October is National Cooperative Month, but what’s a cooperative? Cooperative Principles Open and voluntary membership Member control Member economic participation Autonomy and independence Education, training and information Cooperation among co-ops Concern for community
A cooperative is a business that is owned and controlled by its members or customers. Unlike traded companies that are governed by those with the highest level invested, cooperatives operate under a “one member, one vote” system. Cobb EMC is proud to be part of America’s cooperative network, which includes more than 47,000 cooperative businesses. This month, we are celebrating the benefits and values that cooperatives bring to their members and communities. As an electric cooperative, Cobb EMC is: • Owned by the members we serve • A not-for-profit electric utility • A distribution cooperative that distributes electricity to our members • Governed by a board of directors – elected from the membership – that sets policies and procedures that are implemented by co-op management

Did you know you’re sharing your home with energy vampires? Halloween is almost here, and a band of spooky energy vampires could be lurking around your home. These energy vampires are appliances that continue to draw power from electrical outlets, even when turned off or idle. On average, these items are responsible for an estimated 10 percent of the electricity you use every month.
cobbemc.com
We’ve prepared a list of actions to take care of energy vampires in your home for good: In the bathroom: Unplug hair dryers, curling irons or electric shavers. In the kitchen: Unplug your microwave, small kitchen television, toaster oven, coffee makers and other unused appliances. In the living room: Hook up your entertainment center, TVs, DVRs, gaming consoles, small DVD players, printers and other living room appliances to power strips or an outlet with a wall switch. Then you can easily switch the whole system off when you need to. Also, watch out for cellphone and laptop chargers all over your house. Have a safe and energy-saving Halloween!
