Glen Mill Golf Course W
icklow is famous for its beautiful scenic background of soft rolling hills, purple glens and silvery streams. Glen Mill is located with a similar backdrop of natural beauty right at its doorstep. Here at Glen Mill water is regarded very much as a feature in this excellent par-three course at 2758 yards situated just a short journey off the N11 at Newcastle if you are coming from the Dublin direction. Approaching the course on the northbound dual carriageway take the exit for Newtownmountkennedy and again you are only minutes away from experiencing sheer golfing pleasure. In short, it is a course that is very accessible to enthusiasts of this Royal and Ancient game whether they are from Wicklow itself or the surrounding counties.
Glen Mill has a rich history associated with it. During the construction of the 15th green a horizontal wheeled watermill was discovered in the Glen. The mill dates back to 750 AD. It is from this historic site that the Glen Mill Golf Club draws both its name and logo.

Curtains & blinds
When it comes to curtains & blinds we thought who better to advise both us and you on the subject than Richard Kelly from Richard Kelly Curtains, 32 Main St. Bray. Richard has been in the business of fitting people with curtains and blinds for their homes and businesses for nearly thirty years and he was kind enough to share some of his expertise with us. Fitting: When it comes to the fitting of both curtains and blinds it is important to consider potential lead-in times. Richard tells us that it can take up to ten days to fit curtains and up to one week to fit blinds in someone’s home or business. The process involved in fitting has been broken down to a scientific level to ensure that customers are getting what they need and like. Everything must be made to measure and Richard and his team will happily go out and price up any jobs. They cater to customers in and around both Dublin and counties. Furthermore, there is also a full fitting service available is desired.
Carpets
For five generations the Brereton family has been involved in the carpet and flooring industry and they have been kind enough to share some of their wealth of expertise with us at In Wicklow. They cover the area from South County Dublin all of the way down to Wexford. They explained to us that while at first glance the extensive range of products and services offered by various providers can seem overwhelming, with a short conversation to explain the products, customers can quickly narrow down their choices to find the most suitable product for them. Brereton’s, in particular, makes a point of informing customers about the products they are purchasing, including maintenance advice to ensure they receive as much value as possible from their new carpet or flooring. When it comes to choosing the correct type of flooring, whether it be a wood floor or a carpet, the most likely guiding factor in the current climate is most likely to be price. The big question the customer needs to ask themselves is how much they intend
to invest in the product. Are they looking for a short-term or long-term investment? Once this is clear the process of finding the right product is very much simplified. Once this information has been established companies such as Brereton’s will begin taking more exact measurements from customers and arrange fitting details if required. Installation for an average sized room generally takes anywhere from 30 - 45 minutes. Obviously, larger rooms will take somewhat longer than this, but the emphasis is very much on quality as opposed to time, we were told. Customers can also be sure that the people fitting their carpets have been trained to the highest of standards as the industry as a whole takes specific precautions to ensure the quality of its staff. Indeed, all of the professional fitters at Brereton’s have been trained to the ‘Brereton standard’, ensuring a professional service from start to finish. Brereton Carpets has been established on Greystones for the last 22 years and is located on the Main St. just down from the library.
Price: Price with regard to curtains depends very much on the materials used, the specific style and size. It varies a great deal and is very much based around customers’ requirements. With blinds though it is a different matter. The prices are much more predictable and to a large extent there are set prices. For example in his shop Richard sells a 50ml wood Venetian blind (6ft x 4ft) for €90 and blackout blinds (also 6ft x 4ft) start from 80. These prices offer a good guideline and are also particularly competitive prices given the current market. Fashion: Fashion in the home is extremely important to a great number of people and curtains & blinds are an integral aspect to this fashion. There is currently a massive variety of fashion available in the industry. The most popular choices were traditionally natural fabrics, however, in recent years trends have begun to favour modern colours such as lilac and tangerine. While fashion is very much a personal choice Richard Kelly does advise customers to ensure that whatever scheme they do eventually choose to make sure that it matches the windows over which the curtains or blinds will be resting. Otherwise

