New Models = Discounts on Old Models

By PATRICK RALL Torque News

T

he Ford F-150 and the rest of the F-Series lineup have been selling in incredible numbers over the past 18 months, but as the arrival of the all new 2015 F-150 draws near, sales of the current F-150 have slowed as consumers are likely waiting for the launch of the next generation Ford pickup – either to buy that new model or to try to score a deal on a current model. Through the first six months of 2014, Ford has sold more than 365,000 F-Series pickups and the bulk of those numbers are F-150 sales. Ford started 2014 with strong growth in January, February, March and April, but starting in May there was a drop in sales followed by a bigger drop in June. While some will try to use an F-Series sales drop as a problem of some sort, it was easily predictable after the debut of the 2015 F-150 in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A sales drop shortly before the debut of any brand new model is to be expected and when this predictable sales decline hits a vehicle that sells in such incredible numbers as the Ford F-150, it has what looks to be a much bigger impact than it does on a slowerselling vehicle. This drop happens because prospective consumers hold off on making their purchase until the next generation arrives in showrooms and they do this for a variety of reasons.

We all want the latest and greatest F-150 The 2015 Ford F-150 is expected to arrive within the next few months so people who are looking to buy a new F-150 right now are likely willing to wait a few more months to have a newer and presumably better truck. These buyers want to see the new F-150 in person in different colors and in different trimlines. Most importantly, they want to be able to drive the next generation F-150 before buying a 2014 model. After all, no one likes to spend $50,000 on a truck only to find out that the similarly priced newer model is a whole lot better.

When the 2015 Ford F-150 begins arriving in dealerships around the country, there will almost surely still be plenty of 2014 F-150 pickups at dealerships all over the country. Both the dealerships and Ford Motor Co. will want to get these 2014 models off of the lots as quickly as possible, as we can expect to see more wiggle room for dealerships and more incentives from the automaker to buy these “old” trucks. In other words, even if you are 100 percent sure that you want a 2014 F-150 and not a 2015 F-150, waiting until the 2015 models arrive could save you some big money on the 2014.

The 2015 Ford F-150 is all new and sports many improvements over last year’s model.

Slow sales now lead to monster numbers later

The good news for Ford – and for any company rolling out a brand spanking new model – is that the dip in sales leading up to the arrival of a new model is generally followed by a spike. With a vehicle like the 2015 Ford F-150, which is expected to be better in every functional way over the 2014 F-150, I expect to see a gigantic sales spike. The first and biggest group of 2015 F-150 buyers will be the normal influx of people who are just snatching up a brand new truck. More than 60,000 people went out and bought a new Ford truck last month and we can expect just as many people to go out to buy the 2015 F-150 when it becomes available. Next, there will most certainly be people who have preordered a 2015 Ford F-150 so preorders will help drive up the sales in the first few months after the 2015s arrive. Finally, we have the people who I talked about above; the people who have specifically held off for the new models rather than buying a 2014 F-150 and the people who have waited for the 2015s to arrive to get a bigger discount on the 2014 models. In other words, while the Ford F-Series sales might be down right now, look for huge sales later this year when the 2015 F-150 hits dealerships. Ford is on pace to sell around 730,000 F Series trucks right now, but I expect the final numbers at the end of 2014 to be much higher than that. ■

PRIUS v Toyota hybrid aims for ‘family-friendly’ buyers

By HAWKE FRACASSA Managing editor There is much to like about Toyota’s Prius v. The v – as in “v” for “versatility” – is the consummate fuel-efficient midsize hybrid for discerning Americans, with cargo space to die for and room for five people. The v not only delivers at least 44 miles per gallon when performing at peak efficiency, but also offers more space in back of the driver than 75 percent of the SUVs out there. Um, yeah, and it’s got a moonroof and push-button start, too. Forget the key. That’s so old school. The v starts at $26,750 for 2014 and targets busy families who have places to go and people to see. That makes the v “family friendly.” To punctuate that point, it comes with five cupholders and SofTex material on its seats. This is important because SofTex is more lightweight than previous materials that have been used on Prius models, and it’s easy to clean up things that might spill. As a silly amenity, Toyota offers room in the back to store umbrellas – one for each member of the family.

