S THE WEATHER WARMS up so the town council in Torrevieja is setting out its plans for arts and culture in April, May and June. Torrevieja is blessed with several locations where events can take place. With the Virgen del Carmen, Teatro Municipal de Torrevieja, Palacio de la Música, the Eras de la Sal and the AuditorioInternacional all hosting events for a variety of audiences. At present the Teatro Municipal is still closed. However, the department are keen to explain that this is only a temporary measure and once the problems that resulted in its closure have been addressed, the theatre will be back in its usual role, hopefully in June. Blanco. He is passionate about ensuring that as many people in the town can take part in events as possible. One of the council’s goals is to ensure that
programmes and notices are translated into English. It is acknowledged that it’s not only the British community that would benefit from this. Having staff at the main tourist attractions too who are able to communicate in English is seen as an important development by the council. ‘We want a fresh approach to arts and culture in the town,’ explains Frederico. ‘There has been a tendency to stick with the same events and involve the same people. We want to open this up and attract new ideas and groups. We need to make better use of the weather we have here and the fact that we can bring art and culture into the street. I’d like to see more variety and more young people too.’ Many young people will be pleased to hear that there are still plans for the Electromar festival to take place. There had been some doubts about this event but it anticipated that it will still happen. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
