Pre-season checklist

DO: 1)

Check your engine and mechanical equipment.

2)

Check all emergency and lifesaving equipment, from harnesses to VHF. Are the batteries on your EPIRBs and personal locator beacons in date? Have your lifejackets and life rafts been serviced?

3)

7)

Check your freshwater system. If it wasn’t drained at the end of last season, pipework might have suffered.

Standing rigging: If it’s more than 10 years old, your insurance company may not cover it and it might need to be replaced. Have it surveyed and be secure in the knowledge that it won’t let you down.

8)

Replace your anodes, even if they don’t look worn. Depletion can take place out of sight. Boats left afloat in a marina can suffer quite rapid deterioration of metal fittings and anodes.

Running rigging: Check for wear and chafe, particularly around wire-to-rope joints and Talurit splices.

9)

Check the anchor and cable, as these are often forgotten and sit in a nasty, damp locker. If you don’t use your anchor often, the cable could be rusting away. Revitalise your depth markers, whether that’s repainting them on to the chain, adding new cable ties, or refreshing your own method of marking the cable.

Check your rigging:

4)

Do you have an outboard? If you don’t use it very often, have it serviced. If you left it down in the water through the winter it can easily foul up from the inside. Fuel can deteriorate if the outboard is not used often.

5)

Check flares and make sure they’re in date. Think about buying one flare every year. You will soon have a supply of working flares without having the expense of having to replace all your flares at once.

6)

through-hull fittings. If they’re not made of real bronze, they can degrade. Check for free movement, and make sure they’re absolutely secure. It’s worth checking, if you still have the paperwork, whether they are made of real bronze or a cheaper material, which might fail.

Check the condition of seacocks and other

DON’T: 10) Don’t think you’re as prepared as you were at the end of last season. Things have a habit of not working. Taking the time to do these checks now could mean you don’t become a statistic this season. Guernsey Cruising Guide, Port and Customs Control 2015

Be safe at sea We’ve put together some useful information to help you safeguard yourself, your boat, and any passengers before and during any trip. Safety equipment While it is certainly possible that you may never be in need of Safety Equipment, you will be thankful that you do in an emergency situation. Essentials Life jackets should not be considered an optional extra in any situation. However, you should ensure that it is of the correct size for your body weight, fitted properly and securely (preferably with a crotch strap or harness to prevent it riding over your head), and that it is regularly serviced to ensure it performs as expected. It is also advised to have a throwable flotation device, possibly attached to a long length of rope. This will greatly assist anyone who has fallen overboard. All passengers and crew should be aware of where the life jackets are and how to operate them in the event they do not automatically inflate. While a mobile phone can be used to contact emergency services, a VHF radio is a far better device to ensure prompt assistance. A VHF radio is not as dependent on additional masts and antennas, and has a much greater range. It is also much easier to pinpoint the source, meaning the emergency services will know exactly where you are. The added benefit is that any calls made on Channel 16 can also be responded to by nearby boats that will quite likely be able to assist before the lifeboat arrives.

A torch along with spare batteries and a fire extinguisher suitable for your type of boat, should also be considered essential safety items. You should carry a detailed chart for the areas you are travelling in. Even if you do not understand everything on the chart, being able to work out your position and surrounding dangers is important. Spare rope is something that can be useful in any situation. A couple of decent lengths can act as anything from additional mooring lines, a tow line, a throwable line to a man-over-board or repairs to damage. Advisable It is also advisable to have the following safety equipment stored on board. This will almost certainly be useful in aiding a quick and safe resolution to any dangerous situations. GPS - this provides a backup for navigation. Be aware though that it should not replace your charts, but act as additional confirmation of your location. Flares - nothing will attract help faster and clearer than a flare. Depending on how far you intend to travel from land it is advisable to at least carry hand-held flares and also parachute flares. They should be stored in a watertight container and regularly checked that they are not out of date. Any out of date flares can be disposed of by handing them over to the police. Life Raft - in the event of an onboard fire or if taking on water, you have the assurance that you and your crew will be safe until assistance arrives. Grab Bag - it should be your last resort to abandon ship,

