Voorwoord Schetsen is een bundel met korte orkestwerken en bevat de volgende stukken: 1. [Inleiding], 2. De vis en de vogel & 3. Adagio. Schetsen is geschreven als verkenning van het orkestrepertoire, waarbij elk stuk een bepaalde manier van schrijven voor orkest onderzoekt: eenstemmigheid (unisono) [1], bewegelijkheid en virtuositeit [2], lange lijnen en stuwende harmonie [3]. Van de drie stukken in deze publicatie, is De vis en de vogel het enige stuk met een programmatische achtergrond. De vis en de vogel is geïnspireerd op het verhaal waarmee de Zhuangzi – een van de boeken van het Taoïsme – opent. Dit verhaal gaat over een reusachtige vis die veranderd in een vogel. Het behandeld enkele kerngedachten van het Taoïsme: het relatieve van de dingen en dat alles deelheeft in een altijd voortdurende transformatie.

(English)

Schetsen (Sketches) is a collection of short orchestra works and consist of the following pieces: 1. [Introduction], 2. The fish and the bird & 3. Adagio. Schetsen was composed as an exploration of the orchestra repertoire, with each piece investigating a particular way of writing for orchestra: orchestral unison [1], movement and virtuosity [2], long lines and driving harmony [3]. Of the three pieces, The fish and the bird is the only piece with a narrative background. It was inspired by the opening story of the Zhuangzi – one of the books of Taoism – in which a giant fish turns into a bird. The story addresses certain basic concepts in Taoism: the relativity of things and that everything is part of a continuous transformation.

SCHETSEN

Biografische Notities Componist Coen Schenk (1981) begon op negen egen jarige leeftijd met het spelen van een instrument en op dertien jarige leeftijd met componeren. Na eerst een opleiding gevolgd te hebben tot binnenhuisadviseur, studeerde hij achtereenvolgens com-positie com positie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag (Bachelor) en de Academy of Music and d Drama in Gotenburg, Zweden (Master). Na terugkeer uit Zweden in 2011 is Schenk begonnen met het uitgeven van muziek in eigen beheer. Schenkss werk omvat composities voor orkest, ensemble, kamermuziek en piano solo. Zijn stukken tukken zijn uitgevoerd op festivals en concerten in verscheidene Europese landen, als mede in China en de Verenigde Staten.

Dutch composer Coen Schenk (1981) started playing an instrument at the age of nine, and began composing at the age of thirteen. After first completing an education in interior design, he turned to composition and studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague (Bachelor) and the Academy Aca of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Sweden (Master). After moving back to the Netherlands in 2011, Schenk started to publish his music independently. To date, Schenk's work includes compositions for orchestra, large ensemble, chamber music music and piano solo. His pieces have been performed at festivals and concerts throughout Europe, China and the United States.
