HIGH NOTES

OCEANSIDE — A heated discussion led up to a 3-2 council vote approving a oneyear extension to the Waste Management trash-hauling contract with the city on July 1. Speakers questioned whether the approval was legal, as it bypassed public input and recommendations from Integrated Waste Commission, which works year-round to review city waste management issues. “I’m very upset at being on this dais,” Mayor Jim Wood said. “This is unbelievable that the acts on the largest (city) contract circumvented public input. The rest of the waste providers can say they’ve been left out.” Wood and Sanchez voted against adding a year to the present 12-year, multimilliondollar contract with Waste

La Paloma shows SoCal premiere of film By Promise Yee

ENCINITAS — La Paloma Theater showed the Southern California premier of “Dear and Yonder,” a unique documentary film about women who surf and their personal connection to the ocean, July 2. “We tried to avoid comparing it to men’s surfing,” filmmaker Tiffany Campbell said. “Women are doing something different that’s amazing and they’re open to telling their stories.” The film begins with a brief history of women’s surfing, starting with 1778 Hawaiian surfing, the 1956 story of Gidget, and moving on to 1998 surfing legend Lisa Andersen and present day professional surfer Kassia Meador. Linda Benson, winner of the U.S. Championship in Huntington Beach in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1964 and 1968, recalls how women have gained a respected presence in the sport of surfing. “The turning point came in 1998, with board shorts and Lisa Andersen,” Benson said. “We really had something of our own.” While there were few

COAST CITIES — A total of 21 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on North Countyarea freeways and rural roads over the Fourth of July weekend, three more than last year, a Highway Patrol spokesperson said July 6. Despite the slight rise in DUI arrests by the California Highway Patrol in the North County, there were no traffic fatalities on CHP-monitored roadways during the holiday weekend throughout the San Diego-area, Officer Eric Newbury said. Countywide, the CHP made 88 DUI arrests, 66 fewer than last year, according to the Highway Patrol. In addition to the Highway Patrol’s maximum enforcement period, which ran from 6 p.m. July 3 through midnight July 5 and assigned 80 percent of its available officers to local regions freeways and unincorporated roads, North County law enforcement agencies also staffed