there could be a potential mismatch that is not easy to amend. Richard is, again, happy to help in this department and through his home advice service he and his team will call out to you and give you a free measurement, assessment and quotation based on your requirements. Richard Kelly Curtains & Blinds can be contacted on 01 286 8218.
Painting
Getting started:Theonemostimportant thing to consider before beginning the emotional journey that is painting the interior of your own home is to take the correct precautions. In whichever room you choose to begin ensure firstly that all valuables that could be irreparably damaged by paint are
removed or else heavily secured. If removal is not an option (for example with a large piano or sideboard this may be the case) then make sure to protect every inch of it from splashes and general spray from the paint and accessories used. An old large bed sheet can be useful for this purpose and you may even employ some plastic bags to assist in the task. Following this, carpets, light switches, sockets and windows should all be secured either with tape or plastic sheets (or a combination of both) to ensure paint does not end up anywhere that it is supposed to. Once this painstaking task has been completed you are ready to paint and you can then go about choosing appropriate paint and relevant equipment for the job.
Paint types: Choosing the right paint is the first and most important step in the process and there are certain considerations that must be borne in mind when doing so. There are, however, two basic types of house paint commonly used in residential homes. The first is latex or water-based paint and oil or alkyd-based paint. While the term latex is used by many DIY companies to refer to water-based paints there is in fact no natural latex in modern paint. Oil-based paint is paint that has a linseed oil or alkyd base. Alkyd is a synthetic oil base. These paints require a solvent such as mineral spirits for thinning and clean-up. Oil- or alkyd-based paints are almost exclusively considered enamels due to their hard durable

homeimprovements gloss or semi-gloss finish and are typically used for coating windows, doors, and woodwork trim. The colour will begin to yellow or darken over time. Acrylic paint is water-based and provides a non-yellowing durable finish. Acrylic enamel or acrylic latex enamel paint is a water-based acrylic paint with a high durability rating. Typically these paints have a non-yellowing gloss or semi-gloss sheen for coating windows, doors, and woodwork trim. Acrylic wall paint and acrylic latex wall paint are water-based paints that contain the acrylic binder, neither contains any natural latex. Most wall paints are not considered enamels however some wall paints carry an enamel label due to their sheen or shine or durability rating. Not all latex paints contain acrylic. Some contain different types of binders, film forming ingredients, and fillers, however, acrylic is considered to be superior to most and is an important ingredient of high-quality paint. Be sure though to check the paint label for the desired sheen but it is important to bear in mind that the more shine the paint has the more it will show surface imperfections!
Brush and roller advice: When it comes to choosing a suitable paint brush for the job here are some helpful tips. For most interior applications with acrylic (latex) paint the best choice is definitely a nylon/polyester blended brush. For windows, doors and woodwork trim a square cut twoand-a-half-inch-trim brush works well for all interior work including cutting in the ceiling and walls. Do not use a 100% nylon paint brush as nylon will become limp and useless after just a few hours of painting. You may consider buying a one-and-a-half or two-inch sash brush to paint around window panes. The bristles of a sash paint brush are cut at an angle to allow for easier painting into the corners and around the glass. Stick with the nylon/polyester blend. It is important though that you not use this brush on doors or flat work. Should you decide to paint your interior trim with an oil-based alkyd paint then your best choice is a most likely a china bristle brush. China bristle is made of hog hair from the Chinese long-haired swine. The white bristle paint brush is softer than the black bristle and seems to apply a smoother finish.
A good paint brush will be tapered at the end of the bristles. The tips of the bristles should be flagged and soft. The bristles should be firm but not stiff. The best indicator of a good paint brush is price. Do not skimp when buying brushes; a cheap brush is harder to use and can ruin the appearance of the finish. For residential purposes a standard nine-inch roller frame is a good choice. Select a quality roller frame; the type that grips the roller cover at the ends seems to rollout smoother than the tension birdcage type of roller frame. Select a good quality roller cover. For latex paint a synthetic fibre 3/8 or 1/2 inch nap gives the best all around performance for painting the smooth or semi-smooth surfaces of walls and ceilings. You should not use a roller paint tray, rather a five-gallon bucket and a roller grid. The grid hangs on the inside rim of the bucket, this allows for rolling off excess paint from the roller. Do not buy cheap roller covers even though you may throw them away at the end of the paint job. Cheap covers do not hold or release paint well and will shed fuzz onto the wall.

