Argonne National Laboratory distinguished fellow in Material Science Division Amanda Petford-Long

Amanda Petford-Long believes the rise in the number of women working in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has seen a drastic increase over the years. But as Argonne National Laboratory’s distinguished fellow in the Material Science Division, she also knows the percentage of women in those fields decreases with every career transition.

“Women drop out because women are generally less confident,” said Petford-Long. “If women are told to meet 10 criteria for a job, they probably won’t apply. They think to themselves they need about eight of the criteria. Yes, I can’t tick eight of the box-

es. Guys are more likely to apply because they think they can meet two.

“Women are less confident about their own abilities to learn new things.”

A women in STEM event brought together middle and high school students to encourage them to beat this narrative.

During the event, hosted on Feb. 23, students had the opportunity to interact with women working in STEM, College of DuPage alumnae working in STEM, and professors here at the college who are positive role models for female students interested in STEM. Petford-Long re-echoed the call for more women to challenge the status quo

in order to create a diverse work environment, that yields diverse solutions to scientific problems, and to change the dynamics as per women’s role throughout the STEM fields.

“Each and every one of us, if I ask you to solve a research problem, you will approach it differently,” added Petford-Long. “And that is why diversity is so important. Because if you have an institution where everybody looks pretty much the same, with the same approach to solving problems, you are going to lose some of those different approaches you could otherwise bring in.”

and teaches as a professor at Northwestern University’s school of engineering.

She holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Material Science from Oxford University and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the prestigious University College, London.

The euphoria was high, and students had a chance to ask mind-blowing questions that usually hinder women from pursuing STEM-related careers.

Two separate panel discussions gave attendees the opportunity to hear from a wide-range of STEM professionals about their personal journey, choices and experiences.

The event ended with a tour of the Technical Ed-

ucation Center, a building that hosts the college’s architecture, automotive technology, and welding technology programs.

A community college like COD provides quality STEM education transferrable to top-notch universities in Illinois for a lower tuition rate compared to a 4-year institution. Students were made aware of the many existing transfer agreements, the quality of the faculty teaching STEM courses, and scholarship opportunities like the scholar’s award program.

“The college has some great opportunities,” said Ann Rondeau, COD’s president. “We have engineering programs, where

you can come here, study, and then go into University of Illinois engineering school. We’ve got students transferring to UIC, George Washington, and Berkeley.

“We have students who come here and have the attention of faculty who care about every single one of their students and get them on a good start to doing great things. We do that for of course prices that people who are paying for it will be happy with.”

to students that want to go into engineering and I think based on my experience I will recommend COD. VM: What personal career goals do you have after COD?

Tiffany Montgomery, Vice President of the Engineering and Technology Club at COD

Tiffany Montgomery is the vice president of the engineering and technology club at the College of DuPage. Montgomery is a computer engineering major and was one of the panelists at the college’s women in STEM event.

She is also involved with the college’s emerging entrepreneurs program and sees COD as the pathway to a career in STEM. The Courier news reporter had a chat with Montgomery during a brief intermission at the women in STEM event. Here is how it went: Vandy Manyeh: Why are you studying computer engineering?

Tiffany Montgomery: I’ve always known that I love science and mathematics. In eighth grade, I figured out what pro-

gramming was and I took Codecademy classes online, and my junior year of high school I took computer programming I and II and AP computer science. Out of high school, I thought I wanted to do computer science, which is more computer theory and complex features. But then, I got more into robotics and more into electrical, physical computing, and I decided computer engineering is a good major because it allows me to learn more about electrical, and to have a breadth of things that are robotics.

VM: What do you do outside of your study at COD? TM: I am the vice president of the engineering and technology club, and I am also on the emerging

entrepreneurs program. I occasionally go to a lot of different clubs; I wish I could go to the Society of Women Engineers more often. I think I’ve been there once, and I hope to go more this semester. I’ve done the Pride Alliance frequently. I do long-distance running also. Some of my members at the engineering and technology have a mileage club going, so we run a lot. And then, I also learn how to play guitars.

VM: How is COD a great place for students who are interested in pursuing a degree in any of the STEM fields?

