Double Bill: 565+ / Victor and Gord Friday 1st July 8pm €18/€16 conc. Una McKevitt makes theatre from everyday life. In this special double bill she brings to Mermaid her Absolut Fringe sell-out show Victor and Gord and 565+, seen at The Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival 2010. A combination to make you laugh and break your heart. Real life friends Vickey Curtis and Aine McKevitt aka Victor and Gord have only one thing in common: each other. 565 + is about survival. For Marie O’Rourke it is the theatre. Post-performance in-conversation between Dr Patrick Lonergan, Synge Summer School and director and cast.

BAthrooms As

part of our regular monthly features on home improvements, this month the focus is on bathrooms and kitchens and the various options open to budding DIT enthusiasts. Therefore, we decided to once more get in touch with the experts in the field so that you, our reader, are as well informed on the subject as possible. So we paid a visit to Tony Murphy in Tilestyle at the Ballymount Retail Centre in Dublin. Tilestyle – as the name suggests – specialises in tiling and decoration for homes and Tony was kind enough to share his expertise with us at .

homeimprovements room is a functional room that not only complements your home but can cope with the heavy demands of everyday life. Tilestyle staff are trained with excellent product knowledge and insights on design that can lead you through the myriad of product selection. For example, toilets can be close-coupled, back-to-wall, wall-hung, low-level or high-level. Basins can be wall-mounted, pedestal or semi-pedestal, countertop, semi-recessed or under-counter basins. That’s not even taking into account the types of vanity units or showers availWhat types of designs are available at TileStyle? The choices of design available at the Porcelanosa showroom at TileStyle vary from contemporary to traditional style. They have created the showroom for those customers with an interest in interior décor, design, avant-garde architecture and the latest trends and who recognise value and quality. Tilestyle is packed with exciting ideas; particularly on bathroom design and value, creating and making the most of these modern displays by presenting individual product displays in room-like settings. What would be the approximate cost of getting your bathroom refurbished? For many customers a bathroom is a big investment in their home since it will be remain in place for at least ten to fifteen years. Costs vary depending on the design of products selected, but at Tilestyle they thrive to ensure that they have something to suit every pocket with toilets from the ‘City’ range starting at €229 and €169 for a basin and pedestal. That should give potential customers some sort of guide with regard to price. What is the average lead-in time and completion time for a job? The lead time to having your bathroom remodeled is approximately one week by a bathroom installer based

on an average sized room. The product selection and delivery will vary from product to product. Some products in-stock can obviously be fitted more quickly, while others can have longer lead times up to a number of weeks. So the best advice would be to plan any major changes well in advance. Are there any particular styles or designs that are popular at the moment? The experts at Tilestyle see trends over the next year remaining quite classic and understated; monochrome colours such as black, white and grey. Products such as the ‘Piano’ vanity unit meet this style with a mirror in an oval shape built in above and below the unit. The introduction of tap-ware in finishes of black or white can also add to the creation of unique room designs. Is there any additional advice that you feel readers would benefit from when it comes to choosing a bathroom? It is essential that your finished bath-

KITCHENS There are of course decoration and style considerations, though the significant difference is potential equipment costs. Modern kitchens can be kitted out with anything from large multi-functional refrigerators to the latest oven. There are numerous professional outfits that will come into your home and makeover your kitchen for you and do an excellent job, however, this is the expensive option. Given the effect that the current economic climate is having on the pockets of home improvers this will not be a viable option for many DIY enthusiasts. A number of companies have latched on to this trend and catering for such changing needs with operators such as IKEA offering self-assemble kitchens. Granted this is by far the cheapest way of doing up your kitchen, there are potential pitfalls (mainly fi-

12

inWICKLOW June 2011

Doing up one’s bathroom is indeed a massive undertaking, however, when it comes to kitchens things can get a little bit more complicated and more expensive.