06

but if needs be, don’t forget to take your grab bag, full of essentials to see you out until assistance arrives. SART - Search and Rescue Transponders are used to locate a survival craft or distressed vessel by creating a series of dots on a rescuing ship’s radar display. EPIRB - Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons when manually activated, or automatically activated upon immersion, send out a distress signal. The 406 MHz beacon which transmits a digital signal, can be uniquely identified (via GEOSAR) which provides instantaneous identification of the registered user and its location. Batteries - this applies to both handheld devices such as radios and torches; but also to larger items such as your bilge pump. A bilge pump is no use without any power, so consider a dual charging system to provide a backup, preferably with the batteries in two different locations on the boat. Mobile Phone - these are very useful regardless of situation, but as with the GPS, it should not replace your VHF radio. Tools - basic tools to allow simple repairs to an engine. Spare parts such as fuel filters, hosing and hull-bungs can prove invaluable. Boat maintenance A thorough maintenance routine can prevent many rescue situations by ensuring that your boat and its equipment can perform to the best of their ability.

rely on the electrical system, which as a result of salt and damp is very susceptible to corrosion. This makes the electrical system a priority of boat maintenance. All electrical lines and fixings should be installed with the aim of keeping them as dry as possible. Any connections should be kept clean and protected with water-repellent, non-conductive grease or a corrosion inhibitor. As mentioned, a dual-charging system or a spare battery kept charged up is also important. After the electrical system, the motor is the most important as for many boats it’s the only means of power. You don’t have to be a mechanic to ensure reliable operation. Regularly check the condition of hoses for both fuel and cooling systems as they are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperature changes throughout the year and can degrade and crack. A quick visual check of all the hoses can ensure that they haven’t begun to leak, or are likely to in the future. As long as an engine has a consistent supply of air, fuel through its hoses, a strong electrical supply and suitable cooling it will continue to run. Fuel & Oil It goes without saying that ensuring oil levels are correct will keep the engine working well. Topping off your fuel tanks before leaving the harbour is best, however if you can’t do that, ensure you have enough fuel for the distance you intend to cover with enough extra to allow for any changes.

The two most important items that can go wrong on a boat are the engine and the bilge pump. Both quite likely Guernsey Cruising Guide, Port and Customs Control 2015

Guernsey Marinas Code of Practice We’d like everyone to enjoy using our marinas and facilities and the following notes give an overview of our code of practice to ensure all users are aware of harbour guidelines.

must give priority to visiting yachtsmen during exceptionally busy times. •

Pick up and drop off points Guernsey Harbours provides areas for local boat owners to pick up or drop off friends and family members when the marinas are not tidally accessible. •

The swan pontoons in the pool area are available throughout the year and local boat owners may use the west side of the walk-ashore to drop off and pick up guests. When space allows, vessels may be moored for up to one tide free of charge. Please note that during low Spring tides the area is very shallow. Please ask the marina staff for any assistance if necessary. From time to time, especially during July and August, capacity may be at its maximum and the swan pontoons may be unavailable to all nonvisiting boats. The marina staff will advise that they

16

The Cambridge Steps are available during most states of the tide and provide easy access ashore. Boats should not be left unattended, it is for the safe and quick transfer of people and not for any other use.

Layby areas •

For those wishing to use local layby areas for more than one tide, the swan pontoons are available to local boat owners for a small charge.

The local layby pontoon in the pool area is designed for short stays and can be used by local boat owners free of charge. A tender is required to access the shore. Please note the marina attendants are not licensed to take passengers on the harbour dories.

Fuel It is strictly forbidden to refuel in the marinas or anywhere else in the harbour except at a designated fuelling berth. Fuel (diesel and petrol) is available from the Boatworks+ berth at the Castle Emplacement (accessible

approximately half tide up to half tide down dependent upon draught) and in the QEII Marina. •

All petrol should be stored in metal containers.

Place adequate fire-fighting equipment in position to deal with engine and cooking appliance fires.

The use of barbecues is strictly forbidden in the marinas and in the pool area.

Tenders Please do not leave tenders on any steps, gangways or pontoons as they may seriously impede other users or emergency access points. In the interest of safety, tenders should not be used in the marinas unnecessarily. Moorings and berths The mooring or berth designated to you and detailed in your mooring agreement is for your vessel only. Please do not lease your berth or mooring for another vessel to use without permission from Guernsey Harbours.

Safety Swimming and diving is not permitted in any part of the harbour, including the marinas. Holding tanks should not be emptied in the marinas or harbour and where possible please avoid using on-board toilets when moored in the marinas or pool area. Water Water is available on the pontoons but only for the purpose of washing down boats if no island wide restrictions are in place. Hosepipes are no longer available and boat owners are requested to use their own hoses. Refuse disposal Waste bins and recycling points are provided near all marina gangways. DO NOT throw rubbish into the harbour or leave it on the pontoons: as well as being unpleasant, it is also an offence.

