The Popular Party (PP) and the PSOE (socialist party) have usually shared out the seats between them, with a few minority parties sweeping up. The election on 20th December overturned this pattern. Now there are four viable parties in Spain: PP, PSOE, Podemos and Ciudadanos.

them would still be insufficient to govern. As the exit poll results started to come in, it was evident that the split that had been anticipated was the reality. Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party were gaining the most votes altogether but they would not have sufficient number to lead the country outright. The biggest surprise of the evening was that of Podemos. Having looked like the fourth position party, they were coming in as a strong third. In Torrevieja, Podemos received the second highest number of votes at 5,767 behind the PP with 9,484. In the 2011 general election the PP received 15,099 and Podemos did not exist. The political party leaders each claimed success. ‘This party once more is the leading political force in Spain,’ announced Mariano Rajoy of the PP. ‘We have won the elections again. I am going to try to form a government and I believe Spain needs a stable government.’ Pablo Iglesias for Podemos stated clearly that his main priority was constitutional reform and a referendum for Catalonia. ‘These results make clear CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
