Who needs an alarm clock when there’s squawking birds I can always tell when spring has sprung. Dawn is filled with the sweet chirping sounds of all the birds that have returned to inhabit the trees surrounding my home. At first the symbolism outweighs the disturbance. Warmer weather has arrived and summer is just around the corner. The novelty of their return is sweet and welcomed. The birds are back, they are happy and chirping, singing, communicating, having babies and doing all that stuff animals do as winter thaws and the summer season draws nearer.
As soon as my windows open though, the earplugs go in. It sounds like a full-on aviary at the zoo in my backyard. They wake with the sun ... and as a result, I do too. I’m not a big fan of early morning noise – human or wild – but apparently I’m a minority. I recently had several conversations with friends and co-workers about this very subject complaining about the annual arrival of my seasonal neighbors – yearning for the quiet winter mornings of yesterday.

“Oh, but don’t you like the sound of the meadowlark?” one of my friends asked. Yes, yes I do, but at 4:30 in the morning – at the buttcrack of dawn – I don’t like any noise. I prefer silence, no matter how pretty the song. (Besides, I’m not hearing meadowlarks here at my house anyway.) And, now, I’ve got these big black nutty ravens out here squawking all evening long like they are delivering the Gettysburg Address or some-such important oration. I am surrounded by the beautiful sounds of nature early in the morning and late into the evening. I’d be OK with them shutting up and sleeping in a little more.
I like the occasional doves that softly coo through the air and into my ginormous pine tree. Sometimes you can even hear an owl hooting from above if the ravens are quiet. When I’m up and running and the eyelids are wide open, I generally enjoy all the sounds of nature – no matter what time of day. I guess I can be happy the turkey vultures didn’t decide to roost in my tree year after year. I don’t know what kind of noise they make but I have witnessed the stinky mess they leave behind and I gotta say I’m glad it’s not here in my yard. That’s me – lookin’ at the bright side. But, rest assured, that’s generally happening closer to 7 a.m. than 5 a.m.

C O O K-OF F Annual event June 28 By ANTHONY PROSCENO Staff writer
Things will get spicy during the sixth annual Cody Wild West Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, June 28. The Cody Elks Lodge event will help support the Army of Hope. The Army of Hope program provides financial assistance to families with military reservists when they are sent on active duty. “It’s not necessarily medical, but to help meet their financial needs temporarily,” chili cook-off chairman Wes Huber said. Chili chefs can compete in four categories: traditional red chili, chili verde, salsa and open class chili.
In the past, the event on the Elks Lodge lawn has drawn about 20 cooks, Huber said. Sign in for contestants starts at 6:45 a.m. The event begins at 9 a.m. and admission for chili-lovers is $3. “You get a whole lot of chili to taste, and it will fill you up,” Huber said. “I’ve never made it all the way around.”

Skateboarding contest June 21 at Mentock By ANTHONY PROSCENO Staff writer
Local skateboarders are invited to participate in the first annual Cody Skateboarding Stampede. The event is a fundraiser for Skateistan on Go Skateboarding Day, June 21. GSD is an annual holiday by the International Association of Skateboard Companies to promote skateboarding. Cody Skateboarding Stampede event coordinator John E. Wells said he is trying to change the way people in Cody perceive skateboarding. “The big thing through this event is allowing people to see that skateboarding is a positive thing that can offer the community something that it is missing or lacking,” Wells said. He said skateboarding is a way for giving people freedom to express themselves creatively. The skateboarding contest at Mentock Park begins at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the “stampede of skateboarders” on Sheridan Avenue at 3 p.m. Wells said the event is “trying to get exposure for something that is unseen” in the community, which is skateboarding. The art silent auction for Skateistan starts at 5 p.m. “We’re looking for anyone willing to donate art for a good cause,” Wells said. Skateistan is a non-profit organization that uses skateboarding to draw children into education in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Cambodia. For more information about the event call 250-8256.

