In the March 4 print issue, a news article regarding a board of trustees candidate forum reflected up-to-date reporting at the time of publication. The candidate forum, sponsored by the college’s adjunct association, will proceed as scheduled at 3 p.m. on March 11 in the Turner Conference Center, SRC 2000. ____________ In the March 4 print issue, a sports article about a track-and-field athlete preparing for the outdoor season misstated the university where assistant coach Ivan Tamba was recently employed at. Tamba recently worked at Illinois State University.

With student elections approaching, involvement remains an issue TAIRA ALABI NEWS EDITOR
Though the Student Leadership Council elections are coming up, student leaders say students are not readily involved in campus issues. Stephanie Torres, student body president and former student trustee, has experienced her fair share of lack of student engagement in campus issues. “It is a recurring issue,” Torres said. “If we knew how to solve that problem, it would be solved.” Despite College of DuPage’s nearly 30,000 students, getting even 5 percent of students involved in elections proves to be a problem. Last year, less than 1,000 students voted in the student elections. In an attempt to promote student voting, the office of student life has tried several different methods,
including moving from paper to online ballots. Stephanie Quirk, student life coordinator who oversees student elections, explained moving the ballot online has made voting easier for students. “We knew all of our students couldn’t get to campus to vote,” Quirk said. “We wanted this to be something that could be open to all students to vote at their convenience.” This year, in another attempt to boost participation in student elections, the office of student life has decided to move elections to the new online student portal, ChapLife. “The software is primarily for student clubs and organizations,” Quirk said. “There is a module specifically designed to do student elections.” According to Quirk, ChapLife is not yet readily accessible to most stu-
dents. “It has not been rolled out to all students yet, just student clubs,” Quirk said. “ It is a bit of a secret,” Quirk said. Quirk explained that every COD student has received a message in their student email account with instructions on how to vote through ChapLife.
‘Pizza with the President’ event rescheduled for later this month A student event featuring college President Robert Breuder has been rescheduled for March 24, according to student body President Stephanie Torres. Dubbed “Pizza with the President,” the event was supposed to coincide with the College of DuPage Adjunct Association’s March 11 trustee candidate forum. “We thought it was best, judging the timing of events,” Torres said, “it would have really been tight.” Torres and her fellow SLC members are helping the CODAA set up and clean up for the event. The March 24 date is tentative as the SLC must wait until the president confirms the date.

Thus, my top priority will be to represent and advocate for the needs of my peers.”

After the elections, Quirk hopes ChapLife can become a place where student clubs and organizations can get their word out about events. “There is no middle man, and we want students to connect to students,” Quirk said. SLC feels that student clubs are the key to getting
students involved. Torres believes that this is more powerful than other forms of advertising. “We are creating a better community,” Torres said. “Communication by word of mouth works better than ads.” Torres says talking to students on why they should care about campus issues is extremely pivotal to student involvement in elections. “If you can answer that question, then you have created a bond that can be strengthened,” Torres said. To create this bond, SLC members frequently speak to members of their classes about student issues and table to meet the students that they are trying to serve. SLC still employs other forms of advertising such as placing posters in busy places and posting information on their Facebook
page. “I want students to feel bombarded,” Torres said. Michelle Gallardo, student body vice president, admits though she wishes more students paid attention to key issues, she acknowledges the reasons behind their lack of interest. “This is a two-year school,” Gallardo commented. “People are very busy.” Torres is quick to note that COD is not alone in its battle for higher student engagement. “Whenever we go to other schools, they tell us they have the same issues,” Torres said.
Stay tuned for Courier endorsements and student election coverage codcourier.org.
In just a week, students will be able to vote for candidates for student body president, student body vice president and student trustee. This year, the student elections come in light of the upcoming board of trustees election and the process of selecting a replacement for COD President Robert Breuder.

