SPRING HOME & GARDEN

Local gardening guru shares her

PASSION FOR PLANTS By Laurie Sutton

If you have a garden, you’ve most likely heard of Nan Sterman. Or seen her on TV on “A Growing Passion” on KPBS. Or read one of her columns or books. You might have even taken one of her classes. Sterman wears many hats in the local gardening community, and she is spreading the seeds of her knowledge in any and every way she can. Gardening has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember, but she didn’t plan on making a career out it. “I gardened as a kid with my grandfather,” Sterman said. “Or he mostly gardened and I rolled around in it.” When it was time to go to declare a major in college, an idea sprouted that she hadn’t expected. “I surprised myself by majoring in botany,” she said of her time at Duke University. “That background allows me to understand the world of plants differently than most people. I take a science-based approach.” Following her first graduate degree in biology from UCSB, she studied at SDSU and earned a second graduate degree in training and education development. “Understanding science and how people learn and communicate, that intersection is where I am,” she said. Her science background leads her to get to the bottom of gardening myths that many just accept as being true. “There is a lot of misinformation out there,” she said. “I always say, ‘Wait a minute, where is the research to back that up?’” She touted the wide use of Epsom salts in gardens as an example. “You definitely don’t want to use Epsom salts,” she said. “Where does that come

from? It’s a salt. And I don’t want to put salt on my soil!” While Sterman’s wealth of knowledge and experience is useful for anyone, residents can benefit her knowledge of local plants as well as experience her extensive, hands-on seeding workshops. “I spend two-and-a-half hours starting with how to read a seed packet and how to know what to plant and when,” she said. “They literally plant their entire garden and take it home with them.” As we enter spring, Sterman has specific tips for gardeners. “The first rule of thumb, when it comes to edibles is that spring is the second season for planting,” she said. “You really want to plant in fall for ornamentals. If you

miss that window, spring is the second season.” Generally, if you eat the leaves and the stems, she said that is a plant you grow in cool weather — fall, winter or early spring. “If you eat the fruit, you want to grow that for the summer harvest,” she said. “Peppers and tomatoes are technically fruits, as they have seeds. Cucumbers, squash, melons — all TURN TO GARDENING GURU ON B4

those things. Except for beans and peas, which do better into late spring and early fall.” Sterman also said that spring is a great time to check your irrigation system. “If you have not yet converted to an inline drip system, this is the tim e to do it,” she said. “The emitters are in the tubing instead of around the garden. You want to apply a thick layer of mulch, 3 inches minimum.” This is especially important for the summer, when we have to be more careful about managing water. “Mulch is the best way to do that,” Sterman said. “Mulch is like an insulating blanket. When you have moisture in the soil, the water stays in the

SPRING HOME & GARDEN soil instead of evaporating into the atmosphere.” When it comes to inline drip systems, Sterman has plenty to say as to why it is the sensible choice for irrigation. “It is the most foolproof and efficient of the kinds of irrigation you can use,” she said. “You want to put down that irrigation, and mulch over it. You want the irrigation on the surface of the soil, the mulch over it and when you water let it run a really long time because the best, strongest way for plants to grow is through their roots. You want water to go down a foot or more.” She urges gardeners to reconsider using sprinklers. “You don’t want to turn on the sprinklers for five minutes a day,” she said. “Irrigate once a week or month, depending on whether the

roots are established.” She said that people tend to overwater, and that overhead sprinklers are, well, inane. “They make no sense,” she said. Plants need water in the soil. The roots are what use water. They pull from soil and circulate up into the plant. We need water in the soil, but we spray it in the air. What we really need it to put water in the soil. That’s why I’m proponent of inline drip irrigation.” Just how long does it take for roots to establish? “It’s like when you move to a new neighborhood, you have to adjust,” she said. “Kids adjust faster, and small plants adjust faster than big plants to being planted.” And while the roots are being established, they need extra care. “While the roots are estab-

lishing you want to water more often, not for longer periods. Once established, you can cut back.” Asking a plant person of Sterman’s caliber about her favorite plants is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. But she is a big fan of the pineapple guava, which does very well locally. “This is an edible, permanent plant with a wonderful big shrub with cool flowers of pink and red,” she said of the plant, which is not a true guava. “The petals are sweet; you can pick them off gently to decorate a dessert. It’s one of those plants that every family with little kids should have. The fruits are so cool, and kids have fun picking them up off the ground and eating them.” Not all plants are loved equally, and flowering

