Why clutter is bringing you down, and what you can do about it By Laurie Sutton
REGION — Certain people just seem to have it together. Perfectly organized house, free of clutter? Check. A plan and a place for everything? Check. Time to do it all? Check. And stress? Nope. The good news is that while some people are born with a need and aptitude for organization, there is help for the rest of us. Two North County professional organizers have weighed in on the negative impacts of clutter in your life, and offer some tips on how you can reclaim your home and improve your quality of life. Danielle Hass is one of the lucky ones. “I am a classic Type A, and have had a passion for organizing as far back as I can remember,” she said. “Rearranging, paring down and organizing the pantries and kitchens for friends and family — aka, I was a nerd.” Her passion has led to a career, and she created Inspired Home, Organization & Design, which is based in Oceanside. Over the years, Hass has helped many families get their lives on track. “One of the most rewarding aspects of getting organized is that it helps us figure out what’s most important in our lives,” she said. “With less clutter holding us back, we have more time and space to pursue the things that bring us the greatest satisfaction and happiness. Great victories can come from decluttering, and reclaiming your space, time, priorities … and life!” Another self-proclaimed Type A is Megan Wookey of Simplicity by Megan. “Becoming organized is not a quick-fix, but rather a skill that needs to be practiced until it becomes a regular part of life,” Wookey said. Her work involves helping those who are less naturally organized to find the cause of their disorganization. “What seems common sense to me is more complicated for others and I have found it incredibly rewarding to help teach these skills, in order to make others’ lives simpler and easier,” she said. “One of the most negative impacts of living with clutter is the stress it puts on us,” Wookey said. “Most simply, not being able to find what you need when you need it can cause frustration and waste time that we simply don’t have in the busy and fast-paced world we live in. On a more subconscious level, constantly being surrounded by clutter and stuff makes us feel overwhelmed.” One of her goals is to set up organizational systems to relieve worry and stressful thinking. For anyone who doesn’t think they have the time to get organized, Hass often refers to one of her favorite quotes by Benjamin Franklin: “Every minute spent in organizing, is an hour gained.” “It really is that simple,” she said. “There is no secret or complicated trick
to getting organized, it’s just age you or get in the way of a matter of devoting time to reclaiming your space, and sorting and arranging your the freedom that comes with space in a more functional it. Getting organized is a perway.” She added that while sonal and unique process for it’s different for everyone, everyone. Then, when we hang up a new shirt, it takes two seconds to drop an old one in the box.” Wookey advises people to start small when it comes to getting organized. “Start with a small area, such as a drawer or pantry,” she said. “Small spaces won’t overwhelm, and it’s fairly easy to eliminate what you don’t need and then organize what is left. It will also leave you with the confidence and motivation to continue on to more challenging areas. • 1 Block from the beach You will be surprised at the ‘high’ you get from creat• Ocean Views ing a clean and clutter-free space.” • 1705 to 2232 Sq. Custom door replacement made simple, precise and effective REGION — If someone were to tell you that you could completely transform and update your home without any on-site construction, paint cans or tarps littering your living spaces, and no estimated completion dates flying by, you might think they were crazy. Mark Collins, general manager of HomeStory in Mission Viejo, wants to assure you that not only is it possible, it can be done affordably and professionally in about three hours. “We specialize in custom interior door replacement for your entire house,” Collins said. “We have the latest digital measuring technology, the highest quality and most cost-effective products available and our entire team is top-notch.” With those three components, HomeStory is able to update any home seamlessly. The process: The first step is to visit the HomeStory website, where you can choose from a wide selection of residential