TM: I think COD has a lot of things in place for girls that want to go into STEM. We have the Society of Women En-

gineers, we have female faculty members, we have a lot of counselors and advisors that are sensitive to issues. A lot of professors at COD are supportive of having more women in STEM. In general, COD is a great place for future engineers to go because our engineering classes are awesome. We have the engineering pathways program which is an agreement with U of I to have a lot of the engineering classes transferred straight into U of I. U of I is like one of the top schools for engineering in the country, so that is amazing that COD can say that our freshman and sophomore classes are equivalent to one of the top engineering schools in the country. COD is cost effective, there are plenty of scholarships available

TM: In general, my career goals includes just owning a robotics company, I am not really concerned about what type of robots as long as I can say I am producing these robots. I think automation is definitely something I am passionate about, not only because robots are cool and artificial intelligence is cool, but I also want to have an impact on making sure that as we move into a more automated society, we are taking the proper precautions to make sure that human beings are still accommodated, to make sure that we are still making jobs for human beings, instead of allowing robots take everything. I want to make sure that some ethical issues are considered, so that is what I want to focus on after school.

VM: How important is it for female students to pursue a degree in any of the STEM fields?

TM: I think it is a kind of controversial answer.

I think it is important to have a gender balance in every aspect of life because different genders experience life in different ways. There is a survey that researched different groups; they had all-male groups, all-female groups, and mixed groups, and it was always the equal bal-

ance among gender groups that came up with the most ideas, not the female ones, not the male ones.

I think it is important to have diversity not just with gender, but ethnic backgrounds and anything like that. You need a diversity of ideas in any group in order to be creative because you can’t be creative unless you know how to take a lot of things and put them together. Now, as far as how important it is for a girl to go into STEM, I think it is important to make sure that you are aware of all the opportunities you have out there. STEM careers are very lucrative, and it is almost guaranteed that you are going to have a job, so girls should definitely consider STEM. VM: Any final advice for female students who would like to pursue a career in STEM? TM: Acknowledge that what you are doing is difficult, then embrace that difficulty. So, you are always going to have a moment where you feel uncomfortable, where you feel like you are not supposed to be where you are, or where you don’t feel good enough, just embrace that and understand that’s normal. If you understand that, then it will be very helpful when you get that first bad grade on an exam or when somebody shoots down your idea and doesn’t listen to you in a meeting, just understand that life is hard and you have to build the motivation to keep going.

NASA discovers seven possibly life-supporting planets Kitt Fresa · News Editor

Just a few days ago NASA announced the discovery of seven exoplanets orbiting a very small dwarf star named TRAPPIST-1.

These planets are a massive discovery because all have the ability to sustain human life. Depending on a few factors even the exoplanets closest to the star may be hospitable. What is more likely though is the that only three exoplanets are hospitable. These three are within “The Goldilocks Zone,” a place not too hot nor too cold.

“Three of these planets are in the habitable zone where liquid water could pool on the surface. With

the right atmospheric conditions there could be water on any of these planets,” said, Associate Administrator at NASA Thomas Zurbuchen during a panel. Zurbuchen later went on to say, “the discovery gives us a hint, that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when.”

This was from a panel with a few experts from NASA along with a few of the scientists that made the discover.

NASA still is not sure if any of the exoplanets have water, but they will most likely find out soon.

have atmospheres along with any sustainable atmospheres as well. The exoplanets were discovered

by NASA using a telescope named TRAPPIST, actually the star itself was discovered in 2016 but the exoplanets were not until just recently.

TRAPPIST-1 is unfortunately 40 light-years away so with the technology we have now, it would take an estimated 44 million years to reach the planets. However if we were to discover how to travel at light speed it would only take around 39 years. Travel is obviously unlikely so the real poten-

tial lies with whether there may be life on the planets or not. Studying these planets and running tests is what NASA is focused on at the moment. As disappointing as the distance is, the discovery could develop into something monumental and hopefully any information collected from the discovery can be utilized for traveling to closer destinations like Mars. Also the research that is being done will be much more refined by next year as tests, heavy dedication and effort will go into this discovery.