Bookstore reopens to students and faculty KELLY WYNNE FEATURES EDITOR
The Folletts College of DuPage Bookstore hosted a grand re-opening March 4 after undergoing a renovation. The event included remarks by Follett President Don Germano and guest of honor, college President Robert Breuder, and a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Refreshments and cake were served as attendees mingled before the ceremony. A raffle was held and 25 names were drawn for the opportunity to win bookstore gift cards and a grand prize of a 7-inch Samsung tablet. Throughout the day, bookstore visitors were given 20 percent off all merchandise to celebrate. When faculty and students entered the newly redesigned store they were greeted with mass amounts of open space. The bright and airy design drew crowds into the middle of the store.
The renovation, priced upwards of $250,000, focused mainly on creating an organized floor plan. Graphic wall designs caught the eye of attendees, as did the new checkout area located on the opposite side of the store. “It’s open, and it’s bright,” Breuder told The Courier. “The merchandise is first class. It makes me want to come in.” Breuder spoke of the strong bond between the college and Follett. He believed the company holds powerful buying power and will continue to bring students the best options while staying affordable. Overall, Breuder spoke of his pride for the college and the improvements being made. “This is as good as it gets, as I can tell,” said Breuder in his bookstore address. “We can compete with

The amount of merchandise has been expanded, providing opportunity in everything from academic finds to tech devices. What I’m most excited for this spring TAIRA ALABI NEWS EDITOR
This past week, we turned our clocks an hour forward and saw the snow on our front lawns finally begin to melt. Spring is almost here! As temperatures begin to heat up and floral smells fill the air, I am getting more and more excited for warm weather. Here are the top four things, I am excited for this spring.
1. Discover New Things in The City
Living in the suburbs of one of the busiest cities has it perks. While going to places like Navy Pier
and Millenium Park may seem touristy, use the good weather to explore neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Wicker Park and Lincoln Park. Walking around, trying new foods and taking pictures is a fun way to jump start spring.
2. New Music and Movies
With warmer weather in the air, it is a good time to listen to music while taking a walk through a park, or head to the movies with a few friends. In music, fans can look forward to musicians like Rihanna,
Chance the Rapper and Death Cab for Cutie to release albums this spring. In movies, franchise series like “Fast and Furious” and “Divergent” will premiere sequels this spring. Fans of comedy may also enjoy movies like “Get Hard” featuring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell.
3. Spring Foods
After months of denying myself of ice cream, milkshakes, and slurpees with the excuse that it was simply too cold, spring is when I can begin to indulge in all my favorite
cool treats. At McDonald’s, you can get a Shamrock Shake or a Blizzard at Dairy Queen.
4. Parking Wherever I Want During the winter, if I ever have to park far away from COD’s buildings, I become filled with the dread, walking through the blistering cold. In spring, however, that same half-mile walk becomes a pleasant stroll as I enjoy fresh air, good weather and getting in some much needed exercise.

Rob Bailey & The Hustle Standard released their second EP, “Go” on Feb. 24. Despite not being signed onto a label, the group has had great success on iTunes, reaching the number one album spot on the electronic chart, and also being in the top 20 chart. Being the husband of professional bodybuilder Dana Linn Bailey, and also the owner of his own fitness clothing brand, Rob Bailey is an influential individual in the fitness industry. When one listens to this album, it’s hard to deny that this album is heavily influenced towards people who are trying to listen to motivating music. With this being said, the album is listed under the electronic section of iTunes, meaning that it’s not created solely for fitness enthusiasts. The first song, “Go Forever,” sets the mood for the entire album. It shows listeners the album’s “heavy” sound upfront. This track
consists of an introduction from Rob Bailey saying how he is someone that always tries his best in life to stay motivated, and to never quit what he plans to accomplish. The message was nice, but during the duration of the song I realized that I most definitely didn’t want this song to go on forever. Basically a long mix of shouting, singing, and bass-heavy instrumentals, “Go Forever” defined the sound of the whole album. From start to finish, the album is full of high-energy vocals and leaves listeners with the question of how much work was spent on making each track unique. As stated earlier, the album starts off extremely hard and ends hard. The Hustle Standard hasn’t changed their style at all since their last releases, and begs the question of how the album gained its small success. While it’s great for an artist to maintain their roots and keep a similar sound to previous works,
Rob Bailey and The Hustle Standard should consider adding more variety to their future works. A fact to consider, as to how The Hustle Standard has been able to gain success, is that Bailey is married to a former Ms. Olympia, who has a huge following by her fans. There is no doubt that Dana Bailey’s following has contributed to Rob Bailey and The Hustle Standard’s success. With all of this being said, this album is one to be considered by people looking for motivating music to exercise with. Other than that, I couldn’t see myself, or many other people simply playing this music when they’re trying to relax, or enjoy in their headphones during their commute. With the combination of generic lyrics, an ear-scratching voice, and an overall generic sound shared on all of its tracks, I wouldn’t recommend this album to anyone.

