aussie journey – one I am yet to experience. After the sun has set, the line of car taillights snakes along the sand as people travel home. I always smile when I see that the camels also have their own blinking tail-lights (on their tails) as they plod home for the night! Evenings are balmy, and frangipani fragrance fills the air. Most restaurants are open-air to take advantage of the superb climate. The wide range of eateries is spread from Cable Beach to Chinatown with a few hidden treasures in ‘Old Broome’ such as Matso’s Brewery and Café Carlotta – book early to enjoy these fine establishments. >

When you meet someone whose nickname is Horrible Haggis, you’d probably be wondering how the name came about, or why it’s stuck. But somehow, that’s the last thing on my mind as I try to keep up with the tall stories that flow easily from this fiery character.
1960s meat-and-three-veg East Bentleigh was home for young Victor Vogt (the nickname came later). “My dad dropped dead from a heart attack when I was about 14, and I left school at 15. I bought my first surfboard and used to hitch down to Phillip Island before the old lady found out I’d wagged school.” Through the early 80s he drifted in and out of work. There were squats and chicks and beer and bikes. “Then I met this chick at a Chain gig and we ended up partying for two weeks. She said she was going to Alabama. I thought she said Louisiana, and told her I’d meet her there. I left Australia with forty bucks.” He hit New Orleans, discovered his mistake and lived on the streets in squats, selling hot dogs in Bourbon Street. After returning to Australia, he was again in and out of work. And then there was The Accident. “Took out my hip, my ribs, my face. I didn’t have a helmet. We were on our way to the Long Flat Motorcycle Rally. Out of our bunch of bikes, mine was the one the idiot-driver hit. I always remember the look on the passenger’s face as I smashed into the door pillar. We had to stop at the pub to get some beers before going to hospital. I’m there in the emergency with the six-pack sitting beside me. Beer and concussion don’t mix, but I was back to party in six hours!” After he recovered, he got a job bagging cement, then became redundant and opened a late-night hot-dog stand outside a strip joint, specialising in Cajun-inspired chilli sauces. He earned up to $1200 for 14 hours work a week. But it was a dangerous gig. “If you’re sitting there late at night with cash, you’re a target. There were lots of fights going on at most venues. I had more than my fair share of diving through the servery window.” Despite all the bad things that ever happened in “the stands”, he defends his time there:“90% of the time in the hot dog stand was fantastic: I met some great people, some I’m still serving after all these years.” Then in 1999, a newspaper ad changed his life. “I was looking to buy a car for the missus, when we came across an ad for a little house on the gourmet trail near Jindivick. A venison farm on eight acres on Jackson’s Track. I said, ‘Let’s go for a quick drive to Warragul before we buy the car’.” The property was up for auction the next day. “We were catering for 60 for a Grand Prix function in the city. I threw the meat in the oven, we jumped in the car, and raced down to the auction. It’s got to be the most stupid thing I’ve ever done, eh? We won the bidding by $250 and used the $16,000 for the car as the deposit.” “I raced back to finish the cooking and get on site - the meat was perfectly done. So there I am serving away and one of the guests asks me, ‘Why are you in a Santa suit?’ I looked up and said: ‘Isn’t this meant to be an Irish Christmas function?’ They said ‘no’ and I thought: ‘Haggis, you’ve just spent $150,000 that you don’t have, and you’re standing here mistakenly in a Santa suit at a corporate function. Get a grip.”
The next day, wife Lisa told him not to read his horoscope. “So I did. It said: ‘Don’t do it. You can’t afford it. You know you won’t listen to anyone, but don’t do it’.” The deer ate the first few hundred chilli plants that Haggis planted, but he kept going. Sales kicked along, with business across Australia and from the USA and Singapore to Brunei. He and an old mate launched the 1st Victorian Chilli Festival and later changed the name to the Hot Sauce and Fiery Foods Festival. Since then an estimated 40 to 50,000 burnt-mouth fanatics have arrived from across Australia, New Zealand … and … hot-diggity, even from Texas, the home of chilli. And y’all come back, now. Or, more correctly, they used to… In 2001 the business had expanded into a restaurant called Noeyedeer (say it slowly) and the family had expanded to include two daughters, aged six and ten. It’s February and it’s Black Saturday. The buildings are timber. “And our insurance had expired the night before,” says Haggis. “I sent the girls away and stayed here and defended. The restaurant survived and I laugh at it now, but no way in hell would I do that again.” And then his trouble really started. He attended a local fire recovery meeting and discussed with officials his plans to run the annual festival the following weekend. “We were given the OK to go on with the show.” That was on Wednesday. Then, on the Friday - the night before the festival - he was told to cancel the event. Authorities deemed it too dangerous to have visitors coming through the fire-hit region. “I said, ‘What do you mean? We’ve got people coming from across Australia and around the world. You had better come outside and tell them, because I’m not going to’. I was mad as hell, in tears. I can’t remember sleeping that night. Apart from the fire, it was one of the worst things I have ever experienced.” Every year the festival supports a charity. “The stupid thing was that the charity for that year was going to be the fire relief fund – and I had just been told that I couldn’t run the festival.” He had to write off eight to ten months of preparation and at least $20,000. “I’m still paying it off. I lost all the money from the festival, and I’ve developed health problems. I haven’t had a catering job for six months. It’s hard when you’ve got no work.” But, he’s booked February 21 and 22 for the 2010 festival. “This will be my Grand Finale, and God help anyone who tries to stop me.” The boy from the suburbs seems to be a veteran of rolling with life’s punches. “If you don’t put your cohunas on the line, you’ll never know.” Oh, and the nickname? “I used to live in St Kilda and cook for some ladies of the night and dancers on Friday nights. I served them roast leg of lamb with bourbon chasers - those were the days. I got the name Haggis just by being the cook, and the Horrible part came about from some old Italian blokes I used to give a hard time to.” C