interior doors including closet doors, French doors, glass doors, barn doors, pocket doors and entry doors. Next an associate will come to your home to help you finalize your selection, provide an estimate and take 3-D measurements of each door opening. “We come to your home and provide a free in-home estimate,” Collins said. “Our proprietary digital technology optimizes and integrates measuring, ordering, production, delivery and installation services.” The precision of the process allows HomeStory to update any home, regardless of how and when it was built. “With our technology we are able to accommodate homes that are very old,” Collins said. “Often a house settles over time. And opening up a door frame can compromise the integrity of the original construction. But we can custom cut our doors to fit whatever opening size you might have.” The information gathered at the consultation is digitally streamed directly to HomeStory’s production facility, where computer-controlled machines custom cut each door to match the exact dimensions of the specific openings. “Any paint or other finishes are done at the factory, so when your doors are shipped they are completely ready to be installed,” Collins said. It generally takes about three to eight weeks from the time of your consultation to the day of installation. The products: Interior doors “We have literally gone to every door manufacturer in the country,” Collins said. “We have looked at their products and done quality testing. Rather than overwhelm you, we offer only the best of the best.” Quality doesn’t necessarily come at the highest price either. “We

carry doors in every budget and a wide variety of styles,” he added. “One of our most popular lines is our Signature series,” Collins said. “The simple 2-Panel Square design is offered on all interior doors. They are stylish, elegant and built to last so you won’t have to spend money replacing these doors down the line. They can even reduce noise transmission by 50 percent over a standard door. In addition to the 2-Panel Square design are the 2-Panel Roman and 2-Panel Arch doors. Also popular are closet renovations. “We are in a closet renovation revolution in this country,” Collins said. “Our mirrored doors have come a long way from the traditional metal frames. Our most popular seller has a wide white frame, and the mirror is mounted within the frame instead of on it. The mirrored glass is thicker and more substantial than what was previously available. It looks very elegant and is safer and more durable. Customers frequently call us to replace mirrored closet doors because their mirrors are separating from the door they are mounted onto. Our mirrored closet doors will never do that.” Entry doors: HomeStory San Diego has recently introduced Plastpro Entry Doors to their product line. “Entry doors offer the best return on investment for any home improvement project,” Collins said. “They increase curb appeal and welcome visitors into your home.” Plastpro Fiberglass doors are superior to wood doors because
they have Hydroshield™ water-resistant technology that protects your home from water seeping into the door. “Fiberglass doors have also come a long way and Plastpro doors come in different wood species like Oak, Fir and a beautiful Old World Rustic grain. All of our doors can be stained or painted and look like authentic wood doors and they will not splinter, dent, warp, rot or rust.” The service: “Our number one goal is to take care of our customers,” Collins said. “We want to make them really happy and we want them to know they have options. Our installers are absolutely incredible. Our sales people are knowledgeable and they want the best for our customers. We don’t employ high-pressure sales tactics.” Although HomeStory is a national company, they operate on a small-town business model. “We think everyone is looking for an honest contractor, who will install properly and treat your home with respect,” Collins said. “Our employees are background checked. We take it very personally when one of our team members enters your home.” HomeStory takes pride in being able to make a big difference in its customers’ homes. “We help you refresh your entire home, with one simple upgrade that touches every room,” Collins said. “You can keep your home looking fresh and modern and updated.” To learn more about the products and services HomeStory offers, and to schedule a free consultation, visit SanDiegoInteriorDoors. com or call (619) 493-3733.

