TWO NEW POCKET ROCKETS FROM THE ADAMS FAMILY B

reaking cover at last month’s Geneva Motor Show were two exciting new versions of the ADAM, Vauxhall’s urban chic newcomer.

First up was the funky urban mini-crossover the ADAM ROCKS. This was previewed as a concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and after receiving a rapturous reception the production model made a show-stopping debut a year later. Compared with other members of the ADAM family, ROCKS is taller, wider and tougher in appearance, while also offering a full-length electric folding canvas roof.

ADAM ROCKS’ new crossover body style is supported by a chassis that is raised 15mm with a wider stance. Parts of the chassis system have been modified or retuned – including dampers, springs, the rear suspension geometry, and steering. The higher, wider looks are matched by a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Bodywise, protective, anthracite-coloured cladding is wrapped tightly around the ADAM ROCKS, giving it a tough, muscular look. An integrated rear roof spoiler and LED daytime running lights also come as standard. Silver skid plates front and rear and a bold chrome exhaust complete the exterior design.

ROCKS combines its rugged individuality with open air fun. The electric folding canvas roof creates a wide opening into the sky. This stylish system has no negative impact on body stiffness or on the car’s functionality: the boot keeps the full opening of a hatchback and loading volume remains untouched.

ROCKS is the first model to feature Vauxhall’s all-new 1.0-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo three-cylinder engine. This high-tech pocket rocket raises the bar for three-cylinder engine refinement and packs up to 115PS, with impressive low-end torque of 166 Nm. The new engine tops a powertrain portfolio including ADAM’s three current four-cylinder naturally-aspirated units comprising a 1.2-litre engine with 70PS and a 1.4-litre available in two power outputs, 87PS and 100PS. ADAM ROCKS pricing will be announced when it goes on sale in the summer.

Also debuting at the Geneva Motor Show was the close-to-production ADAM S, the hot new performance version of Vauxhall’s urban chic newcomer. The ADAM S features a 150PS, 1.4-litre Turbo ECOTEC engine, sports-tuned suspension, VXR braking system and distinctive ‘Red ’n Roll’ styling.

The turbocharged, four-cylinder, 1.4-litre engine, has been exclusively developed for the ADAM S. It delivers 50 per cent more horsepower and 70 per cent more torque than its naturally-aspirated 1.4-litre stable-mate. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it propels the ADAM S to a top speed of 137mph.

The ADAM S gives further impressions of features from the future production version. Its red body paint is paired with an anthracite grey roof enhanced by a special rear spoiler; the grille brand bar and door mirror caps both feature a sporty carbon-look. The front lip spoiler, side sill moldings and an extended rear bumper cutout with a visible, bold exhaust tailpipe complete the ADAM S livery.

GMTA SAYS TRAFFIC STRATEGY IS FLAWED Following the announcement of the States’ new Transport Strategy last week, the GMTA has considered the information released and would comment as follows: We feel the transport strategy falls at the first hurdle in its objective to reduce emissions by only making an emissions charge to the purchasers of new vehicles registered in Guernsey. In so doing, the use of older, more polluting, vehicles is encouraged. The GMTA fully recognises that the polluter has a responsibility to adapt to environmental changes, however this needs to be done in a fair and even way. Our proposal is a structure that reflects a broader range of annual charges. To give an example, a ‘city’ car would cost from £0 to £30 per annum, and the vehicle with the highest emissions would pay £490 annually if it exceeded emissions of 255g/km.

In our opinion, the width charge should be withdrawn as it will have an impact on people who need a larger vehicle, for example those with large families or who tow, freight vehicles, taxis and buses. Vehicles are not built with the island in mind but conform to EU regulations, which has meant the safety equipment on board has seen increases in their size over time and is unavoidable going forward.

Leaving out any sort of safety check sends out the wrong message, as driving an unsafe vehicle is a lethal weapon.

MOTs make people think of expense, but most regularly maintained vehicles would pass, so the question is ‘would you take your nearest and dearest in an unsafe car or travel abroad in it?’ This gives food for thought. We would advise that the following top five items should be checked annually after the vehicle is three years old: steering, brakes, tyres, bodywork and emissions, and if it failed the test the owner could choose where any rectification work would be carried out.

The aim to encourage people to change their habits by using alternative transport is to be commended, be this walking, cycling or using public transport, but our road structure and the lack of A to B journeys will not reduce the use of the car - as has been proved in many other jurisdictions. Driving a car is a lifestyle choice and it will take a lot more discussion to come up with a more suitable solution; but this transport strategy is not the right one. We would like to see it rejected totally and for the issue to be moved forward in consultation with all sections of society who will be affected, to bring a more workable and fair strategy to the States in the future.

I’ve been at Forest Road Garage for almost 7 years.

How did you come to work for Forest Road Garage and where does your interest in cars come from?

Having been in the trade since I left school, my previous job involved shift work which really didn’t work well with my ‘band’ and personal life. So, through the good old Guernsey Grapevine I heard that Forest Road Garage was looking for a technician, the rest, as they say, is history.

My interest in cars came at an early age (7 or 8) – I was fascinated about how an engine worked and as my

father was in the trade he let me help him work on cars.

Describe a typical day.

My day always starts with a cup of tea and possibly a biscuit or two! My first job could be a service, a breakdown, a pop in with an engine light on or even a rattle etc. If I’m working on a diagnosic job then there could be a bit of head scratching going on. I may even be able to diagnose a problem while the customer waits.

What do you like about your job? Is there anything you don’t like?

What I like most is the variety from one day to another.

No two days are the same. I like to be able to solve problems, even though cars are now very complicated

compared to how they were in the 1970s. I prefer today’s technology – the jobs are more interesting. My dislike would be water leaks!

What do you like about working with Kia/Mazda?

The technical side of the vehicles and the fact that there’s such good value in these brands. And, of course, we are ‘hands on’ and get to know the customers too – that’s ‘family-like care’.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love music and play guitar with local band City Limits who been performing for over 25 years. This is now my part time job as we play almost every weekend. My singing is banned in the workshop though!

omanian budget brand Dacia only arrived in the UK at the end of 2012, but the Renault owned manufacturer has impressed the motoring market with its affordable range of superminis, SUVs and offroaders.

Duster scores high on everyday practicality, too. It has a roomy cabin, a host of storage spaces and a huge boot, measuring 475 litres, and can carry objects of up to 2.70 metres long with the rear bench folded down.

Arguably, the 'jewel in the crown' of its success is the Duster, an SUV that Dacia have sold over 400,000 units of in Europe, in a little over three years. Duster was one of the top ten best-selling cars in France in 2012, enhancing the image of the brand and helping it to win over new customers.
