Community rallies behind Vista teacher placed on leave

VISTA — Current and former students and parents are demanding a Vista social studies teacher be allowed to keep his job.

Vincent Romero, who has worked for the Vista Unified School District since 1990, was placed on paid administrative leave from his job at Rancho Buena Vista High School on March 7.

Now, an online petition with more than 1,900 signatures is asking the administration to bring Romero back to the classroom.

On his last day, Romero told students he was leaving because “the organization decided to make a change.” “(They) no longer have confidence in me that I know what I’m doing,” said Romero, whose remarks were recorded and posted on Facebook. “They don’t like what I do. They don’t like the way I do it. So, this is what happens. I’m really

sorry I can’t be with you for the rest of the year. It’s not my choice, but it’s the way it goes.”

In the roughly 4-minute speech to students, an emotional Romero vowed to fight the administration.

“I’m not disappearing,” said Romero, 55. “I’m not going away. This is something I can fight, and that’s what we’re going to

do — we’re going to fight until there’s nothing left to fight with. I plan to be back for your senior year.”

Romero also urged his students to be kind to their new social studies teacher but to give “hell” to Principal Charles Schindler.

“This makes me so angry,” wrote Jeffrey Bright of Fallbrook, who said he graduated from the school more than 20 years ago. “I already fear that our education system is falling apart. I worry my kids are not going to get a valuable education at public schools anymore.”

David Whiddon of San Marcos called the move “shameful.”

“This is a teacher that genuinely cares,” Whiddon wrote. “Both of my sons had Mr. Romero and greatly enjoyed his class.”

A former student, Jasmine Velare of Vista, said Romero was “an amazing teacher.”

“I was lucky enough to get him myself,” she wrote.

ESCONDIDO — An amendment to the resolution of necessity for the Citracado Parkway extension project was approved Wednesday by the City Council.

Debra Lundy, real property manager for the city, said it was needed due to a clerical error, the omissions of deeds to be attached to the land. The adjustment is the only fee parcel being acquired by the city, which is a necessity, she added.

The eminent domain project, which has been in the works for several years, will complete the missing section of the roadway between Harmony Grove, Village Parkway and Andreason Drive.

The city conducted a review of the project, which was outlined in the

environmental impact report from April 2012. Alternatives were discussed with residents in four community meetings and a trio of public gatherings.

“The project as currently designed was located and planned in a manner that will be most compatible with the greatest public good and least private injury,” Lundy said.

She also reported the city and property owners have had more than 35 meetings in the past four years to develop the plan.

However, the property owners did not submit a counteroffer to the city’s statutory offer on April 14, 2015. According to Lundy, the owners did not feel the offer matched what the land is worth, alTURN TO EXTENSION ON A3

Republicans endorse Abed over Gaspar

REGION — The County Republican Party has thrown its support behind Escondido Mayor Sam Abed in the race for County Dist. 3 Supervisor.

The Republican Party of San Diego announced last week that it voted to endorse Abed over fellow Republican and Encinitas Mayor Kristin Gaspar, who is also running for the supervisor seat currently held by Dave Roberts, who is seeking re-election.

Abed, who has been a polarizing figure during his two terms as mayor in Escondido, secured the coveted party endorsement by receiving more than two thirds of the committee’s votes, the threshold required for a candidate to receive the endorsement over a fellow party member.

“Endorsing one Republican over another requires a 2/3 vote threshold — and rarely happens,” GOP Chairman Tony

Krvaric said. “Clearly Sam Abed’s long-time and steadfast commitment to Republican principles and values earned him the support of committee members and we are proud to endorse him.”

Gaspar’s campaign reached this week expressed disappointment in not receiving the party’s nomination, but touted several key endorsements she has received throughout the campaign.

“While I’m disappointed not to get the party endorsement, I’m very proud to have the support of Mayor Faulconer and the four Republican City Councilmembers, Senators Bates and Anderson, and Assemblyman Rocky Chavez,” Gaspar said.

“I’ve been a very effective Republican mayor in a Democratic city by focusing on balanced budgets, economic development, and quality of life and will continue to do so on the Board of Supervisors.”

San Diego Zoo Safari Park opens butterfly exhibit

ESCONDIDO — By Silas Hamernik’s count, at least 24 butterflies had landed on him as he walked through the exhibit. The 9-year-old, clad in a bright yellow shirt and jacket, seemed somewhat dismayed every time one of the insects would land on his arm, shoulder, back — even his shoe tops.

And there were probably plenty more by the time he left.

March 16 marked the opening of the annual Butterfly Jungle exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The several week’s long exhibit allows guests an opportunity to walk among

the butterflies, seeing 30 to 35 different species that have been imported from around the world.

The exhibit receives anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 butterfly pupa for the display, said Don Sterner, animal care manager of the bird department at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The pupa come mostly from butterfly farmers, which the park researches or from butterfly brokers that import the pupa and sell to the park.

“It’s very specific on what we can import,” Sterner said.

The USDA provides the regulations on what can be imported, because,

Sterner added, technically, the butterflies in the exhibit are considered an agricultural pest.

Still, importing the pupa from butterfly farmers has a positive impact on

the environment and supports a sort of eco-friendly business, Sterner explained.

“It’s something that the local people, in say Costa Rica, are involved in,”

said Sterner. “When they become butterfly farmers, they realize that the rain forest around them provides these butterflies, which gives them an income. So they know not to disturb the forests.”

But because the imported butterflies are considered pests, extra staff is brought in, in part to stand guard at the exhibit’s exit, and perform a quick screening, ensuring that no butterfly is hitchhiking on someone’s clothing.

Park staff has also been receiving the butterfly pupa in the weeks leading up to the exhibit’s opening, carefully inspecting them for parasites that could pose a risk to native species or for species that might have been mistakenly shipped and aren’t allowed under the USDA regulations.

The pupas are received with such care, Sterner explained, and are unpacked in Plexiglass containers, almost as though staff was working with some sort of radioactive material.

Adding to the complexity of putting on the exhibit is the discouraging of breeding between the butterflies.

While there’s nothing to prevent them from mating, the exhibit doesn’t provide host plants for caterpillars to feed on once they’ve hatched.

“We have to make sure the plants we have in here won’t encourage any sort of survivability of the caterpillars,” said Sterner. “That’s not to say they’re not going to breed and lay eggs anywhere, because that does happen, it’s just the fact that once the caterpillars hatch out they won’t have food items.”

terfly-friendly plants and flowers, however — a part of the educational component of the exhibit, which aims to raise awareness on the plight of local butterfly species.