homeimprovements nancial) that can be avoided by following some of these cost-saving tips: Paint: it might sound obvious, but the cheapest and quickest way to change a space for the better is a gallon or two of the right paint. If you stick to neutral colours, you can add accessories, art, or curtains in a striking colour as an accent. Neutral colours also sell well if you were to decide to move. Cabinets: kitchen cabinets are an excellent starting point to change the look of your kitchen. If your cabinet bases are in reasonably good shape, paint the cabinets and add new premade cabinet doors. If you would rather not paint, consider staining the cabinets if the wood is in good condition. A dark stain in cherry or dark teak will update the look quite nicely. But remember to strip and sand them before you stain the cabinets. The time spent stripping and sanding will pay off in the professional look of the stained result. If you choose to paint, after you do so take the doors off the top cabinets entirely to give them an open look. Appliances: adding updated modern kitchen appliances can do wonders for the look of the kitchen. Brushed nickel or pewter knobs is a modern style can take decades off the style of your kitchen. If your appliances are in good working order, you can update their look by painting them. If you are afraid to do so yourself, you can call in a professional to do the job, which will be much less than buying new appliances.

Countertops: new countertops are available at a variety of home improvement shops around the country. They are generally pre-cut and ready to install. These pre-cut tops are very cost effective, especially if you choose a colour or style that is on sale. The main expense when hiring a professional to do this for you is the labour so the savings are considerable. Floor: the new modern styles of press and stick vinyl tiles look surprisingly high-end and they can be purchased at very competitive prices. Furthermore, installation is quick and painless making vinyl an obvious choice.

A touch of Spanish elegance and style for Irish bathroom design A clear sign of the times with regard to bathroom design can be seen with Porcelanosa – Spain’s foremost bathroom designers – having recently opened an exclusive showroom at the TileStyle outlet at Ballymount in Dublin. The new showroom was officially launched by Silvestre Segarra of the famous Segarra design family from Villareal, Castellon, Spain.

Offering the very latest designs in baths, shower, bathroom furniture and sanitary ware, the Porcelanosa brand is synonymous with a purity of design whilst remaining sympathetic to the shape of the human form. With over 410 showrooms in 72 countries, Porcelanosa is renowned for its state-of-the-art technology, innovative designs and unbeatable quality. No stranger to celebrity brand admirers including Oscar de la Renta, Orlando Bloom, George Clooney and Sofia Loren, Porcelanosa more recently celebrated being granted the royal warranty of HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. The full Porcelanosa bathroom range can be viewed at the TileStyle showrooms in Ballymount where expert staff are on hand to advise on best design practice in keeping with any budget.

Wicklow

is undoubtedly one of the more beautiful counties in all of Ireland. Indeed, it is no coincidence that it has earned the title of the ‘Garden County’. Wicklow town in particular is a vibrant place offering a variety of activities for all kinds of potential visitors. There is plenty to do and see throughout the county and its ideal location makes it accessible to guests from numerous neighbouring counties. In order to help you find what you want in Wicklow we have put together a comprehensive guide of attractions, carefully listed under various categories.

Your Local Chamber Wicklow Town & District Chamber is the leading business organisation in the area. The membership is just over 160 businesses and they represent a wide variety of industries including Manufacturing, Professional Services, Financial Services, Retail, Computers & Technology, Media, Sports & Leisure, etc. It is this mix of membership that enables it to be the united voice for the business community in Wicklow Town and its Environs. For many years it has been the Wicklow Chamber that has focused the business community into creating a vibrant self- supporting town where people can live, work and enjoy the natural beauty which is abundant in the area. The Chamber has a number of responsibilities and duties to its members, many of which are carried out under the auspices of the Chamber office and therefore it can sometimes be quite difficult for the general public to understand what it is doing on behalf of the local business community. However you can rest assured that they are con-

stantly working on your behalf; be it by lobbying the town and county councils; organising business events that contribute to local economic growth; providing funding for worthwhile causes like the tidy towns; and sitting on important strategic boards that can seriously benefit the town and county. We are always working to make things better. The Chamber is the voice of Wicklow’s business community; IT’S YOUR BUSINESS VOICE