California West announces final release of homes in N. County
Brian Murphy of Murphy’s Fine Woodworking, along with the Escondido Art Partnership and others are hosting the eighth annual “Wood: A Furniture Show VIII,” beginning Jan. 13, 2017. Courtesy photo
Brian Murphy carving out an art scene in Escondido ESCONDIDO — The art scene is coming back to life in Escondido and Brian Murphy couldn’t be happier! “Escondido was at one time a real art community,” said Murphy. The art community suffered greatly during the recession. However, one sign that things are starting to turn around is the upcoming 8th Annual “WOOD: A Furniture Show VIII.” This year’s event is scheduled to be the biggest and best exhibition of its kind yet. Murphy, of Murphy’s Fine Woodworking, in conjunction with the Escondido Art Partnership and members of the San Diego Fine Woodworking Association, has been hosting this event for eight years. Murphy’s dream was to create a show similar in content but on a smaller scale as the wood show at the San Diego County Fair. The first show was put together with 10 to 15 local artists — all specialists in their woodcraft field. Last year there was an estimated $100,000 worth of furniture and wood accessories represented in the show. This year will see even more. Different than a typical Southern California art furniture show, this event features functional individually handcrafted furniture. The functionality adds to the aesthetic of the pieces. Last year’s grand prize was awarded to Paul Schurch of Santa Barbara for his game table and two chairs. Many of the artists featured at the show commission, build and sell furniture for thousands of dollars all over the world. “This is the quality of the exhibits you will get to see here,” Murphy said. Woodworkers from all over the area will be exhibiting. “We are getting response from all over,” Murphy said. “It’s exciting.” Others in last year’s show include Murphy, Amal McNew, Brian Car-
nett of Escondido, Jerry Beaudry of La Mesa, William Bardick of Temecula, Mark Giglio of Fallbrook, David Marr, Del Cover, Craig Thibodeau, Bob Stevenson, Patrick Edwards, Patrice Lejeune, Louis Plante, Paul Applequist and Dick Ugoretz of San Diego, and 10 other craftsmen. The show will run from Jan. 13 through Feb. 4, 2017, and will kick off with an opening reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14. “Stone Brewing is a major sponsor and we will have a few local wineries involved,” Murphy said of the event, which is put on by the Escondido Art Partnership the city’s Municipal Gallery. The reception, which drew 400 people last year, is an opportunity for the public to meet the woodworking artists who will be featuring handcrafted furniture styles ranging from contemporary to traditional, as well as, veneering and marquetry. “There will be all types of wood, you will see everything,” Murphy said. “There will be a few pieces of ‘live edge’ trees as well.” When he’s not planning this major Southern California woodworking event, Murphy is a custom furniture designer currently working on three dining tables and two Bow Arm Chairs, as well as an impressive 8-foot-wide China Buffet Cabinet, which will incorporate a granite top. This piece is still in the design stage. His specialty is the Arts & Crafts style. “WOOD: A Furniture Show VIII” is free and open to the public at the Escondido Municipal Gallery at 262 E. Grand Ave. on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibition visit escondidoarts.org. California West’s two neighborhoods, Upper Cielo in Rancho Santa Fe and Southern Preserve in La Costa, Carlsbad, have presented the opportunity to craft highly personalized residences in one of the most desirable locations on the West Coast. “As the sun sets on two of the most distinct communities at California West, we are proud to announce the final release of homes at Upper Cielo and Southern Preserve,” said Robert Thorne, CEO of California West. “The homes we’ve built in La Costa, Carlsbad and Rancho Santa Fe focus on sustainability, quality, and artistry, but it’s our residents who turn our craftsmanship into a home to be cherished for years to come.” Upper Cielo, a limited collection of 41 custom inspired residences at the top of CIELO, is proud to announce the final release of luxury homes. The gated community of CIELO features spectacular, custom-inspired homes that occupy some of the highest vantage points along the San Diego coast. The oneand two-story homes range from 3,490 to 4,850 square feet and provide breathtaking views of the Olivenhain Dam, Lake Hodges, ocean, and mountains that stretch in every direction. “Before moving to Upper Cielo, my husband and I wanted to build a home on an empty lot in Rancho Santa Fe,” said Emily Hervieux, Upper Cielo Resident. “Then I turned to California West to help bring our new home dreams to life. Instead of spending months with contractors and construction workers, we were able to move into a home with a high-level of design sophistication and a sense of individuality, thanks to the design team.” Residences at Upper Cielo showcase up to five bedrooms, five and-a-half baths and are priced from the $1.5 millions. California West has also introduced the release of Upper Cielo’s fully furnished model homes, available for sale. That is why we take the time to find the most scenic views and lush surroundings to enhance the lifestyles of our residents,”