Sparkling summer words rick lacey photo christina prochazka
Warmer days and festive events – must be time for sparkling wines. We take them for granted, but they are a relatively recent development in wine – evolving only 400 years ago. Not long, when you realise that wine has been traded for around 5,000 years. In truth, wine-producing regions have probably always dabbled in a bit of sparkling. About half way through its fermentation, wine is bubbly, sweet, fresh and pretty nice – surely it made its way to the table in winemaking regions. But sparkling wine as we know it did not come into being until around 1660, and it first happened in England. The major cause was climate change – global cooling caused “The Little Ice Age” from the mid-1500s to mid-1800s. In addition to causing famine and strife, it wiped out England’s vineyards and changed the map of winegrowing in Europe. It was particularly severe around 1660, and it is thought that in France’s cooler regions such as Champagne the cold stopped fermentations before they were complete. Wines shipped to England in barrels were bottled there in winter, and with warmer weather in summer any unfinished ferments re-started in bottle. Lots of exploding corks and bottles, but enough just right to make this fizzy wine a fashionable drink in London at that time. As the Champagne region was a red wine producer at that time, it’s reasonable to assume that the first sparklings were red, white and all shades between. Something to ponder as you sample some of the terrific sparkling wines from Gippsland: there’s nothing as good as sparkling red with the Christmas turkey – a very Australian contribution to the festive season. Sparkling red production in Australia began around 1880 and has eventually delivered a pretty unique style of wine. C

