PERFECT DAY IN LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND

Resting lakeside and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the small city of Lucerne is where European culture, history, and the great outdoors come together. From the region’s famed Park Hotel Vitznau, here’s how to spend a day exploring this must-visit Swiss destination.

7:00am

With the fresh alpine air beckoning, you’ll want to be early to rise and fuel up for a big day; the Park Hotel Vitznau will bring you a selection of strong coffee and a Croque Monsieur with truffle butter, Lucerne ham, and some of the region’s famed cheese from the breakfast buffet.

8:30am

Step aboard one of the hotel’s luxury vessels for a boat tour of Lake Lucerne, which, after summer fades, becomes resplendent with fall colors. Once the tour is finished, you’ll disembark at the city center.

10:30am

Stroll along Lucerne’s picturesque waterfront, past its famous performing arts center and across the region’s most iconic landmark: the 14th-century Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) spanning the River Reuss. Now in the Old Town, continue on to view the mournful Lion of Lucerne, a powerful monument to Swiss Guardsmen who died during the French revolution.

11:00am

Walking south, pop into Max Chocolatier, considered one of the best chocolate shops in all of Switzerland. Feast on some handmade truffles, single origin bars, dragée, or any other impressive delicacy on offer.

12:00pm

It’s time for lunch at the Mediterranean-inspired Grottino 1313, one of Lucerne’s best-kept dining secrets. Tucked away behind an iron gate south of the train station, it offers a menu that changes daily and an ambience so charming, it’s easy to linger over a glass of wine long after your meal is done.

1:30pm

A 20-minute walk east toward the water brings you to a site that celebrates Switzerland’s love of classical music: the Richard Wagner Museum. It’s located in Tribschen — the country home where this renowned composer completed several of his scores — and features Wagnerrelated exhibits as well as an outdoor café that’s open throughout the summer and early fall.

3:00pm

Back at the dock, your ride home has arrived. Relax during a scenic boat trip to the hotel.

3:30pm

Unwind from your adventures with a book or visit the hotel’s spa; along with a soothing massage or facial, take in dazzling mountain views from the outdoor infinity pool.

6:30pm

Magic hour calls for a journey along the Path of Small Truths, located just opposite the hotel. This easy 45-minute forest walk takes you past rushing waterfalls and offers wisdom from hiking philosopher Ben Rakidzija along the way.

8:00pm

Your day ends with dinner at focus ATELIER, Hotel Park Vitznau’s two Michelin star restaurant. Led by chef Patrick Mahler, experience course after course of Swiss fine dining at its best, with seasonally-inspired dishes such as roe venison with chanterelles, chicory, and currants paired with exquisite wines from across Europe.
