FORMER BRONCS LOOK BACK
C- 2 - Cody Enterprise -Thursday, October 2, 2014
By AMBER PEABODY Special sections editor Cody High School currently has three alumni playing football in college.
Andrew Blaylock Black Hills State The junior is an offensive l i n e m a n f o r t h e Ye l l o w Jackets. He graduated from CHS in 2011. Most memorable moment as a Bronc football player? It would have to be never losing to Powell in any of the games I played in. What did you enjoy about CHS homecoming games? I enjoyed all of the festivities that were going on in and around the school during homecoming week. It made the week fun and let the players know everyone was supporting them. Biggest change from high school to college football? The amount of time spent watching film and having meetings has got to be up there, but the biggest thing is simply the speed of the game. Most memorable moment as a Yellow Jacket? It probably would have to be my first college start (vs. Idaho State) as of right now; just the entire atmosphere and the nerves. H o w a re h o m e c o m i n g games different in college? The college is not nearly
as involved in the activities around the school.
Any advice for current Bronc football players? Cherish it because it doesn’t last forever. The time will start to slip away and before you know it you are done with football. David Lee Black Hills State The redshirt freshman is a defensive lineman. He graduated from CHS in 2014. Most memorable moment as a Bronc football player? After every win I remember doing the Cody Jacks on the field with my team, and just the feeling of joy and happiness of being with my friends. What did you enjoy about CHS homecoming games? I enjoyed the intensity and the realization of how big a part we had in our homecoming. Biggest change from high school to college football? The intensity level and the mindset. It goes from just playing to competing at a way higher level. Most memorable moment as a Yellow Jacket? It has got to be the late nights with my teammates, staying up and talking, and playing ping-pong in the dorms. H o w a re h o m e c o m i n g

games different in college? The games are just as intense, but the homecoming events and royalty are scaled back and it’s just all about the game. Any advice for current Bronc football players? Just keep playing your heart out, keep working hard and be true to who you are. Don’t let anything get you down, you are a Bronc. Jeremy Tuten Black Hills State The senior linebacker graduated from CHS in 2010. He had 96 tackles during his

junior season for the Yellow Jackets. Most memorable moment as a Bronc football player? My most memorable moments were the conference championship games my junior and senior years. They both were really close games and having them on senior night made the wins so much better. What did you enjoy about CHS homecoming games? Right behind the playoffs and senior night, homecoming was probably the next game which had the most meaning.
Jeremy Tuten
It’s a game where you really feel the entire school and town is behind you, so winning is that much more important. Biggest change from high school to college football? The overall speed of the game. Everyone is bigger and faster and the mistakes made are farther between. You have to be ready to capitalize on anything the other team will give you. Most memorable moment as a Yellow Jacket? Our rivalry games have been memorable. The overall atmosphere of the game

changes and you see most everyone on both sides play at a different level. H o w a re h o m e c o m i n g games different in college? The football team isn’t as focused on everything that is going on outside the game. We try to view it just as another game and focus on prepping as best we can throughout the week. Any advice for current Bronc football players? It goes by so fast so don’t let any of it get away from you. It will probably be one of the best times of your lives.
Gunn finishes stellar golf career By AMBER PEABODY Special sections editor As the 3A State Golf Tournament wound down Saturday, so too did the career of one Cody’s most successful Filly golfers. Sydney Gunn ended her senior season with a team and individual state title. It was her second team championship and third individual title. “It’s hard to put Sydney’s high school career into a couple of sentences because she’s done so much,” coach Chad Smith said. “She has meant a great deal to this team, not only because of her playing talent, but because of her leadership.” Gunn has been hitting the links with her parents for as long as she can remember, but it wasn’t until eighth-grade that she began to get serious about the sport. “During the high school’s spring season I practiced with them,” she said. While she was enjoying golf, heading into her freshman year she was planning to play volleyball. “My dad talked me out of it,” she said. She decided to join the golf team instead and in her first tournament of the season finished second. She earned two other top three finishes leading into state, where she surprised the field to win the individual title. “At the time I didn’t realize the importance of making top 10 and I had no idea I’d possibly win,” she said. “It wasn’t until the last couple of holes (at state) that I thought I might win.” After winning though, she felt more pressure to repeat her sophomore year. “I felt like I had to win,” she said. She finished second in each of the tournaments leading up to state and was runner-up at state. She was able to celebrate a team title, though, as she and teammates Rylee Marron and Kelsey Cross finished 25 strokes ahead of Powell to win. “All the focus was on making each other better throughout the season,” Gunn said. “We wanted to play well not just for our individual score, but also to help the team.” The loss was a learning lesson and motivator for Gunn, who prepared to regain the title as a junior. “My mental game changed the most,” she said. “During that round my sophomore year I kept

thinking ‘What if you lose?’ My junior and senior year I thought about what I wanted to shoot.” Her goal going into her junior season was to shoot in the 70s or low 80s each round. She won her first tournament, then her second and third. In fact, heading into the state tournament she a perfect 5-5. State was shortened due to weather, but her score still gave her the victory by eight shots. “I wasn’t trying to win every tournament,” she said. “I was just going out and having fun. Winning state again was the icing on the cake.” Her dominance continued this season. She won the first three tournaments of the season and also took the conference title. “I tried not to think about being undefeated,” she said. “I had a goal in mind of shooting about 75 and if it was good enough to win, it was good enough to win.” With state held on her home course, she tried not to fret about finishing with a another title. “It was a little nerve wracking,” she said. “On the second day I did a terrible job on the first three holes, but then my coach talked to me and I stopped thinking about it.” She used the home course advantage to go out on top. “Playing on this course that I’ve played so many times helped me calm down,” she said. “It was fun and I tried to

I was relieved it was over, but at the same time sad because I enjoy it so much.” With her high school career now over, Gunn will focus on choosing a college. “There are many wonderful things in Sydney’s future,” Smith adds. “She’s an excellent athlete with a great chance to play golf at the next level but, more importantly, she is a tremendous student. “Sydney has definitely left her mark at Cody High School and I can’t wait to see what she does next.”
