To forgive is divine, to accept forgiveness is even more so No one ever sets out to have an accident, they just happen. And we’ve all had them. We’ve all had that time when we broke the beloved candy dish, or spilled coffee on the white carpet, or wrecked Mom’s car, or broke our collarbone while biking. No one sets out to intentionally do these things, they just happen. I am certain each and every one of us has been involved in a situation momentarily outside of our control at one time or another where we were left scratching our heads asking, “What just happened?” I was recently involved in such an event. Fortunately, no one got hurt. Unfortunately, a valuable object did. It’s remarkable how much damage can be inflicted in the blink of
an eye. It is so easy to beat yourself up over an accident – because even though you know it was completely out of your control in that instant, only seconds before you see clearly how it could have been totally avoided. That’s what makes those situations so difficult: the knowledge that they never should have taken place. Accidents become a thing of the past before you even realize what occurred and hindsight is still 20/20. So while you sit banging your head against invisible hands of time that can’t be turned back, someone reminds you that they too experienced a similar “accident” and were forgiven the ramifications. The people to whom the

valuable object belonged immediately forgave me – without even thinking twice. I, on the other hand, am slower to come to the same resolution. I did do damage – not irreparable, but damage nonetheless. And while they tell me to take this experience and basically pay it forward another time to some other poor bloke who inflicts a not-the-end-ofthe-world infraction to me – a time we are all certain will one day present itself – I struggle with the sense of responsibility I feel to clean up my mess. That’s how I was raised – one cleans up after herself and rights the wrongs that she has wrought. So, it is interesting for me
to pontificate this new freedom that’s been gifted to me. It is an uncomfortable yet obviously loving and generous gift in light of a bad moment with damaging results – though none beyond repair. A surprise within a surprise. An accident not soon to be forgotten and yet one which will be repaid in the future to another unsuspecting soul who will smile with gratitude in the throes of their own personal struggles between accepting responsibility and accepting the gift of forgiveness. A person who I hope feels the same sense of gratitude in their moment as I feel today in mine. I look forward to the day I too get to pay it forward.

Labor Day Arts Fair in Red Lodge More than 85 artists display their work at Lions Park
Don’t miss the 35th Annual Labor Day Arts Fair on Monday, Sept. 1, at Lions Park in Red Lodge. The Carbon County Arts Guild event offers a full day of original art, handmade crafts, music and food for everyone to enjoy. From 9 a.m.-4 p.m., more than 85 artists will converge on Lions Park adjacent to the historic depot to offer a creative assortment of art and handmade crafts directly to the public. On display will be items such as fine art, sculpture, glass, photography, jewelry, pottery, wood carving, metal art and pottery, clothing, furniture, home accessories, greeting cards, and many other arts
and fine crafts. Plan to meet all the artists and get to know more about their work. Shop for a special occasion or indulge in something for yourself. In addition to arts and crafts, there will be entertainment at the gazebo throughout the day. And of course, the fair won’t be complete without food. Miller’s love of performing on display in music revue By RACHEL WALTON Staff writer The lights go down and the audience quiets. They’re anxiously waiting for something, anything, to pierce the silence. That’s when it starts to fill the air. The first note turns into two, then three, soon a song is forming. This is why they came; this is one of the reasons people come to the Wild West – cowboy music. “I love performing,” 16-year-old Hannah Miller said. “I love making people smile and seeing them move to the music.” Hannah has been performing in “Dan Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue” with her father Dan Miller since she was 6. “It’s incredible performing with my dad,” Hannah said. “I know when he’s hard on me it is to help me and I appreciate it a lot.” Dan enjoys performing with his daughter. “I’m extremely blessed to be able to spend that time with her six nights a week, more than 120 nights a year, in front of an audience,” Dan said. Having to work together doesn’t affect the two. “I am first and foremost always her father,” Dan said. “When we’re performing, I don’t look at her as a fellow performer. I’m her dad and my interaction with her is always the same whether we’re at home, riding horses or playing music together.” The list of people who have helped Hannah doesn’t stop with her mom and dad. “We’re all such a big family where we’re at,” she said. “I have such an incredible opportunity that a lot of people don’t get.” Performing has helped Hannah step out of her comfort zone. “I was super shy when I was little and now, through this whole experience, it has helped me come out of my shell in a way,” she said. “I love talking to people and making them laugh.” Dan says music helps accentuate Hannah’s best trait. “I think Hannah’s biggest strength is her personality,” he said. “Her music accents it.” For Hannah, the hard parts of performing and being involved in

She’s done over a thousand performances with me and never missed one,” Dan said. “If she’s going to miss, this is the thing to miss it for.” Hannah is fundraising for this $6,000 trip and is looking forward to visiting the seven different countries. “I’m excited to see the culture,” she said. “I want to see how people act and what they do. I want to see what’s different.” Cody high school choir teacher Larry Munari is going on the trip as well. He says Hannah has what it takes to be part of this group. “She is certainly qualified for the trip,” he said. “I am thrilled she’s going. She’s the kind of person interested in being a well rounded musician and this will xpose her more to classical music.” Dan wants his daughter to have the opportunity to expand her boundaries. “She’s grown a lot as a musician and as a young lady during the last 10 years,” he said. “I hope people take the opportunity to come see her. I’m proud of her.”

Steakhouse offers tasty cowboy cuisine For “Kick Ass Cowboy Cuisine” check out the Proud Cut Saloon & Steakhouse. The restaurant is known for its juicy steaks. Try the ribeye, New York strip, flat iron T-Bone, porterhouse tenderloin, baseball cut sirloin or famous prime rib. “Our quality of meat is what makes them so good,” coowner Becky Nose said. “We only buy the highest quality.” The Proud Cut serves a fine selection of burgers and sandwiches as well. The Bacon Burger is a classic choice, but you can also check out the Ole’ Picante Burger dripping with a touch of old Mexican flavor, or try the Jalapeno Burger with mounds of fiery jalapenos and melted cheddar cheese.
The prime is a great sandwich option and features a luncheon size portion of their slow roasted prime rib served open faced. There’s also the roast beef served with Au Jus, or the steak sandwich, chicken tender club and patty melt. You can also try the hardwood smoked ribs that fall off the bone, jumbo shrimp, halibut, salmon walleye or shrimp pastas. “We have some great pasta dishes and daily dinner specials,” Nose said. If you’re looking for “greener pastures” try a spinach, shrimp, grilled or cobb salad. There’s also the wedge salad, featuring a wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with crumbled bacon pieces, and bleu cheese dressing.
Soups are made fresh daily and feature a soup of the day and French Onion Au Gratin. To get the evening started, go with one of the Proud Cut’s many tasty appetizers including queso bits, Angus sliders, jalepeno poppers and Rocky Mountain Oysters. And be sure to end the evening with one of their many homemade dessert selections. You can also order a drink from the full service bar. “We have the oldest liquor license in Park County,” Nose said. “The bar got it in 1924 when prohibition ended. The building is on the historical register.” While you’re waiting for your food, check out the decor. Lining the walls of the restaurant are several rodeo
photos along with a few original Belden prints. “All the photos are rodeo friends or family,” Nose said. “We know everyone hanging up there.” Becky and her husband Del Nose are committed to upholding real Western traditions at their restaurant after nearly 30 years in business. “Cody was more Western oriented when we came here and we’ve tried to keep the grassroots cowboy way alive here,” she said. “We serve quality food and work hard to provide great customer service.” The Proud Cut is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon-9 p.m. on Sunday.
