lasses! Amazing Insects of Cochise County, page 7 with Robert B. Parks Study the bizarre and much smaller world of insects in this two-part class to include lecture and field trip. From pests to pollinators, drab to colorful, desert insects have a variety of fascinating features and purposes that are easily overlooked. Friday’s lecture will build an appreciation for these creatures and Saturday’s field trip will bring the lecture to life.

Little Needle-Felted Animals, page 3 with Lisa Thompson Entertain your imagination with needle felting! This class is designed for beginners – no previous felting or sewing experience is necessary. You can learn basics about the craft of needle felting, how to use a single needle, alpaca fleece (roving) and embellishments to make a small 3-dimensional animal of your choice to take home. Class fee includes a kit which contains a felting needle, sponge, fleece, wire, beads for eyes and various accent pieces of dyed fleece.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 – Creative Images, page 5 with Ron Hyde Advance your Photoshop skill set. Those who are familiar with the basics of Photoshop are invited to enroll in this intermediate level class. Explore the world of image manipulation, layering, and clone tools. This course will help you prepare images for print or web media, and have fun while learning!

Shakespeare for Fun with Douglas Lees Did you dread reading Shakespeare in school because you just didn’t get it? Then it’s time to revisit the Old Bard and NEW see how much fun he can really be. Douglas Lees, an English teacher from Yorkshire, England, will catch your attention with his irreverent and common sense approach to Shakespeare’s plays. Arts and Crafts One Woman’s Trash ― Junk Mail Create greeting cards for all occasions using junk mail, magazines and other paper that you might ordinarily put in the trash or recycling bin. In the third class of the Trash Art NEW Series, Mary will offer other creative ideas for using these resources to decorate, embellish and adorn your home or office. What better way to express yourself than to create something from practically nothing? Bring scissors, doublesided tape and any colorful junk mail, magazines or catalogs. The Art of Image Transfers with Heather Green Research a multitude of image transfer techniques in this fun, hands-on workshop! These exciting methods are versatile and can be used to enhance artwork, scrapbook and PRICE CUT journal pages, cards, furniture and home décor. You can learn, step-by-step, how to transfer photographic images onto a variety of surfaces, and walk away with directions, samples, troubleshooting tips and additional project ideas. Bring a sketchbook and pens/pencils for notes during class. *There is a required $15 kit fee to be paid to the instructor at the beginning of class. You can learn to be creative with items that normally would be tossed into the trash. There are many ideas out there on Facebook, Pinterest etc. Do you need a nudge or encouragement to try them? Come for a morning of creative stimulation, fun and complete a project or two. Sign up for all four classes and save! Pay $54 for the entire series or $15 per individual class. One Woman’s Trash ― Greeting Cards Make tiny boxes and several types of ornaments with your old greeting cards in the first class of the Trash Art Series. One Woman’s Trash ― Household “Stuff” In the fourth and final class of this series, various household items will be used to create fun and decorative items NEW for your home. Toilet paper/paper towel tubes become mini baskets or flowers. Cereal boxes become cardboard “yarn” for wreaths or nests. Spark your creativity, complete a project or two and have fun reusing, repurposing and recycling. Bring several empty toilet paper/paper towel tubes, one or more cereal boxes and scissors. Your instructor will also have some supplies for your use. Date Time Location Cost Saturday, August 2 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Douglas Art Gallery and Gift Shop $15 Block Printmaking for Greeting Cards with Heather Green Take your hand-made cards to the next level by carving and printing multiple images using a linoleum block. DiscusPRICE CUT sions will include using positive and negative space, transferring the image, carving techniques, different printing methods and adding color to a print. This ancient medium is easy enough for beginners, yet challenging enough for experienced artists. Once learned, printmaking can be enjoyed for a lifetime! Bring a sketchbook and pens/pencils for notes during class. *There is a required $15 kit fee to be paid to the instructor at the beginning of class. One hour lunch break included in class time. One Woman’s Trash ― T-shirts Recycle, repurpose and restyle T-shirts. Mary will use the second class of the Trash Art Series to make something new and useful out of something old and not so useful. You can NEW make accessories, household items or restyle your shirt. Bring your T-shirts, fabric shears, a pen and a portable sewing machine if you have one (several projects won’t need this). Some materials and a sewing machine will be available to use. Time permitting, you might be able to take home one or more completed items. Creating Memories with iPhoto with Carol Downey Employ your imagination and delve into editing and creating a slideshow using your personal photographs. Excel 2010 Series with Sean Trachtman Improve your skills in Excel 2010 with this three-part series. Part 1 is a basic introduction to Excel. Topics include using toolbars and worksheets, selecting