MARCH 2016 shrubs are one category Sterman considers underrated. “People think of flowers, they think of annuals or perennials,” she said. “Flowering shrubs are a great constant solid background that keep the garden looking good while other things come and go.” Two of her favorites are the Australian and South African shrubs. “Grevillea shrubs can be as tall as 15 feet or 1 foot tall and really wide,” she said. “They make wonderful, curled flowers and the hummingbirds go crazy for them. They bloom primarily in the fall and spring and have a great texture even when they aren’t blooming.” Leucospermum, or pincushion, shrubs from South Africa also top her list. “They make flowers that are baseball to softball size and they look like a pincushion,” she said. “They have shades of yellow, parts are red, parts are pinkish — all different color combos.” These bloom from January through March or April. They have wider leaves, and Sterman suggests they make a great hedge. “They make great screens if you

want to hide trash cans or ugly views,” she said. Sterman has other helpful tips for making the best of what you have. “Plant edibles in raised beds or big pots,” she said. “Growing plants, especially for edibles, you have to have big pots. As big as you can get. You can fill a pot with whichever soil you choose. You can water all you want, and use all the rich fertilizer. Sterman also advises to make sure you’re getting gardening advice that applies to the region in which we live. “We have a Mediterranean climate,” she said. “We don’t get our rainfall in the summer. Every other type of gardening region in the world rains when it’s warm, so you have completely different plants, you do things differently, the soils are entirely different. You have to garden where you live.” Sterman has two upcoming seeding workshops one March 26 and another April 2. To learn more about her upcoming events, projects and appearances, visit her website at plantsoup.com.

Learn to lose the lawn REGION — Courses are now available throughout San Diego County to learn how to design a sustainable landscape, made possible by funding from state Proposition 84. A series of in-depth trainings is offered for homeowners and professional landscapers, including Hands-On Turf Removal Workshops and Design Seminars. These trainings run through June. A rebate will begin in May of $1.75-persquare-foot of lawn removed and turned into a watershed approach-based landscape. The next training will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 19 in Oceanside. March 24, the

class will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in San Marcos, with future classes in Encinitas and Vista. Housing market watching for increase in activity The primary story, both nationally and in local submarkets, is a dwindling months’ supply of inventory. The cure, of course, is more inventory. But new construction has been lagging during this opportune moment, and sellers of existing homes are not yet hitting the market in droves. The heart of the selling season has yet to begin, so we’re still optimistically watching for an increase in activity in the coming months.

Closed Sales decreased 18 percent for detached homes and 2.7 percent for attached homes in North San Diego County. Pending sales increased 5 percent for detached homes and 26.8 percent for attached homes. The North San Diego County Median Sales Price was up 4.3 percent to $579,000 for detached homes and 5.7 percent to $370,000 for attached homes. Days on Market de-

creased 13 percent for detached homes and 29.8 percent for attached homes. Supply decreased 22.6 percent for detached homes and 39.1 percent for attached homes. National housing starts were up by 10.8 percent at the end of 2015 when compared to 2014, and the unemployment rate is holding low and steady at or near 4.9 percent. Meanwhile, mortgage rates continue to astound below 4 percent and we have witnessed

an unprecedented 70 consecutive months of private-sector job growth, although wages are flat. As consumers navigate their options, competition for the best available properties should be profound, especially if the market remains hobbled by a lack of supply. Housing statistics are provided courtesy of the North San Diego County Association of REALTORS®. For additional information, call (760) 7343971 or visit nsdcar.com.