“We have endangered species in San Diego County and with all the pesticides and habitat destruction going on, leaves less and less space for things to live, so (we’re) encouraging people to put out flowers to increase the survivability of the species,” Sterner said.

Another goal of the Butterfly Jungle is to tell the story of the Monarch butterfly and its epic migration from Canada to Mexico.

Sterner said they didn’t expect to receive any Monarch butterflies this year, but staff was surprised when they started showing up in the aviary.

Despite the short life spans of the butterflies, some will make it past the exhibit’s four-week long display.

Last year was the first time that the park began working with a botanical garden in Tucson, Ariz., sending the remaining surviving butterflies there once the exhibit closed.

They hope to do that again this year, said Sterner.

Zoos in the old days were about entertaining guests, now it’s to educate guests as to how wonderful animals are and the plight of animals and get people involved, Sterner explained.

“Bugs are animals, too,” he said. “They really are. People don’t think of it that way, but we’re trying to promote that.”

San Marcos uses eminent domain

RSF Road to receive $3 million facelift

SAN MARCOS — San Marcos crews are starting a long-delayed resurfacing of a two-mile stretch of Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos.

The $3 million resurfacing project will give a facelift to the roadway between state Route 78 and Lakeridge Drive, just south of San Marcos Boulevard a stretch lined with retail stores, restaurants, apartments, Alvin Dunn Elementary and several shopping centers.

The project was expected to start in 2015, but city officials delayed the project due to El Niño.

Some portions of the roadway will require pavement removal and replacement, while other segments will have the surfaces ground prior to the final pavement overlay.

Residents and businesses directly affected by the street restoration will receive notice of scheduled work.

While most road repair work will take place during evening hours, daytime traffic delays are anticipated.

“We appreciate continued patience from motorists, businesses and schools during these important roadway repairs,” said City Manager Jack Griffin. “The temporary inconvenience paves the way for lasting improvements.”

Officials expect the project to be completed in the fall.

Man shot, killed in Escondido

ESCONDIDO — A 27-year-old man was found murdered early in the morning on March 17, according to the Escondido Police Department.

EPD responded to a call of a possible gang related shooting at 12:30 a.m. in the area of Escondido Boulevard and 9th Avenue.

At the scene, officers discovered the unresponsive man, who sustained a gunshot to the head.

He was transported to Palomar Medical Center where he later died.

According to the EPD, witnesses saw the victim walking south on Escondido Boulevard just before the shooting.

The suspect, meanwhile, was seen exiting a vehicle and firing multiple shots at the victim before getting back in the car and fleeing the scene.

The car fled west through the south alley of 9th Avenue.

The suspect was reportedly wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, while the car is a white, four-door older model vehicle similar to a Deputy Mayor Michael Morasco said he was surprised the property owners were not in attendance. In addition, he said there has been no indication of the owners’ thoughts concerning the ongoing negotiations.

Mayor Sam Abed continued the discussion saying the hospital has been “very patient” with the city.

When the medical center was approved, they agreed to stipulation of having only one access road, along Mission and Nordal, instead of the usual two access roads.

“When the train comes through … an emergency vehicle has to wait,” Abed said. “I think they have $13 (million) to $14 million in escrow somewhere and they have been very patient with us. Now the hospital is becoming more important to the city and the district.”

The two-term mayor added it is time to move forward for the hospital and public safety.

City attorney Jeff Epp said it appears the project will go through eminent domain, but staff is continuing to work with the owners.

Councilman John Masson abstained from the vote, saying the property owner was a previous client of Masson’s engineering firm.

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos City Council unanimously voted to use its eminent domain authority to acquire several parcels of property it needs for a key road extension near the Cal State San Marcos campus.

The council voted March 8 to adopt a resolution of necessity, which empowers them to use eminent domain to acquire the property, several parcels located between 197 and 199 South Twin Oaks Valley Road, near the intersection of Barham Drive.

City officials said they need the land — some of it temporarily and some permanently — to extend North City Drive from its current block-long length to a quarter mile, where it will intersect with Twin Oaks Valley Road. Twin Oaks is also scheduled to be widened at the intersection.

North City Drive currently starts at Campus Way, the location of The Quad, a recently completed mixed-use complex adjacent to the college campus.

City staff said in a report that the city made an offer to the owners, the Lawrence E. Sullivan and Dolores A. Sullivan

1996 Family Trust, in November, but no agreement could be reached.

Under the state’s eminent domain law, a public agency has a right to force the sale of private property for public good for fair market value. If the parties cannot agree on a purchase price, a jury trial will determine the property’s value.

Corruption charges getting closer to governor California Focus

By Thomas D. Elias Gov. Jerry Brown has tried for many months to ignore the growing scent of corruption now afflicting his administration, instead pushing the worldwide battle against climate change even as he virtually ignored the world’s largest methane leak while it spewed greenhouse gases for months in his back yard.

But serious conflict of interest allegations now reach directly into his office, targeting his chief of staff, Nancy McFadden, the top Sacramento official for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. for many years before she took a $1.04 million golden handshake in 2011 before rejoining Brown, for whom she worked in the 1970s.

Not only did McFadden take PG&E’s money, but disclosure forms show she owned about $100,000 worth of PG&E stock and many potentially lucrative stock options through her early months back with Brown.

During this time, she was allegedly a key part of the appointment process for new members of the state Public Utilities Commission, which regulates PG&E and other California utilities, a normal chief of staff function.

There is no evidence McFadden recused herself from utility matters. This, of course, raises the question of whether her golden handshake was really a prepayment for future services.

McFadden is now the subject of a formal complaint just filed by the Consumer Watchdog advocacy group with the state Fair Political Practices Commission, a panel very unlikely to act against the top aide to the man who appointed two of its members.

Charges in the Con-

sumer Watchdog complaint, filed under the Political Reform Act ironically sponsored by Brown during his first stint as governor in the 1970s, are sweeping and specific.

McFadden, the group said, “…us(ed) her official position to influence governmental decisions in which she knew she had a financial interest.

Her actions impacted the value of the PG&E stock options she held.”

The filing goes on to say McFadden “was Gov. Brown’s point person on utility policy, utility legislation and political appointments to the PUC.” Brown Press Secretary Evan Westrup denied all this, calling the filing against McFadden “riddled with inaccuracies.” He added “She was not vetting candidates for the PUC and did not play a role in the other decisions noted while she had the holdings referenced…” Brown did not speak about McFadden, just has he’s refused to talk about corruption allegations at the state Energy Commission and documented corruption at the PUC. But emails among the 70,000 obtained by San Bruno city officials after the 2010 PG&E gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people there indicate her old friends at PG&E believed she was involved.

