Political turmoil to continue ■ SUZANNE O’CONNELL

Events in the bid to find the next prime minister continue to become even more tortuous this week.

H

aving accepted the Kings’ offer to stand as Prime Minister and making an agreement with Ciudadanos, Pedro Sánchez, leader of the centre-right party, was unable to rally further support. On Wednesday, 2nd March, Spanish Congress voted 219 – 130 against the PSOE (centre left) leader becoming Prime Minister. Unable to convince either the PP or Podemos to back him, it was inevitable that Sánchez would fail. This pattern was repeated during the second vote on Friday, 4th March. This time the vote was 219 – 131 with Sánchez having squeezed another vote from the Canarian Coalition. Sánchez

defended his actions to try and form a government and criticised Rajoy for refusing to do so. The PSOE leader had put together a list of 200 improvements, a list for reform that he claimed Podemos would find acceptable. In the meantime Podemos leader, Pablo Iglesias, had made the headlines and raised a number of eyebrows by kissing Xavier Domenech on the mouth in front of the Economy Minster Luis de Guindos. Iglesias reiterated Podemos’

offer to stand with Pedro Sánchez as part of a progressive coalition. It was the agreement with Ciudadanos that Podemos could not subscribe to. Iglesias asked Sánchez to; ‘Dare to be a Prime Minister of a true progressive coalition’ and ‘accept a coalition government like the one in Valencia in which we take the decisions together.’ He has made it clear that

Podemos are now available for further talks. The debates on Wednesday and Friday were heated ones and although Spanish Congress remains at an impasse there are changes happening in the procedures adopted and the formality usually adhered to. If nothing else this period of uncertainty is allowing tradition to be challenged and perhaps a new way forward to be sketched. Now there is another wait as during the next two months the parties can negotiate for a new agreement to form a government. This will be the last chance for this to happen. If it proves to be impossible then a second general election will be held in June. With this and the UK referendum to leave Europe in the same month, it could be a turbulent start to the summer.