Why it’s popular

The mantra for the v is to stay big on cargo space and stingy on fuel consumption. Since its introduction in August 2012, the Japanese and transplant carmaker has stayed on the fast track by introducing a plug-in Prius and a smaller Prius c. There were a few gawks and raised eyebrows from young people as this version of the Prius was tested, but for the most part, the v – even a fire engine red one that I drove – drew scant notice from people over 21. Regardless, Toyota is puffing out its chest like a proud papa. “The Prius family will define our future,” Ed LaRocque, national marketing manager-advanced technology vehicles for Toyota, said. It’s hard to argue with LaRocque’s assessment about the Prius’s value to Toyota. The Prius already has 53 percent of the hybrid market.

4

WHEELS (307) | AUGUST 2014

Toyota’s hybrid Prius v has more cargo room than three-quarters of the sport-utility vehicles on the market today – even though it’s a midsize car. Toyota has stood out for years in developing global trust in hybrid technology. Skeptics, for the most part, have piped down about the Prius. It’s a great car, and just about everyone knows it.

How hybrid works

The Prius v brings leadingedge hybrid technology to customers who need more room.

Toyota employs a Hybrid Synergy Drive function to get its amazing mpgs on the v. The system gives this Prius outstanding mileage, low emissions and no need for recharging. The system uses two high-output motors – an 80 horsepower unit for the transaxle and a smaller motor that is the vehicle’s electric power source. Power sourcing is part of the v’s charm. Energy can come from one motor or the other, or a mix of both. An internal computer controls where the power comes from, based on driver need. The v comes with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The engine is as quiet as a church mouse, as is usually the case with Priuses.

Toyota considers the car a valuedriven option for discerning buyers. “The Prius v brings leading-edge hybrid technology to customers who need more room,” said Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota. “It produces 66 percent fewer smogforming emissions than the average new vehicle and has the best mileage ratings of any SUV, crossover or wagon Bob Carter sold in America.” Toyota general manager Toyota has a lot riding on its old standby, the Prius. But it’s hardly a risk. The best-selling hybrid car in the world might be 16 years old, but as the Prius name gets older, the 2.1 millionplus people who keep buying it are saying with their wallets that it’s getting better. The Buy American movement has Toyota’s attention. The v is assembled in Japan, but Toyota continues to examine the possibility of building the cars in America, spokeswoman Celeste Migliore said. Toyota considered making the v in Blue Springs, Miss., but instead makes Corollas there.

Differentiating the v

You would expect the v to have fuel-efficient bells and whistles, and of course, it does. This Prius drives in normal, electric (EV), economy (ECO) and power modes, to use the right energy for the right situation. The v has a top speed in EV mode of just 35 mph. That means it really can’t be driven on the freeway because it’s too slow. Besides the varying modes, what makes the v different than previous models is its roominess. Even though it looks like a car, the v in actuality has more space than some Detroit Three SUVs. Cargo space is 58 percent larger than other Prius models, LaRocque said. Toyota brags that even with the v being taller and wider and heavier than other Prius models, its engineers have achieved an exceptional .29 coefficient of drag. That is up from .25 on the other cars. Even so, on the freeway, drivers can feel the heft. The v sways at 80-plus mph speeds that amplify wind noise. And that’s after the wind has whooshed through fins that Toyota put on the car especially to hush things down. But make no mistake – the v is not a cow. Even though it is not its svelte self with the extra space inside, it still gets incredible mileage – 44 mpg on the expressway and 40 mpg in city driving. Please see PRIUS, page 12

TRUCK BUYERS They’re thinking green, going green By HAWKE FRACASSA Managing editor

A

J.D Power and Associates study has an important finding for environmentalists. It concludes after a five-year study that “many truck owners are thinking green.” Although implementation of green technology is not widespread in the commercial trucking industry, the study says 16 percent of owners say they are “certain” or “practically certain” that they would buy a truck from a greenrated manufacturer rather than a manufacturer without a green rating. “Green ratings and technology are areas where manufacturers can differentiate themselves from the rest of the industry,” said Brent Gruber, senior manager of the commercial vehicle practice at J.D. Power and Associates. “Manufacturers that invest in green technology and widely incorporate it in their trucks will have a considerable advantage in a very competitive market.” The U.S. Medium-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction Study was based on responses from 1,037 primary maintainers of 2010 model-year Class 5, 6 and 7 conventional cab medium-duty trucks. The top brand ratings went to Hino,