With the weather improving day by day and the cold spell well and truly behind us avid gardeners finally have the chance once more to tend to their gardens and make sure that their own outdoor kingdoms look their best and are in tip-top health for the summer season. Here at In Wicklow we have talked with a variety of experts when it comes to gardening in order to share some of their wisdom with our readers to help them to achieve their specific gardening goals. This month the emphasis is on sheds, tools, furniture, decking, fencing and garden accessories. So sit back, relax and enjoy the read and hopefully you will pick up some helpful pointers along the way.
gardeningessentials Garden sheds:
Garden sheds not only add an attractive feature to a well-kept garden but they also serve a practical purpose in that they can house a variety of gardening tools and equipment that would not be suitable for storage in houses or garages. Prices vary a great deal with basic wooden sheds available from around €350, with prices for larger more sophisticated sheds reaching between €1,000 and €2,000. Here is some advice on what to look out for when considering a wooden garden shed:

We carry a complete range of hire equiptment to suit all your needs, from DIY to large builds. We have a delivery service and repair service available. Our prices are very keen and we offer a professional and friendly service.
Q: How should I prepare the site designated for a garden shed? A: You need to choose a clear and level site. Sheds should be
erected on concrete blocks or paving slabs depending on the type of ground. You will generally have to source the blocks yourself and whichever supplier you use should place them correctly when erecting the shed.
Q: How long should I expect delivery and installation of my garden shed to take? A: The average lead-in time for delivery following order is between
seven and ten working days, though if you have an urgent deadline most companies are usually able to accommodate within reason. Depending on the size of the shed chosen erection can take anywhere from between one and three hours.

Q: What should I do to maintain my garden shed? A: Pressure treatment will prevent decay due to dampness but will

Q: Will the timber in my shed crack? A: Timber is a natural product that reacts to changes in temperature
and climate and as such small hairline cracks can develop in timber. This should not be of any major concern.
Q: Should I expect any sort of product guarantee? A: Most garden shed providers will generally provide a guarantee
for at least one year. However, you should check with providers to ensure that they offer some sort of guarantee or warranty and shop

Hoe: there are basically two types of hoe; push hoe and draw
hoe. With a push hoe, the user moves backwards on to the unhoed ground, and thus avoids walking on the newly-hoed weeds. With a draw hoe, the user moves forward towards the un-hoed ground and walks on the newly-hoed area. Raking off the hoed weeds is essential to prevent re-rooting.
Secateurs: the secateurs (or pruners) is the basic pruning
tool. Essential for roses or fruit trees, it will be needed for shrubs on occasion, too. Secateurs are ideal for dead-heading, and for cutting flowers and foliage for indoor use. The type with a curved blade cause less damage to the bark of the pruned stem. Buy good-quality secateurs because, being better designed, they are easier to use, and last longer. A comfortable hand-grip is important.
Hedge-clippers: A hedge clippers is essential if there is a hedge to be trimmed, but they can also be used to keep lawn edges
gardeningessentials neat. Hedge-clippers should not be used on shrubs, except in certain cases, such as heather, broom and lavender where there are a lot of shoots close together.
Garden furniture:
Garden furniture is specifically designed for outdoor use. It is typically made of weather-resistant materials such as cedar, teak, wicker, wrought iron and aluminium. It can involve a substantial financial investment, though garden furniture as a rule depends to be particularly durable. Aside from traditional garden furniture such as benches, tables and parasols other items such as loungers and outdoor heaters (particularly suitable for the Irish climate!) have become increasingly more popular. While the style of the furniture itself is important, the material that is used to construct it is by far the most significant consideration as this will determine its durability and to a large extent how fashionable it is. Here is the essential information that you need to know about the four main materials that should ensure a sound investment:
Aluminium is a lightweight and easily moulded metal that will not rust. The construction method is used today, primarily for pool area furniture and lawn chairs. These pieces are very lightweight, which allows for easy portability, however, at the same time, they are susceptible to high winds and harsh elements. For sturdier furniture, often taking the form of benches and outdoor dining, it is highly recommended that cast aluminium be purchased. This type of aluminium composition is more durable and can withstand the elements far greater than standard aluminium. Decking:

Teak outdoor furniture is one of the most attractive, weather
resistant, longest lasting types of outdoor furniture available on the current market. On top of that, it’s almost maintenance free and made from a renewable resource, making it not only a cost-effective solution to your outdoor furniture needs, but also a purchase you can make with a clean conscience.
Wicker is often woven on a rattan frame, a natural material that does not hold up particularly to moisture. All-weather wickers are, however, woven from resin, synthetic material that can be formed into narrow vine-like pieces that look like natural materials. Resin wicker can hold up to the harsh weather conditions and some manufacturers boast that it can be left outside year round, even in northern climates. For cedar outdoor furniture, bad weather will not easily compromise the integrity of the material. That means that outdoor furniture made from cedar has natural resistance to rotting, cracking and warping - leaving just the natural beauty of the wood. Cedar is also resistant to fungus, so the only colour properties of this outdoor furniture will be the natural weathering of the wood to a silvery gray (if left unfinished). The life of the product could easily reach eight to ten years and that’s if the piece is untreated and left outside yearround.

Decking, though, can be a complicated issue and many people considering such an addition may not be as informed as they would like to be on the subject and that is why we have gone to the experts to get answers to the most common questions on the subject:
Q: Would I be able to install my own timber deck or would I need to hire a professional? A: Of course it is possible for the seasoned
DIY person to tackle decking, though a high degree of competence is required. Using a professional will not only give you the peace of mind that your deck has been designed and installed to the highest industry standards but using a skilled decking professional will also give you

access to the wealth of designs possible and excellent advice on finishes and maintenance procedures. This should ensure that you have the right product for you at the end and that it is safe and secure.
Q: How much should I expect to pay for a deck? A: The price of a timber deck will obviously
vary enormously depending on factors such as design and size. However, it would be reasonable to say that a DIY-installed deck will cost a lot less than a professionally designed and installed one. A professionally designed and installed deck will most likely cost more, however, compared to other major home improvements such as a new kitchen or conservatory, decks offer great value. Professional deck designers and installers have the knowledge and experience to ensure that you end up with a quality product that will last a long time and perform marvellously. If you are considering

hiring a professional then the best course of action may be to try a few different companies and individuals and request quotes from them for the job. This should give you a good indication with regard to price and also the service that you could expect.
Q: How long will a timber deck last? A: A timber deck should provide many
years of pleasure. That is because naturally durable timber species or rot-proof pressurepreserved wood is used in their construction. If the deck has been built using the correct materials and good building practices then it will last almost indefinitely if properly looked after. In fact, many decking professionals will have their own quality schemes and standards and in many cases you should be able to secure a performance warranty of between 15 and 25 years. This