“I build relationships with people. I get to share their ideas and dreams through furniture,” says Brian Murphy of Murphy’s Fine Woodworking. Courtesy photo

Local woodworker builds fine, functional furniture ESCONDIDO — Brian Murphy is one of the lucky ones. He makes a living doing what he truly loves, and it shows not just in the furniture he has created, but in the relationships he has built with his customers as well. Murphy’s Fine Woodworking was born out of true passion more than 20 years ago. His pieces have not only achieved national recognition, but locally there is no finer choice for beautiful yet functional fine custom wood furniture. Murphy is basically a one-man shop, which means when you order a piece from him you are working directly with the artist craftsman himself. His Bow Arm Morris Chairs are renowned, and he is understandably proud of them. “The chairs are so much fun to build and they have so much personality,” he said. “I make artful chairs that people can actually sit in,” he added. “You can sit down, watch football and have pizza and a beer, or you can read a book and relax and fall asleep in them.” Murphy’s pieces aren’t mass-produced. Each is a work of art in its own right. “I passionately enjoy what I do,” he said. “I leave a little bit of me in every piece of furniture I make. It’s important to me as an artist, to be able to become part of somebody’s house.” Customers of Murphy’s Fine Woodworking are not investing in a piece of furniture that they will end up replacing in a few years. His furniture is carefully crafted with attention to detail and a passion that comes through with every finished product. One recent project Murphy did was to furnish a house in Valley Center with

24 custom pieces. “This was accomplished in just 10 months,” Murphy said. You can also find his love seat and table with Italian leather in the San Diego Natural History Museum. Current projects include a large TV center and he recently completed a presentation box for a Wyoming Freedom Gun, a rare firearm of which only 500 were made. Also a local lawyer outfitted her office with a

conference table and buffet Murphy crafted with book matched walnut. A hidden walk-in wine storage unit that holds 500 bottles of wine was also just finished. Although his projects can vary in scope and size, Murphy consistently finds that his customers end up coming back for more. “I do a lot of multiple pieces,” Murphy said. “Once you build something for somebody they usually end up wanting more pieces. I build relationships with people. I get to share their ideas and dreams through furniture and when it comes into reality people are so happy to see their creative ideas delivered to them!” To view Murphy’s Fine Woodworking pieces and learn more, visit murphysfinewoodwork ing.com. You get what you pay for – The ‘Value Proposition’

What does value mean to you? Is it price, service or convenience? Big Box stores may appear to offer the lowest prices on seemingly the same products as many traditional retail outlets but are you really getting a good deal? Is price always a determining factor of value? It may look great in the store, but is it exactly what you wanted? That $250 dining set may seem like a good deal until the first rain or windstorm and then you’re fishing pieces out of your neighbor’s tree and wondering how you can get the furniture repaired. Most Big Box and home improvement centers typically will not accept the merchandise back, leaving you with outdoor furniture that will more than likely last you one to two years due to poor quality, fading of the fabrics and finishes or rusting of the structure. Big Box stores stock only very limited colors, fabrics and styles. Delivery, setup and disposal of packaging and old furniture are your responsibility as is any warranty claims that may arise. Where is the value proposition in that? Traditional outdoor retailers offer service on a whole new level. When you shop with us, you get a friendly, knowledgeable staff member who is well versed in the products they sell. We can offer you virtually endless possibilities of colors, fabrics and styles,

all chosen by you. You can sit, touch and probe the merchandise and feel the difference in quality. When it comes to delivery, we offer white glove delivery and setup with trash removal. Your furniture will look just as you designed it and will last for years. Many of the manufacturers we offer carry the best warranties in the industry, such as a 15 year limited warranty against defects for residential consumers on frames, finishes and vinyl strapping. With a warranty like this, it is evident that the furniture is designed to stand the test of time, especially in the Southern California area. Customers have been coming California Patio for over 35 years for a variety of reasons — foremost being the “Value Proposition.” Many of our customers are looking to create that ultimate outdoor sanctuary as an extension of their indoor décor to complement their lifestyles. We offer sound advice, competitive pricing and peace of mind that your furniture will last. We guarantee you will notice the difference and will be happy with your purchases just as many thousands of customers have for over three decades. How safe is your paint? REGION — Choosing the right paint for your home, office or commercial space is a decision you should make carefully. Of course you are aware of how important the quality and color are to your project. Even more important, however, is something you might not be aware of. Some paint companies still make products that are considered toxic. Luckily for you, Dunn Edwards takes all of this into consideration so you can be confident that you can choose their products as the safest choice for quality and for your health. Ethylene glycol (EG) is a solvent used in many latex paints, and it is listed as a Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) under state and federal regulations. A colorless, odorless liquid, EG and its vapors can be toxic to humans. Exposure may cause irritation to skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs, and allergic reactions are possible. Overexposure to EG may lead to nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and respiratory impairment. Repeated overexposure can permanently damage the liver and kidneys. While the harmful effects of EG have been wellknown for decades, most paint companies continue to use this harmful substance despite the proven hazard it presents to people