rchie’s on the creek
Gather round foodies, and head to Archie’s Creek. South Gippsland has just secured a major new culinary destination with oodles of style garnished with warm, country hospitality.
words sally o’neill photos warren reed
What began as a dream for local entrepreneur Vern Rickman has turned into a reality that I suspect is even grander than the original vision. With an opening scheduled for December, we took a sneak peek at the many and varied aspects of Archie’s on the Creek. Vern & Debi Rickman are passionate about their food and the area they live in. Their glamorous, contemporary restaurant and event centre, just outside of Wonthaggi will showcase Gippsland’s exceptional produce. Because they believe that the region produces Victoria’s best Black Angus beef, they have designated the restaurant as an upmarket steakhouse complete with kitchen garden and dry-ageing facilities. Their philosophy is simple: local, organic, fresh and abundant. The entrance to Archie’s on the Creek is opulent, and you can’t help stopping and staring at the enormous crystal chandelier above you. Operations manager Michael Augustin has spent months recruiting and training the hospitality team, and his work has paid off. Our hostess,
Sierra, greets us with a warm smile and gives us a quick tour before we dine. There are many facets to the facility. Apart from dining, there are ample amenities for conferences, functions and private dinners. The ‘Hound Room’ can seat up to 80, the ‘Fox Boardroom’ is perfect for a small meeting of 12 and there are five discrete dining areas. For a more casual affair, the brasserie and cocktail lounge is great for a coffee during the day and transforms into a stylish cocktail bar by night. This is my second visit to Archie’s, and the cellar never ceases to amaze me. Dan Murphy would be envious! There are over 15 000 bottles of wine in this room. Vern’s love of quality reds is evident, but my personal favourite is the champagne wall. Lock the door and leave me in there is what I say! But Sierra ushers me out through the VR (Vern Rickman) tasting room where the photographer’s eyes glaze over for a moment at the 100 scotch whiskies and boutique beers on display. This is perfect for a casual evening of indulgence over a few grazing plates. It may even end with a top-notch cigar or two. Make sure you book a taxi! >

I can cook, and I am a big lover of great food, but I am definitely not adventurous with ingredients and techniques. As a result of my lack of exposure to the culinary world, I have always preferred to stick with what I knew. Then I discovered that the culinary world has been brought to our doorstep. Cleanskin Kitchenware is now hosting Classes by the Masters of Food, and expanding our notions of what is possible. Award-winning and world-renowned chefs and restaurateurs are being invited to share the knowledge and experience they have accumulated over hundreds of hours providing pleasure to our palates. This includes Pierre Khodja of Hawthorn’s Canvas Restaurant – recently achieving a Hat in the Age 2010 Good Food Guide. During this ‘master class’ session, I had the privilege of discovering some wonderful recipes as well as acquiring useful techniques and learning to use a broader variety of cookware. All the while, Pierre fascinated us with stories of his first-hand experiences around the world. As the room started to fill with glorious smells that kicked my senses into action, I also noticed our wonderful hosts, Michele Wittner and John Vincent, arranging plates and cutlery. Could this mean we would get to eat the beautiful food we were witnessing the creation of? Then the crusty bread came out... yes, we would! I was in awe. Not only was I learning lots and thoroughly enjoying myself; I also got to eat a four delicious course’s cooked for me by an award-winning chef! I can now cook using a fantastic earthenware dish called a tagine, I own a set of sharp knives (a must in every kitchen), and have added couscous to my repertoire. I have learned how to enjoy broad beans in my cooking; I can make filleted fish look whole; I can preserve lemons, make fresh harissa, and I have expanded my spice and herb selection tenfold. I have been inspired by a master, and I am definitely booking into the hands-on class next time! C

Let’s beat cancer…
with your help
Childhood neuroblastoma claimed Phillip Island’s Kahlilla Blyss Donahoo in August 2008. Her struggle must not be in vain. About 50 Aussie kids are diagnosed with neuroblastoma each year. Today, even with aggressive chemotherapy, only about 25% of kids with the advanced disease survive. But caught early enough, it is treatable. And beating this cancer could mean gains against other cancers, even in adults. Kahlilla’s friends and family have launched the You Are My Sunshine Foundation (YAMS) partnered with The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, Melbourne.
Help us discover a cure. Visit us at www.yamsfoundation.org.au Phone us at 5956 4118 or 5952 3222 Please come and share Kahlilla’s legacy ...