adds Thorne. “San Diego provides the beauty and sound of the coast, as well as a close proximity to some of the best shopping, dining, and recreation in the world.” About California West California West is a privately held, multi-generational San Diego builder. Local interior designers talk seasoNal trends and tips
A
By Laurie Sutton
s the weather grows brisk, and hints of the upcoming holidays begin to appear, two North County interior designers share their tips for readying your home for the season. From the biggest trends to their own personal styles, learn some tips to update any room in your home and keep it current with the feeling of fall. A recent trip to High Point Market in North Carolina, known as the fashion week of interior design, gave Elizabeth Aaron access to all the latest trends that will be found in homes this season. Aaron herself is no stranger to forecasting trends, in the last 20 years she has transitioned from a market analyst in the fashion industry in New York City, to receiving her design degree at the New York School of Interior Design and working for top firms on multi-million dollar projects. Eventually she landed in Carlsbad and opened Elizabeth Aaron Interior Design. Highlights from the High Point show she attended for the fall season included bold patterns, raw wood, beach chic, ethnic accents and shag. Yes, shag is back and is a personal obsession of Aaron’s. But she admittedly isn’t one to push clients in any one direction. “I personally believe in designing for clients’ lifestyles,” Aaron said. “I try to avoid trends and rules.” If a client is interested in the latest designs, which currently include scaled down furniture such as end tables and kitchen tables, or industrial chic, including barstools and retro pendants, Aaron

helps them to incorporate these pieces in a way that works for their home. “If a client is in love with a certain style, I will always offer my opinionated opinion to steer them to make start decisions,” Aaron said. As holiday entertaining planning gets underway, Aaron advises a “less is more” approach. “The easy California lifestyle means that you don’t have to overhaul your house to ring in the holidays,” she said. “I prefer simple touches to make the season
festive. There are options for every budget from installing twinkle lights to hanging elegant permanent botanical wreaths to adding whimsical throw pillows.” Lindsay Duff, the Design Whisperer, has been helping North County residents design their living spaces for more than 22 years. “Throughout the years, I have discovered a passion for bringing positive change to the lives of others by transforming their surroundings to suit their intentions,” she said. “A comfortable, welcoming space en-
courages relaxation and productivity, as well as a sense of community.” Duff prides herself on finding new colors, textures and furnishings for her clients. “The color palette has gone to a more neutral color, such as whites of all shades, grays, beiges and hues of browns,” she said, adding that you can add an accent wall that complements the color palette. “And also what you use as your accent pieces can be an inspiration for your color choices. For instance, rugs, pillows, throws, lighting, blinds or curtains, and textiles on your furniture, etc.” Other current trends include unique combinations. “Now we are seeing a mix of Mid Century furniture with Industrial accents using metals such as copper and silver,” Duff said. “Also Modern Classic is very popular today and can be accented with Mid Century and Industrial. The main focus can be Industrial style with accents of Mid Century, and Modern classic for a clean fresh and personal design for your home, office or business.” Staples for Duff’s designs include plenty of green. “Be conscious of your area and add as much green as you can, such as house plants and beautiful flower arrangements,” she said. “It creates oxygen and a sense of well-being, and any kind of water element is always relaxing and uplifting as well.” Duff said that what is trending now is less is more, and echoed Aaron’s sentiments that a little goes a long way for holiday decorating as well. “I love the holidays and my advice is keep it simple,” she said. “Over-decorating can bring down the energy in your home. Have fun and create the space that represents your creative side.”