OPINION
Waiting for the answers we deserve Recently, one of our own Courier staff members attempted to talk to College of DuPage President Robert Breuder about his upcoming retirement in March 2016. We say “attempted” because after exchanging pleasant conversation for a few minutes, she was immediately shut down and faced with the dreaded “no comment” upon mentioning the buyout. You may be thinking that this response is justified, and in theory, it is. Breuder has as much of a right to plead the fifth as the next person, and besides, haven’t we talked about the buyout enough already? The Breuder controversy has been the focus of countless articles, ranging from the Courier to suburban newspapers to the front page of the Chicago Tribune. Surely everyone has had more than their share of voice in the matter. That is, everyone but Breuder himself. Students, faculty, community members, and the press have all thoroughly discussed the buyout. Breuder hasn’t said a word. It’s likely that a team of advisers has told him to stay quiet, as every crimeshow lawyer does with their guilty client. He’s
shutting up and staying away from the press as much as possible to keep from damaging his reputation any further. We get it. But he’s still a full year away from retirement. He has to speak up at some point, if only because there are issues that truly need to be addressed. Perhaps Breuder is keeping quiet because he knows he doesn’t have answers anyway. What would he say, for instance, if asked what he regrets as president? Would he regret sending former Governor Pat Quinn a contentious email asking the state for $20 million dollars to build the Teaching and Learning Center? Would he regret spending school funding on expensive dinners with the Board of Trustees at Waterleaf restaurant over winter break? And what would he say if asked about why our full time faculty had completely no confidence in his abilities as a president? It certainly says something that the highest paid community college faculty in the state feels so strongly against their school’s president. If
LUCAS KOPROWSKI/COURIER
asked any of these questions, could he admit to his flaws, or would he simply hide behind his pride? By staying silent, it’s easy to infer the answer to that question. In which case, Breuder’s tactic of “shut up and sit down” is actually backfiring on him. At this point, it’s pretty clear that Breuder won’t be able to get himself out of hot water. He can, how-
ever, turn down the flame and own up to his actions, preferably by speaking to his college’s own student newspaper. We may be biased in our own favor, but it truly does make sense. If he talks to anyone, it should be COD students. Instead of turning us down for an interview, Breuder should welcome the idea of encouraging student journalists and
showing his support and respect. Today, March 11, would have been the perfect opportunity had Pizza with the President not have been canceled. It seems almost too convenient that Breuder had yet another out to escape the issues that he has tactfully avoided for months, forcing us to accept silence as an answer. hurting himself. He could have eased into talking to the press by starting on the college level, which would be a much better approach for him than diving head first into a massive press conference with almost every major publication in Chicagoland. Instead, he hides in his office and avoids his responsibility to the students. Breuder can’t ignore the reality of his situation forever, and when he finally realizes that, we will be here, waiting for the answers we deserve.