Events to help local business thrive Wicklow Business Showcase 2011 The Wicklow Business Showcase took place on Thursday the 19th May and was considered by many to be a great success. Over 60 businesses were represented on the day which got underway at 12.00 with an opening speech by Fine Gaol TD Andrew Doyle. Andrew spoke about how small businesses which are going through a very tough time at the moment are forging on regardless and it is that “Can Do” attitude and “Never Say Die” spirit which singles us

out as a nation and allows us to survive. He also went on to say that Government cannot create the actual jobs but can provide a platform to enable a sustainable economy which will see us at the fore of global markets once again. He wished every success to the event and promised that he would not be found wanting when it comes to fighting for the rights and needs of the people of Wicklow. During the day a number of key note speakers gave talks on various interesting subjects. At 2.00pm Denis Fielding of Acuity SOS IT Solutions gave a very informative talk on “What is Cloud Computing & How can it benefit your Business”. At 4.00pm Michael Kinsella gave a speech on “The Ballynagran Project” and how renewable energy businesses can thrive in this current market. And finally at 7.00pm Blaise Brosnan of the “Management Resource Institute” gave a very uplifting talk on “The next step after a recession”. All talks were well attended and many of the exhibitors commented on how useful they were. Wicklow Town & District Chamber

visitwicklow President Denis Fielding was delighted with how the day went; “I must say I felt a lot of positivity in the room all day, many local business were quite surprised with the high quality of goods and services that were on offer. A big thank you must go to the Grand Hotel which hosted the event and all those who gave their time to make the day a successful one. He went on to say “it was also great to see our chosen charity for 2011 “Autism Initiatives” making the most of the exposure and really engaging with the local business community. They are a fantastic group of people and I hope businesses now know more about the great work that they do for the locality”. He went on to thank Paul Smith of The Mystic Celt for providing numerous cooking demonstrations all day long which kept the exhibitors and guests well entertained and fed for the duration. The special prize on the day which was open to exhibitors was won by Cathal Cooney of Cooney Parle Accountants and he will be setting off

soon for a 2 night B&B holiday in the Mayfly Hotel, Foxford, Co Mayo which was kindly sponsored by Veronica Timmlin of the Grand Hotel. The Showcase Committee would like to thank “The Wicklow People, East Coast Radio, the Irish Times and the Wicklow Times”, for the advertising and exposure it gave the event over the past few weeks. And they’d finally like to thank all those who put stands in to the event which made the day the success it was.

Wicklow Town & District Chamber Website Tuesday 5th of April saw the launch of the Wicklow Town & District Chambers long awaited new revamped website in The Grand Hotel. The revamp of the Website was seen as a key objective for the organisation this year. The objective was to try and improve on what was already a very professional and informative business tool for our members. A new focus on integrating this site with key social media aspects such as Facebook and LinkedIn was

INKE AUT REFILLS O

key to its implementation. The new site although still undergoing improvements demonstrates the potential of promoting current member’s businesses as well as all that is new and good for business generally around Wicklow Town and its environs. The Chamber urges members to be as proactive as possible by submitting tips and information from your business sector. Some additional features of the new website is a Find a Service Tool; a direct link to each members own website; a calendar of events that can be synchronized with members own outlook calendars and Start your own business section. At the launch, The Chambers President Mr Denis Fielding thanked Ms. Veronica Timmins from The Grand Hotel for generously sponsoring the site and he also extended his gratitude to Mr. Michael Connolly from Marlton Media for the design & development and providing an easy to use “Content Management System”.

In

modern times there is an ever increasing emphasis being put on both waste management and recycling by society in general. In the various cases the focus is on reducing waste and reusing and recycling materials. Owing to current trends, here at In Wicklow we have decided to delve into waste management and recycling to highlight all of the most important information for you in order to help reduce waste costs and the respective impact of same on the environment.

History Waste management in Ireland historically got little attention and support from government as it was seen as a local authority function. The problems included little regulatory framework and no external regulation of local authority waste activities. Low-technology options were widely used and it was clear by the mid-1990s that Ireland’s recycling rate was among the lowest in the EU. Ireland overused the landfill network, had no biological treatment capability and no means of recovering energy from waste. The Waste Management Act 1996 represented the first piece of significant progress with regard to change as it introduced new

28

inWICKLOW June 2011

regulations and new powers to public services. Then in 1998 under a Government policy document “Waste Management: Changing our Ways” recycling and recovery targets were set out to be achieved over a fifteen-year timeframe. The policy aimed to achieve the following by 2013: Diversion of 50% of household waste from landfill. Minimum 65% reduction in biodegradable wastes consigned to landfill. Recycling of 35% of municipal waste. Recycling of 85% of construction waste.

wastemanagement As of recently, the targets of recycling 35% of municipal waste and 85% of construction waste had been achieved. Approximately 29.5% of household waste was diverted to landfill. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also re-examined its calculations for biodegradable waste in 2008 and established a new target of 65% reduction in biodegradable waste to be consigned to landfill by 2016. In 2009, a reduction of 18% biodegradable waste consigned to landfill was achieved.

