PERFECT DAY IN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO

Whether for a week or a weekend, Mexico City is an endlessly dynamic destination. From your hotel at the center of it all — the luxurious Sofitel Mexico City Reforma — here’s how to spend a day in the captivating neighborhoods of Roma, Condesa, and Polanco.

7:30am

At the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma, you can ease into your morning with a smoothie of grapefruit, celery, pineapple, spinach, ginger and nopal (prickly pear cactus), alongside some addictive Oaxaqueñan chocolate porridge.

9:00am

A three-minute walk brings you to the Ángel de la Independencia, an eye-catching landmark with a 22-foot tall golden statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, set atop a 118-foot column. The monument was built to commemorate the 1910 Centennial of the Mexican Revolution.

10:00am

Your journey into Mexico’s past continues with a visit to the 18th-century Chapultepec Castle, the only North American building that’s served as an official royal residence to European sovereigns. As part of the National Museum of History that now occupies it, enjoy perusing historic murals and exhibits as well as rooms once occupied by Mexican Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota. There are also impressive parklands below, making the trip up to the castle worth it for the views alone.

12:00pm

For lunch, it’s tough to beat chef Gabriela Cámara’s wildly popular seafood at Contramar. Feast on dishes like grilled fish with chili and parsley, tuna tostadas, and green shrimp aguachile, all complemented by citrusy and refreshing palomas.

1:30pm

After lunch, a 15-minute walk south brings you to Mercado Roma, a gourmet food market where you can pick up dessert. A trip east will bring you to the delightful Casa Bosques, a sunlit shop with a curated collection of books, stationary, art, and its own handmade artisanal chocolate.

3:30pm

Back at the hotel, relax in your room before dinner, visit the spa, or head to the hotel’s 38th floor swimming pool — complete with a hot tub and expansive views of Mexico City.

7:00pm

Depart the hotel and head west into the heart of Polanco, one of the city’s most fashionable areas. Dinner is at Pujol, a restaurant run by chef Enrique Olvera, serving refined and elegant Mexican dishes inspired by indigenous ingredients. Consistently ranked amongst the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for its reimagined fine dining, Pujol will take you on a delicious immersion into Mexico’s rich culinary history.