gardeningessentials would be another plus with regard to hiring a professional to complete the job as opposed to attempting to do so yourself.
Fencing:
Garden fencing is effective in both adding value to your property and giving you more privacy outdoors. The various types of fencing available include overlap, picket, castle and trellis. Pressure-treated fencing gives an extended life to the product and requires less maintenance. Below are some of the most common questions that experts are asked when it comes to fencing:
Q: What size Fencing Panels are available? A: Sizes generally range from 6ft x 2ft
(1.8m x .6m) up to 6ft X 6ft (1.8 x 1.8m). Though, special requirements can also be catered for. The price of fencing obviously depends very much on how much you require and whether it has been either diptreated or pressure-treated.
A: The hit & miss panels are especially suitable for exposed areas those with strong winds as the design allows wind to pass through the panels but still provides privacy. Trellis panels are also suitable for this purpose but do not afford the same privacy. Q: Should I expect any sort of warranty or guarantee? A: Generally, suppliers will have high-
quality standards and as such should provide guarantees of at least one year. A guarantee is also a good indication that a company has confidence in its product so this should be a significant consideration.
Garden accessories:
Once you have all of the essential gardening out of the way, gardening accessories can put the final touch to your outdoor masterpiece.
Q: Are fencing panels pressure treated? A: Fencing panels are supplied either
dip-treated or pressure-treated. Panels that have been pressure treated have been impregnated with chemicals to prolong the life of the panel.
Q: What sort of fencing would be particularly suitable for exposed or windy sites?
Accessories can include anything from water features and walls to garden gnomes and patios. What is important to note is the durability of whatever you do end up purchasing as a garden accessory. Many shops will offer what look to be the perfect additions for your garden, however, they may be entirely unsuitable. Remember these accessories will be permanently outdoors and many items bought in general shops are not designed as such. It is therefore advisable to buy garden accessories from shops and centres that specialise in gardening. They are more likely to be able to provide you with suitable additions for your garden. While they may cost slightly more they will more than likely be much more durable and will add value in the long term. Furthermore, staff in garden centres are experts in their field and can advise you on what would and would not work in your garden as no two gardens are alike!

vondale House and Forest Park has much to offer the visitor whether their interest is in Charles Stewart Parnell and our national history, the development of forestry in Ireland or the extensive collection of trees and shrubs from around the globe. It is also a great place to visit just to enjoy the unique beauty of one of Wicklow’s outstanding historic estates. Avondale House was built in 1777 for Samuel Hayes a barrister who represented Wicklow in the Irish House of Commons. It passed to the Parnell Family in 1795 and it was in Avondale in 1846 that Charles Stewart Parnell was born – one the greatest political leaders of modern Irish history. The house is now a Museum to his memory with many items relating to Parnell, fine pieces of furniture and original plasterwork. Visitors are introduced to the house with the award winning audio visual presentation on the History of Parnell and Avondale before viewing the house and its contents. Avondale is synonymous with the birth of Irish Forestry. The State purchased Avondale in 1904 and it was at Avondale that the first silvicultural experimental plots were laid out along the lines of a continental forest garden. The park has a number of marked trails including the beautiful River Walk on the banks of the Avonmore River, the Centenary Trail and Sli na Slainte walk, three orienteering courses that offer great fun for the family, just download maps and information on www.coillteoutdoors.ie You can travel by train to Rathdrum and take the Railway Walk from the train station into the beautiful Avondale Estate. For the younger members of the family there is a play area and plenty of picnic benches and seats to just sit and enjoy your peaceful surroundings. Dogs are welcome but please – on a lead.
Situated on the ground floor of the main house where the original Kitchen of Avondale was located is ‘The Kitchen Café’, recently refurbished, original vaulted ceilings and offers light meals, home made soups, bread’s and scones, variety of lunchtime specials also fresh sandwiches and cakes. Children’s parties, as many of you will know, can be an absolute nightmare to organise at times. First there’s the challenge of actually getting all of the children together into an organised unit that will listen to instruction somewhat. Then there’s the ongoing issue of keeping them fed & watered and, most importantly, entertained. Well, fear no longer as we have taken the time to put together a definitive guide to children’s parties that covers all of venues & entertainment, cakes & catering and favours & decorations.