5 Under $500: Small home improvements with big resale impact By Laurie Sutton
REGION — Fall is a season of change. Kids have headed back to school, the leaves are starting to turn, and you might be thinking about putting your home on the market. If the thought of fixing up your home to get ready to sell is overwhelming to you — and your wallet — some local experts have offered advice. Following are five changes you can make that cost less than $500 each, but are simple and increase your home’s value. 1) Update window coverings “Window treatments are huge,” Jeff Mendelsohn of Sotheby’s International Realty said. An update to your window treatments can touch every room in your home and if you’re handy it can be done easily and within budget. “Take off the
old blinds,” Mendelsohn advises. Mini blinds, for example, can quickly date your home. Replace dated window coverings with curtains, which aren’t hard to install yourself. “You can get really nice things and keep the project under $500,” he said, suggesting stores like Ikea and Bed, Bath & Beyond. 2) Spruce up your yard A quick trip to a local nursery and a willingness to get a little dirty will go a long way when it comes to selling your home. By giving your front yard a mini makeover, you are increasing your “curb appeal” making your home appear cared for and more colorful. “Plant flowers, and ensure that landscaping is neat and orderly,” Laura Lone, a realtor with TURN TO IMPACT ON B13

Local retailer offers amazing, chemical-free, organic beds and furniture Investing in Fall home decor this year just got a lot easier with the largest selection of chemical free furniture at The Futon Shop (TFS). Don’t let the name fool you — these are not your ordinary futons. The Futon Shop is the leading chemical free sofa and mattress manufacturer based in San Francisco, handcrafting their chemical free line of products with toxic free ingredients since 1976. TFS offers comfy and high quality chemical free futons, mattresses and foundations, sofas, sofa beds, platform beds and organic slipcovers and pillows all made without toxic flame retardants, pesticides, or petroleum based foams or latex. Do not compromise your family’s health when it comes to style and comfort. Set your mind at ease by choosing beautifully designed cozy living room and bedroom furniture naturally made by top craftsmen. TFS sofa beds and futon mattresses are organically designed using organic cotton,
latex, coconut fiber and wool as the eco materials, standing by their mission to produce superior chemical free furnishings and innovating comfortable options to support chemical free living. The Futon Shop believes there is a certain level of responsibility among manufacturers to educate consumers about the safety, laws, and regulations that surround the furniture industry, especially when it comes to toxic ingredients. Flame retardants, pesticides, and petroleum are a common toxic ingredient that off-gas from toxic traditional furniture and many of the popular boxed mattress retailers popping up left and right in the mattress market today. TFS provides clear and simple communication about what is inside their products transparently, as well as maintaining a strong sustainable and eco-friendly practice in the everyday manufacturing in their San Francisco Plant for the past 40 years. TFS supports eliminat-
ing dangerous toxic ingredients in your home as well as partnering with like-minded organizations that believe in fighting against toxins in the environment. Eco-conscious shoppers can be assured that there are no toxic flame retardants in the TFS line of chemical free furniture and all products comply with the California law 117-2013. The Futon Shop’s high quality toxic free furniture brings function to your home decor, whether your personal style leans toward a minimalist, rustic, country, mid-century, arts & crafts, or coastal design. The CEO, Suzanne Diamond, focuses on sourcing chemical free ingredients that are local and organic, setting the standard with sustainable and organic practices. These natural ingredients such as Dunlop Latex, Organic Cotton, Virgin wool and Coconut Coir are essential ingredients that are used to create over 45 unique mattresses and sofas.
Each ingredient is assembled to satisfy a variety of desired comfort function, and style, with the primary focus on using safe ingredients for customers ranging from babies, children, teens, adults, elderly, and even the health
and comfort of your family pet. The Futon Shop is focused on the health of their customers, customer service, and a growing outreach to support consumers to have a choice and voice when it
comes to living chemically free. You can find the La Jolla showroom at 7470 Girard Ave., and the San Marcos showroom at Furniture Row 1232 Los Vallecitos Blvd. suite 108. Call (800) 44-futon to find the store nearest you.

