Background Indonesia is the world's third largest coffee producer, with production of 9.6 million bags in 2009. Of the total production, approximately 90,000 tons is Arabica coffee coming from the six islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Flores, Sulawesi and Papua. The goal of the Indonesian Specialty Coffee Auction (ISCA) is to identify 20 to 30 small lots of the best coffee out of the total Arabica production, and make these coffees available to domestic and international buyers in one location, for the first time. Organizing this auction will help the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) to achieve its goals of increasing the quality and quantity of Arabica coffee from Indonesia in four ways: •
Introduce international and domestic buyers to a wide range of the best Indonesian coffees
•
Demonstrate to farmers and exporters that premium prices can be achieved through quality and traceability
•
Calibrate Indonesian Q-Graders to international standards
•
Generate favorable publicity for Indonesian specialty coffee, both internationally and within Indonesia.
ISCA Date and venue •
October 9th and 10th 2010, immediately following the ASIC (International Scientific Association for Coffee) meeting.
•
The venue for the cupping and auction will be the training facility at Bali Kopi House, owned by SCAI member PT. Putra Bhinneka Perkasa.
•
Bali Kopi House is on By-Pass Highway in Sanur, a short taxi ride from the ASIC meeting site.
ISCA Participants ISCA participants are SCAI’s members from the category • Farmers & Group of Farmers • Cooperatives • Exporters For non-SCAI members, SCAI will charge a registration fee.
Selection Process 1. Starting in August, any exporter or farmers’ cooperative may submit coffee samples for vetting. 2. The samples must weigh at least one kilogram and be submitted to the SCAI Secretariat in Jakarta. The samples will then be sent out for blind cupping by Q-Graders, at SCAI expense. 3. Coffees scoring 82 or above are eligible for the auction. 4. If more than 30 samples are received, the 30 highest scoring samples will be invited to participate. Owners of the coffees will be notified within two weeks of their scores. 5. Each lot in the auction will be between 10 and 15 bags (600 to 900 kilograms). 6. Up to five smaller lots of Kopi Luwak may also be presented. Each of these lots will weigh between 20 and 60 kilograms. 7. Each lot will be accompanied by complete data on its origin and processing 8. By October 1, all lots of coffee in the auction must be sent to the PT Putra Bhinneka Perkasa warehouse in Bali, at the owner’s expense. 9. All the samples Q-score will be posted in CQI website.
Joint cupping session prior to the auction 1. On October 7th, a representative sample will be drawn from each lot by the Judging Committee. All participants in the auction are welcome to witness the sampling. 2. On October 8th, these samples will be roasted to SCAA specifications. All participants are welcome to witness, or assist with, the roasting. 3. On October 9th all the samples will be cupped and scored by a joint Indonesian Q-Graders and international team of judges, using the CQI form. The results of this cupping will be presented to the bidders to educate the producers and inform the bidding. 4. Buyers may do additional sampling and cupping in the afternoon of October 9th or the morning of October 10th.