cells and entering data, creating spreadsheets and formulas, formatting cells, handling and saving files. Part 2 builds on your skills from Part 1. It covers worksheet tables, selecting and formatting objects, text boxes, shapes and charts, conditional formatting and printing tips. Nature Things That Make You Say, “Ouch!” with Jeff Babson Investigate the well-fortified flora and fauna that we share with the desert-bees, scorpions, rattlesnakes, poison ivy and NEW many others. The Sonoran Desert is full of many different kinds of plants and animals. Some of these desert dwellers protect themselves by methods that are rather unpopular with humans – biting or stinging, for example. Hummingbirds: Flying Jewels with Jeff Babson Catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring hummingbirds. Their glittering colors, unparalleled flying abilities and interestNEW ing behaviors make them one of southern Arizona’s main birding attractions. In this family-friendly class, color slides and audio recordings are used to teach identification of hummingbirds and basic aspects of their biology. Do you want to attract these remarkable birds to your yard? You will also learn about plants for a hummingbird garden and the right sugar water mix for your nectar feeders. Ghost Birds: Extinct and Endangered North American Birds with Jeff Babson Get a peek at the Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet and Great Auk. Sadly, these North American birds have disNEW appeared forever. This class will take a look at the loss of these birds, their legacy and other birds that are endangered. Jeff will share some success stories and discuss efforts being taken to prevent America’s lost and imperiled bird life from sinking into oblivion. Wild Edible and Useful Plants with Vince Pinto Vincent Pinto, ethnobotanist, naturalist, and wildlife biologist, will be your guide in a detailed exploration of the wild edible and otherwise useful plants of the sky islands. This journey of discovery is aimed at increasing your knowledge about edible native plants and how various cultures of the southwest have employed these botanical treasures as their everyday menu. Vince will show you how to locate, identify, collect, process, safely cook and sample a wide range of delicious and nutritious wild plants. Further scrutiny will include plants traditionally used for fire-making, shelter, tools, music and more. Bring a notebook and pen/pencil, water, lunch and/or snacks. Mineral Creek – Gila Cliff Dwellings with Glenn Minuth Celebrate “Great Outdoors Day” with a trip to the Mineral Creek and Gila Cliff Dwellings near Silver City, New Mexico. NEW SITES First, hike the scenic Mineral Creek Trail, traversing the “narrows” section, where your guide, Glenn Minuth, will discuss the geology that creates the colorful volcanic rock and small waterfalls. The next day, enjoy a scenic journey to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and hike to the Cliff Dweller Canyon. Discussion will cover what is known about the Mogollon People who built the dwellings. The Cliff Dweller Canyon Trail is rated an easy half mile hike along the canyon bottom to a viewpoint of the dwellings. However, to reach the actual dwellings, you must hike 175 feet up a rocky trail (rated moderate by the trip leader). Complete itinerary and packing list will be provided prior to trip. Bring a picnic lunch and snacks. Friday night dinner is no host in Silver City. These and many other questions will be considered in this trek into the amazing skies of southeastern Arizona. Amateur astronomer Vincent Pinto will use a combination of high-tech equipment, as well as various myths associated with the constellations, to help you know your way around the night sky as never before. See several planets as well, including spectacular Saturn! This is an outdoor class. Wear weather appropriate clothing and walking shoes. Quality of night viewing is dependent on weather conditions. Las Cienagas Natural History Field Trip with Vince Pinto Encounter one of our region’s most beautiful and diverse natural areas with naturalist and wildlife biologist Vince Pinto. He will lead you through a detailed exploration of Las Cienagas where thousands of acres of rare habitat and animals, including reintroduced black-tailed prairie dogs and pronghorns, are protected. In this guided tour, you can learn about the area's birds, native plants, invertebrates and conservation initiatives during a relaxed walk of about two to three miles round-trip. There will be ample opportunity to observe the area's unique wildlife. Transportation provided. Wear weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen, hat and comfortable outdoor walking shoes. Your escapade will begin at Raven's Nest Nature Sanctuary, NEW where you can comb the lush mesquite woodlands and native grasslands for intriguing wildlife and unique plants. Lunch will be at the African-style safari camp. After lunch, you will leave Raven’s Nest for a relaxed natural history trip to Sonoita Creek State Natural Area and Patagonia Lake State Park to pursue more unique flora and fauna. This saunter is slow to moderate with the focus on learning about the multitude of species you may meet during the lushness of monsoon season. The terrain at Raven's Nest Nature Sanctuary and at Patagonia Lake will be mostly flat with moderate hills. At Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, expect more rocky terrain as well as a few short, but steep hills. Total walking distance for the day will be about 3 miles. Transportation provided.