What’s important to note Waterleaf scandal KELLY WYNNE FEATURES EDITOR
On Sun. March 8, College of DuPage graced the front page of the Chicago Tribune with yet another statewide scandal. The article dug deep into costs spent by top-level administrators, particularly those of President Dr. Robert L. Breuder, at Waterleaf, COD’s five star restaurant. It was highlighted that checks collected by the president and senior managers have totaled over $190,000 and have been picked up by the college, using what is understood to be taxpayer money. While many of these purchases were spent on meals and parties, a large amount was spent on pricy alcohol, some noted to be for board
members at pre-boardmeeting parties. Along with these accusations it was revealed that Waterleaf has lost over $2 million since it’s opening in 2011. I think we can all agree that some changes are needed. While many college employees may disagree, I believe that Waterleaf is an important resource for students to have on campus. Its spotlighted faults weigh heavily on it’s mishandlings by the college’s administration. The restaurant may be in the red, but an educational establishment’s first priority should not be its revenue. Waterleaf would be better served as a completely
student-run organization focused on giving hospitality and culinary majors the best possible hands-on experience. The Tribune article speaks of the fact that Waterleaf is said to be a facility built for educational purposes, but only allows student access over the course of two classes. While it is implied that students get the first hand restaurant experience when pursuing a hospitality or culinary degree, the reality is that students are only working the restaurant two days a week, Mon. and Tues., when there is little to no traffic. As a student who has taken one hospitality class
at the college, I cannot speak with extensive first hand knowledge, but I can say that the Waterleaf experience is highly stressed. The program’s coursework depends on in-house experience in both Waterleaf and Wheat Café, each of which the Culinary and Hospitality Center is proud to include. Having a five star dining experience for students to operate, even in small stretches, gives all in the culinary and hospitality departments a hand up over students elsewhere with no behind the scenes experience. The problem is this learning resource is being misused by those higher up on campus. Could this
be partially to blame for the major financial loss of the restaurant? Maybe, but what really sticks out as a problem to me is those making the college’s most public decisions are having parties, alcohol included, before they head to work. The checks racked up by college employees are hard to defend but I’m going to let Breuder off the hook for this one. Another finger has been pointed at our recently villainized president, but in this case he is just one of many committing the same offense. Yes, his bills are the lengthiest at Waterleaf, and putting those expenses on the college is a bogus move, but this
fault is on the college’s hands because they have continuously encouraged the behavior by paying off each tab. The only thing we know for sure is the future of Waterleaf looks shaky. Media focus is bound to stay on the administration’s heels, hoping to expose more behind-closed-doors meal deals. As students, it is important to focus on the establishment’s purpose. This is a place mainly provided for our learning experience. There may be nothing we can do about the financial deficit, but we can voice our opinion on the restaurants’ benefit to our educations. Have you ever tried smoked pate or croque madame? College of DuPage is home to a fine dining restaurant, called the Waterleaf. Located in the Culinary and Hospitality Center, the restaurant serves entrees ranging in price from $12 to $38. The Courier asked students if they have eaten some of the options offered at the Waterleaf. For reference, a croque madame is described as a sandwich with “ham, swiss cheese, bechamel sauce, fried egg and frites.” Smoked pate is an appetizer dish made of ground smoked meat that has been minced into paste. White Sox
Offseason moves
Acquired: LHP Jon Lester, CF Dexter Fowler, C Miguel Montero, RHP Jason Motte, RHP Jason Hammel, C David Ross, Manager Jon Madden
Pitching
The Cubs pitching staff isn’t loaded with depth like a lot of the top contenders in the National
League, but Cubs fans shouldn’t be too concerned. Former Red Sox legend, Jon Lester, is bound to have another amazing year on the bump and will lead this young group of players throughout the season. One of the under-the-radar moves that a lot of people have not paid due diligence to is the resigning of pitcher Jason Hammel. He posted an
impressive 2.98 ERA while walking only 23 batters in 17 starts for the Cubs last year. He should continue his success. As for the rest of the staff there should be good competition for the last spot in the rotation with Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood both jocking to cement their place on the team.

Offseason Moves
Acquired: RHP Jeff Samardzija, OF Melky Cabrera, 1B Adam LaRoche, Emilio Bonifacio, CL David Robertson
Pitching
The White Sox have arguably the best one-two punch at the top of the rotation in the AL. Chris Sale and his awkward, yet effective, delivery has
kept batters off balanced the last two seasons and he could be a Cy Young candidate if he stays healthy. Jeff Samardzjia, who was recently acquired from the A’s, also has the talent to be the Sox’s ace if Sale goes down. Jose Quintana fits in perfectly in the third spot and will hopefully pick up where he left off last season. The Sox will benefit from having
a shutdown closer this season as David Robertson has proved he can deliver on the big stage.
Hitting
Like the Cubs, a lot of things have to go right for the White Sox lineup this year. Now that pitchers have game tape on 1B Jose Abreu they might be able to figure out some holes in his swings. The sophomore continued on page 16