Helpful tips to reduce your household waste Composting is an ideal way of reducing the amount of household waste significantly. Indeed, one third of the household waste you throw away could be used for composting. An average household that composts at home

could expect to divert over 150kg of waste from landfill each year – that’s equivalent in weight to a baby elephant! Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost. Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. For composting to work properly, your bin needs both air and moisture. Air is essential to the composting process and by mixing the material, as you fill your bin, it will create air pockets and help keep your compost healthy. Some of the following can be utilised for composting: tea bags, fruit and vegetable peelings, old flowers and dead plants and crushed egg shells. However, you should be sure to avoid putting the following in your compost heap: cooked vegetables, meat, dairy products and dog excrement or cat litter. Another great way to reduce your household waste is to reuse materials at home either in their original form, with

possibly just a small amount of repair, or for a different purpose. Alternately you can find them a new home. To donate or sell unwanted items of furniture, books, mobile phones, computers, printer cartridges or clothes you can try one of the many available outlets; charity shops, recycling centres and ‘bring’ banks. Recycling is probably the most effective method of waste management. Indeed, recent studies conducted in Ireland have indicated that upwards of 90% of all household waste can be recycled. Here in Ireland we seem to have caught on to the recycling trend somewhat later than our European counterparts. In countries such as Germany effective community recycling schemes have already been in operation for decades. Bottle and aluminium container deposits have been massively influential in reducing amounts of waste going to landfill. Similar incentives for citizens are set to be introduced here in Ireland with the distinct aim of encouraging people to recycle more frequently.

Overview Do to a combination of financial, environmental and legal pressures the role of recycling in modern life is becoming ever more prominent. So many materials can be recycled – many that you might not even have considered as being recyclable. Some materials you can recycle at home by placing them into your green recycle bin and others can be recycled by taking them to your local

recycling centre or civic amenity site. To highlight the important role that recycling plays in society today we have compiled the following interesting facts.

Notable recycling facts: Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy required to produce aluminium from raw materials.

In County Wicklow there is a healthy, vibrant recycling ethos in operation. This is reflected in the five centres – dedicated to recycling – that are strategically located around the county. Information on locations, opening times and types of materials accepted are as follows:

Recycling just one plastic bottle will save enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for three hours. Since Repak was established in Ireland in 1997, over 4.4 million tonnes of used packaging has been diverted from landfill, that’s enough waste to create a trail of trucks from Dublin to New York.

A wide variety of ‘clean’ materials are accepted free of charge at recycling centres. They are: cardboard, plastic bottles and plastic wrapping, glass packaging, drink cans, steel packaging, milk and drink cartons, newspapers and magazines, office papers, batteries, used electrical goods, fluorescent tubes and light bulbs, clothing and textiles, books, CDs, phones, wrapping paper and spectacle frames. rene packaging is accepted at Arklow, Bray and The Murrough. To find out more information about recycling the following two websites are of great assistance: www.recyclemore.ie, www. repak.ie.

The future of recycling in Ireland The future of recycling certainly looks bright in Ireland. The country has seen a recycling revolution over the last decade. Initiatives and pro-active organisations such as Repak have been massively influential in this regard. Future trends that we are likely to experience are the further minimisation of packaging to make packaging more recyclable and to reduce reliance on landfill, increased on-the-spot fines for littering, household refuse charges applied relative to total weight and an increase in number of recycling facilities for communities. Such initiatives will not only help Ireland to meet its recycling targets as set out by the European Union, but also drastically reduce the amount of waste produced in the country.

June June in the sporting world is very much a time of transition. Major club competitions such as The Premier League and Heineken Cup have come to an end with sides now rebuilding for the new season ahead as the respective transfer windows reopen. Meanwhile, the golf season is getting into full swing with the second major championship of the year, The US Open, taking place from June 16th – 19th at Congressional Country Club in Maryland, USA. Most of the best players in the world will be on show, with the notable exception being the former world number one – Tiger Woods. However, the new generation (led by current No.1 Luke Donald) looks primed to entertain the masses at Congressional. It’s also major time in the tennis world with Wimbledon taking centre stage for two weeks from the 20th. Andy Murray will lead the ‘home’ charge in the Men’s tournament, with the Scotsman looking to finally end his major drought following a fine showing at the French Open.