Our declining bee population: What’s all the buzz about? though classified as herbicides, render bees helpless. McDonald said it doesn’t kill them directly, but kills the microbes inside of them that are crucial for their digestion and ultimately their survival.

B

By Laurie Sutton

ees have been making national headlines in recent years. As the bee population continues its decline, many of us sit back and scratch our heads. We read the news stories and wonder exactly what happened and what we can do about it. One resident, James McDonald, owner of Encinitas Bee Company, is taking action. And he urges all of us to join him in solving what he says is a problem that is 100 percent fixable and preventable.

What’s killing the bees? The declining bee population is a direct result of three specific factors, according to McDonald. “What’s killing the bees?” McDonald asked. “Chemicals. That’s the No. 1 thing.” He said the “mystery of the dying bee” is a big spin that the companies that produce these chemicals have promoted. The chemicals in systemic pesticides that are so widely used are causing bees to have weak immune systems, and viruses that shouldn’t be killing them are, he said. He added that there is no mystery as the lobbyists behind these chemical manufacturers would have you believe. “Pesticides kill bugs, the bee is a bug,” he said. McDonald cited a recent EPA study which he said declared that systemic pesticides are in fact killing the bees. He also said that Encinitas is in the 90th percentile of California cities for the amount of pesticides it uses. That is something he is working tirelessly to change. The second largest contributing factor to the bee decline is habitat loss, McDonald said. This habitat loss is due to both the overdevelopment of land and the overwhelming use of pesticides in both public and private outdoor areas. This leaves the bees with a precious few options for pollination. While beekeepers everywhere are breeding more and more bees, the amount of bees they breed can’t be enough to make up for the losses. “The bees are dying at a rate that is just unreal,” McDonald said. And it isn’t just the quanti-

ty that is unsustainable, it’s the quality of the bees being bred. According to McDonald, the breeding of these weaker bees is the third contributing factor to the overall decline of the bee population. “They have to get some new blood in there,” he said of the breeders. He pointed to Brazilian scientist Warrick Kerr’s work with African killer bees and honey bees as an example. “The killer bees are stronger and tougher,” he said. “We need to breed them with the honey bee to get a calm strain of killer bee. Retain their hardiness, and lose their aggressiveness.” A stronger bee, he said, would be able to survive the elements of the ecosystem. Instead of chemicals killing the bees, “we need to let natural selection kill off the weak bees.” What does this mean for us? Pollinator plants are an important part of our ecosystem, more important than many people realize according to McDonald. He said that it isn’t just our plants that make fruit that survive off of pollination, it’s also the animals that depend on those foods that are affected. As for the chemicals being used and their effects, McDonald said the bees are just the canary in the coalmine. “The bees are just sensitive,” he said. “The bees are the ones going first, but it’s affecting all of us.” Autism and cancer are both more prevalent now than ever and McDonald points out that many people believe that chemicals are responsible. Roundup: A commonplace killer? It is vital that we get the chemicals out of our environment if we want to save the bees, McDonald said. He pointed to the common household gardening product glyphosate, sold under the brand name Roundup among others, which is a systemic herbicide used to kill weeds. Thanks to the efforts of McDonald and other like him, the city of Encinitas no longer uses the products which has been linked to cancer and has recently been declared a carcinogen by the EPA. Products like these,