In early 2011, PG&E executive Brian Cherry — now under criminal investigation along with former PUC President Michael Peevey — advised someone seeking a high PUC post via email to get help from McFadden, whom he called “the backdoor route” to getting appointed.

The pileup of ethical problems in Brown’s administration seems to grow every few weeks, with the McFadden charges merely the newest.

They join obvious conflicts of interest and exam-

ples of cronyism exercised by the Energy Commission, exposed in this column in 2014.

Add the proven collusion between Peevey and executives of Southern California Edison Co. in assessing consumers more than 70 percent of the cost of the 2012 failure of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Station, caused by an Edison blunder.

Then see Brown’s almost total indifference to the massive methane leak at a Southern California Gas Co. storage facility near Porter Ranch in Los Angeles, when his sister Kathleen draws six figures yearly as a director of SoCal’s parent company.

Her position alone should raise conflict-of-interest questions whenever Brown decides utility policy.

The Porter Ranch leak spewed more greenhouse gases than many months of driving by all the cars in the Los Angeles Basin, but Brown said little about it.

Taken together, it appears there could be a pattern of corruption at high levels of state government, and a consistent Brown practice of ignoring or condoning both corruption and safety lapses.

But other episodes don’t reach as close to him as the charges against McFadden, his close aide and adviser.

The bottom line: Brown wants to be remembered for solving California’s budget mess and aggressively fighting climate change. Right now he risks being remembered much more negatively.

According to state law, every residential property owner has a right to create an auxiliary unit on or in their land if there is space, yet current Encinitas regulations and codes make it nearly impossible to do.

Individuals have pleaded for consideration for years, but the bureaucracy has been intransigent.

The price of land and construction costs makes it impossible to build housing in Encinitas that many workers and seniors can afford to rent. At the same time, there are a great number of property owners who need cash to make ends meet. Naturally, regardless of the roadblocks the city has imposed, a thriving underground market of over an estimated 1,000 non-permitted dwelling units have already been established and more are created every year.

Surprisingly, some in new homes, right under the

noses of city plan checkers.

It appears that the time is right for an organized effort to break down the housing barriers of the past, now that the city is facing the need to located approximately 1,300 affordable housing units, it has a new city manager and planning director and there will be four council seats up for grabs in November.

I am proposing that property owners who presently have an illegal dwelling unit and those who someday wish to develop an auxiliary unit meet, establish proposed revised regulations and form a negotiating association to deal with the city. Labor unions have successfully employed this tactic for over a hundred years, why not property owners?

Because of the threat of the exposure of “illegal” activities and city retaliation, the utmost care must be exercised in becoming organized. I therefore

have asked Bob Bonde, the president of the Encinitas Taxpayers Association and proven advocate for the legalization of non-permitted Encinitas auxiliary units, to lead the movement until it can be officially organized.

Letters to the Editor Legacies motivate city councils Until a neighbor clued me in, I was thinking that the Strawberry Fields Mall, was a stand-alone project, and if approved, would have been one of the few additions to the local coastline development.

However, I was reminded that city councils are mostly motivated by only a few things: Re-election, their legacy of accomplishments, and keeping the city solvent.

Council “legacy” is what my neighborly friend was suggesting, as an overriding motivator for certain Carlsbad councilmen.

The “legacy motivation” seems to be going full bore, in both Oceanside and Carlsbad waterfronts.

I now see that both councils seem to be bent on creating big and attractive tourist destination projects, on the remaining vacant coastal properties and to milk as

much tax revenue from these developments, despite the lukewarm reception such mega projects might get from the local residents.

Therefore, I am calling out the councils for what they might be planning to allow next, in the coastline corridors.

When the Encina Power Station is razed, I predict that there will be a giant rushing “sound” to fill the empty SDG&E space with development — all with the council’s blessing.

If one looks at the Oceanside pier vicinity construction of late, Oceanside’s wish list, is not that much different from Carlsbad’s, except that Oceanside seems to love collecting parking tolls, whereas, Carlsbad does not.

You, I, and our fellow citizens should be vigilant for keeping a semblance of vintage city(s) flavor(s), as our city waterfront areas are as-

saulted, in these decades before elevated sea level, begins taking its toll.

But I was sorry to read that Tony Kranz thought Blakespear caved into “political pressure” because she listened to the community.

Shame on Kranz for thinking listening and responding to the community is a negative thing! Isn’t that what an elected official is supposed to do?

Anti-smoking advocates support bills

REGION — The recent legislation sitting on Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk could alter the landscape of smoking and vaping with its sweeping changes to state law.

However, Brown has yet to sign the bills, but advocates for the massive overhaul of the issue are hoping it will be done.

Gena Knuston, program manager at the Vista Community Clinic, said the proposals, which include raising the age to buy and consume tobacco to 21 and classify vaping as tobacco, would benefit the state and public in numerous ways.

However, men and women who are 18 and join the military would be exempt from the proposed age change.

If signed, California would become the second state to increase the age to 21. Hawaii was the first.

“It’s really exciting to see this at the state level,” said Knutson. “It’s really difficult to get significant legislation. E-cigarettes are a new product, they target youth, there are over 7,000 flavors … and they initiate youth to use these products.”

Knutson and the VCC, however, cannot and have not lobbied any legislators because they receive funds

through Prop 99, which distributes taxes to organizations such as the VCC. Brown, though, has yet to sign the legislation and Kelley said it may be a tactic to stall the tobacco companies from effectively sustaining a referendum in the general election in November.

Electronic cigarettes, meanwhile, have become a target for anti-smoking advocates with concerns over marketing to minors.

Knuston, along with Debra Kelley of the American Lung Association in San Diego, said e-cigarettes use methods such as flavoring and other tricks to lure teenagers and young adults.

One of Knuston and Kelley’s biggest concerns, however, is the health effects from e-cigarettes, traditional smoking and vaping.

Kelley said teens between 15 to 17 are at the highest risk for addiction and e-cigarettes drive those who pick up the habit to traditional cigarettes.

As a result, further health risks increase.

Yet another issue for Knuston and Kelley is the marketing of e-cigarettes on TV. Knutson said they are advertised as cessation

devices, meaning the process of quitting smoking, when there is no evidence to support such claims.

Kelley said there are also problems with the devices, as numerous reports detail how they explode causing substantial injuries.

