Dragons and Damsels, June 25 with Jeff Babson Increase your appreciation for dragonflies and damselflies. These are large, incredibly beautiful insects that are becoming as popular with wildlife watchers as birds and butterflies. Many species bear evocative names like dancers, meadowhawks, skimmers, pondhawks and more. They are conspicuous components of most freshwater habitats. Special focus is given to species found in southern Arizona.

You can do this without reading music, or any prior musical experience. You can rely on the power of the group to get you playing at record speed. Class includes one free visit to The High Strung Desert Ukesters club meeting in Sierra Vista or Bisbee. Students must be age 13 and older. Bring a tuner and a tunable ukulele – soprano, concert or tenor size. A baritone ukulele is not recommended and would need to be restrung prior to class. Nature Nature Journaling with Beth Krueger, Ph.D., Dean of Math, Sciences and Health Sciences Connect with nature, enhance health and wellness, combat stress, have fun and improve a variety of skills inexpensively through nature journaling. You don’t need to be a scientist, naturalist, writer or artist. Beth will present the basics so you can go outside to start journaling right away. Wild, Edible, Useful Plants with Vincent Pinto Vincent Pinto, ethnobotanist, naturalist and wildlife biologist will be your guide on a detailed exploration of the wild edible and otherwise useful plants of the sky islands. Your journey is aimed at increasing your knowledge about edible native plants and how various cultures of the southwest have employed these botanical treasures as their everyday menu. Vincent will show you how to locate, identify, collect, process, safely cook and sample a wide range of delicious, nutritious wild plants. Wild Medicinal Plants with Vincent Pinto Ethnobotanist and naturalist Vincent Pinto will lead an informative, interactive nature workshop. Native plants help with a wide variety of health issues. You can find out how to use and process these plants into healing oils, salves, sachets, medicinals, teas and tinctures. Class will take place near Patagonia Lake at Raven’s Nest, a pristine, 42-acre nature sanctuary dedicated to promoting unique biodiversity. Special Interest Whose Fault Is It? Revisiting the 1887 Sonoran Earthquake with Glenn Minuth Consider Arizona’s earthquake risk via examination of earthquake nomenclature, seismic waves, damage scales and historic samples. Then, scrutinize the 1887 earthquake by reviewing historic damage pictures and narrative first-person accounts from more than 200 Arizona locations, nearby states and Mexico. Class will also take a look at the Pitaycachi Fault and how it has been studied recently to analyze activity potential. Date Time Location Room Cost Thursday, June 18 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. SVC 702 $25 Arizona’s Steamboat Era—Who Knew? with Glenn Minuth Steamboat transportation had a little-known but substantial influence on the opening of the Arizona Territory in the latter half of the 19th century. For decades, river NEW steamboats performed enormous services toward development of the west. Why did the U.S. Army pioneer “river navigation” in Arizona? Find out how shallow rivers could actually support paddle wheel traffic, or could they? Class will consider other perplexing problems that had to be overcome for successful riverine operations, including river pirates and the character of the entrepreneurial risk takers. Hydroponic Farming with Tom Hanson, Hilltop Hydroponics Renovate your idea of gardening by taking a farm tour of Sonoita-based Hilltop Hydroponics. Our Instructors Jeff Babson has worked at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the Department of Mammalogy and Ornithology. This enables him to teach courses at the University of Arizona, Pima Community College as well as Cochise College. He also conducted fieldwork in Arizona about the importance of the saguaro cactus to the avian community. Jeff has a passion for what he considers the Holy Land of U.S. natural history: Madera Canyon, the Huachucas, the Chiricahuas and the San Pedro River. He looks forward to sharing it with you.

Linda Coffman has been in the wallpapering and faux finishing business since 1990. She has completed projects in homes, churches, other businesses and model homes throughout the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-Saint Paul) and now in Arizona. Her experience enhances her ability to create looks that are truly unique. More than 3,000 students have attended her classes in 15 different states.

Ann Morrison has taught Non-Profit Management courses at the University of South Florida since 2009, and now she brings her knowledge and experience to Cochise County. Ann has a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University and certificates in NonProfit Management and Fundraising Management for Non-Profit Organizations from the University of Texas at Austin. She believes in the importance of non-profit services to the community and strives to grow successful organizations through education.