Many truck owners are thinking green. J.D. Power Freightliner and then Ford Motor Co. Hino performed well across all factors of driving satisfaction, particularly in engine satisfaction and overall quality. Freightliner made a significant jump from last year, primarily due to ownership satisfaction improvement. The study measured customer perceptions of trucks. Within the product index, six factors were used to determine overall satisfaction: Engine, warranty, cost of operation, cab and body, ride / handling / braking and transmission. The study also measured satisfaction with services received from an authorized truck dealer. Six factors comprise the service index: Service facility, service quality, service advisor, service initiation, service delivery and service price. ■

hen all you make are trucks and SUVs, you’d better be good at making them. With the 2013 Acadia Denali, GMC delivers a stylish, solid SUV, with loads of standard features that makes it fun to drive. There is a lot to like about the Acadia. Available as either frontwheel or all-wheel drive (like our test vehicle), the Acadia is very nicely styled. It’s been redesigned for 2013, with a three-dimensional polished grille, redesigned lower front and rear fascias, body-colored lower cladding and rocker moldings and rear fascia, and dual flow-through chrome exhaust outlets integrated into the rear fascia. Fog lamps are standard, as are 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels (chrome wheels are optional), dual power folding heated outside mirrors, trailer hitch, roof rack, power rear liftgate and a power sunroof with second row skylight. Inside, the cabin is well put together. The cockpit has an almost spaceshiplike feel to it with a nice mixture of colors between the instrument panel and the ambient lighting. The ambient lighting includes the center console, center console cupholders and the door pull cups, and the center stack, and there are aluminum accents on the center console, door and dash. The instrument cluster includes a driver information center, and a tachometer and it’s laid out very well. The seven-passenger Acadia Denali comes with leather-appointed seats, which can be heated or cooled, and

they provide very good support. A memory feature is included and the driver’s seat is eight-way power adjustable. There’s plenty of room in the Acadia in both the front and rear seating areas. GM’s Smart Slide feature is standard, which allows quick access to the third row seating area. The second rows seat cushion flips up while the seatback slides forward, effectively compressing the space occupied by the seat with the pull of a lever. The system also allows the second row to be positioned fore/aft. When adjusted rearward, the second-row seat provides more legroom for tall passengers. When adjusted forward, it provides more storage space or more legroom for third-row passengers.

The Denali version of the Acadia gives you a whole lot of nice standard features; the power sunroof is included, as are leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, power windows, keyless entry, remote vehicle start, cruise control, and a rearview camera system. The standard Dave Menard audio system Dave’s Ride Reports is an Bose Premium AM/ FM/CD system with an auxiliary input for your mp3 player and a USB port. Satellite radio is also included for 90 days. This system includes eight speakers and Bluetooth for your phone. You can add a rear entertainment system and a navigation system, if you like ($2240). The new touchscreen display features full color, and the

GM’s Smart Slide feature is standard, which allows quick access to the third row seating area.

IntelliLink system allows you to stream audio from your phone, as well as make hands-free calls. As with all General Motors vehicles, OnStar is standard with the Acadia. With OnStar, you can make and receive calls handsfree, get updated vehicle diagnostics, ask for directions or restaurant recommendations, or summon emergency help at the touch of a button. The system also automatically calls for assistance in the event airbags are deployed. The Acadia is powered by a 3.6-liter DOHC engine, and is rated at 288 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T75 six-speed automatic transmission. It offers automatic grade braking, shift stabilization and hill start assist. There’s plenty of power and the shifts are smooth. The AWD version is rated at 18 mpg overall – 16 in city driving and 23 on the highway. No complaints with the way the Acadia handles. It features a MacPherson strut front suspension system that includes a direct-acting stabilizer bar and aluminum knuckles. In the rear, it’s a compact linked “H” design, which uses an isolated mounting system to reduce interior noise. Stabilitrak stability control with traction control is standard and the Acadia is easy to keep under control. As with all AWD vehicles, the turning circle is a bit larger than with 2WD. If you get in trouble, the Acadia comes loaded with airbags – dual frontal, side impact, and head curtain side airbags. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard. The Denali version of the Acadia comes a couple of nice safety features -- side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert systems. The systems use radar to watch spots the driver may not be able to see clearly, and provide visual and audio warnings. The GMC Acadia Denali starts at almost $48,000. Add the navigation and rear entertainment package, and you’re at a little over $52,000. This is a sharp-looking SUV that handles well, is a pleasure to drive, gives you versatility and comes with a ton of great features. It’s a nice package. Is it a $52,000 package? That’s your call. ■