“E-cigarettes are essentially unregulated,” Kelley said. “Our position is these products should be regulated the same way tobacco products are regulated. Although we don’t know what the long-term effects will be, there’s been enough research and evidence of concern (that) we know that these products can create lung inflammation, they can reduce the lung’s ability to protect against disease.”

As for vaping, Kelley said classifying it as a tobacco product makes sense, citing public health. She said vaping offers nicotine, which is addictive, and other issues have surfaced including inhaling metals from the coils used to generate the vapor.

Vaping advocates tout the benefits such as an easier path to quit smoking or tobacco use and being a safer alternative.

While vaping advocates state their products are 95 percent safer, Knut-

son and Kelley cast doubt on those claims.

“They consist of a battery, have a chamber where you put in the e-juice, the atomizer that heats up the device,” Knutson said. “I don’t know how you can really differentiate that a vaping device is much different than an e-cigarette.

Preliminary reports are showing they have carcinogens.”

But is furthering bans and regulating what people consume as legal products is another topic debated between the two sides.

Once a person is 18, they can join the military, vote, pay taxes and face adult charges in criminal and civil proceedings.

Supporters and some legislators say its too much government overreach.

The other side, meanwhile, state it will greatly reduce health risks and as a result, save the state millions in healthcare costs in the long term.

“Any time you are breathing a substance into your lungs, there is always going to be a chance that there is something that will harm the lungs,” Kelley said. “It’s been this drip, drip, drip of evidence that is just making our concerns about the short-term and long-term health concerns.”

LGBTQ Resource Center is a step closer to larger facility

OCEANSIDE — The North County LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) Resource Center is a step closer to moving into a larger space, after the City Council approved $137,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for renovations to the center’s future facility.

The funds will pay for infrastructure and interior walls to be added to the unfinished city-owned building on 3220 Mission Ave., which shares the site with La Mision Village Apartments and North County

Health Services.

The 2,400 square feet building is almost twice the size of the present facility, and monthly rent will be about half.

This allows more support programs and activities to be held.

“This project will double the space, and more than triple outreach and services,” Councilwoman Esther Sanchez said.

It’s been a goal of Max Disposti’s, the LGBTQ Resource Center executive director, to operate out of a larger facility and provide more services for quite awhile.

The nonprofit opened on North Coast Highway in 2011, and has since outgrown the space.

The center currently runs 22 programs. The center provides LGBTQ resources, support groups and services for elderly, youth, HIV/AIDS patients and women.

Disposti was not at the City Council meeting, but said in an earlier interview that some programs have been on hold because of lack of space at the present site. A new program to be launched at the Mission Avenue location focuses on healthy eating, and in-

cludes regular stops by a catering truck that sells nutritious meals for $2.

The resource center also received a grant to begin a program to prevent and fight human trafficking A soft opening and fundraiser for the new Mission Avenue location was held in December 2015 to announce the future move.

Awarded funds allow the move to happen.

The listed target date for facility renovations to be completed is June 30.

The council voted 4-0 to approve funds on March 16. Councilman Jack Feller abstained.

Proposed state law could harm vaping industry

REGION — A massive brawl threatening to alter an industry is ongoing after Gov. Jerry Brown called for a special session in the state legislature earlier this month.

The governor has two bills on his desk that could decimate vaping businesses and manufacturing.

Vapors are fighting a stigma of their industry.

To be clear, it is not smoking or related to tobacco.

In fact, vaping looks like smoking, but it consists of a liquid vapor brought on by juices dropped on coils inside the vaporizer.

“The politicians don’t understand it,” said Ben Farrell, co-owner of Mixed Vapes in the Carlsbad Village. “Cigarette sales have gone down, while vaping sales have gone up.”

Farrell and his colleagues, meanwhile, are fighting two fronts simultaneously as they are educating the public about the differences and taking on legislators and pharmaceutical companies.

The first will raise the age limit of buying and smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and vaping, to 21, with an exemption for active military members, while the second bill would legally consider vaping as a tobacco product.

The only four ingredients in the juices are propyler glycol, vegetable glycol, food flavoring and nicotine, which come in one of the glycol bases. Cigarettes, meanwhile, have more than 4,000 chemicals and 43 known cancer-causing compounds, according to reports.

“What vaping does, it gives you the exact sensation of smoking, it mimics it really well, without the harmful side effects,” Farrell said.

Locally, Farrell said the passage of the bills would cripple the $1 billion industry along with his 3-year-old brick and mortar shop on Roosevelt Street. Simpson said there are about 2,700 vape shops in the state.

Farrell produces seven of his own flavored juices and carries about 40 total. Those juices, he said, range from zero milliliters of nicotine to 24.

“I have personal helped hundreds of people from cigarettes to vaping,” he explained. “Not your typical people either.

We’ve helped them quit.

It’s a healthier alternative.”

The under 21 bill will not allow 18 to 20 year olds to work in the industry, whether at shops, manufacturers or distributors.

REGION — Tri-City Healthcare District board announced hiring Steve Dietlin, its former chief financial officer (CFO), as permanent CEO at a special board meeting on March 17.

The announce comes as the municipal hospital is in the process of separating from its former CEO Tim Moran who has served in the position for two years.

No national search was undertaken to find a new CEO. Board chair Jim Dagostino said the board felt it had the best candidate in house.

“We decided we could not wait,” Dagostino said.

Dietlin has worked for Tri-City for three years and as a hospital executive for 25 years.

Dagostino said he believes Dietlin is committed to the hospital, and will continue to move forward with campus development, hiring doctors, UCSD Health System partnership and ensuring financial stability without “missing a beat.”

Dagostino also praised Dietlin for his financial leadership.

“I don’t think the board wanted a philosophy change, they wanted to carry on with our plan,” Dagostino said. “Going in house in this case was the right move to do.”

Dagostino added the unanimous board decision demonstrates stability to the hospital’s new partner, UCSD. Dietlin has been

involved in cementing the partnership.

“We as a board felt it was important to make our new partner secure that the new CEO was on board with what was going on with UCSD, and was knowledgeable,” Dagostino said. “It’s a very critical time for us.

Our partner expects things to be done very soon.”

Moran has chosen to stay on as an employee through July 1.

Upon separation he will receive compensation of one year’s current salary of $525,000 and 12 months medical coverage.

Dagostino had no further comments on efforts to separate with Moran, and said it is a mutual at will decision.

Dietlin’s contract was finalized on March 18, and he immediately took the helm as CEO. Hospital administration did not share Dietlin’s new salary.