What can we do? The first step is to get rid of the chemicals, McDonald said. This is as easy as filling our yards and parks with plants that don’t require any special chemicals to survive. “We live in a desert, we should be planting desert plants,” McDonald said. “Planting succulents is so important,” he said. “They are great pollinator plants that require no chemicals. Any systemic pesticide that goes into the ground is going to be sucked up by the plants and expressed in the nectar and pollen.” McDonald said we need to let natural selection kill the delicate plants. “The plants that are meant to be here thrive,” he said. For examples of drought-resistant plants that don’t need chemicals, McDonald referred to the Encinitas Community Park, which features rosemary, thyme and sage among others. Jeff Harms of the San Diego Beekeeping Society knows a thing or two about what we should be planting to save our bees. He worked on a pollination garden in Balboa Park using a variety of pollinating plants native to San Diego. “In the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, San Diego was known as the honey capital of the world. Harbison Canyon produced a lot of honey based on the great native coastal sage. The local native plants are great planting for that.” The positive effects of planting varieties like this are threefold. Not only can we increase the amount of

great pollinator plants for our bees and save water, there are many plants that bloom all year. “Doesn’t everyone want a garden that always has flowers?” McDonald asked. Another step residents can take is to provide more

environments for bees to thrive. McDonald quoted one scientist and beekeeper who said the best way to prevent habitat loss is to outlaw cement. While not viable option in reality, there are ways to increase the available habitat for bees. While

having a bee hive isn’t an option for many, tiny bee houses for native bees can be. Mim Michelove, a founder and administrator with Ocean Knoll Farm in TURN TO BEES ON B17

Tips for an abundant summer harvest from Coastal Roots Farm

he farmers at Coastal Roots Farm are excited and honored to be participating in the upcoming San Diego Botanical Garden Spring Planting Jubilee & Tomato Sale March 19 and March 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At Coastal Roots Farm, we seed, we grow, and we share. We seed new ideas around sustainable farming and Jewish life; we grow healthy food; and we share the harvest with our local community. Coastal Roots Farm will be selling a wide variety of vegetable starts as well as flowers and fruit trees, including the beloved Etrog. Citrus medica “Etrog” is the kosher cit-

ron used in the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, prized for its extraordinary fragrance; fully kosher specimens such as these are quite rare. We will also have a limited supply of a unique edible perennial plant called Yacón, which makes a crisp, sweet tuber similar in taste to jicama. Between now and the plant sale there are some things you can do in your garden to prepare. First and foremost, give your soil the love it deserves. If you are planting into an existing bed now may be a good time to take a soil test so you can see what your soil needs to be healthy and balanced. planting bed, mix them up and send off to a lab. Tests can cost $10 to $25 from your local university extension office or a lab such as A&L laboratories. The soil test will help you understand what you need to do, if anything, to balance your soil PH and what amendments (lime, gypsum, etc.) and how much are needed to grow a healthy crop. Don’t let the science deter or discourage you. A simple approach is to add some fresh organic compost from your compost pile or sourced from a local garden center as well as some organic granular fertilizer. Make sure you use compost that has been properly broken down to avoid any weeds or diseases. You can follow the

At the plant sale we will be demonstrating techniques for transplanting, pruning suckers, watering, fertilizing,

trellising and more. Transplanting is best done in cloudy weather, early in the morning or after the sun has peaked in the afternoon to avoid heat stress to the plant. Water generously at transplanting, ideally with a compost tea and/ or diluted kelp, to help the roots acclimate to their new home. Remember to install your tomato trellis long before the vines begin to get unwieldy, and use something very strong to hold up the weight of your hopefully fruit-laden tomato plants.

A refreshing take on water filtration for your home and business REGION — Superior Water is more than just the name of the business, it’s also what they deliver to their customers. Their mission is to provide home owners with great tasting, smooth feeling and odor-free water from every tap in the house. So how do they do it? With a water filtration system installed on the main water line, that helps to provide filtered, conditioned water from every tap in your home. Not only can their satisfied customers vouch for Superior Water’s patented technology, but scientific research also supports the research. “As a research scientist with 30 years’ experience in the use of high purity water for medical research purposes, it is truly refreshing to also

find a consumer product that is technically sound and actually does what it claims,” Allan D. Provost, Ph.D and president of Health Screen Laboratories, Inc. said. Even more important than the taste of the water you drink, or the water you use to shower or bathe in, is to consider just how safe it really

