EXTERIOR PATIO The patio space is formed by a bolted galvanized steel structure wrapped in IPE slats. A building signage pylon which doubles as an exterior fireplace anchors the open patio space. The pylon is wrapped in preweathered steel sheets and features stainless steel restaurant signage. IPE slats were also used as a backdrop to the illuminated channel letter signage above the entrance.

INTERIOR GRAPHICS Many of the interior walls were covered with adhesive applied vinyl graphics. All graphics were designed in house. This black and white graphic is located along the back wall of the restaurant and it follows the chronological story of LSU fans in Death Valley using yearbook photographs.

DESIGN LSU as a client demands certain architectural styles in all of the campus buildings to conform with aesthetic uniformity. The facility’s street frontage pays homage to the LSU motif through carefully chosen formal proportions, stucco archwork and a continual brick wainscot.

Tables and chairs allow for dining and study. The coach’s office provides a partitioned space to intimately speak with recruits with a direct view to the campus stadium.

CF INDUSTRIES DONALDSONVILLE, LOUISIANA
FIRM HOLDEN ARCHITECTS STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
ABOUT CF Industries is a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing facility located on the Mississippi River. The client wishes to add two additional buildings to house engineering and maintenance operations for the facility. The design focuses on functional space planning and site planning strategies. Formally both buildings relate to one another to form a single composition of distinctly separated materials such as solid brick mass walls, aluminum panel rain-screens, aluminum shading louvers, and aluminum curtain walls. The strict ruleset incorporated during the formal making process of the buildings reflects the nature of the work within the buildings that set themselves apart from the industrial feel of the surrounding facility.

DESIGN A majority of office space is placed along the exterior walls of the design. This allows for the bulk of interior space to be used in an open office format to minimize corridor runs in an effort to produce a more comfortable working environment.

EXTERIOR PATIO The addition embellishes the formal characteristics of the house without taking attention away from the existing structure. Eaves, roof slopes, windows styles, and brick wainscots were maintained. Barn style doors, a hay bale ridge board and door, and a barn style roof vent were used to give the addition a ranch style Accadian feel to complement the client’s characteristics and nearby horse pasture.

DRAWINGS The drawings were created using a combination of computer modeling with pen and ink hand rendering. Photographs and measurements were also used to assist in the rendering process. The drawings accurately document brickwork as it appears today. The computer model was also used to visualize the formal changes of the interior space during the process of conversion from a Christian church to an Islamic Mosque.

FISH MARKET DARSENA NORTE, BEUNOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
ADVISOR DAVID BERTOLINI STATUS COMPLETED
ABOUT The north dock in Buenos Aires is in a state of transition from abandoned industrial port to usable recreation and commercial space. The design of the market reconnects the north dock with the urban grid by breaking through existing street, rail, and sky scrapper barriers. The permeability of the design spontaneously engages the participant, inducing a bond with the structure through that participation.

DESIGN The design of the market is influenced by themes explored in the movie The Cove, which documents the malpractices of dolphin fisherman in Japan. The message that the design suggest is that humans obliviously over abuse their resources because they are unaware of where their resources come from. Instead of separating manufacturing from consuming, the market visually connects the processing of fish with the selling of fish. This is done with a long blood drain running through each space. The resulting uncomfortable atmosphere and spatial conditions create an emotion inside the participant that educates and moves him.
26
PASSIVE STRATEGIES Relating back to the over arching concept, the building structure is also aware to avoid over abuse of its resources. Using passive cooling, proper day lighting, solar energy, and natural earth insulating strategies, the market becomes a representative of the renovated north dock region. The structure stands as a symbol for something larger than itself as a leader in sustainable practices.

INTERIOR ATMOSPHERE The arrangement of spaces is very similar to the nave and side isles of a Christian church, which brings even more emphasis to the center space of the market. Ceilings within the processing space are very high to allow for the air and odor to rise away and sunlight to enter within.

CHINATI ART CONSERVATION FACTILITY MARFA, TEXAS
ADVISOR URSULA EMERY MCCLURE STATUS O.J. BAKER COMPETITION 2ND PLACE
ABOUT The Chinati Foundation houses many of the works by the artist Donald Judd. Art and architecture are woven together here into one aesthetical experience; Judd’s sculptures are designed specifically for the spaces that house them. The art is nonrepresentational, rejects illusionism, and simply exists; the sculptures are made from industrial process and stable materials ruled by symmetry and mathematical precision. The design for the new conservation facility attempts to fuse Judd’s qualities with expressional concepts. As a sculptural art piece, the building consists of two contrasting formal elements; a long rectangle for the conservation spaces and a pile of haphazardly stacked Judd-esque concrete pieces for the visitor cafe.

SITING The siting of the building accomplishes four objectives; framing the entrance to the adjacent structure, allowing for passive cooling strategies, allowing for views of the entire facility, and finally to become a visual anchor to the facility.
30
DESIGN Spaces within the leaning rectangle feel as though they were subtracted volumes carved from the mass. Below and shaded by the rectangle, the concrete pieces are arranged in a way that encourages human interaction. Presentation sketches were used to explain these concepts.

DRAWINGS The leaning rectangle is structured with a steel box truss and is cladded in stained concrete. The arrangement of spaces allows for building tours without disruption of ongoing conservation work.

MARSH MEMORIAL COCODRIE, LOUISIANA
ADVISOR URSULA EMERY MCCLURE STATUS COMPLETED
ABOUT The marsh memorial serves as a space dedicated to the memory and loss of the Louisiana coastline. The journey through the design reveals two contrasting spaces; one open to canoe upon arrival, and one that must be discovered, both visually connected to one another by the pilings of a disconnected foot bridge.
PROFESSIONAL
INDEPENDANT
ACADEMIC
33
DESIGN The antechamber of the entry space is calm and whole, fully constructed with roof and side walls. It is the image of how the marsh is now. The visitor enters the marsh onto the footbridge, where he sees Cocodrie and experiences the qualities of the marsh. As he turns the corner, the bridge comes to an end, framing the second space. The bridge feels as though it was once whole, a ruin of the past. Traveling to the second space is done alone, being that it is much slimmer than the first space. Without a southern wall and roof, exposed to the sun with his feet in the water, the vistior feels open to the harsh environment as his sits alone with the last remaining piece of marsh enclosed in concrete.