His 2014 salary as CFO is listed on Transparent California as $360,500. Moran’s 2014 salary as CEO was $253,400, less than half of his current pay.

Concurrently hospital workers are collecting signatures for a November ballot initiative to cap TriCity administrator salaries at $250,000.

Workers said news of the former CEO parting with the hospital has not slowed down efforts, but made it easier to collect signatures.

k, I’ll say it.

My husband was right.

Of course, I hate to admit it — again. I am rather glad I didn’t burn the house down, though. I’ve heard that can be such an inconvenience.

Some might say I’m impetuous. Some, like my children, might possess no restraint or diplomacy, and miss no opportunity to tell me flat-out that I may not always think things through.

I’m more the leap-now, feellike-an-idiot-later type.

I will acknowledge that I get a little help keeping my train on its track from that fellow known as my other half.

His favorite and most annoying trick is constantly proving that an ounce of caution is, as they say, worth that pound of cure.

“We ought to call a chimney sweep,” he said one day last week when it was 85

degrees outside. “I think we might need it cleaned before we use it this year.”

So in spite of the Santa Ana winds that blew, I did. It turned out the chimney was truly the least of our problems.

The astonished sweeper explained that our fireplace must be completely refurbished before it sees another flame.

Unless you perch directly in front of it, blocking the flames and heat, our fireplace offers precious little heat, but I am loath to hit that thermostat button in the winter. I want that cute, little, wood-eating decoration to earn its keep. Giving full vent to my enthusiastic nature, my fires during the past 15 years tended toward roaring. It appears I burned up my fireplace. I didn’t even know that was possible.

Not one easily chastened, I careened on toward what I saw as a perfect solution. I used to have a nice little castiron stove. It would crank out so much heat, we could be walking around in our skivvies all winter. I enthusiastically made my case to the husband and, in spite of the promise of skivvy-wearing, I was met with those measured tones I know so well. My spouse quietly but systematically, using infuriatingly excellent logic, listed all the reasons why my latest creative but impractical idea must be discarded. Tsk. He has, for years now, shown real tact in this arena.

He listens, nods and maddeningly restates his facts. Eventually, I sputter out, process the painful truth and give in. When I’m truly lost in the throes of a far-fetched idea, I might debate with him, restate my artistic vision, embellish and exaggerate for emphasis.

In spite of all that, he has never come right out and said, “Are you out of your mind? What on Earth gave you the idea that might actually be feasible?”

Instead, he is upstairs right now researching how to refurbish a fireplace. Talk about a fun do-it-yourself project. Sometimes, nothing says love like heat-resistant concrete.

H

ave you thrown in the towel on owning a lawn?

I haven’t. Though it’s been challenging to say the least in the new reality of drought restrictions and rising water rates in North County.

As a kid, there was something magical about running barefoot on soft blades of glass. I have nostalgia for those days. It’s something I want my future children to one day experience.

There’s also something visually appealing about a green sea of grass. It’s calming, and beautiful.

Maybe that viewpoint is controversial in today’s new reality of drought restrictions and water-wise public awareness campaigns.

To be clear, I’ve cut back dramatically on my home water usage — I average only $20 to $34 a month for water usage on my utility bill.

That was a tough benchmark to reach. In my backyard, I had to replace plants with succulents, ice plant and mulch. I use a timer to keep my showers down to five minutes or less. I replaced my old dishwasher and washing machine with high efficiency models.

The front lawn has struggled to survive under watering schedules that went from three times a week to once a week. But it survives.

Many of my neighbors have given up on their front lawns; succulents, mulch, and rocks have been the leading replacements. I considered replacing mine a couple years ago, when the Metropolitan Water District of Southern

California had a generous rebate program for turf replacement. I did my homework; the numbers didn’t pencil out for me.

I received surprisingly high quotes for turf removal and drought-resistant landscaping. It was going to cost significantly more than just keeping the lawn.

Some of the work I could have done on my own, but it wasn’t advised by many I spoke with who made the transition.

Owning a lawn has taught me the challenges of home ownership. It’s continuous maintenance, investment, vigilance, all leading to pride and satisfaction of a job well done.

Pulling weeds? That was my job as a kid, and I guess some things don’t change with age.

I recently aerated my lawn, fertilized it, and dropped new seed when we had the last storm pass through North County. In its current state, my lawn isn’t pretty — it’s a mix of crabgrass, dead blades and tender shoots. Still, I’m committed to making it work, no matter how long it takes. The weather won’t always be as hot and dry as it’s been the past few years, and eventually new seedlings will take root.

Worst-case scenario, I could always let the lawn go brown and buy green grass paint at Home Depot.

Still, I keep the lawn, for wetter future years.

In drought-plagued California, all of us have a responsibility to be water wise and do our part to help our communities collectively reach their state water target reductions.

It’s a balance we have to reach to keep the things we enjoy about our homes. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices and changes to keep my front lawn. How are you challenging yourself to keep the green at your home?

‘Get involved’ Huerta tells students at Palomar Staff report

SAN MARCOS — Palomar College students were in for a treat March 11, as famed labor leader and activist Dolores Huerta addressed a crowd of students at the college’s Howard Brubeck Theatre.

Huerta, 85, is best known for her activism alongside Cesar Chavez, with whom she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became United Farm Workers.

Huerta shared stories about her work alongside Chavez and others organizing California farm workers, launching the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), and lobbying effectively for the passage of legislation protecting the health and welfare of farm workers and their families.

Her efforts led to securing Aid for Dependent Families (AFDC) and the establishment of the Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, granting farm workers in California the right to collectively organize and bargain

for better wages and working conditions.

Huerta, using humor throughout her address, discussed the importance of education and advocating for children’s rights, while covering a number of issues facing people today, including women’s equality and the current political climate.

Huerta’s speech was preceded by a screening of the film “The Struggle in the Fields,” which provided historical context by documenting Huerta’s efforts, along with those of Cesar Chavez and other activists in organizing farm workers for better working conditions during the ‘60s, ‘70s and beyond.

She answered follow-up questions from audience members, encouraging people to get involved in causes relevant to them, suggesting voter registration drives and political campaigns as good places to begin.

She also referred to the act of voting as a one of the most powerful forms of nonviolent activism.

Energy, connections help to guide artists creations

ESCONDIDO — A gentle touch, hours of work and laser-like focus hovers over James Stone every day.

The Escondido resident and his wife, Carol Rogers, have found their Zen as the powers behind Stone and Glass Gallery, 1285 Simpson Way. Stone, who found his calling as an artist years ago, works diligently and delicately as a glass blower, or one who molds glass at thousands of degrees into finely shaped pieces of art.