CHRYSLER SRT-8

Quick spin shows 300 has power, class

By SCOTT WEINER Car Junkie

s e t o N

T

he Chrysler 300 has been around since 2005, serving as Chrysler’s full-size luxury sedan. So far, there have been two generations of the 300. Chrysler has its own in-house tuning company, Street and Racing Technology, or SRT for short. SRT took a Chrysler 300C and turned into the Chrysler 300C SRT-8, replacing the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine found in the standard 300C with a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 that produces 425 horsepower. With Chrysler releasing the second generation 300 in 2011, SRT got its hands on the car. At the 2011 New York International Auto Show, Chrysler revealed the next generation Chrysler 300 SRT-8. At the 2013 Houston Auto Show, I was able to take one out for a test drive. Unlike my test drive with the Dodge Charger SRT-8 Super Bee, I did not have a slow-moving car preventing me from unleashing the fury of an SRT vehicle. On the outside, the 300 SRT-8 looks like a standard Chrysler 300, but there are few minor changes. The chrome trim has been replaced with body color trim, a lower front fascia, larger exhaust tip and 20-inch aluminum wheels. The 300 SRT-8 also sits a half-inch lower to the ground than the standard 300, plus the 300 SRT-8 also has a sportier suspension and a Brembo brakes package. The interior is similar to other Chrysler 300s that I drove. The major difference is that the seat in the SRT-8 is stiffer than the seat in the 300S. I still had good head room and leg room behind the wheel of the 300 SRT-8. The 300 SRT-8 is powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, that produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 175 mph. On the test drive with the 300 SRT8, I had no cars in front of me, so I was able to unleash the fury of the engine. The 300 SRT-8 is quick. Compared to the 300S, the 300 SRT-8 has a stiffer, sportier

The 2015 Chrysler SRT-8 offers good muscle car performance for just under $50,000 and delivers with very sporty comfort. ride. It was stiff, but not too stiff for my comfort level. The 300 SRT-8 did not try to kill my back, unlike some other vehicles I have driven. For a car with a big engine, it was quiet inside the 300 SRT-8. This car has good muscle car performance. The Chrysler 300 SRT-8 goes for just under $50,000, which is over $1,000 more than the Dodge Charger SRT-8. Still, that is not bad for a full-size luxury four-door muscle car. The Chrysler 300 SRT-8 has been featured in “Breaking Bad.” The Chrysler 300 SRT-8 is playable in Forza Motorsport 4, Car Town a nd Car Town EX. Overall, the Chrysler 300 SRT-8 is a fun car to drive. It is a quick full-size sedan. It has a few minor differences on the exterior compared to the other versions of the Chrysler 300. It still feels luxurious on the inside, even with the stiffer ride. When I was in the Dodge Charger SRT-8 Super Bee, I was not able to test out the acceleration of the car since I had a slow-moving car in front of me. It was a different story with the Chrysler 300 SRT-8. I had nothing in front of me when I was on the road in the 300 SRT-8 and I could just nail it. I could feel my heart beat fast when I was in this car. The 300 SRT-8 has a sporty ride, but I was still comfortable

behind the wheel. If you want a muscle car with four doors, then check out the Chrysler 300 SRT-8. If you want a slightly softer ride from SRT, then go with the 300 SRT-8 over the Charger SRT-8. But if you want a slightly sportier ride, then go with the Charger SRT-8. Both are very good four-door muscle cars. If you want an American full-size sedan with a softer ride, go with the Charger or 300 that was not tuned by SRT, or go with the Cadillac XTS. SRT cars are for people who want to go quick. ■

WHEELS (307) | AUGUST 2014

By HAWKE FRACASSA Managing editor wo new concept RVs unwrap a trend for all to see: That buyers are starting to think smaller is better. This is because recreational vehicle makers have been aggressively seeking ways make product improvements to drive demand. Current owners are looking to downsize their RVs and prospective buyers are interested in purchasing entry-level units. “There are several key factors that are driving change in both the Class A and Class C recreational-vehicle markets,” said Dave Snitgen, VP of recreational and specialty chassis at Spartan Chassis, a U.S.-based RV manufacturer. Due to high fuel costs, Snitgen said, the trend of downsizing by both firsttime and repeat buyers has emerged. “Spartan Chassis has created two chassis concepts that we are confident will define the future design direction of the marketplace,” he said The 32-foot Class A chassis and 25-foot Class C chassis capture design features such as flexibility and adaptability.