is. “Our customers are very educated nowadays and they want an environmentally safe water solution that also protects the pipes in their homes,” Elaine Montemarano, general manager for Superior Water, said. “Salt softeners are becoming obsolete because of the harmful chemicals that are put into our homes and envi-

ronment. Our filtration system is all natural and great for the plants and pets. It provides fresh water the way it was meant to be while filtering out the unwanted impurities, both natural and man-made.” “We provide a proven product that gives people the gift of better water,” Ted Carlisi said. The company uses Multi-Reversing Fields technology to realign water’s calcium and magnesium so that minerals stay in suspension — instead of creating a hard water white mineral crust familiar to most home owners. Whether you’re considering a filtration system for your home, condo, office or commercial facility, Superior Water offers the award-winning three-stage carbon filtration,

internal sediment filter and bacteria static filter process. Once the water is completely filtered, it is conditioned through an industrial 4th stage module, which is what truly sets it apart from other systems. The end result is a superior quality of water that tastes great, healthy for the skin and reduces hard water problems. The same peace of mind customers get with Superior Water’s product extends to after the company installs the product. “We offer our customers a worry free warranty with a sevenday/24-hour customer support hotline,” Peter Carlisi said. “Customer service is our first priority.” For more information, visit superiorwater.com or call (800)-WATERBOY.

SAN MARCOS — As families, we just aren’t connecting like we used to. Even when we’re all in the same room together, everyone is using their smartphones, tablets and laptops. We might be connected online, but we’ve moved farther and farther away from connecting in person with the most important people in our lives — our families. Darrell Meddings, owner of Billiards & Barstools, knows how to fix this problem. “The family that plays together, stays together, I always say,” he said. Located in San Marcos, Billiards & Barstools carries a full line of high-end products aimed at bringing the fun and interaction back to family time. “We carry foosball tables, air hockey tables, shuffle board tables, ping pong tables, and of course, pool tables,” Meddings said. “Kids these days are into their devices,” he said. “They aren’t talking to each other, they aren’t communicating.” Things are a little different in the Meddings family. “When my grandkids come over, they’re playing pool and ping pong, and they’re talking,” he said. Rather than trying to force family time onto kids

who would much rather be hooked up to their electronics, Meddings suggests any one or combination of the top-quality products at his store will make spending time with family more enjoyable for everyone. A recent customer came in with his wife to purchase a pool table, and his wife told Meddings, “Oh I won’t be playing pool.” The man came back later and told Meddings that not only was she playing pool, she was playing it all the time with her son and loving it. These are the types of stories the staff at Billiards & Barstools hear time and time again. Anyone concerned with the commitment involved with buying a pool table will be pleased to learn that it can also be converted into a dining table or a ping pong table. Additionally, there are outdoor game tables available that work well in our Southern California climate since we’re outside for

much of the year. Billiards & Barstools offers Internet price matching for their top-quality merchandise, and they also have professionals to help you maintain your pool tables. “I’ve been in business since 1989,” Meddings said. “We offer high-end products and professional service work. But what we really offer is quality family time.” When you stop by, don’t be surprised to meet Meddings on the sales floor.

He takes pride in his business and being accessible. “I’m not one of those hidein-the-back owners,” he said with a laugh. Billiards & Barstools is located at 330 Rancheros Drive in San Marcos. They are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the game tables, furniture and accessories available, call (760) 471-9208 or visit billiardsandbarstools.com.

Community gardens blooming with benefits

he concept of community gardens is not a new one, yet they are becoming increasingly important as the land around us becomes more densely developed. Community gardens in North County vary in scope and size, but the common ground is that they bring people together with goal of uniting nature and humanity, and offering residents their own place to grow plants. Patrice Smerdu is a name Carlsbad residents recognize. She is the spokeswoman for the Harold Smerdu Community Garden, which her late father

was instrumental in bringing to life. “It was probably 1983, and my dad was having coffee with the mayor and mentioned he had a friend willing to donate land to the city, but the criteria was that nothing could be built on it,” Patrice Smerdu said. “My dad campaigned for a community garden. Land values were going up and people didn’t have room to grow, they had smaller yards.” Six months after that coffee date, the city had put in a watering system and the garden was on its way. The garden is one of the oldest in the county now. “It wasn’t popular at first, but now we have a three- to fouryear waiting list and 52 plots,”

she said. Today, the garden thrives and the Smerdus are proud of the benefits to the community. “It offers a sense of community, camaraderie and exercise,” Patrice Smerdu said. “It is multigenerational and it fits the bill for a lot of the goals the city has for its residents. “We do a lot of community outreach to show the garden’s value,” Patrice Smerdu said. One of the ways word about the Harold Smerdu Community Garden is spread is through some of the city’s younger residents, namely the third-graders. “We host third-graders from Carlsbad for their CityStuff program.