Please do not use any other mooring or berth not designated for your vessel, or lay alongside piers, jetties or ships without prior permission of Guernsey Harbours.

Beaufort Scale The Beaufort Scale is used throughout the marine world and has developed over many years since it was first devised by Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1806. It is defined for seamen in terms of sea state with emphasis on the observed effect of the wind, rather than the actual wind speed. Wave heights in the scale are for conditions in the open sea, not along the shore. Beaufort

Speed Limits

Speed limits from four to six knots are in force in St Peter Port and St Sampson’s harbours. A speed limit of six knots is in force in most of the bays around the coast of Guernsey and in the approaches to Herm and Jethou. There is also a speed limit of six knots off most of the bathing beaches in Herm and at Rosaire anchorage.

Live round firing

All speedboats must be registered with Guernsey Harbours and must display registration numbers at the stern of the boat. All speedboats must have third party insurance cover of not less than £1,000,000. It is an offence to exceed a speed of six knots within the restricted areas as indicated on the plan except where a permit has been issued.

20

Keep clear of the Fort Le Plomb firing range when the red flags are flying. On the day of firing, navigational warnings are broadcast by Guernsey Coastguard on Channel 20. Dates of live round firing and other navigational warnings can be found online at www.guernseyharbours.gov.gg

The Humps and Brehon Tower Boat owners are requested not to land on the Humps and to avoid the immediate vicinity between the 1st January and 31st July inclusive. These restrictions are necessary to protect the important breeding seabird colonies on these islets, which lie to the north-west of Herm. Boat owners, including kayaks etc, are also asked not to land at Brehon Tower at any time of the year. The interior of the tower is in an extremely dangerous condition and for safety reasons the public are advised to stay clear of this area.

Water-skiing Permits are issued by Guernsey Harbours for waterskiing. The boat must have adequate insurance cover and at least two people are in the boat while towing a water-skier in order to ensure that a proper lookout is maintained at all times. The bays concerned are also popular areas for swimmers and every care should be taken to avoid accidents. Permit holders should inspect the area before commencing water-skiing and should note the presence of any swimmers, particularly those who are not close inshore. Areas of coastal restricted zones in which the speed limit may be exceeded for the purpose of water-skiing, subject to permission from Guernsey Harbours are: Havelet Bay. So much of the coastal restricted zone as lies east of a line joining Oyster Rock and Moulinet Beacon and south of a line from Horseshoe Pool to Moulinet Beacon. Soldier’s Bay (Petit Fort). Moulin Huet. Much of the coastal restricted zone as lies south of a line joining the Cannon Rock, the Dog and Lion Rocks and the rocks south of Bon Port. La Bette. Much of the coastal restricted zone as lies in and south-west of La Bette Bay. Shell Beach - Herm. Much of the coastal restricted zone as lies to the north of a line bearing 270º (T) from the northernmost part of North Jacquets Rock to Shell Beach, to include Mouissoniere Bay.

PLEASE FIND BELOW A MAP SHOWING RESTRICTED ZONES AROUND HERM. The shaded areas are those in which the speed limit is restricted to a maximum of six knots.

VHF Radios Guernsey Coastguard maintains a 24/7 all year round listening watch on VHF channels 16 and 20. Other channels are available but in the first instance for routine traffic, the main working channel is VHF Channel 20. Port Control (located at the pierheads) also operates 24/7 on VHF Channel 12. It is primarily for commercial traffic requesting permission to enter and leave the ports of both St Peter Port and St Sampson and for any vessel over 15 metres in length. Channel 12: This is used for commercial movements within the harbour and should be monitored when entering and exiting the harbour. However, if you wish to make contact with Guernsey Coastguard it should be on Channel 20, and not Channel 12. Channel 16: This channel should be used for emergency purposes only. Using this channel allows emergency services to pinpoint your location by communicating with other radio stations. Channel 20: This is the normal working channel of Guernsey Coastguard and should be used to communicate all arrival and departure messages. It is preferable to mention your intentions, the number of people aboard and when you expect to return.

VHF Radio Licensing & Certification

A person or vessel in grave and imminent danger and requiring immediate assistance.

