*Resilience The ability of something to recover from a shock or disturbance Definition of the main concepts

RESILIENCE A word from the Latin verb resilium, resilire "jump back, bounce" Resilience refers to a dynamic process encompassing positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1885202/ Resilience is the ability of a material to recover from a shock, insult, or disturbance.

*ECOLOGICAL RESILIENCE In ecology, resilience is the capacity of an ecosystem to respond to perturbation or disturbance by resisting damage and recovering quickly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resilience_(ecology)

*LEGAL RESILIENCE Legal resilience is the ability of individuals within the general framework of human rights, to recover its original state of liberty, equality, innocence ... after being subjected to the actions of forces.

*PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE Resilience in psychology refers to the idea of an individual's tendency to cope with stress and adversity. This coping may result in the individual “bouncing back” to a previous state of normal functioning, or using the experience of exposure to adversity to produce a “steeling effect” and function better than expected. Resilience is most commonly understood as a process, and not a trait of an individual.

* GLOBAL DIFFICULTIES, LOCAL SOLUTIONS Auletta has begun the process of rebuilding its historical center (this process will also help local community to find a new point of view on the tragic earthquake of November 23rd 1980 and as well on its memory), with some urban redevelopment that are funded by Regione Campania: the creation of a park preserving the ruins, the introduction of accommodation facilities to promote access to and knowledge of a geographic area that is exceptionally enriched with resources and amenities. In recognition of the high potential Auletta holds for innovative redevelopment, the local parties involved have opted to elicit external expertise via a process based on a set of shared moral principles.

TIMELINE 1980

EARTHQUAKE

The historical center was destroyed. The ruin area comprises approximately 25% of the town center. 2000

ECONOMY

Total abandonment of the inhabitants for both social and economic reasons. The Auletta region simply cannot address the potential for tourism. Institutions instead favoring industrialization. Local agricultural areas have been found ill-prepared and under-resourced. 2010

DEMOGRAPHY

Population from 2001 to 2010 decreased by -1.3%. Younger generations are studying and working in urban areas. Median age in 2010 is nearly 43 years old. 6.1% are born_10.2% die There are nearly 150 empty houses.

* AULETTA LOCATED IN SOUTHERN ITALY Attraction points near Auletta:

SALERNO Schola Medica Salernitana (the first University of Medicine in de world) Main town closer to the Costiera Amalfitana (there are the famous towns of Amalfi, Positano,...) Important cultural centre (the medieval sector, 19th century district and the post-war area) http://www.provincia.salerno.it/

PARCO NAZIONALE DEL CILENTO E VALLO DI DIANO Lovely alternation between sea and mountains Wonderful and multiple landscapes http://www.cilentoediano.it/

PERTOSA The Angel or Pertosa Caves (In the green landscape of the Alburni mountain) MIDA Musei Integrati Dell’Ambiente Festival of ethnic music “Negro Festival”

INFRASTRUCTURE AND CONNECTIVITY Italy is a country with a high agricultural and commercial potential. If we look at the overland routes, we can look how the traffic set in the northern part is more dense than in the southern part. Looking at the maritime trade, the southern part of the country is the one with more opportunities.

* THE LOGIC OF THE PAST. INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE Mechanization and industrialization of agriculture. This growth looks flat terrain to facilitate extensive farming and optimize production. Model imported from the USA. Oil-based culture. Abandoning and progressive destruction of the traditional patterns of agriculture. The map highlights the polarization of the rural landscape which today appears divided between forest areas (darker green), prevalently located in mountain areas, and agricultural areas (lighter green). Although the adopted scale overemphasizes the phenomenon, socioeconomic dynamics indeed undermined the historical integration between wood pastures and agriculture reducing the complexity of Italy’s landscape mosaic and biodiversity by favour, instead, simplification and structural homogeneity. Paesaggi Rurali Storici. Mauro Agnoletti

PARADIGM SHIFT. THE PEAK OIL We are coming to a paradigm shift that is making all economic systems based on the culture of oil evolve. “one conceptual world view is replaced by another” Thomas Kuhn

THE LOGIC LOGIC OF THE FUTURE. EXTENSIVE AGRICULTURE Back to intensive agriculture with traditional knowledge through a global model based on the characteristics of the territory. Recovery of local and regional values to create new synergies between towns and their neighbouring towns. Agriculture should be able to create a new cultural landscape of the work from the concept of ecotons. It’s a mosaic of natural ecosystems with a mixture of different areas of crop biodiversity reinforcing the area.

* VALUE ADDED, AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL In economics The difference between the sale price and the production cost of a product is the value added per unit. In agriculture Value-added agriculture refers most generally to manufacturing processes that increase the value of primary agricultural commodities. This concept has gained currency in the small farm policy debate. Examples include direct marketing; farmer ownership of processing facilities; and producing farm products with a higher intrinsic value (such as identity-preserved grains, organic produce; etc.), for which buyers are willing to pay a higher price than for more traditional bulk commodities, like a significant rural development strategy. Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value-added_agriculture

LAND The rugged topography of the territory of Auletta does not allow intensive agricultural exploitation. So it should enhance product quality, and not quantity. EXTERNAL KNOWLEDGE The external knowledge allows us to offer a competitive product in a global context. This contribution could vary according to needs. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE The traditional knowledge is efficient and sustainable; it is adapted to the climate and location. The knowledge related to the value of a territory is allowed to make a unique product.

* VALUE ADDED, COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE Actually, it is common that citizens feel increasingly distant from political and communal life. One of the most powerful tools to revitalize Auletta is to engage people to any action or decision that is made in the town.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION Public participation is all the activity that is aimed to influence directly or indirectly in public policies. Talk about citizen participation is to influence on the decisions of the town and pass the power to the people. Citizen participation has two main types of actors: people as individuals and organizations. The institutions should play a key role in any participatory process, but necessary to open the process to citizens looking for maximum representation. http://www.cilentoediano.it/

Examples of foundations: ALICIA Fo Foundation Is a research center engaged to the technological innovation of cooking, to the improvement of dietary habits and to the assessment of food and culinary heritage. It’s a center with a social vocation and open to everyone to promote good nutrition. http://www.alicia.cat/ El Bulli Fo Foundation Is a brainstorming /cinema hall, an archive, a place to find ideas, a few “experiences”. http://www.bullifoundation.org/