Dave Stubbs Realty in Solana Beach said. “Having a well-manicured front yard can have a great impact on a home’s curb appeal, especially since buyers tend to make up their minds very quickly, so a good first impression is very important.” “Adding fresh plantings is beneficial — seasonal, colorful flowers can really liven and freshen up a home’s curb appeal,” Lone said. “Prune and trim to make sure pathways are clear; ducking under overhanging branches or wading through overgrown pathways is frustrating and gives an initial impression that the home may not be well-maintained.” 3) Refinish tubs, sinks and countertops “When buyers look at houses for sale, they judge the value of the home based on noticeable wear and tear,” Brett Davis, owner of NuFinishPro said. “The most obvious signs of an aging home can be seen in the kitchen and bathroom
units.” An easy alternative to expensive construction is to refinish tubs, sinks and countertops, which gives the benefits of a remodel but will save up to 75 percent of the cost and can even be done in a single day. “The better your house’s bathrooms and kitchen look, the higher price it will garner from interested buyers,” Davis said. 4) Ditch the popcorn ceilings Popcorn ceilings are one of the easiest indicators that your home is out of date. And homeowners can keep removal costs low by doing it themselves. “People don’t do it themselves because it’s tedious,” Mendelsohn said. The benefits of removing popcorn ceilings are twofold. Not only will it bring the home up to date, it can also visually increase the size of your home. “It opens it up,” Mendelsohn said. “Popcorn ceilings make a room look not as big.” It’s important to note TURN TO IMPACT (CONT.) Coastal décor shop brings a touch of aloha OCEANSIDE — Living in a beach community, it comes as no surprise that Greg and Stacey Holmes have a passion for coastal décor. However, that they took a leap of faith and did complete 180-degree career changes to turn that passion into a growing business is surprising! The duo debuted Otterlei Coastal in April of this year, and the Aloha vibe they bring to the community is a welcome addition. The Holmeses had lived in Hawaii for 12 years, which is reflected in their personal style. “We decorate our own home and did all the décor for our wedding that incorporated our coastal and Hawaiian aesthetic,” Stacey said. So while their decision to open a store might have been unexpected, it definitely made sense. They named their new venture Otterlei Coastal, representing Stacey’s penchant for otters and, of course, the lei from Hawaii. “We have anything and everything you need to create your own personal oasis,” Stacey said. Offerings include furniture, lighting, kitchen accessories, a complete line of outdoor décor, jewelry, furnishings and more. “We have something for anyone who likes coastal home décor with a touch of Hawaii,” Stacey said. “We are very special-

ized, and there is no other store like this around. We hand-select every product in our store, and visit Hawaii often for inspiration.” “We have a lot of people who come in and say they feel like they are in Hawaii,” Stacey said. “We welcome customers to come in just for the experience, to share in the Aloha with us.” Hawaiian music plays while shoppers peruse the colorful displays. “If you can’t be in the Islands, we help bring it to you,” she added. Being an Oceanside
native, Stacey takes pride in what she brings to her hometown. “People have thanked us for opening this store,” she said. “The town totally needed it and there isn’t anything like it around. It’s great to give back to this community.” Otterlei Coastal is located at 2028 S. Coast Highway 101 in Oceanside. They are open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit otterleicoastal.com to take a virtual tour of the store or call (760) 966-1608 for more information.

5) Deep clean and organize your home Cleaning and organizing are obvious quick and affordable ways to ready your home for sale, but that doesn’t make them any less important. Spending the money to have a professional come in and do a deep cleaning ensures hard to reach areas such as ceiling vents, high cabinets and behind appliances are covered.
Home buyers tend to look at homes with a more discerning eye than a dinner guest would, and it pays to not leave any stone unturned when it comes to cleaning and decluttering. “Decluttering and organizing is huge,” Mendelsohn said. “You can do it yourself or get a professional organizer.” When potential home buyers come into your home, they inevitably imagine how they would fit
there. “Seeing how other people live makes a huge difference,” he said. A clean an organized home helps them to better see how their lives could be there, without any distractions. So as you prepare your home for sale, keep in mind that there are several ways to increase your resale value that require very little money, and sometimes a bit of elbow grease.