32-foot concept truck A study by Harris Interactive indicates strong interest in smaller and more fuel-efficient RVs.

To target this growth within the Class A segment, Spartan developed a 32-foot concept truck that is a lightweight, maneuverable mid-size, diesel-pusher chassis. The concept features improved fuel efficiency and a smaller carbon footprint, as well as the traditional benefits of a rear diesel engine chassis such as low engine noise, increased power options and carrying capacity, according to a statement from Spartan.

25-foot concept chassis With more than 40 million disabled adults living in the U.S. and a growing baby-boomer generation, there is a need for a purpose-built, low-floor platform design, Spartan believes. The concept allows for four-corner kneeling. The kneeling feature, available at the touch of a switch, reduces entry step height to a level never before seen on an RV. This concept chassis provides manufacturers with the opportunity to expand their business to include RVs for customers with mobility and health concerns. Additional features include a Chevrolet G4500 gas and diesel chassis, air-ride suspension with and a threeyear / 50,000 mile limited chassis warranty. ■

Compact Luxury Sedans

CADILLAC ATS

It’s a quiet ride and fun to drive, too

The new Cadillac ATS is a front-engine, four door compact sedan that is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The ATS goes from the early $30,000s to around $43,000. That is a good price for what you get with the ATS. The ATS has a nice balance between ride quality and handling. The ATS has a sporty suspension, yet it was comfortable to be in. I have been in cars that have too soft of a ride that there is a delay between turning the steering wheel and the car turning. I have also been cars that the suspension was too stiff. I drove the ATS with the turbocharged engine, but I did not notice any turbo lag. Well done, General Motors and Cadillac. The ATS has a good styling. If you are looking for a luxury compact sedan or a sports sedan, give the ATS a test drive. I highly recommend the ATS. ■

The ATS offers smooth character lines and a nice sports sedan styling. Scott Weiner Car Junkie

n 2012, Cadillac came out with two new sedans. The first of the two new sedans is the XTS, a full-size sedan that replaced both the STS and DTS. The second new sedan is the ATS, a compact sedan that competes against the Lexus IS, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The ATS is the first Cadillac compact sedan to be sold in North America since the Cimarron was sold from 1982 to 1988. The European market got the BLS from 2005 to 2010. The Cadillac is a front-engine, four-door compact sedan that is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. I first saw the ATS in 2012. I liked what I saw out of the ATS and named it my Best Sports Sedan award before even driving it. The ATS was Esquire’s 2013 Car of the Year, Popular Mechanics’ 2013 Luxury Car of the Year, and Motor Press Guild’s 2013 Vehicle of the year. The ATS is also the 2013 North American Car of the Year. The version of the ATS that I drove came with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and with rear-wheel drive. The ATS styling grew on me. It has some nice character lines and a nice sports sedan styling. It does not look as bland as some of the other compact sedans, luxury sedans, and sports sedans. The ATS has a nice interior. The touch screen is user friendly. The seat was comfortable to sit in. I had a nice amount of leg room and head room. The car has a sporty feel to it. The ATS I drove came with a turbocharged 2.0L I4 engine that produces 272 hp and 260 foot pounds of torque. The ATS is also available with a 2.5-liter I4 engine that produces 202 horsepower and 190 foot pounds. The ATS also comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 321 horsepower and 274 foot pounds of torque. All engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is available with an optional 6-speed manual transmission. The first thing I noticed about the way the ATS 2.0T was the lack of turbo lag. I did not notice any turbo lag, if there was any. The car has smooth acceleration. The ATS 2.0T can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, and it felt quick. The ATS has a comfortable, quiet ride and was fun to drive. The car responds well when I turned the steering wheel.

RECALL Associated Press eneral Motors has issued recalls totaling more than 312,000 vehicles as the company cleans up past safety issues. The recalls in North America pushed GM’s total for the year to 66, covering just over 29 million cars and trucks. That beats the company’s old full-year record and has pushed this total number for the industry this year to more than 40 million, also an annual record.

G

Automotive News GM brings back 312,000 vehicles for safety issues The largest of the recalls covers 215,243 Saturn Vue SUVs from the 2002 through 2004 model years. GM says keys can be removed when ignitions are not in the “off” position. The problem is linked to two crashes and one injury. GM is conducting a companywide safety review following a bungled recall of 2.6 million small cars with faulty ignition switches. GM has admitted knowing about the defective switches for at least a decade, yet it didn’t recall the cars until February.

