After 29 months of growth in new car sales across the UK there is no sign of a slow down, proving that the motor car is still the most popular choice of transport. September sees the introduction of the new number plate in the UK - which will further increase sales as the rush to have the newest model with the latest registration begins. However, how will that affect Guernsey, and why are sales booming?

While we do not have registration changes here in Guernsey at present, islanders will benefit from many of the manufacturers’ offers during the month, so now is a good time to look to buy a new car.

Some of the offers do not apply here; those tend to be finance deals or PCPs offered through the manufacturer’s own finance company, but all local dealers will be able to offer a credible alternative so don’t delay, this could be the best month to buy.

The UK economy has seen a steady recovery since the dark days of 2008, and manufacturers have got away from the lines of thousands of new vehicles parked up for sale - images we all saw. Now the production lines are producing for a market with supply and demand being better balanced, and this in turn is delivering more of what the consumer wants at the right price. The result is a more stable used car market with better product, good warranties, and finance packages available, so the upturn in new sales has brought success across the used forecourt as well.

Celebrating the 25th birthday of its iconic twoseat sports car this year, Mazda was delighted to announce the launch of the 750 examples of the 25th Anniversary vehicles to UK customers in August. The unique 25th Anniversary Limited Edition MX-5 is creating quite a stir.

The Mx-5 was first revealed to the public in February at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show and was an immediate sensation. Reintroducing a category of vehicle that had become all but extinct by the early 70s, it was an instant hit on a global scale, far outstripping the company’s own sales predictions.

When global production reached 531,890 units in May 2000, the little Mazda was certified by

Guinness World Records as the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car in history. Total global production passed the 900,000 mark in February 2011, and the Mazda MX-5’s Guinness certification was updated.
