Victory for continuous day campaigners! After years of campaigning for a change to the school day in Spain, schools across the Alicante region were delighted to finally have their way.

T

he deadline for voting was the 15th September and parents and teachers in many schools in

Torrevieja stayed into the night to count them. Schools in Valencia had been given the opportunity to vote for the new timetable. A total of 266 schools in Alicante province, 37 schools in Valencia and 14 in Castellon took up the opportunity to do so. In the final ballot, a total of 260 Alicante schools voted in favour of changing their hours. The day traditionally has been divided by a long lunch hour from

12.30pm to 3pm. Those parents whose children went home for lunch were then required to bring their children back to school for another 90 minutes with the official school day finishing at 4.30pm. The new arrangements do vary slightly between schools but mean that in most cases children will be able to leave their primary school at 2pm if they don’t wish to stay for dinner without having to return.