The exoplanets are largely the same size as Earth

but are extremely close to each other. For example, if you were standing on one of these planets you would be able to see the other neighboring planets zipping by in a size closer to the moon. The sun as well would be massive and would appear to be approximately twice the size of our sun, when in reality it is about one tenth the size of our own. Since these planets are so close to each other they orbit their star extremely quickly. We orbit our sun in 365 days, the closest exoplanet orbits in only 1.5. The farthest orbits in around 20 days.

sor of Planetary Science and Physics at MIT, Sara Seager said, “with this discovery we’ve made a giant accelerated leap forward in the search for habitable worlds and life on other worlds potentially speaking. Because with not just one planet but several, we have room that if we didn’t have the habitable zone quite right, or we weren’t sure quite what we’re looking for, we have many chances over. You could say locally, it’s like in this planetary system, Goldilocks has many sisters.”

Apollo Live returned this year with another grouping of student talent which wooed the audience. The show was on Feb. 27, and is a part of the campus wide celebration of Black History Month. To enter in this competition, students had to submit 30 to 60 second clips of their acts to McAnnich Art Center Director Diana Martinez.

A night with Ira Glass: A peek into the mind of host and producer of “This American Life” Caroline Broderick · Features Editor

It was an out-of-body-experience walking down the hall of the MAC and hearing that voice: the warm, oddly-calm yet oddly-extremely passionate voice, which I had heard so many times before through the speakers of my car. It felt out of place. But, the strangest thing was finally entering the room, and seeing that famous voice connected to an actual person: a shorter man with hair giving him at least two inches, thick-framed black glasses and the most humble smile, finished off in a suit and tie.

It was Ira Glass. The voice and the mind behind “This American Life (TAL),” a non-fiction radio and podcast show with six Peabody Awards (the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast media) to its credit.

Listeners know the voice well, hearing it every week teaching and sharing the stories unheard and the information needed.

Glass is not just known for the podcast but for years of working with radio broadcasting, especially with National Public Radio. Glass is a member of the National Radio Hall

of Fame. He lived in Chicago for 17 years Now he calls New York home.

Prior to Glass’ talk, several VIP guests were invited for a more intimate question and answer session with the man himself.

Glass brought each guest back in time with him, reflecting on his 30 years of journalistic work and reminding us all about TAL’s beginnings, adding, “Our interns now get paid more than we ever did for the first 10 years of the show.”

Due to the crying woman who could not contain herself when meeting Mr. Glass, the others trying to tell him their stories, or just his genuine curiosity with each individual he met, the show was running late, and with only a few seconds to spare, MAC Director Diana Martinez announced, “He’s smart; he’s interesting; he’s curious, and he’s here in Glen Ellyn,” as the Belushi Hall erupted in spirited applause, and out walked this curious man.

Examining the room with a smile, he greeted the crowd in front of a podium, tablet in hand.

The night’s topic had no specific goal, no clear expectations besides learning

the seven things Glass has learned through his career.

But ultimately, Glass was there to do what he does best, do what he’s become known for: telling stories.

“There are more than seven, so I understand if I get to the seventh point and you wanna go,” joked Glass.

1: How to tell a good story.

Glass questioned his own medium of storytelling when discussing how one makes a good story.

Are words enough? Can they touch you? Or do you need visuals to truly shake your core and leave a lasting impression?

As Glass shook my hand prior to his event and called me a colleague, I asked, “Why radio? Why podcasts over other forms of storytelling and news?”

“I still think other forms are doing a terrific job, like the New York Times,” said Glass. “But there’s something about a podcast that’s still a novelty. It’s interesting just hearing this voice.”

So when telling the audience how to tell a story and tell it well, he utilized his colleague’s cringe worthy experience of telling her 13-year-old daughter that she looks “so much better” with makeup on.

Abstract illustrations took you through the story, with the mother’s voice in the background explaining in detail how she immediately began thinking of the therapy her daughter would have to go to because of this experience. It kept the audience laughing, engaged, and wanting to know what would happen next.

wanted to know more, so he continued to phone the scarred 13-year-old himself and ask her thoughts on the whole event.

“I’m sure it will affect me some time in the future, but I don’t really care,” she said.

With his tablet, Glass mixed music in with these recordings of dialogue along with the interesting illustrations.

Through the little screen in his hands, he was like an artist and a DJ in his own realm, with his own form of art mixing in front of us.