partyideas Venues & entertainment When it comes to entertainment for children at parties there are two main choices that can be made. The first is to choose to entertain the eager-eyed younglings in your own home or garden which works for many, however, the second choice – choosing an outside venue to host your party – seems to be the more popular choice for many parents whenever possible.
Really Grand Events is another company that will travel to your home anywhere in Ireland to look after your children’s party needs. You can have a clown, balloon modeller, magician, puppet show (pantomime Punch and Judy), face painting, princess party, jewellery making party, disco, kids karaoke, or a make-up party. Parties are all flexible in what you need and can be themed. Really Grand Events have over 17 years’ experience in kids’ entertainment and you can get in touch with them via telephone at 01 441 7371 or via email at info@reallygrandevents.com. Entertainment acts for parties are also a nice touch and there is nothing better than the traditional stylings of a magician to put a smile on kids’ and adults’ faces. Carl Campbell (AKA Magic Carl) is a Dublinbased full time professional Magician. Carl and his magic rabbit ‘Mr Fluffy’ perform magic shows all around Ireland every week. Magic Carl’s show is a high energy, funny comedy magic show suitable for children of all ages. Carl’s show is full of audience participation, magic and illusions. In fact, the birthday child helps the magician make ‘Mr Fluffy’ appear at the end of the party. More information about Carl is available online at www.magiccarl.ie.
Hosting a children’s party at home can seem like a daunting prospect, though, there is thankfully quite a bit of professional outside assistance that can be drafted in. One option is to have someone organise the entire party for you and companies such as a Magical Genie Mackers party can help in this regard. They organise themed parties with magic shows, face painting, karaoke, party games, puppets, balloon animals and more. More information on the service provided by Magical Genie Mackers can be found on www.geniemackers.com.
Bouncy castles are also especially popular with children at parties. Marquee Hire is a company that operates in the South East and they have bouncy castles in all sizes – they even have ball pools for toddlers! The winners of the 2011 Arklow Business Awards were as follows: Community Service Award : Cancer Support Group. Best Small Business : KJ Butchers. Best Service Provider : Sovereign Security Ltd. Best Manufacturing Award : Servier (Ireland) Industries. Best Retail Award : McMullans. Best New Business : Hugo’s. Best Innovation Award : Placido 3D. Best Customer Care Award : The Bay Health & Leisure Club. Best Eating Establishment : The Park Restaurant. The Overall Business Award for 2011 was awarded to Arklow Shipping Ltd. In his address Mr Freddie Millar, Arklow Chamber and Wicklow County Chamber President said that “many business have had to cut their costs by up to 30% in the current economic climate, it is the Chamber’s view that local authorities should be reducing their costs by a similar amount, through making efficiencies in all departments and that such savings should be passed back to the commercial rate payer through commercial and water rate reductions. It is likely that businesses would use this saving to invest in their businesses, to create employment and thus help stimulate the local economy. We will be asking all County Chamber members and other businesses to lobby local Councillor’s and TD’s to bring about this much needed reduction in their business costs. If we fail to secure this reduction it is felt that there will be many more job losses in the county.” The President congratulated all the Business Award nominees and winners and thanked everyone for their continued support of the Chamber. The Best Dressed Lady sponsored by D-Fine Hair & Beauty was Marion Conaghan and the Best Dressed Man sponsored by The Man Shop was Neil Harris. The night was a huge success and a very positive evening to support and celebrate success in business in Arklow. The recipient charity on the night was the St Vincent de Paul. Thank you to everyone who nominated the businesses and who supported this event.

golf course review BRIAN COX, AUTHOR OF RYDER CUP IRELAND, PLAYS TULFARRIS, A SPECTACULAR GOLF COURSE AMIDST THE BEAUTY OF WICKLOW
F
our of us played Tulfarris golf course recently. Enda McLoughlin, the pro at Wicklow golf club, his assistant Conor, Aengus - InWicklow’s editor and yours truly looked forward to a competitive round. It was a welcome opportunity for me to be reacquainted with a stretch I played before. I teamed up with Enda against the two young aspiring players. The venue was Tulfarris, a superb 18 hole championship course located on the shores of Blessington Lakes in the midst of a 200 acre woodland bordered by the majestic rolling hills of our garden county, Wicklow. A COURSE FOR EVERY GOLFER The parkland layout is set on three peninsulas and renowned golf course architect, Patrick J. Merrigan, used all the positives of the exquisite natural landscape and wildlife habitat to blend an exciting and challenging design to test all golfers. Tulfarris was officially opened in 1991. The Irish Seniors Open and Club Professional Championships were staged here. The professionals love the venue. So too do the top class amateurs. Golfers of all handicaps love to play Tulfarris. There are three lengths with the longest

