The mysticism of the Australian trumpet,
known
as
the
"didgeridoo", has found in the musician Dan Flynn new modes of expression, transcendent emotions and danceable beats. His experience
as
a
drummer
enriches his unique approach, as he integrates
simultaneously
the
didgeridoo and various percussion
accessories to produce a sound best described as "organic electronica". The sound is often referred to as "astral" or "cosmic".
DidgeriDan, as he is called, recently finished an epic two-and-a-half-year road trip with his cat ("Socks Diablo") through most of Latin America. They started in Oregon and drove his
motorhome all the way to Argentina, teaching workshops and presenting his show "The Space Caravan" in Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Chile, Argentina and Brasíl. His melodic
playing style on a traditionally "drone" instrument has had a large impact on the didgeridoo-player scene in all of those countries; and his influence reaches to Europe and beyond.
Defining himself as a "one-man band", Dan's innovative musicianship is further complemented by his use of digital mixing and experiments with electronic accessories. For instance, he has turned speakers into microphones and kick-drums, and he places a piezo-electric sensor directly on his throat in order to enhance the vocalizations that are made while didgeridooing. A key trademark of his sound is his use of the delay effect as a kind of metronome, creating an "echoplex" which adds a psychedelic dimension to the music. All of these things together result in a complete sound--filling the role of all the voices in a band.
"Whoever hears his music says it sounds like electronica, but it is completely organic" Quique Polanco - Producer and Manager, Yucatรกn.
Dan designs and builds his own didgeridoos. He is a member of an experimental team of scientists and artists led by Dr. Frank Geipel in Germany. Using Dr. Geipel's "directed evolution" tool (Computer Aided Didgeridoo Sound Design, or CADSD) they are able to design didgeridoos tuned to specific musical scales--an impossibility using traditional crafting techniques. This game-changing innovation tremendously enhances the melodic potential of an instrument which, up until now, was primarily played as a drone.
Dan has played in a variety of venues, including festivals, public spaces, dance clubs, bars, holistic centers, weddings, birthday parties, and businesses. As highlights of his Latin American tour, he was a headliner in both Mexico's and BrasĂl's first annual didgeridoo gatherings ("Primer Encuentro Nacional de Didgeridoo y Trompeta Maya" 2014; "Didge Fest BrasĂl" 2015). He is also a regular headliner at North America's longestrunning and largest didgeridoo gathering, known as the "Indidjinus" festival in Oregon. Stateside, Dan has also presented in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz, California; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Salt Lake City, Utah; Asheville, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Key West, Florida.
Since 2014 Dan has been a member of a cultural collective in Latin America, known as "Patio Central", based in YucatĂĄn, MĂŠxico.
