Red Lodge Mountain season starts Nov. 28 Red Lodge Mountain opened for the season Friday and about 1,000 visitors were expected for opening weekend. Because skiing will be limited to the lower mountain, all-day lift tickets will be sold at the half-day rate until more terrain opens. An early November storm left the mountain covered in snow, and the snow-making crew has since been working to supplement the natural snowfall. About 12 million gallons of water already has been used to make snow. That’s only about half of the water that eventually will be used to cover the mountain. “The first thing is to make sure we have some snow. So our snow-making crew has been trying hard to make snow,” RLM general manager Jeff Schmidt said. “They typically make snow during the night. During the day
our snow groomers are out in their machines, smoothing the snow made in the night. “That’s probably the most important thing. Everything is important – but if you don’t have snow, you can’t have any of the other things.” Lifts start turning at 9 a.m. The resort will operate the Triple Chair, Miami Beach Chair, the Magic Carpet and the Willow Creek Chair. Access will be available to Turnpike, Auto Bahn, Show Off Alley, Miami Beach, Ladies Aid and the learning area. In addition, a few terrain park features will be open on the lower portion of Hancock. Food service for the holiday weekend will be available in the Main Lodge, at Midway Chalet and at the Bierstube which also will feature live music from Dan Dubuque on Friday and Sean Devine on Saturday.

Vintage Roman Theater filled with rich history, fun memories By SCOTT ALLEN Staff writer Nearing 100 years of entertainment, the Roman Theater in Red Lodge still thrives on the community energy that existed during the height of the coal mining era when it was established. The Roman was started in 1917 by an Italian immigrant, Stephen Roman, who at the time also owned the Park Theater in Red Lodge. He and his family owned and operated Red Lodge Theater into the 1980s. Lee Hanchett, who operated the theater for 25 years, says it’s a great community venue where people can gather for a good time. “It’s the community’s theater,” Hanchett says. “It’s not just a box in a mall. It’s a safe place where people from all over can come and enjoy themselves.” The theater, near Broadway and 13th, is one of 400 single-screen individual theaters in the U.S. It has a capacity of 220 people. Its old wooden panels, vintage ceiling tiles and creaky wooden seats allude to its rich history. Guynema Terry, a member of the Red Lodge Theater Co. and a retired drama teacher, says she enjoys the theater’s historic feeling. “I just like the feeling of this place,” she adds. “It’s peaceful. After everyone leaves and I’m here alone, I feel so safe.” The theater shows a daily movie at 7:15 p.m. and hosts 3-4 theatrical performances each year. Movies shown depend on the season and availability, but most are family flicks. An elegant atmosphere permeates the theater. “It’s like going to church,” Hanchett said. “You’re going to share similar sentiments, interests and experiences with those around you.” Although the theater is vintage, it maintains modern equipment. They made the switch from film to digital in April 2012 “Going digital was crucial for the theater,” Hanchett adds. “We needed to do that to keep showing films.” The theater has been owned by Jeff Anderson and Betsy Scanlin since 2000 and they’ve been responsible for keeping it operating.
“Jeff and Betsy sunk a ton of money into replacing the roof, fixing seats and just doing things to keep it open,” Hanchett said. “They’re responsible for the theater’s survival.” Another group responsible for the theater’s success is the Red Lodge Theater Co. which took over management in 2012 when Hanchett retired. It’s is a nonprofit group that raises and spends money on theatrical productions at the theater. That local energy has helped the theater grow in the past two years. “The best chance for the theater’s success would be for those people to take over because of their creative energy,” Hanchett adds. Red Lodge Theater Co. is like the Carol Burnett Show in that it mostly does comedies, although members like to try new things. Their most recent performance, “Murder-Mystery Weekend of Doom: A Love Story,” is a zany farce written by Steven Stack. The murder mystery gives guests the chance to solve a “murder” that includes various murder weapons such as a pomegranate, spatula and garden spike. The comic-dramatic work uses buffoonery and horseplay to display ridiculously improbable situations. As a recent night got colder, the house slowly filled up, reaching about 100 people at show time. The group used their boisterous voices to echo around the spacious theater. Audience members chuckled as the play unfolded. “I think they did a great job,” retired Billings third grade math teacher Wendy Pharris said. “It was my first time here and I really enjoyed the show.” Grayson Matthews, who played Chris Benton in the play, says they like to include current and local events. “It’s great to have a local place to perform because it draws in local energy and we typically throw in jokes specifically relating to things about Red Lodge,” Matthews adds. “When we get positive feedback from the audience we turn it up and feed off their energy.” The Roman Theater has seen various celebrities and notorious