being off the blue tees stretching to 7,100 yards, 6,700 yards off the whites and at 6,432 yards the more manageable length from the green tees for the average golfers. The course from the women’s red tees measures 5,696 yards. The facilities here are excellent and include pull-trolley and buggy hire. There are also caddies available. If putting is your concern you can practise here to your heart’s delight. Those who want to venture out to the main practice area can enjoy short or long periods perfecting that swing or improving the short game. COURSE MANAGEMENT Enda reflected on his round afterwards. He loves the course. He drew attention to the importance of course management at Tulfarris. Every hole is different but great. There are dog-legs right and left that put a premium on driving accuracy. If you are not accurate you pay the price of an unwelcome visit to the shrubbery, woodlands or a watery grave. He referred to two signature holes as examples, the 10th and 17th. The 10th is a 434 yarder off the whites. You must land your tee shot on the right-hand side of the fairway. Too much left will en-
courage the ball to fall down a slope ending in the rough leaving you an extremely difficult second to an undulating green. After nine holes Enda and I were trailing by a few points - commonly known as stableford points. Our opponents were relishing the occasion. Enda’s skill as a profesional became especially evident at the par 5 13th when an arrow straight drive with a high trajectory left him a long way down the middle of the fairway. His precision struck 5 iron carried more than 180 yards before landing like a wet blanket on the green. He holed the downhill eagle putt of 25 feet. Conor and Aengus were visibly shocked. Game on! The 17th was another signature hole. It is rated index 1 on the card which means it is regarded as the toughest of the 18 holes. It’s not a particularly long one but it emphasised Enda’s point of thinking your way around the course. Power driving is not an issue here. Club selection is essential and that was why he chose an iron to place his tee shot in the ideal spot leaving him a second across a threatening lake that demands total commitment to your swing process. It’s mind over