Cubs The Cubs are hoping that their bet on their younger stars is going to pay off in the short term. They are projected to have three rookies starting for them this year all of whom have very limited time in the majors. That being said, general manager Theo Epstein did a great job of bringing in a core of veterans to compliment the young talent around them. Dexter Fowler will hopefully bring some consistency at the top of the order to set up first baseman Anthony Rizzo and rookie Jorge Soler, who was raw power to all fields. This is a boom or bust year for the Cubs lineup.
X-Factor
3B Kris Bryant Scouts are raving about Bryant’s hitting ability and think he will be an MVP someday. He might start the year in the minor leagues despite his bat being ready for major league pitching. If projected starter Mike Olt struggles early on, Bryant would be the
White Sox first option to replace him and would be penciled in the heart of the Cubs lineup. If he gets his chance, look for Bryant to destroy major league pitching and compliment Rizzo in the middle of the lineup.
Bold Prediction:
Anthony Rizzo wins the National League MVP award This man is a beast at the plate, plain and simple. Last year his slash line was .286/.386/.527 to go along with his 32 long balls. Now that he has protection behind him pitchers will have to be less conservative around him which will lead to more Rizzo home run trots.
slump is pretty common for successful young stars. If he does continue to mash major league pitching, having Melky Cabrera will slide in nicely in the two spot in the lineup to set up Abreu. Adam LaRoche will probably hit around .230 this year but it is almost a guarantee that he will hit 20 plus home runs as he has done 10 times in his 11 years in the big leagues.
the Cy Young this year (he finished third in the voting last year). Sale is a complete pitcher who can throw in the upper 90’s and stay dominant late into games. Now that his team has solidified the middle of the lineup, his win total should sky rocket from a year ago.
Playoffs?
The AL Central is going to be very competitive this year which makes me feel X Factor less optimistic about the 3B Connor Gillespie Sox’s chances this year. Gillespie had a successHowever, they do have the ful 2014 campaign as his talent to snatch one of the batting average went up 37 Wild Card spots. With points. If he can replicate Detroit losing their ace at what he did last year and the top of their rotation hit consistently on a daily and the Royals failure to basis, Gillespie will create keep some of their key Playoffs? depth in a lineup that is pieces to last year’s World I don’t see the Cubs top of the order heavy. Series team, the Sox could winning the World Series surprise everyone and take this year but they definitely Bold Prediction the Central but they are have the talent to be in Chris Sale wins 20 more likely to be a Wild contention for a wild card games despite being on the Card contender. spot. If the young bats DL to start the season prove they can be consisBefore he fractured his tent contributors, watch foot in spring training, out. Sale would have been my front runner for winning
Who is the better team?
The Cubs Though both teams are close to each other in terms of talent, adding Madden gives the Cubs the edge. Madden completely changed the atmosphere in Tampa Bay and made them a winning team after years of being the laughing stock of the American League. He has a natural talent for connecting with players and having them buy into his team-first mentality.

COFFEE BREAK
1 ‘CBS This Morning’
Four TV news shows to watch Chances are, “The Daily Show” is the only thing remotely close to a TV news program that college students watch. And students’ primary source of getting news increasingly comes from social media. But hear me out: there are definitely other TV shows worth looking into in order to get more authority and depth from your news consumption.
Tired of “Good Morning America” or “Today?” Try “CBS This Morning.” Helmed by veteran anchor Charlie Rose, Oprah’s best friend Gayle King, and former White House correspondent Norah O’Donnell, this morning show puts news at the forefront. Instead of cooking segments and interviews with contestants from “The Bachelor,” viewers will find more refined reporting and engaging information. “CBS This Morning” airs 7 a.m. weekdays on CBS.
2 ‘The Lead with Jake Tapper’
The format of the show takes viewers on a wide range of the day’s stories, something to be appreciated if you don’t have a lot of time. But it is Jake Tapper’s deftness at the anchor desk that really makes the show worth watching. Politics is at the heart of the show, and Tapper shows his skills off when he grills policymakers on both sides of the aisle. “The Lead” airs 3 p.m., central time, weekdays on CNN.
3 ‘PBS Newshour’
Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff deliver the news in a straightforward fashion typical of public television. “Newshour” starts off with a roughly 10-minute news summary of the day’s top headlines. For the rest of the program, viewers can expect longer, in-depth story packages and interviews. “Newshour” may come off as dry and boring for some, but its featured stories inform and enlighten in a way the competition can never pull off. “PBS Newshour” airs 6 p.m., central time, weekdays on PBS.
4 ‘CBS Evening News’
The “Evening News” is the definition of an evening TV news digest. Like its network morning counterpart, the “Evening News” covers more hard news than the competition. Yes, its viewership leans older in terms of age, but anchor Scott Pelley has an authoritative and eloquent presence, in the spirit of Walter Cronkite’s legacy. “CBS Evening News” airs 5:30 p.m., central time, weekdays on CBS.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to The solutions will be published here in the next issue. see how ‘straights’ are formed.