Passionate about the environment Seagrove facts •
A 23 million litre, computer designed wetland works in concert with smaller “rain gardens” located in every street to make stormwater up to twenty times cleaner before it reaches Western Port.
• Over 800m of existing overhead powerlines were replaced with underground power to improve views and allow trees space to grow. • Seagrove’s 35,000m2 of landscaped open space includes over 130m of elevated boardwalks as well as extensive walking and cycle paths.
• 4,500 litre rain water tanks in every home save over 10 million litres of clean drinking water each year. • An underground LPG network reduces greenhouse emissions by 3,000 tonnes annually by reducing demand on conventionally generated electricity. • Energy-efficient street lights powered by accredited green energy reduce energy consumption by 48% and greenhouse emissions to zero. • The barbecues in Seagrove Park are powered by six solar panels on the roof of the picnic shelter. storybook cottages

words sally o’neill photos storybook cottages
For nearly twenty years, family-owned Storybook Cottages has been designing unique kit homes and buildings with character. Company founder Nathan Cairns-Malcolm has used his skills to incorporate a unique accommodation model into their Red Hill property, and the ‘no vacancy’ sign has become a regular feature. The family business located in Frankston South started in 1990 with a philosophy of good design on any budget. “Everything is custom designed,” says Nathan, who has been with the company since its inception. “These days much of the architecture around is franchised, ‘Big Mac’ and quite bland – there’s not a lot of choice out there,” he says. “People are drawn to our architecture because we specialise in high-character, dramatic designs with a unique personality. They reflect the aspirations of our own lives.” Along with 1700 unique house designs for every budget, the team at Storybook also specialise in designing accommodation. Buildings such as bed-and-breakfasts lend themselves to the dramatic and fantasy-style architecture Storybook does so well. In fact, Nathan applied his skills to the design of a self-contained accommodation facility on his own property in Red Hill. The accommodation formed part of the original plan for the property, which includes the home of Nathan, his wife Joanna and their four children. The stylish, self-contained accommodation sits well on the block which is nestled amongst the Mornington
Peninsula hinterland. Because the plan was to incorporate the accommodation into the block from the outset, its scale and form perfectly complement the main dwelling. It’s a stylish and successful result, yet it was done on a tight budget. “The traditional exterior features sandstone, weather boards, character shapes and balconies. Inside, it’s modern and fresh with a luxury touch,” explains Nathan. Interiors include polished floors, muted tones, cathedral ceilings and novelty touches like LED stair lights. The bathrooms are luxurious: one has a spa and one a double shower. “For environmental reasons, we are only on tank water,” he adds. Being purpose-built, it is perfect for couples as two discrete apartments, or it can open up into one living area for larger family groups. “We designed it this way to give us freedom to work with any market. With four kids ourselves, we wanted to offer the space to families as well as couples,” says Nathan. “I wanted it to work as practical accommodation and be flexible - to cover all bases. >

BUILDING RENOVATION So, it’s time to build, renovate, redecorate or just start planning your dream home by the coast. Whether it be a new look for your back deck or a whole new home, we’ve put together the best trades, services and products on offer all in one handy guide. Any building project does require planning and research. Here are some top tips to get you started:
+ Make a budget Confirming a realistic budget will help guide you as to what you can actually achieve with your hard-earned cash. + Do your research From where you buy or build to the finishes you choose, it’s all about research. This process includes visiting homes and stores for inspiration, reading product guides and talking to people who have been through it already. + Make it yours Don’t forget to be creative and enjoy the process of building, renovating or decorating your dream space. Make it work for you and your lifestyle – now and into the future. Create a ‘dreaming portfolio’ where you jot down ideas about colours, materials, moods and features of places that inspire you.
+ Ask the experts There are many pitfalls to avoid and employing professionals at each step of the way will help to ensure you avoid common errors and major disasters. The experts have all of the knowledge about products and processes available to ensure your project runs smoothly. + Get permission Make contact with your local council at the very start of your project to prepare you for what regulations and permits you will need to obtain – allow plenty of time for this part of the process! You will need to secure planning approval and it’s important to note that, for all building projects over $5000, you and your builder need to sign a major domestic building contract, and only builders registered with the Building Practitioners’ Board can enter into these contracts. For contracts over $12,000 your builder must take out builder’s warranty insurance which covers any structural defects for six years and nonstructural defects for two years.
+ Choose wisely Once you have done the groundwork, you need to make the important decision of appointing your designer or builder. Take the time to ensure you select one that understands your style, needs and budget. + Go green where you can Green initiatives are important considerations and you will be pleasantly surprised by the commitment to ‘building green’ on the coast and the range of new products and initiatives now available. + Complete the picture Our wonderful coastal lifestyle includes great outdoor spaces. Think of your garden as an extension of your indoor space and design it to suit the way you live. + Choose local This saves you time, money and transport costs!
Coast’s building and renovation feature has taken the hard work out of locating builders, finding suppliers, and sourcing the expertise and products required to start your project. Read on to find out more . . . coast 169