Any vessel with VHF, UHF, MF, HF, EPIRB or satellite equipment requires a Ship Radio Licence. Ofcom issue licences for free and are valid for life:

MAYDAY call by voice A MAYDAY call by voice should be made on Channel 16. A distress call has priority over all other transmissions. If you hear a MAYDAY call cease all transmissions and listen carefully noting down any detail. Before making the MAYDAY call check that the radio is ON and that HIGH POWER (25 watts) and Channel 16 are selected. Press and hold down the transmit button and say slowly and clearly:

http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radiocommunicationlicences/ships-radio/ Any person in charge of a radio set also requires a Certificate of Competence and Authority to Operate. This will usually be the Short Range Certificate incorporating VHF DSC procedures. Certification can be acquired by attending a RYA day course arranged by Guernsey College of Further Education or Fastcraft Sea School. Guernsey Cruising Guide, Port and Customs Control 2015

The Guernsey Rowing Club

The Guernsey Sailing Trust

The Guernsey Offshore Rowing Club is a vibrant club that can trace its history back to 1894. GRC members regularly take part in offshore and coastal regatta’s held at nearby French clubs as well as local races throughout the summer, while the challenging Sure ‘Herm Rocks’ Rowing Regatta held in Guernsey over three days in the summer, is one of the largest rowing events in the Channel Islands. Participants from Holland, Belgium, France, the UK and near neighbours, Jersey, regularly take part, enjoying a weekend of serious racing of 6km on the Friday, 6km on the Saturday and 11km on the Sunday plus the usual GRC social activities.

The Trust was established in 1988 to enable local children from all walks of life to experience and enjoy the fun and challenges involved with sailing, and to make the sport accessible to all. Over the years the Trust, with constantly improving facilities and resources, has been able to expand the training it provides to cover all aspects of sailing, seamanship and navigation. We are a charitable Trust that relies on donations and sponsorship from our kind supporters to enable us to provide the school children of the Bailiwick access to sailing free of charge during term time. As a Royal Yachting Association Recognised Training Centre we can offer dinghy sailing, windsurfing and powerboat courses for adults and children alike. With a fleet of 33 dinghies, 12 windsurfers and 4 powerboats

“ Welcome to Guernsey

L - Fermain Bay R - Town Church, Victoria Marina

Guernsey may geographically be closer to France but it remains loyal to the British crown, and has done since Norman times. With evidence dating from the Neolithic period, the island has been pivotal in battles between the UK and France as well as being an important port for international imports into the UK. Today the island is independent and self-governing. Guernsey is part of the southernmost group of islands that make up the British Isles. They sit in the Bay of St Malo, less than 30 miles from the French coast. The Channel Islands enjoy more sunshine hours each year than the UK. As a result, a variety of plants and owers thrive in our parks and gardens that may not survive the harsh winters in Britain.

With its milder climate, islanders make the most of the outdoors and, with beautiful beaches and cliff paths, island-hopping to its neighbouring islands and eating ‘al fresco’ during the summer months. Guernsey’s independent status means it has been able to foster a favourable tax climate. This has led to many offshore banks, fund managers and insurance companies establishing ofďŹ ces here. While the traditional industries of ower growing, ďŹ shing and dairy farming have largely been overtaken by the ďŹ nance industry, each still plays an important part, contributing both to the varied economy and to the island’s character.

Port Control Customs and immigration

Port entry and exit

Immediately upon arrival, before any crew member goes ashore, masters of all vessels arriving in Guernsey must complete the Customs and Immigration declaration given to them by the marina attendants. Completed forms must be placed in one of the yellow Customs boxes or returned to a duty Customs official afloat. In addition, vessels arriving from any port outside the Bailiwick of Guernsey must display a Q flag on entry. All persons on board vessels arriving from places other than the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey or the other islands of the Bailiwick must be in possession of a valid travel document.

Commercial vessels are severely constrained whilst manoeuvring within the harbour and therefore smaller craft are requested to keep well clear. A red light at the pier head, one on the south end of the New Jetty and one on the Inter-island Quay indicate that large vessels are under way and prohibit entry and exit of others except small boats of 15m or less under power, which may proceed keeping well clear. It is also good practice to listen out on the VHF Channel 12 for commercial traffic movement. The marinas are illustrated on the map on page 36.

Rabies Arrival All visiting yachtsmen are met on arrival by a member of the marina staff who will provide assistance and a suitable berth for your vessel. All visiting vessels must clear inwards at the main harbour of St Peter Port, regardless of which marina they moor in. Mooring in the QEII Marina is by prior arrangement only. The marina staff are there to ensure the safety of all our customers and they will recommend a berth suitable for your boat. Please advise the staff how long you intend to stay when you arrive. We can take payment alongside and accept cash, debit and credit cards (small charge for credit card payments).