A
tradition in Cody and among the many Plains tribes that attend and compete, the Plains Indian Museum Powwow – the longest running public program at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West – celebrates its 33rd anniversary this year. For many spectators, attending the powwow is a new and exciting experience full of color, movement and celebration. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday June 21-22 at the Robbie Powwow Garden on the grounds of the Center of the West. Grand Entries are at noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday.
Dancers range in age from Tiny Tots (children 6 and younger) to Golden Age (55 and older). Competitive dance categories include traditional, grass, and fancy for men and boys; and traditional, fancy shawl, and jingle for women and girls. Arts vendor booths surround the dance arena at powwow and feature authentic Native-made arts, jewelry, photography, beadwork and more. Tickets for the Plains Indian Museum Powwow are available at the gate on the southeast corner of the Center’s grounds the days of the event (good for one day only), or in advance at the Center’s
admissions desk. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults 18 and older; $5 for youths 7 to 17; free for children 6 and younger. Center of the West members receive a $1 discount with a valid membership card. Ticket prices are separate from Center of the West general admission. The Powwow Garden is an outdoor grass amphitheater with limited bleacher seating; visitors may bring lawn chairs or blankets. In addition to the arts vendors, the powwow also features fry bread and Indian taco vendors, kettle corn, and other food and beverage concessions.

‘Music Man’ hits stage June 26 By BUZZY HASSRICK Special to the Pulse
The Music Man involves impressive numbers: a live orchestra with 26 pieces; 165 costumes; and a cast of 98, with the youngest 8 and the oldest 84. “That’s a huge age range,” music director Donna-Lynn Murray said. “I’ve fallen in love with this cast,” added director Lynne Simpson, who said they listen, are patient, disciplined and interested, and love the theater. “There’s love everywhere,” she mentioned with a smile. “It’s sickening.” Curtain time for the musical production by Cody Community Theater will be 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, June 26-28, at Wynona Thompson Auditorium. Tickets are on sale at the Cody chamber and Wells Fargo downtown and online at parkcountyartscouncil.org. Ticket prices are $15, $20 and $25 in advance, $2.50 more at the door. The entertainment will continue during intermission with barbershop songs from the Yellowstone Harmony Chorus, along with free ice cream and root beer, courtesy Wells Fargo.
The show’s dates jibe with the theme, preparations for July 4th celebrations in the small, sleepy town of River City, Iowa, in 1914. A con man’s plot to swindle the city takes a twist when he falls for the local librarian, who’s less gullible than the town’s leaders. In lead roles are Larry Munari as the music man, Alice Munari as the librarian, Owen Fink as her little brother, and Mack Frost and Liz Danforth as the mayor and his wife. Their voices are joined by a quartet, women’s and men’s groups, and an adult and a youth chorus. They’re supported by a crew of 20. “It’s a monster show. It’s huge,” Simpson said. “There are a lot of set changes, and it’s a period piece. It’s really old.” “But it’s not like the movie,” added Murray, noting that the music was updated to sound more modern. The bonus of live musicians was the inspiration of Wade French, Cody High School band teacher, who recruited regional players. “He’s awesome,” Simpson said. “He shows up at all the rehearsals and knows the music as well as I do.”
The director extended her praise to Larry Munari who acts, taps and sings. “He’s more than a triple threat,” Murray added. Five children auditioned for the librarian’s little brother. “They were all darling,” Simpson recalled. “We had to pick one. We picked a singing dozy.” The talent extends to the entire cast, the directors agreed. “And we need everybody to make a great show,” Murray added. Their commitment is impressive too, as rehearsals began in January, unlike the usual 6-week preparation for most community theater. “It’s a blast,” said Murray, who’s rejuvenated by the effort. Outside her husband, Simpson noted, “I’m the happiest in the theater. It’s the only place I’m in the present.” With so many demands on the director, “you must be totally in the present. “I think it’s restful. It’s where I can operate and be so free.” Simpson described the production as a gift from the cast of community members to the audience of other community members. “Their applause is a thank you,” she said.