About 600 to 700 third-graders come through each year in groups of 25 to 30 for a scavenger hunt and they get a little gift when they leave.” A donation from the Jenny Craig Foundation five years ago in support of healthy eating has enabled the garden to continue to grow. One perk to gardeners is they have access to many tools, including wheelbarrows enabling people to come garden on their lunch break or their way home from work. Patrice Smerdu hopes to get more local businesses involved as well. “For Carlsbad, it’s made a difference, meeting with city leaders, letting them get a big-

ger picture of the importance of community gardens,” she said. Patrice Smerdu encourages anyone who is interested to come by and take a look. “We love visitors,” she said. Lisa Roop is a board member with the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative, which serves as a support and advocacy group for all community gardens in Carlsbad. “Beyond our general educational/ advocacy work, we assist the city’s gardens by maintaining the waiting list for residents who are interested in obtaining plots, hosting a bimonthly eduTURN TO GARDENS ON B17

is a very rewarding way to connect with the natural environment and gardening is one of the best intergenerational recreational activities there is. People of all ages enjoy gardening.” Roop is excited that a third Carlsbad community garden is in the works, which will be located in Pine Park. “The new gar-

den is to offer approximately 30 raised beds, a composting area and a shade/ seating area,” she said. “A portion of the beds are to be designated for teaching gardening classes and offering intergenerational gardening activities for community groups,” she added of the garden which is estimated to be completed early next

year. Encinitas is home to the Ocean Knoll Farm, which serves students and the community by growing food for the school lunch program at all nine of its schools. Mim Michelove and Camille Sowinski are the founders of Healthy Day Partners, which was formed “with the mission

of improving community health through education,” Michelove said. The partnership developed, built and has managed the Ocean Knoll Farm for the past four years. Michelove was an Ocean Knoll parent who brought her devotion to innovative garden education and community commitment to the 1-acre farm project. In addition to growing food, the farm also supports multidisciplinary outdoor education. “We incorporate global themes that have local impact,” Michelove said. Themes include water conservation, the role of plastic in the environment, civic participation and social responsibility. While Healthy Day Partners funds the majority of the Ocean Knoll Farm, the Encinitas Union School District helps as well. “EUSD has supported the program from its inception by helping to clear out the land, installing and maintaining the irrigation system and facilitating other school site related issues,” Michelove said. “During school hours,

native bees. “The plan is to take the many homes that EUSD students create and combine them to build a bee hotel,” she said. “This kind of experiential education uses the natural world as a backdrop for hands-on science lessons and also empowers kids to make a meaningful contribution

to the process of growing food for their community.” Many in Encinitas are taking great strides to get our ecosystem back on track. McDonald has partnered with Cheryl Konn of Quail Flower Barn to create a bee and plant sanctuary located at 501 Quail Gardens Drive. They

sell what McDonald calls a “health concoction” of honey, lemon, turmeric and cinnamon as well as pollinator plants. McDonald’s work is hardly done, as he continues to join efforts with like-minded citizens and city officials. “We are getting the pesticides and her-

bicides out of our land, and we’re going after the private sector next,” he said. The solution, according to McDonald, is simple. “Avoid chemicals, put out bee houses, and plant drought-resistant plants,” he said. “If everyone followed these rules, the environment would be a