Wimbledon June 20th – July 3rd Wimbledon, London, Great Britain The 2011 Wimbledon Championships will be held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, United Kingdom from June 20 to July 3, 2011. It will be the third Grand Slam event for the 2011 ATP World Tour and the 2011 WTA Tour. Wimbledon 2011 will be the 125th time that The All England Lawn Tennis Club will have hosted The Championships since the first tournament in 1877. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. There were no Championships held between 1915-1918 and 1940-1945 due

to the First World War and Second World War. Wimbledon 2011 promises to provide another great tennis tournament in the summer grand slam series. The grass at the Championships always provides a fun change of pace after the French Open clay. After missing out on the Australian Open this year, Andy Murray is hoping to make history in 2011 and triumph at Wimbledon. Paddy Power.com are offering 11/2 odds that he achieves this and wins the title in 2011. Following Rafael Nadal’s recent form, he is odds on favourite to win this year at 7/4 closely followed by Roger Federer at 9/4 and Novak Djokovic at 3/1. For anyone feeling lucky and fancies taking a chance on more of an outsider Paddy Power.com is giving odds of 18/1 on Juan Martin Del Potro which may be of interest.

In the women’s singles, once again the top three favourites are all quite close, with Maria Sharapova the favourite at 10/3. Current Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams, who has won the prestigious competition on four separate occasions is at 5/1, whilst Na Li is at 7/1.

Wladimir Klitschko vs David Haye

BOXING July 2nd Hamburg Imtech Arena, Germany The date and venue are set, and the TV partners have been decided. World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko will face nemesis David Haye, finally, on July 2 in Hamburg, Germany. The fight will be carried around the world, Available on Sky Box Office . In Hamburg, Imtech Arena will host the fight. It’s a 55,000-seat venue. Outside of Pacquiao-Mayweather, this is probably the biggest fight, globally, that can be made in boxing. The fight was signed in 2009, but Haye

With six games played and four left to contest in their campaign in Group B of qualifying for the 2012European Championships the Irish squad know that their passage to Poland and the Ukraine is entirely in their own hands. That said two of the four remaining games are against their rivals for qualification, with Slovakia visiting Dublin on September 2nd and then Ireland’s visit to Moscow four days later. Qualification chances are helped by the fact that Russia visit Slovakia on October 7th, so at least one of the sides that night will drop points. That means a return of four out of a possible six points during September should guarantee at least second place for the Republic of Ireland. Second place would most probably mean the unhappy hunting ground of the play offs. Of course if we beat

wicklowsport both Slovakia and Russia, Ireland will qualify automatically as group winners, that is barring a disaster against either Andorra or Armenia. Slovakia’s victory in Moscow in September of last year and Russia’s unconvincing performance against Armenia in St. Petersburg illustrates that victory on Russian soil for this Irish side is not beyond the realms of belief. Football – Premier League 2011-2012 The 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League is the 20th edition of the Premier League and concludes two decades of English football since its revolutionary restructuring in 1992. Having lifted their 19th English league title at the end of last season Manchester United go into next season as defending champions. Championship winners Queens Park Rangers, runners-up Norwich City and play-off victors Swansea City have all been promoted to the Premier League, the latter becoming the first ever Welsh team to play Premier League football. Manchester United have been installed as the red-hot favourites for the

Premier League 2011-2012. Although many considered last season’s United side to be one of the worst to win a Premier League title they were still, in the end, comfortable champions. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was quick to show Ancelotti the door after his side failed to win anything last season and the new managerial appointment could be crucial if they are to challenge for the title in 2012. It was more of the same from The Gunners last season as a promising start to the campaign from Arsenal faded away as the finishing line drew closer.

Fans are clearly losing patience with Arsene Wenger and his men and as such Manchester City have now overtaken Arsenal in the pre-season odds for Premier League glory in 2011-2012. Man City now be able to spread their web of wealth even wider as they have the added temptation of Champions League football to offer to potential recruits. Liverpool may not have such luxuries but after a promising end to the season under Kenny Dalglish they are right back in the thick of things for the new season ahead.

With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.
