CARLSBAD — City Council unanimously approved the future construction of a Legoland hotel at its Oct. 27 meeting. The proposed 254-room hotel will be built to compliment the already existing and very successful Legoland theme park in Carlsbad. The project will be constructed right next to the park and will utilize its rarely used RV lot for hotel guest parking. Carlsbad’s Senior Planner Van Lynch described a serpentine-shaped building that creates a U-shape around the pool. The shape will provide coverage for the pool and help cut energy costs by blocking many of the windows from direct midday sunlight. The colorful and unique

The vote to spend up to approximately $1.5 million on the planning, design and demolition effort is the first step to implement the park’s master plan. A Hall property team consisting of staff members from various city departments will work closely with San Juan Capistrano-based RJM Design Group according to Parks and Recreation Director Chris Hazeltine. Mayor Maggie Houlihan and Councilman Dan Dalager said they would like to preserve the old Hall house that sits on the property. While the historical significance of the structure is questionable, Houlihan said the building could later be rented out to generate income for the city. Dalager said he hopes someone in the community with a love of local history, or a “sugar daddy,” will pay the restoration costs of approximately $264,000. Residents irked over train noise By Bianca Kaplanek
DEL MAR — Del Mar residents are once again seeking to establish a quiet zone at the Coast Boulevard train crossing, and at least three said they are willing to help fund the necessary improvements. Hershell Price, speaking on behalf of a large group of residents, asked City Council at the Oct. 26 meeting to begin the process to establish a quiet zone. If that isn’t feasible, he asked council members to at least discuss the merits of implementing a nighttime or directional quiet zone. He said the number and frequency of trains passing through the city — and the decibel levels of their horns — have increased significantly in the past few years. “It’s getting to the point where it’s no longer TURN TO TRAIN ON A20