cational booth at the State Street Farmers Market and holding donated funds which help support the gardens. “The city’s second public community garden, the Calavera Schoolhouse Community Garden, opened in May 2014,” Roop said. “The garden’s development resulted from a partnership between the city of Carlsbad Department of Parks and Recreation, the CCGC and a generous grant from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (awarded to the CCGC) as well as hours of volunteer assistance from a variety of community groups.” Roop echoed Patrice Smerdu’s sentiments on the importance of community gardens. “Community gardens offer a great place to learn and share notes about gardening,” she said. “I think they are essential in all communities, especially for those who don’t have space to garden because they live in areas with no available yard space. the farm functions as an outdoor extension of the classroom for Ocean Knoll students,” she said. When school isn’t in session, Health Day Partners has worked with community partners such as Jimbo’s, Simply Organic, Chipotle and others to build 85 raised garden beds, a 50-tree community food forest (the first of its kind in Encinitas), a large stage, a chicken coop, greenhouse made of plastic trash, to name a few. “The Ocean Knoll Farm has always used and taught organic growing methods,” Michelove said. “It is registered with the state as an organic farm and will soon receive organic certification.” The benefits of our community gardens are spread far and wide. Bringing residents together, working toward common goals and educating and beautifying our cities are certainly among them. Level Fifteen raises the bar for residential living Zephyr’s Level Fifteen is a new community of 63 townhomes nestled in the coastal hills of North County between San Marcos and Escondido. Courtesy photo

“I

was in the market for almost six m o n t h s , searching for a home to purchase,” said Mafaye Claveria, a first-time buyer who purchased her Level Fifteen townhome three months ago. “I’m grateful the real estate agent I was working with who introduced me to the community because it had everything I was looking for, and I’m very picky!” Now selling Phase 3C and ready for move-ins in May 2016, Zephyr’s Level Fifteen is a new community of 63 townhomes nestled in the coastal hills of North County between San Marcos and Escondido. Claveria, a nurse who works night shifts, recalls having experienced multiple setbacks along the way, while searching for her perfect home.

But she says making the decision to purchase at Level Fifteen was easy, given the excellent customer service she received, and the homes exceeded her expectations. “On our site visit, I met Level Fifteen’s Sales Manager Marcie Cole,” said Claveria. “She was very professional and able to answer all the questions I had, which made it easy to decide on the spot to purchase a home.” Claveria says her buying experience, from start to finish, was truly pleasurable. “I can’t say enough good things about the superb customer service Marcie and the Level Fifteen team provided. From day one, until the day I received my house key, and even still today, the team has been great as I get to know my new community.” Level Fifteen’s location was a draw for Claveria, who says it makes her commute to work very

convenient, while still being private. She also loves that Nordahl Marketplace is just a short stroll away, with more than 25 retailers and dining options, ranging from Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine, to sushi, burgers and more. Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens is also nearby, with 36 craft and specialty beers on tap, in addition to an extensive wine list. The layouts of the homes have been ideal for Claveria, who enjoys entertaining. “In my culture, we love to cook meals for our family and friends, as a way to entertain and show we care,” she says. “I love how spacious the kitchen, dining and living areas are — it’s been perfect for accommodating our gatherings.” Since moving in, Claveria has already hosted three parties for her family and friends, many of who have complimented her

home’s stunning features and floorplan. “It was a huge bonus being able to choose the flooring and backsplashes according to my style,” says Claveria, who loved the homes so much that she referred her brother-in-law, Jasper, who also bought a townhome in the community. Available in three floor plans that range from 1,690 to 1,918 square feet, the homes have three to four bedrooms, two and a half baths, and large, attached twoand three-car garages. All residences feature modern finishes, large kitchen islands with granite countertops, and private patios and balconies – perfect for relaxing and entertaining. Spacious walk-in closets are included in every master suite, and additional features include recessed lighting and cultured marble countertops with integrated sinks. And environmen-

tally-conscience homeowners will appreciate the residences’ energy-efficient windows, low-flow toilets and shower heads, and temperature-balancing shower valves. Level Fifteen’s prime location has convenient access to employment centers in Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, San Marcos and Temecula, and is close to the Sprinter commuter train. Pricing starts at $416,990, and a $5,000.00 lender incentive is now being offered to offset closing costs. Three new model homes are open for viewing at the Level Fifteen sales center, open Monday, noon to 5 p.m., and Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 1310 Montiel Rd., Escondido, and can be reached at (858) 342-3560.
