Massage Envy South Miami Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary Husband and wife team, Wayne Retsema and Lourdes Martinez, are celebrating their 10-year anniversary of Massage Envy in South Miami! Having served many of our Cocoplum, Islands of Cocoplum and Tahiti Beach families for the last decade, the couple has just completed a massive renovation to their Massage Envy location, bringing a fresh new look, upgraded state-of-the-art equipment, and the same exceptional service that our neighbors have grown accustomed to over the years. Although now owners of the wildly popular Brickell, South Miami and Country Walk locations, Wayne and Lourdes were unlikely candidates for a Massage Envy franchise. Wayne had been a famous radio personality for over 20 years and Lourdes a successful residential realtor when in 2007 the couple found themselves rethinking their careers. “It was the height of the housing market collapse and so many people were under stress because of the economy. I thought,

‘Wow, I really need a massage more than ever,’ and that’s when the idea hit me,” recalls Lourdes. Within a few months, Wayne and Lourdes had purchased the Massage Envy franchise for South Miami and found their ideal location on the corner of Red Road and 72ndstreet. “Our family thought we were crazy to open up a company in the middle of a recession, but we really believed in the importance of health and wellness. Looking back today we are so appreciative of our Coral Gables and South Miami community for believing in us and supporting us the entire way,” exclaims Lourdes. The Massage Envy brand, which is the largest purveyor of massage services in the world, continues to grow in its reach as well as the services they offer. “It’s amazing that more than 50% of all massages that are administered in the U.S. are done so by Massage Envy locations,” says Lourdes. Of course, the brand offers the most robust selection of massag-
es including: Swedish, trigger point therapy, deep tissue, sports massage, reflexology, cranial sacral therapy, geriatric, and prenatal massages. But most impressive perhaps is the continuing education and intense screening that therapists must complete as an ongoing process. “Our therapist must undergo schooling and re-certification in their massage specialty each year, and we run annual background checks every six months,” explains Wayne, “We want our clients to have access to the most advanced techniques in the industry, along with the understanding that they can trust every single one of our therapists.” Through the years Massage Envy has used test markets, such as Wayne and Lourdes’ South Miami location, to expand its services into facials and advanced skin care treatments, as well as total body stretches. “10 years ago, when we opened our South Miami location we were one of the first clinics in the country to introduce facials and other skin care treatments. Today this is one of the most popular services we offer,” explains Wayne. Today, Lourdes is one of the most fervent supporters of non-profits and local charities in South Miami. Lourdes has partnered up with several of our Cocoplum neighbors to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation and the Cancerlink Foundation, among others. “One of the things I’m most excited and proud about is giving back to the community. We feel the support from the community and it feels so gratifying to be able to give back,” exclaims Lourdes. The couple loves working together in the family business and even has added their daughter Madison to the team. “Madison has been working at the South Miami clinic since she was 14 years old, and it’s very special to us because now she manages the location, which happens to be one of the top performing clinics in the state,” says Lourdes. Wayne and Lourdes continue to expand into other sectors of health and wellness, as they will be opening three acupuncture clinics in 2019. “Modern Acupuncture is the first franchise acupuncture business in the world. There are just under 40 locations around the country and it follows the same business model as Massage Envy,” says Wayne. The couple explains that there’s not many affordable and convenient acupuncture clinics out there where clients can just drop in at any time and get their treatment quickly and professionally. Their first Modern Accupuncture location will be opening in Pinecrest Village near the Whole Foods