PAINT tips – for reducing your ecological footprint when decorating
+ Always select an Eco-safe product. If you are looking for a Washable Low Sheen, select one which has minimal odour, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and impact on your health. Porter’s Paints Acrylics range is formulated to be VOC free, low odour and has minimal impact on your health and the environment without sacrifice to the performance of the paint. + Paint to last. Search for products with long warranties. Another important way of extending the life of your paint is to adhere to the “system” that the manufacturer recommends. Most paints will have a system to follow. Ie, One coat of a primer, followed by two coats of the top-coat. Porter’s Paints products all have a minimum warranty of 10 years if applied correctly. Some Porter’s products such as Mineral Paint has a 20 year guarantee with an expectant lifespan of 30 years. + Measure twice, paint once. Many people guess the size of their room and usually over-estimate or don’t account for the windows/ doors and trims which takes space away from the wall area. Always measure exactly and apply the manufacturer’s square metre rate to work out the amount of paint you need. Always add 15 - 20% to your area to allow for cleaning/ roller and tray wastage. Never thin paint as this can affect the spread rate and performance of the product.
coast 182
+ Waste not, want not. Purchase good brushes and rollers, quality accessories will also give you a better finish and pay for themselves in years to come. Cheaper brushes can lose their bristles, are too harsh and tend to hold less paint. Always store brushes in a dust free environment away from direct sunlight ideally wrapped in newspaper. If you have finished your job and you have more paint left, do another coat. This will strengthen the performance of the product. + Be dirty, clean less. In between coats wrap the brushes and rollers in cling wrap and store them in the fridge. This reduces the amount of time needed to wash them, saving water and paint. When you use natural paints like Porter’s Lime Wash, Boncote, Milk Paint and Distemper the wastewater can be safely used on the garden. Before rinsing your brushes and rollers, scrape as much paint back into the can as you can to minimise the amount of water needed to clean. + Use it or lose it. Storing paint is not ideal. Most paints have a shelf life and depending on how they are stored can affect their lifespan. To get the maximum amount of life out of your stored can, ensure the lid is air tight. A good tip is to stretch shrink wrap over the top of the can before you close the lid. Hammer on the lid tight and secure with some packing or pvc tape around the diameter of the tin. Storing the tin upside down in a dry cool place is important. Regularly shake the can is also important to ensure the paint is even in consistency.

The Porter’s Paints Difference
building + renovation feature
While larger companies in the paint industry are constantly seeking to cut costs through cheapening formulations, Porter’s Paints has never wavered from using only the finest raw materials. Instead of mass-production through cheaper (often harmful) materials, or using less accurate in-store tinting machines, Porter’s Paints continues to make and check each and every batch of paint itself, thereby guaranteeing superior finish, depth and complexity of colour. Porter’s Paints still makes paint and wallpaper by traditional methods and to original formulations, producing an unrivalled depth of colour. Porter’s finishes have been created to ensure harmony and depth, whether inside or outside the home and regardless of style. Porter’s Paints has long been at the forefront of colour trends in Australia, and takes pride in employing a team with a keen eye and innate love of colour.