Recently, his latest commissioned piece was put on display in the boardroom at L’Auberge Del Mar. “The picture gets merged with an idea and then you take action,” Stone said. “People come in and are hypnotized by the fire.”

His journey led him from a farm in New Jersey, through the theater and film industry in Nevada, New York and California, to New Mexico as a restaurant owner before finally becoming what he always wanted to be — a glass blower.

He became enamored with the art form in his youth, but never could seem to find the time or money to get away from the film industry after graduating from Farleigh Dickinson University.

Stone did some early glass blowing in Las Vegas and managed to start his own shop before drugs took over.

the film industry and landed in New York City.

“Before I took that turn, I did a project for the Sahara Space Center and seven chandeliers,” he said. “That was my first foray into hot glass.”

He tried to buy a gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, even leaving New York City with $30,000 and making the more than 2,000-mile trek only to find out it was sold from under him.

So, he took the cash and took over a lease on a restaurant, which he owned for seven years before moving to San Diego.

After moving to San Diego, he took classes at Palomar College and several years later, after still toiling

in the film industry, it was the words of his celebrity crush, Cher, who forced him to take action. Just like that, he hopped off the couch and made a deal for his first studio in 2001.

He was there for 14 years before moving to Escondido

last year.

“I built my studio from scratch, built all the equipment,” Stone said. “It’s just one coincidence after another that has led me here.”

About five years ago, a prophetic moment woke him to his calling, yet it also came at one of the most difficult times of his life. As he watched his mother take her last breath, she exhaled and, he said, he inhaled, taking his spirituality to another level.

Stone’s spirituality is paramount to his work, using the “energy” around him, his shop and the raging heat from his furnaces as his muse.

“It made sense to me, that we are all part of the energy and … we are all connected,” he said.

Stone’s art, though, centers on ocean life, its creatures and natural beauty.

Yet, he also creates pieces focusing on the developing crisis with the ocean’s ecosystem.

Where the Corner Frame Shop eats around town

ver since I moved to Leucadia Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had an affinity for the Corner Frame Shop and the folks that work there. The combination of the amazing location on Coast Highway that is full of warmth and charm, the

fun and engaging staff, and of course their stellar framing make it my favorite place to get that special piece framed.

In addition to all those endearing qualities, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just one of those places that is a pleasure to hang out at, and really, how many stores can you say that about?  Officially called Corner Frame Shop & Leucadia Art Gallery, they have been satisfying art, mirror and picture framing needs for more than three decades. They capture the independent and creative spirit of Leucadia perfectly and I wanted to get to know owner Morgan Mallory and his

team a little better and find out some of their favorite places to eat around town, so we caught up recently to talk food. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll start with design consultant and framer Kelli Thompson.

Kelli shares my opinion on the local food scene and put it perfectly:Â â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never been a more exciting culinary time in Leucadia, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hungry.â&#x20AC;?

For something unique, I head to Le Papagayo for crab enchiladas or salad with mangos, nuts and hearts of palm with mint vinaigrette that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m crazy about. Sometimes we order Fish 101, and one of my favorites is the three fresh ta-

ince the TASTE OF WINE release of its Top Ten Tastes of 2015, we have reviewed more than 400 wines the first few months of 2016 and found lots to cheer about. Many were from the outstanding 2012 and 2013 vintages, so the only thing I found difficult was limiting my picks to eight to fit into the space of this column.

Napa Valley again showed why it is the most prestigious wine country in the world. Half the choices were from this blessed part of California.

Although Napa Valley is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, this list shows diversity with Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as Cabernet. Price quotes are the best I could find and the list is shown alphabetically with no regard for ranking. They are all equally excellent.

Duckhorn Merlot, Napa Valley, 2012. $26.99. Dan Duckhornâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus for his winery has always been to make Merlot his

signature wine varietal, after many trips to Bordeaux France. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like the softness, the seductiveness, the color and the fact it goes with many foods so well,â&#x20AC;?he said. A slight blend of Cabernet gives it depth and structure.

Frank Family Pinot Noir, Napa Valley, 2013. $26.99. Pinot Noir is the current â&#x20AC;&#x153;Glamour Queenâ&#x20AC;? of the reds. Sometimes testy and not for all vineyards, but when done right itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sensual, lush and savory wine, with cherry/ berry and complimentary fig notes. This wine was awarded overall best wine at the most recent â&#x20AC;&#x153;East Meets Westâ&#x20AC;? Wine Challenge with 1,300 wines in competition, in Santa Rosa.

ESCONDIDO — A popular reality TV show is getting the Escondido treatment.

The inaugural of “Dancing With Our Stars” at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido has enlisted nine local “stars” for the fundraiser set for 7:30 p.m. April 2.

Comedian Dallas McLaughlin will emcee the event, while tickets run from $27 to $55 for general admission and $175 for VIP, which includes premium seating, dinner and early bidding in the silent auction.

Indian opera singer Priti Gandhi of the San Diego Opera will act as the celebrity hostess for the

VIP dinner, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the center’s education and community outreach programs.

According to Jennifer Pena, development manager for the center, the goal is sell out the 1,500-seat concert hall.

“We haven’t had a fullscale gala in a few years, and we wanted to bring one back,” Pena said. “At this point, our biggest push and focus is on ticket sales. It’s very different than selling a show because we are relying on the dancers to reach out to their contacts.”

To organize the event, Pena and her colleagues reached out to officials in Grass Valley in Northern

California. From there, the Escondido contingent was able to formulate its own plan.

All the stars were confirmed by Dec. 1, although the marketing aspect was a new challenge. Pena said this unique event brought about several obstacles in how to spread the word, along with creating more than just a dance competition.

“If you don’t know somebody or are invested in the center, it’s a difficult sell,” she added. “San Diego is a huge last-minute ticket crowd … so that’s how this is shaping up to be. Our VIP tickets are selling well.

For Yonder Mountain, the energy is still there

Adam Aijala says Yonder Mountain String Band has never been a group to plot out its career — or just about anything the group does. To hear him tell it, these guys couldn’t be calculated if they were math majors.

“That’s kind of the way we do it,” guitarist/ singer Aijala said in a recent phone interview. “It seems like from the very beginning, even our shows are like that. We don’t play the same set every night.

We’re always kind of winging it in general. I’d like in the business sense to maybe not wing it as much, but as far as the artistic side, I like that element of it.”

question in April of 2014 — after mandolin player Jeff Austin left the group — there was no clear plan for how to move forward.