It had the very recognizable music from TAL, different voices and different visuals in front of our eyes.

The simple placement of music and the choices he made left the audience with a raw peek into his genius.

After the first point, which was quite straightforward, Glass took humorously to his next points: “How to interview kids” and “What I learned from musicals.”

There was no moment longer than a minute where the audience was not roaring with laughter.

The entire night never felt like a lecture or a talk, it felt like a discussion and an entertaining night with a friend who is just very, very good at telling various stories.

Breaking this wall of presenter and audience member, Glass got personal. Strangely, he did this on the topic of musicals, which he is a huge fan of and has e v e n

worked on. “Fiddler on the Roof ” was one of his mother’s and his favorite shows. He told the audience about how recently, he completely broke down when watching the show on Broadway. And from that beginning of his mother showing him musicals and carrying out the love through his life, he learned that the ending of the story is the most powerful, especially when it is sad. This format mirrors how he sees “Fiddler on the Roof,” and he uses this format in his own work with TAL. Jokingly, he comments on how he is just writing a bunch of musicals.

With each point Glass made, there was some sort of evidence behind it, as any good journalist would do. Telling you about interviewing a child?

Musicals?

Well, here’s a musical he worked on with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

But the part that stood out the most, which I learned the most from, was how effortlessly Glass lets his curiosity guide him through his work. This was especially apparent in clips where he is openly interviewing someone. He doesn’t ask anything extraordinary, he asks simple things that in turn receive a response with depth.

He is not afraid to ask any question, to make any comment, he retained that when interacting with the audience. But he seeks out the truth in things, he also seeks out the humor and those things people wonder. It’s these basics that he holds so much strength with that truly made the night one worth learning from.

MOVIE REVIEW:

Get Out: A New Kind of Horror Kitt Fresa · News Editor

Fear has reached the mind. It is no longer just physical but mental anguish.

How much can the mind take under intense stress? What happens when you’ve reached your mental breaking point, and paralysis takes control?

I’m not much of a horror fan but, my Ggod, Get Out turned me into one.

Get Out is a psychological thriller unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s a film so tightly packed with suspense that after the first 20 minutes I could not take my eyes off the screen. Every twist and turn comes as a genuine surprise, which transforms this movie into a coveted treasure.

The plot is not limited to insane twists. It dives into places that have never been explored. The writing tinkers with the characters’ minds in ways that not only shocked the audience but created a thrilling story as well. No gap is left unclosed in Get Out. Every decision is made clear by the end of the film, and it presents a level of intricate care most other films fail to achieve. Get Out even utilizes race in an interesting way that guides the story into a deeper cerebral state.

We begin with Chris Washing-

ton, (Played by Daniel Kaluuya, who you might recognize from Sicario) a photographer, with a cute girlfriend who is dragging him to her parents house to “meet the family”. Chris shyly asks his girlfriend Rose Armitage, “Do they know I’m black?” Rose shakes it off and tells him not to worry, then the two drive off.

They arrive at a private home set on a plot of land with plenty of privacy, equipped with a set of servants. The awkwardness sets in as Washington’s silence and guarded manor react to Dean A r m i t a g e ’s (The Father) outgoing storytelling. “I would’ve voted for Obama for a third

term if I could.” Dean explains. As the two walk through the backyard Chris realizes that all of the servants are black, and Dean catches on. “I know how it looks,” he explains.

The family sits down to talk and this is where things get interesting. The whole family is staring at Washington and Rose with an intensity that parallels the way lions look at antelope

before attacking them.

The longer the scene goes on, the quieter it becomes before it’s interrupted by a servant. Just in those few seconds alone you can tell something isn’t right. The film develops an ominous vibe from here on out. The silences, the stares, Washington’s obvious anxiety– they all create a scary experience without anything

Peele. He’s tmade a name for himself on Key and Peele, a sketch comedy show that pulled Comedy Central back to a place it hadn’t seen since the days of Chappelle’s Show. A good amount of jokes are cleverly laid in Get Out as well. The jokes deliver a subtle comic relief to parts of the movie that break it up into more watchable pieces. Those breaks also give more of an up and down feel which adds to the emotional ride you experience when watching Get Out, and it’s a nice touch. To be honest I had my doubts at first, but Peele stomped them out with this insane movie.