ALL VESSELS ARRIVING IN THE HARBOUR WITH ANIMALS ON BOARD WILL BE SUBJECT TO CONTROLLED MOORING.

The landing of animals from vessels arriving in Guernsey directly or indirectly from places other than the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey or the other islands of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is strictly prohibited. Any animal on board any such vessel in the harbour in the Bailiwick or at anchor or moored in the territorial waters adjacent thereto, must remain securely confined within an enclosed part of the vessel from which it cannot escape. Any such animal found ashore or not confined on the vessel will be detained and may be subject to six months’ quarantine or destroyed and the master of the vessel prosecuted. the Victoria Marina which offers non-tidally restricted berths offering our visiting yachtsmen greater flexibility. Your mooring is designated for your vessel only; prior permission of Guernsey Harbours must be obtained to lay alongside piers, jetties or ships. Please do not leave your vessel unattended for more than 24 hours except by prior arrangement with the marina office. Visiting yachts intending to stay longer than 14 days should also obtain prior permission.

Fuel It is strictly forbidden to refuel in the marinas or anywhere else in the harbour except at a designated fuelling berth. Fuel (diesel and petrol) is available from the Boatworks+ berth at the Castle Emplacement (accessible approximately half tide up to half tide down dependent upon draught).

permission is granted by a Customs officer, no vessel with an animal on board may moor alongside a pontoon or quay. Under no circumstances will any vessel, irrespective of its previous port of call, be permitted to enter the marinas with any animal aboard.

Speed limits Speed limits from four to six knots are in force in St Peter Port Harbour, as shown on the plan of the pool and marinas on page 36. A speed limit of six knots is in force in most of the bays around the coast of Guernsey and in the approaches to Herm and Jethou. There is also a speed limit of six knots off most of the bathing beaches in Herm and at Rosaire anchorage.

Safety

Moorings for visiting yachts

Water

A marina attendant in a dory will guide you to your berth or the holding pontoon just outside the entrance, which provides plenty of space for vessels awaiting the tide.

Water is available on the pontoons but only for the purpose of washing down boats if no island wide restrictions are in place. Hosepipes are no longer available and visiting yachtsmen are requested to use their own hoses.

Moorings alongside pontoons are available in the Victoria Marina for boats up to a maximum of 42ft (12.8m) LOA and a maximum draught of 6ft (1.8m). The sill height is 4.2m above chart datum, with access approximately 2.5 hours either side of high water. Entry is controlled by the marina attendants. Control lights are positioned on both pier heads at the entrance to the marina. Guernsey Marinas now has a walk-ashore facility outside

Swimming and diving is not permitted in any part of the harbour, including the marinas. Holding tanks should not be emptied in the marinas or harbour and where possible please avoid using on-board toilets when moored in the marinas or pool area.

Refuse disposal Waste bins and recycling points are provided near all marina gangways. DO NOT throw rubbish into the harbour or leave it on the pontoons: as well as being unpleasant, it is also an offence. Guernsey Cruising Guide, Port and Customs Control 2015

St Peter Port

With its cobbled streets and picturesque seafront marina, it is easy to see why St Peter Port is considered one of Europe’s prettiest harbour towns. Guernsey’s capital has been a busy port since Roman times. Castle Cornet has stood guard over the town for 800 years. Once cut off by the tide, it now provides a spectacular backdrop to the town as well as staging theatre productions and musical events. St Peter Port’s centrepiece is its beautiful church, which is believed to be the closest church to a pub in the British Isles. If you want to learn more about the island’s history, head to the Guernsey Tapestry at the Gallery in St James Concert Hall, wander through the beautiful Candie Gardens or explore Hauteville House, home to French writer Victor Hugo. If you would rather just take it easy, explore the boutique

shopping, then sit back and relax with a coffee or bite to eat and watch the world go by. The Bailiwick of Guernsey really does have something for everyone when it comes to food and drink. Islanders are passionate about their food and it’s not hard to see why - rich in natural ingredients from both the sea and land, Guernsey, and its food, has a unique flavour. Whether its fish and chips watching the sunset over the west coast, alfresco dining at a Parisienne-style café, a cosy pub lunch or afternoon tea, a beach kiosk snack or fine dining, Guernsey is ready to serve when it comes to eating out. The capital St Peter Port has a huge choice of restaurants with an international flavour and lively pubs and bars to soak up the atmosphere. Throughout the year, the calendar is packed full of food events and food festivals, including the legendary Tennerfest in autumn. The good food doesn’t just stop in

