PLATFORM UNIVERSITY of HOUSTON MEDICAL SCHOOL The design began with the idea of connecting the two opposing sides of the freeway and weaving them back together. To the east side of the freeway is the third ward. Although the ward system in Houston has been discontinued, the name sicks with the rough reputation of the area between 288/59 to the University of Houston. On the west side of the freeway there is the area known as Midtown, an on the rise community that has prospered from it’s segregated counterpart. With Houston as a whole being a vastly diverse and culturally driven city it is important to embrace all aspects of the city and promote all communities and neighborhoods. This project grows on the need for connection in the city while promoting public mixed use space and higher education. The University of Houston has publicly released that they would like to have a medical program by 2020. Houston has one of the largest and most advanced medical centers in the nation. This proposal would not only enhance the universities image but give back to the surrounding communities , though services and career opportunities. Creating sight lines for pedestrians formed the ground plane of the structure. To provide more window walls for the interior and also promote green space the building was divided with two mirroring sides in a traditional style. The Ƥ and the med center were provided. the buildings location provides easy access from current and future rail systems that run from the major universities to the Texas Medical Center.

Sun | Shadow Study
FOUNTAIN
This study was used to help determine the buildings orientation as well as glazing vs. solid facade treatment. Since the building’s facade is mostly glazing it was important to utilize shading devices to minimize the direct sun while still providing well lit spaces. As the bottom two images show, a variation of horizontal and vertical shading devices were used to mitigate the sun as necessary for its angle and position to the sun. This simulation was repeated around various areas of the building to give the structure a functional and aesthetically pleasing exterior.