Get Out is absolutely relentless when it reaches it’s peak, and it’s incredibly satisfying to watch. The cinematography in many ways carries the fear to new heights, whether it’s shocking stoicism or literally capturing someone’s mind whilst in limbo, it delivers.

Even if you’re not much of a fan of horror like I was, I highly recommend seeing Get Out. It’s truly a movie that has reached new grounds in film, everything about Get Out was totally different from what I’ve seen before in the genre and I pray this isn’t Peele’s one and only horror PROVIDED BY IMDb movie.

There are a few dry moments in the movie, parts that could’ve been scarier, scenes that didn’t need to be there. As thrilling as Get Out is, it didn’t leave me as scared as I wanted to be. Overall though, there’s no outstanding mistakes.

Truly the best way to watch this movie is by knowing nothing about it.

There are surprises littered throughout this movie, and all of them deliver.

Jordan Peele, the director and writer of the film, has done an excellent job for his directorial debut.

Although we can laugh at the outrageous back-andforth scuttles between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson now, this pattern of deception has developed progressively worse as information has become more freely available.

To be a journalist, one must keep an objective view and display all the facts to their readers. This distortion of reality took advantage of Yiannopoulos’s soft spot and damaged his image through treachery, not integrity.

SPORTS Sights on Gold: COD track and field athletes qualify for national tournament Hulon Ware · Reporter

Since the time of the ancient greeks, track and field is a sport that includes athletic contests established on the skills of running, jumping and throwing.

College of DuPage holds one of the finest winning traditions. Capturing a total of 31 national titles, eight of which are held by the Track and field department, DuPage County has had one of the most successful community college athletic programs in the nation within the past 20 years.

COD’s track and field program is nothing short of that standard. With

eight national titles under their belt,securing another title at the upcoming NJCAA tournament should be a walk in the park. The tournament this year will be hosted in Pittsburg, Kan. March 3-4.

Representing COD this year, we have our distance medley relay team, which consists of student athletes: Peyton Chapman, Brandon Vazquez, and Marco Martinez; 800 meter runner, Torrain Haughton; Triple jumper Joshua Jones; and nationally ranked pole vaulter, Nathaniel Wesolek.

tionals this year is Head Coach of COD Track and Field Bob Cervenka.

Coach Cervenka is a former state champion who brought home the title as a high jumper in 1976. Before coaching at DuPage, Cervenka moved to South Africa where he coached at two separate Olympic games and world championships.

Under the tutelage of Coach Cervenka,our student athletes have an excellent shot at bringing home our first National title for indoor track and field.

Nate knows he has what it takes to be the best. Nate grew up in West Chicago, where he attended West Chicago High School.

During his junior year, Nate took up pole vaulting.

“I love heights, and I’m an adrenaline junkie, and putting that in a competitive platform is something that I was very interested in.”

Attributing to Nate’s strong will is his brother,

Luke Wesolek. Luke is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. “Just seeing his strength is a huge inspiration to me. Just knowing that he is there makes me feel strong.”

With wonderful parents and a brother that loves him, Nate has more than what it takes to become No.1.

Ranked second among national pole vaulters, Nate will be looking to soar past the competition

Nate’s passion for pole vaulting can be summed up in one simple quote, “I know I can be the best.”

Popscuro – Clubz Genre: Synth Pop Sounds like: Ben Khan, She’s a Tease, El Guincho The name “Popscuro” is a clever amalgamation of the words “oscuridad”, the Spanish word for darkness, and “pop”– apropos to the bouncy synths and the dark, punched bass lines of Clubz’s latest single. It’s hard not to find yourself knee-deep dancing along to to the funk undertones and glossy embellishments as the octave-up layered vocals sing seductively to your ears in full Spanish.

Buddies – Quelle Chris Genre: Rap Similar to: Gensu Dean, Roc Marciano The amount of narcissism in this one track initially made me unbelievably uncomfortable. The reversed-sounding instrumentals in the background puts the listener into a mysterious setting, only accompanied by the egocentric lyrics of Quelle Chris talking about how he wants to be himself more often. The entire album is centered around the idea of how he wishes he could be his best self more often than he currently can acquire. —Lucas