In the recalls, GM has told dealers to stop selling some of the vehicles until repairs are made. Including the Vue recall, GM has called back 16.5 million vehicles for ignition switch problems. Dealers will inspect the Vue ignitions and replace the cylinder if needed at no cost to customers. The company says it’s important for drivers to make sure the SUVs are in “Park” before they exit the vehicles. Other recalls announced include: • 72,826 Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Trax in Canada and Buick Encore cars and SUVs from the 2013 model year. In some of the vehicles, the front lap belts may

not lock properly, allowing people to move in a crash. Dealers will replace the belt pretensioners. GM doesn’t know of any crashes, but it has told dealers not to sell the vehicles until repairs are done. • 15,386 Chevrolet Impalas from 2014 and 2015. On some LT and LTZ models, the front console storage door may not latch properly in a rear crash. Dealers will replace the latch. The company knows of no crashes or injuries, but it’s ordering dealers to hold the cars until repairs can be made. • 3,624 Cadillac ATS sedans from 2013 and 2014 to fix a problem with front lighting. These cars were all exported from the U.S. ■

Versatility an asset

The EPA labels the Prius v a “midsize wagon.” Toyota thinks the “v” stands for “versatility,” so it will “let the market tell us what it is,” LaRocque said. Toyota believes consumers will, on any given day, see the v as a wagon, crossover or sport-utility vehicle, depending on their needs of the moment. The marketers say the v is a family hauler and commuter car that is favored by couples who are 35 to 45 years old, with kids. Consider the v a “second” or “weekend” family car to go out and do things in. Toyota says v owners have another Prius parked in the garage for everyday use. The reason people are buying their second Prius – the v – is because the v has substantially more room to cart stuff around in than a standard Prius.

Safety features

The Prius v is equipped with a backup camera so drivers don’t run over people or hit things. It also has seven airbags, including one for your knee.

The Prius v Five offers technology that includes a stolen vehicle locator and an SOS button. The car’s platform uses steel, used in strategic ways to increase occupant safety. This bolsters strength without adding weight. Safety features also include vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock braking system and Brake Assist. The v also features a Smart Stop Technology brake-override system and electronic tire pressure-monitoring system, standard.

The Prius family will define our future.

it to maintain outstanding fuel efficiency. The car comes with race-inspired 17-inch forged alloy wheels. The higher strength-to-weight ratio cuts down the upsprung weight, helps to keep corner weight down and performance up, while maintaining the Prius’s overall light vehicle girth and great gas mileage. The wheels have low profile 215/45R17 tires and have a custom offset, which increases track width while maintaining the Prius’s low rolling resistance. Also: The split five-spoke pattern with a liquid metal protective finish keeps the appearance looking great. The PLUS performance side gives drivers excellent traction and handling that will delight enthusiasts while still impressing fuel-efficiency fans. The springs lower the Prius 1.1 inches in the front and 1.3 inches in back. This enhances the Prius’s road performance through quicker turnin, enhanced steering response and improved cornering ability. A tuned rear sway bar reduces body lean for flatter cornering and maneuverability. This empowers the driver by providing amazing control. ■

ION RED LINE Customer service was Job One at Saturn – a good idea that failed

By HAWKE FRACASSA Managing editor

T

he Ion was a great compact car for first-time buyers as the Saturn brand was limping on its last legs. It was one of the last of the almost 4 million vehicles that were assembled by Saturn auto workers at the factory in Spring Hill, Tenn., over the course of 17 years. That same plant has been resuscitated as part of the latest deal between General Motors and the UAW. The contract – which delivered job security to veteran auto workers and $3 hourly raises to entrylevel hires – was the impetus to revive Spring Hill. Before seeing where Spring Hill can go, it is important to recount and acknowledge where it has been, to understand its heritage – with GM and with the now-defunct Saturn marque.

Death of a plant

The end of the line was brutal. As Saturn was shedding production duties in Tennessee so it could assemble its cars in Michigan, Georgia, Delaware, Kansas, Mexico and, later, even Belgium, it was the Ion that was chosen to stay at the assembly plant near Nashville. The plant had become iconic as the home of Saturn’s import-fighting autos in the early 1990s. Before the $12,000 Ion’s demise in 2007, its main mission was to take aim at younger buyers with its edgy styling and strong 2.2-liter engine. It was replaced in 2008 by the Astra, a European mainstay assembled by Opel.