Guernsey though, a short trip to one of our sister islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney will be sure to delight the senses. From farmer’s markets to summer shows, food festivals and town carnivals, Guernsey is ready to entertain you. Outdoor concerts and productions utilise the very best locations with both Candie Gardens and Castle Cornet offering a unique atmosphere and breathtaking backdrops. Floral Guernsey Festival Weeks and Walking Weeks in both spring and autumn offer visitors a change to explore the island on foot with the help of a guide. There are weekly markets and rural rambles, summer shows and food festivals, but for a real Guernsey day out visit on 9 May and experience Liberation Day. Every year on 9 May, the Island celebrates its freedom on Liberation Day and in 2015 it commemorates the 70th anniversary with a programme of events across the island. The Islands’ unique geographical position sets the scene for a fascinating heritage. With evidence dating from Neolithic times, the island has been pivotal in battles between the UK and France as well as being an important port for international imports into the UK. Guernsey has a story to tell around every corner, down each alley and tucked away in its forts and castles, ruins and ancient tombs. Much of the island’s history is told in

our museums and there are information boards at many heritage sites throughout the island. Guernsey culture has been moulded and carved out over the centuries and adapted to fit in with modern life. Visible from the coastline of Europe, its Anglo-French influences are still evident from local surnames to road names and even our local language, D’Gernesiais.

The Bailiwick

Guernsey is the perfect launch pad to explore neighbouring Bailiwick islands and beyond. Whether you are looking for a stroll along a deserted beach or a quiet nook to cosy up and read your book in, an action filled day, a bit of shopping or a chance to explore a castle. Sark Traffic-free, with stunning coastal views and a picturesque rural interior, the 600 residents of Sark get about by bicycle or horse and carriage, which has a dramatic effect on the pace of life. A holiday on Sark really is like stepping back in time. But, while it has retained a more sedate feel, many of the island’s hotels have introduced a more modern luxurious feel. The island has become increasingly self-sufficient and Sark residents produce a whole host of local produce. This is not limited to the freshest vegetables and fruits, the island has its own bakery and, among other goods, produces its own milk and butter and

Of course, the island is also famous for its amazing seafood, with juicy hand-dived scallops and lobsters caught and served daily during peak season. Sark is split into two islands - the main island, which is just over two square miles, and Little Sark to the south, which is accessed by Le Coupee. Refuelling and water services are available and the island shops will deliver any groceries you purchase down to your boat. Alderney The most northerly of the Bailiwick islands, Alderney is a nature lover’s paradise. At three miles long by one and a half miles wide, it is the closest to France of all the islands and has a permanent community of approximately 2,400.

Herm Island is a haven of calm in an increasingly frenetic world. With its award-winning gardens and breath-taking stretches of white sandy beaches, it’s easy to see why it is love at first sight for many visitors to this small but perfectly formed island. This tranquil beach paradise is within easy reach of Guernsey and is a favourite with both locals and visitors, especially throughout the summer season. Car-free Herm is just a mile and a half long and half a mile wide and the coastline offers unspoilt beaches and spectacular views from the southern cliff paths lined with wild flower hedgerows. The east coast beaches of Shell and Belvoir are where childhood memories are made. The soft white sand and clean blue water are perfect for play and swimming but it’s best to tentatively dip your toe in, rather

The island is small, relaxed and friendly and has its own distinct identity. Car passengers do not have to legally wear a seatbelt and there is a box of half-finished knitting in a box at the airport in case you are ever delayed by bad weather. Alderney holidays allow you to discover an island steeped in ancient and varied history, a huge variety of flora and fauna, beautiful beaches and an enviable lifestyle. It is a paradise for nature lovers with a combination of beautiful landscapes and abundant wildlife. The cobbled high street of St Anne has quirky gift and antique shops as well as a post office, bank, hotels and restaurants. Braye beach and harbour is protected by the longest breakwater in the UK, and the surrounding coastline is punctuated with imposing forts from the Romans to the German Occupation of the early part of the 1940s. Pour nos visiteurs plaisanciers français

“ Bienvenue à Guernesey! ”

L - Castle Cornet R - Bordeaux Harbour