matter. Enda narrowly missed his birdie attempt here. Aengus and Conor, the two young guns with low handicaps, put an end to our formidable comeback on the very last hole. We swallowed our pride acknowledging their partnership was the better. The round lasted about four and a half hours and we were particularly fortunate in being out in very benign conditions with temperatures in the late teens Celsius. RELAXING AND UNWINDING A visit to the Lime Tree Restaurant was our next port of call. We were all ravenous and enjoyed the very best of cuisine. Superlatives are insufficient to describe the high standard of cuisine that welcomed us. The friendly atmosphere from all members of staff was palpable. There was a great buzz about the place. There were many other golfers there but so too were couples and families who came for a day’s outing or overnight stay at the Hotel and Golf Resort. There is so much to do here at this complex, golf being our main attraction. In fact, over the years the location has attracted many golf enthusiasts from Scotland and England who know and appreciate this Royal and Ancient game. Most
There are other attractions. The Tulfarris complex has recently opened The Annex Treatment Rooms. Here guests can avail of the opportunity to de-stress and unwind. Guests, golfers among them, can have a Swedish massage, aromatic facials, manicures and pedicures. Enda, Conor, Aengus and I gave these a miss but on a return visit I will definitely have a Swedish massage. The main hotel has 30 deluxe rooms and 30 suites, all with comfort and relaxation in mind. Part of the complex includes the 18th century Manor House which has been tastefully and sensitively restored. Each
room was individually designed to allow stunning views across the beautiful lakes to the exquisite mountainous landscape that embraces the Hotel and Golf Resort. There is a great respect for the environment here. This feature is recognised by all who come here and in turn it provides great therapy for the soul. Whatever your heart’s delight - perhaps a birthday celebration, a wedding event or a conference occasion, you will find this venue ideal. Guests who are interested in local history can pay a visit to nearby Russborough House which houses the Beit collection of paintings. Also a short driving distance away you can visit The Japanese Gardens, The National Stud and the former monastic city of Glendalough. Perhaps you want to take part in a choice of activi-
ties available at the Hotel and Golf Resort. These include tennis, walking and jogging or fishing and boating on the lake. Maybe it is just peace and quiet you long for. You can stay put and indulge in just being here and being pampered by a wonderful and caring staff. I would recommend that you go and spoil yourself. Arrange a small group of golfers, play, wine and dine and stay overnight at very competitive rates. Tulfarris welcomes groups and societies who will be pleasantly surprised with the good value packages and specials on offer. Those interested in organising golf charity events here will be delighted with the course, the cuisine and hospitality. You will thoroughly enjoy the experience and will want to return like many others. May is a particularly interesting month in a sporting context with so many seasonlong ambitions coming to a head. While, at the other end of the scale sporting individuals and teams alike will have their dreams crushed as the harsh reality of a distinct sense of failure sets in as the decisive picture becomes ever clearer. This statement is particularly pertinent when it comes to football for the Premier League title clearly revolves around just two teams and the number of potential Champions League victors has been whittled down to the final two. Elsewhere in the sporting world tennis gears up for its second major tournament of the year; the French Open at the iconic Rolland Garros in Paris and Phil ‘the Power’ Taylor has begun to find his form once more in the PDC Premier League Darts. May is also a month to reflect on significant recent Irish sporting achievements that included two significant victories over the ‘old enemy’ in both rugby and surprisingly cricket and the Irish football team is well placed to qualify for Euro 2012. Football: FA Cup Final Saturday, 14 May 2011 15:00 The 2011 FA Cup Final will be the 130th final of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest domestic football cup competition. The match is scheduled to take place on 14 May 2011 at Wembley Stadium in London. The contesting teams are Manchester City and Stoke City. The 2011 FA Cup Final will be Manchester City’s ninth FA Cup Final in their 130-year history and Stoke City’s first-ever FA Cup Final in their 148 years of existence. 2011 UEFA Champions League Final Saturday, 28th May 2011 The 2011 UEFA Champions League Final will be the

The match will be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England which will be hosting a record sixth European Cup final. There is guaranteed to be a Spanish team in the 2011 final, as Barcelona and Real Madrid are contesting the second semi-final. The other semi-final is between Manchester United and Schalke 04. If Manchester United make it through, it will be their third final in four years, including the 2009 final against Barcelona, while Schalke have never played in a European Cup final before. As well as their victorious final appearance in 2009, in recent years Barcelona have also been involved in the 2006 final against Arsenal, which they also won. Tennis: French Open 2011 Start: Monday, 23 May 2011, End: Sunday, 05 June 2011 Roland Garros, Paris The 2011 French Open (also known as Roland Garros, after the famous French aviator) will be a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It will be the 110th edition of the French Open, and the second Grand Slam event of the year. Last season the 2010 French Open marked the culmination of a player sweeping the major titles of the entire clay court season––the final act of the Tao of Nadal. No man has quite dominated the red dirt so completely since Bjorn Borg did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. That said, no individual has yet to equal Chris Evert’s record on clay, man or woman by winning 125 consecutive matches on the red dirt, and seven French Open titles in nine final appearances. Is it possible that Nadal could surpass even the ice maiden? There are few mysteries abounding about the results on clay in 2011. If Nadal can hobble on to the court, then he will no doubt win, according to the odds-makers.
pcd premier darts The 2011 PDC Premier League Darts season reaches the playoff stages in London on the 19th of this month following 14 intensive league nights held at venues around the United Kingdom. The semi-finals and final will all be played in one night as the tournament culminates and the winner of the £400,000 sterling event is decided. After a slow start to the competition the legendary Phil Taylor has found some form and is already guaranteed his place in the playoffs at Wembley. Others vying to join him are Simon Whitlock, Mervyn King, Ronnie Baxter, James Wade and Adrian Lewis. But only three more players will make it to London meaning there will be at least one or two big names missing out!
