The Council’s 4-1 vote reverses its decision in MayRANCHO 2015, when the body voted 3-2 to have the trail SFNEWS run along the east side of the rail tracks along San Elijo Avenue and an undeveloped section of the coastal plain that is a popular walking and jogging path. Originally, council members Lisa Shaffer, Catherine Blakespear and Tony Kranz supported the San Elijo alignment. But Blakespear requested at the March 16 meeting that the council reconsider its support of the current configuration. On Wednesday night, Shaffer was the only council member to cast a vote opposing the change. The previous decision has come under intense criticism from a large faction of Cardiff residents, who believe the trail is not right for the coastal community. Dozens of those opponents packed the Encinitas City Council chambers Wednesday night in an effort to convince the council to recon-

Sea wall permit approved for fragile Solana Beach bluff By Bianca Kaplanek

SOLANA BEACH — After experts confirmed that two cliff-top homes are in imminent danger of falling onto a heavily used beach and into the Pacific Ocean, council members at the March 23 meeting approved permits to build a sea wall to protect the structures and the public. The houses sit a few yards from the edge of a fragile bluff above Tide Beach Park and a popular nearby surf spot in the north end of the city. David and Sherry Winkler bought their home on Pacific Avenue in 2001 and moved in two years later.