Now, some two years later, Yonder Mountain has come out of that time of uncertainty smelling like a rose. Two new members have joined — mandolin player/singer Jacob Jolliff

and violinist/singer Allie Kral — and the group is moving full speed ahead, having released a new album, “Black Sheep,” last June.

“The way it all played out was not planned at all. We didn’t know what was going to happen,” Aijala said, when asked about confronting the Aus-

tin-less future. “We had some people in mind other than the people we’re playing with. And the way it worked out, I think, I really hope they (Jolliff and Kral) stick around. I love playing with them.”

Jolliff, meanwhile, was recommended for the mandolin slot by Yonder Mountain’s former manager, DJ McLaughlin.

The two new recruits stepped right into the lineup, allowing Yonder Mountain to resume its touring schedule without missing any gigs. Then the group turned its attention to the studio and making “Black Sheep.”

Fans will still recognize “Black Sheep” as the work of Yonder Mountain, even without Austin, who along with Johnston, Aijala and Kaufmann, formed the group in 1998 in Nederland, Colo. In fact, because “Black Sheep” is a largely

acoustic album without drums, it in some ways is more similar to Yonder Mountain’s first couple of albums — which introduced the group’s tuneful and energetic blend of bluegrass-rooted music and rock improvisation — than the group’s 2006 self-titled album and “The Show.”

The latter two albums were produced by Tom Rothrock (who is known for his work with rock acts like Beck, the Foo Fighters and Elliott Smith) and added a notable instrument to Yonder Mountain’s music — drums.

“I think that this album (“Black Sheep”) is more akin to ‘Elevation’ and ‘Town By Town,’” Aijala said, referring to the

His classes teach the basics of blowing glass and the delicate nature in which to handle to rod, extreme heat, coloring and more. He teaches Girl Scouts and other regional groups, including private and corporate groups.

In addition to his major pieces, Stone also produces tumblers, vases, bowls, lighting fixtures and beer glasses, which are some of his most popular work.

“I have developed this talk about creativity since my mom passed away,” he said.

“I am positive all the seeds of creativity are in the energy.”

Running to the very last mile

his fallen Angel looked for another.

Luc k i ly, Rod Carew spotted one.

“It was amazing,’’ said Carew, the Hall of Fame first baseman who played for the then-California Angels and Minnesota Twins.

“One of the paramedics had this bright light around him and he was the only one. He was my guardian angel and the last person I remember seeing, with him saying, ‘We’re losing him.’’’

Carew received a reprieve after suffering a massive heart attack. That day on Sept. 20, which had him hitting golf balls, was almost his last.

“I was near death and they brought me back to life,’’ Carew, 70, said. “It’s been unbelievable.’’

The same goes for the work done by Scripps Health.

Carew’s six-hour heart surgery was performed at the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute in La Jolla. That preceded a nearly monthlong stay at the Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas.

“Those people in Encinitas, they really pushed me,’’ Carew said, with a warm smile. “That was a big part of the entire process.

I had to learn how to walk again, and really, learn how to do everything again.’’

Carew was in North County on Tuesday, saluting those medical miracle workers that have him up and about. The sweet-swinging first baseman with seven American League batting titles and 3,053 hits was tipping his cap to those he’ll never forget.

“He had what we call the ‘widow maker,’’’ said Dr. Ajar Srivastava, who was among those treating Carew. “There was no blood flow to his heart.’’

Carew received three stents to his left anterior descending coronary artery. But he continued to

struggle with his heart function severely depressed. He was referred to the Scripps Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support team and a decision was quickly reached.

Carew was fitted with a left ventricular assist device, a battery-powered pump that is placed in the heart during surgery to facilitate blood flow. Carew’s device is connected to a lightweight battery pack that he wears in a vest.

“These are brilliant people,’’ Carew said.

Although Srivastava wasn’t so smart to know of Carew’s amazing background. In Srivastava’s native India, the sport requiring a bat is cricket.

“But I know where I come from if anyone was an 18-time All-Star, we would build him a temple and worship him,’’ Srivastava said.

He was interrupted by Carew’s cough, which Srivastava quickly discounted.

“His heart is fine,’’ he said. “That is a Florida cough.’’

As usual, Srivastava was right. But it was a cough that was a positive sign of Carew’s progress.

He just returned from two weeks at the Twins’ spring training complex in Ft. Myers, Fla. Carew was back on the field, and considering it was less than a year ago he was on his back at the golf course clubhouse, that’s as amazing as his stellar Major League career.

“God gave me another chance,’’ a grateful Carew said. “He didn’t think I had done enough work on earth yet.’’

So that man who was idolized by late Padres great Tony Gwynn is swinging again. He’s hitting everyone with a consistent message: have your heart evaluated.

Carew has already prevented someone from suffering what he did. Former Angels pitcher Clyde Wright heard Carew’s mantra.

“He saved my life,’’ Wright said.

ENCINITAS — The annual Encinitas Mile drew elite runners, novices, kids and dogs to the starting line on Vulcan Avenue March 20.

Race heats in the USATF-certified run alternated between open and elite divisions.

The kids division started the race day.

The closing race was the beloved dog mile.

In between elite men and women runners clocked in times of five minutes and under.

The race drew promising Olympic contenders and former world record holders.

Former U.S. and world mile record holder Steve Scott said it’s very unique to have a mile race as a stand alone event.

“It’s usually part of a track meet,” Scott said. “A road race is usually a 5 or 10k, or marathon.”

Most racers saw the short, intense race as a fun alternative, and good training for longer distances.

Elizabeth Staker, of Sugarloaf, California, came in first in the women’s elite division at 4 minutes, 43 seconds.

Dusty Solis, of Rancho Cucamonga, placed first in the men’s elite at 4 minutes, 12 seconds.

Solis said during the race he heard fellow runners “chomping at the bit.”

That fueled him to push himself to win.

His advice to runners who are starting out is to keep at it.

The dog mile was filled with owners and their shepherds, retrievers, and bichon frises.

Thomas Whitcomb, of Escondido, and his dog took first at 4 minutes, and 53 seconds. After the finish Whitcomb described his dog as a solo runner, and said the winning dog would be spending the rest of the day chasing squirrels and rabbits.

The dog mile challenges animal advocacy groups to a fundraising competition in which the nonprofit with the most participants is awarded the most money.

This is the race’s third

year. Many of the runners have participated since the inaugural race.

“There aren’t a whole lot of opportunities to run the mile,” Mark Sarno,

co-founder and race director, said.