The Roman Theater neon sign lights the building’s stone facade. figures through the years. “Ernest Hemingway used to come to this theater when he’d be on fishing trips in the area,” Hanchett said. “And I’ve personally met (coach) Phil Jackson and (actor) Peter Fonda at the theater.” The Roman Theater is a prime representation of what vintage theaters should look like. The town
of Red Lodge and its warm citizens help convey the theater’s positive appearance and its landmark facade leaves a lasting impression on all. “You don’t walk away from the theater, it lives with you forever,” Hanchett adds. “Because of the community’s energy, it’s still ticking 100 years later.”

Get in the Christmas spirit Saturday, Dec. 6, with several events in Cody. The day begins with Breakfast with Santa 8-11 a.m. at QT’s Restaurant. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s annual Holiday Open House will be 10 a.m.5 p.m. The family-friendly event offers something for everyone including music by choruses, carolers, honor choirs, jazz bands and barbershop quartets, and dance in styles from ballet to modern, clogging to tap. Santa will be on hand to hear children’s Christmas wishes and the Cody Reading Council will be near Santa to read favorite Christmas and holiday stories. The Holiday Open House is free, but families attending are encouraged to bring a can of food or a new, unwrapped toy, which the Center will then donate to charitable organizations for distribution in the community. Beginning at 4 p.m., enjoy the Cody Christmas Stroll on Sheridan Avenue. The afternoon features carolers and music, ice carvings, a community bonfire, burn barrels, marshmallow roasting, wagon rides, dance performances and shopping cart races. The 22nd annual Parade of Lights will be at 6 p.m. The theme this year is “Magical Cody Christmas.” Following the parade, children can stop by Santa’s House in City Park, 6-8 p.m.

When was the last time you heard someone talk about the advantages of getting older? People spend a great deal of time bemoaning the effects of aging, but rarely do we hear about the positive aspects of the process. Let’s begin with the fact that as we age, our senses dull. I heard this 40-something guy say he suspected this was the key to long-lasting marriages. He explained that he’d recently gotten his first pair of prescription glasses and upon return home to his wife, for the first time ever, he saw an unsightly chin hair growing out of her face. He quickly ascertained that perhaps it was bet-

Don’t fret about aging, be thankful for today ter to not be able to see everything quite so clearly. Some things weren’t meant to be seen. Or the married couple that’s managed to stay together 50 years. Maybe that’s partially attributable to their inability to see or hear everything as well as they used to and it’s cleverly cloaked as a blessing in disguise. When you can block out the nagging voice of the last five decades, innocently through the natural process of hearing loss, you realize it’s not quite as bad to lose your hearing as you’d feared. Imagine the old couple walking down the street – a sweet little couple sure to garner an ooo and awe from all who witness their handholding and sweet togetherness. But do we really think it’s all romance at its finest or perhaps rather the fact that they’re using each other as a conjoined, make-shift human-
walker for bad hips, bum knees and sore backs. Support is mandatory. Medicare makes it so difficult to get that kind of equipment anymore anyway – you might as well snuggle up with your mate and your conglomeration of ailing parts and hobble down the street together. Strength in numbers, right? And, besides, it looks good. And you’ve been to that “old” person’s home where you find yourself looking around with your youthful 20/20 vision wondering how people can live in such a clutter – or cringing at the dirty glass they pull from the cupboard. They can’t see it so it doesn’t exist. There’s a gift in that blind bliss. Best bet also is their spouse isn’t worried about a little grime on the glass either. There are bigger fish to fry these days. Why waste time worrying about the little things? I’ve been told that time only
goes faster and faster the older we get. I’d hoped that perhaps once we got through the kid journey that some sort of normal pace would resume. But, alas, I gather that’s not the case. But I’m OK with that. Life is this incredible journey riddled with youthful indiscretion, wild, poor choices, great life-altering mature decisions, adventure, love, heartache and heartbreak, laughter and tears. And ultimately – hopefully after many years of living – death. Sounds so harsh when you say it out loud, but that’s the reality. Time is short and none of us know how short it is until the card gets pulled. And even then, if we’re lucky, we still won’t. So, quit fretting about the messy house. One day you’re gonna wake up old and it’ll matter less. Live, love and be thankful. Today.