Almost 3,000 workers built Saturns and other GM vehicles before employmen in Spring Hill was slashed by two-thirds. The carmaker has added more than 500 jobs at the plant in the past few years.

The American-made Ion Red Line was the performance-driven choice for Saturn buyers before the brand died. The writing was on the wall for the Ion near the end. Although few could forecast the death of the popular Saturn brand, what was obvious was that the Ion had no future because before things went south financially for General Motors, it had plans to make Saturns more upscale and, in turn, more expensive.

Upselling the brand

While internal plans were afoot at GM to market Saturn to snootier, more label-driven buyers who could afford to pay more, it never got the chance, not really, to go much beyond the original mission of making simple cars that you buy from friendly, no-muss-nofuss-no-hassle dealers. The original formula worked for a long time. Surveys consistently showed that buyers of Saturns made at Spring Hill were more satisfied with their cars and their dealers than buyers of other brands. The last Saturn Ion delivered 35 miles per gallon and had two body styles and three trim levels – Ion 2, Ion 3 and Red Line. Besides the standard small sedan, there was the “quad coupe” body style that showcased two reverseopening access doors. Sedans came standard with 145-horsepower 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engines. The Ion 3 sedan came with an optional 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, which is good for 175 horsepower as part of the Enhanced Performance Package. A 5-speed manual transmission came standard and a 4-speed automatic was available as an option. Smart buyers got the automatic. The Ion Red Line was powered by a supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that pushed out 205 horsepower. The Red Line also came only as a 5 speed. The Ion 2 came with the basics: Power locks, OnStar and a CD player. A Preferred Package added

power windows and mirrors, cruise control, a driverseat height adjuster and keyless entry. The Ion 3 had everything on the Ion 2 and the Preferred Package plus 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and an anti-theft system.

Ion Red Line: Future unrealized

The performance-driven Ion Red Line came only as a quad coupe and featured 17-inch alloy wheels, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, leather sport seats and most of the Ion 3’s equipment. Options included a choice of rear spoilers and the Red Line Competition Package that added a limitedslip front differential, painted alloy wheels, a boost gauge and a programmable “ladder” tachometer that lit up when certain rpm levels were reached. The quad coupe offered dual rear-access doors. Combined with a front-passenger fold-flat seat, the rear-access doors, which opened rearward almost 90 degrees, maximized the interior space by making it easy to load and unload passengers and cargo. Through this design, large objects that would not typically fit in a compact car slide in with ease. The rear doors had no exterior handles to compromise the coupe’s sporty styling. Saturn executives told reporters at a short-lead preview in 2007 that it was possible to put a 9-foot kayak into the coupe through its doors. Nickel-silver roof rails were available for the coupe and sedan, and charcoal rails were available for the sedan only. These choices Saturn offered its customers made it a modern-day Burger King: Both companies want to let customers “have it your way.” Such thinking is what made Saturn a rousing success, until GM broke up the Yankees. ■ (Hawke Fracassa can be reached at hawke@ codyenterprise.com.)

hen Alex Mitchell was in high school he got his first Studebaker vehicle. He’s been a fan ever since and has had six different Studebaker vehicles throughout his life. “I’ve always had Studebakers,” he said. “I like them because not everyone has one of those.” Studebaker was a wagon and automobile manufacturer based in South Bend, Ind. Founded in 1852 under the name of the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Co., the company was originally a producer of wagons for farmers, miners and the military. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name “Studebaker Automobile Co.” In the early 1960s, sliding sales caused production to be moved from South Bend to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and in 1966 production ended. “Spare parts are easy to come by because they’re the most collected out of production vehicles,” he said. Currently, Mitchell owns a 1964 Gran Turismo Hawk, which he purchased five years ago, and a 1963 Champ pickup truck, purchased last year. “The Hawk is like the one I drove to college in so I bought it for nostalgic

As a member of the Yellowstone Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club, he drove one of the Avantis with the group during a Fourth of July parade about 10 years ago. “It’s an advanced-looking car,” Mitchell said. “I sold them to another Studebaker enthusiast so I could get a couple different Studebakers.” During the warmer months, Mitchell can be seen cruising around town in his vehicles. “These are driving cars, not show cars,” he said. “I like old things and these have no gadgets. It’s all basic and about transportation.” He said he’ll keep the cars for three or so more years and then likely sell them so he can get different Studebakers. ■