The race continues to grow with 350 competing last year, and an estimated 450 this year.

Kerr focused, ready for Kia Classic

CARLSBAD — As one of the most decorated players on the LPGA Tour, Cristie Kerr has parlayed her success outside the course.

But next week, the 20year tour veteran will be focused on claiming her second consecutive title at the seventh annual Kia Classic at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. The tournament begins at 7 a.m. March 24 and runs through March 27.

Last year, Kerr won the title by two strokes over Mirim Lee with a four-day score of 20-under par.

switched clubs two weeks before her last victory, although Kerr said the change didn’t affect her game.

“I got to work on the driver and keeping in the fairway because the roughs are huge here,” she added.

“I just got to make sure my scoring clubs are really accurate.”

As for next week, she is focused on the challenging course at Aviara. While her driver is longer, she said staying out of the thick rough is paramount to keeping a low score.

But as the old cliché goes, drive for show and putt for dough. Kerr knows it will be the strength of her putter if she is to hoist the trophy for a second time.

In total, Kerr has 18 career wins including two majors, 160 top-10 finishes and

is third all-time on the LPGA career money list with more than $17 million.

“I do like this place,” she said. “The golf course is awesome and solid, it’s tough. The wind, the layout, there is always rough. You have to know the course, where to hit it, where to miss it.”

And while Kerr is focused on adding to her career wins and money earnings, she also is a model for philanthropy.

In 2002, Kerr’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she eventually beat, so Kerr started Birdies for Breast Cancer in 2003.

Her aunt and godmother also battled the disease.

Since the charity’s inception, the organization has raised more than $3 million.

In 2010, the not-for-profit partnered with Jersey City Medical Center, which created a comprehensive center specializing in women’s health issues.

Her drive for women’s health, and breast cancer, found another source of revenue in 2009, when Kerr launched Curvature Wines in partnership with Pride Mountain Vineyards.

A lover of wine, it was a natural fit for Kerr and all proceeds from the winery are donated to Birdies for Breast Cancer.

“I’ve always had a love of wines,” she said. “I was interested in doing it.”

Nonprofit wants to put military to work

CARLSBAD — There is a new addition to next week’s Kia Classic at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.

Kia has taken on an official charity partner for the 2016 tournament, one with a focus of putting military veterans into the workforce.

Hire Heroes USA, led

by CEO Brian Stann, has come on board thanks to the efforts of Kia Director of Corporate Communications Scott McKee. McKee said during the March 9 media day once he discovered the organization, research and due diligence was conducted to make sure the operation was on the level.

Many charities, especially military-focused ones, have come under fire in the past several years for shady practices.

Once Kia finished its research, they formed a partnership and offered an initial donation of $25,000 to the charity. In addition, a percentage of the ticket proceeds will also be donated to Hire Heroes USA. “About a year ago, we decided that we wanted to engage veterans,” McKee said. “Hire Heroes empowers CROPveterans, military members and their fami.93 lies to make the transition to .93 civilian life. We want to 4.17sure that all of those make 4.28 who are coming out people

of the military, who have served their country can have the best chance of success after their military service.”

Nevertheless, Hire Heroes USA boasts an impressive resume of a four-star rating for fiscal management and transparency from Charity Navigator and a gold star rating from GuideStar.

“We are so happy,” Stann said of the partnership. “I really want to congratulate Kia on a fine job of due diligence. A lot of people get into the philanthropic world and don’t necessarily do their homework. They (Kia) went many steps further to make sure that their funds were going to have a real impact on the lives of military service members and their spouses.”

The charity’s mission, though, is to assist with the transition of veterans into careers, not place-holding jobs, Stann said. The company uses a one-on-one model as its associates are dedicated to a veteran and their family helping them with resume building, interview skills and career paths.

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing the charity and the country, Stann said, is the number of military members leaving the service in the next four years since World War II. He said the total will reach more than 1 million people.

“We’ve had some downward economic momentum, which is making the transition even more difficult,” Stann explained. “They average six to nine months unemployed in that initial transition.”

The company brings in more than 360 veterans, crafting an average of 160 resumes plus 1,500 counseling sessions per week, he added. Last year, the company assisted more than 8,000, but this year will nearly double its reach to more than 15,000.

The charity has offices in San Diego, Torrance, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Raleigh, North Carolina, Dallas and Auburn, Washington. They are based in Alpharetta, Georgia.

“And that’s not to diminish the records we did with Tom (Rothrock),” the guitarist said.

“I think those records were great and they were really fun to do, and he really helped us get to a point where our only limitations in music are our musical abilities. It’s not the style or what we do with it, or what instruments we play or any of that.”

Aijala doesn’t hesitate to say Yonder Mountain is also a different band live

Farrell and Simpson, though, argue otherwise stating they check IDs and won’t even sell to parents who are trying to buy the devices in order to help get their kids quit the habit.

Ironically, vaping has become one of the most successful avenues to quit smoking, according to the two business owners.

Simpson, who owns C3 Vapors in Orange County and a former two-pack a day smoker, said hundreds of friends and associates transition to vaping and within months to one year, quit.

Yet, a big push for Brown to sign the legislation, the two men say, comes from “Big Pharma,” otherwise known as the pharmaceutical companies.

The reason, they claim, is due to vaping’s effectiveness in helping people quit combustible tobacco smoking (i.e. cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco). Big Pharma, though, produces products such as gum, patches and prescription medication to help quit the addiction.

“They were kind enough to talk us through the ropes and show us their outline,” Pena added. “We had great success in reaching out to people as ‘celeb’ dancers to the point where we even had a waiting list.”

The dancers will compete in two disciplines, Pena said, which include ballroom and freelance routines.

After confirming the dancers, Pena said the plans for the evening began to take form. A live and silent auction were added, a VIP dinner, landing McLaughlin as the emcee and securing sponsors followed.

The silent auction is slated for 6:30 p.m. and is open to all attendees, while the live auction will be af-

“It is regrettable that Mr. Romero chose to engage students in a confidential personnel matter,” read a statement from the school district. “We will make sure our students have an excellent teacher to cover his classes through the balance of the

Romero and the Vista Teachers Association did not respond to request for comment from The Coast News.

Farrell and Simpson also railed against state Sen. Mark Leno, (D) San Francisco, saying he is in the pocket of Big Pharma, noting at least eight of his top 10 political donors are pharmaceutical companies. Leno, though, is taking a page out of San Francisco’s playbook as the city recently changed its age limit to 21.
