Here in the realm of a prehistoric volcano is a cradle of life that protects some of our planet’s rarest treasures, including 30 species of mammals and over 120 species of birds.

Picnics, Wondrous Walks At the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre The six-kilometre Wonga Walk is a circuit of discovery that reveals waterfalls and World Heritage rainforest. Start out at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre.

There are three mouth-watering locations to break out the hamper. The Glade Picnic Area and the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre Picnic Area have electric barbecues, tables and plenty of grass. Both are located close to lookouts and walking tracks. Secluded Never Never Picnic Area has the old world charm of a shingle roofed shelter shed, wood barbecues and nearby walks and waterfalls.

Wander out on the Skywalk for a bird’s eye view of the rainforest canopy and a panorama from the mountains to the ocean. But don’t drop your camera - at Crystal Shower Falls, a new 50 metre suspension bridge offers yet another perfect photo-op. Afterward, revive and chew it all over at the Canopy Café.

Here water truly is the essence of life. Soak up some of Australia’s most serene waterways, get wet in the wild or just let it all flow by.

The rivers and sheltered estuaries of the Coffs Coast offer a wide variety of fishing, picnic and paddling opportunities.

Afloat The Kalang and Bellinger Rivers converge at the popular riverside villages of Urunga and Mylestom, creating ideal conditions for fishing, boating, waterskiing and swimming. Be sure to explore the extensive wetlands boardwalk at Urunga.

Explore Moonee Creek (accessed at Moonee Beach) and Boambee Creek in Bongil Bongil National Park (accessed from Bongil Picnic Area or Sawtell).

The upper reaches of the beautiful Pine Creek adjacent to Bongil Bongil National Park are a paddler’s dream.

A two-kilometre walk along the banks of Woolgoolga Creek leads through subtropical rainforest to a wild waterfall.

Experience the charm of canoeing the Bellinger or the white knuckling white water of the Nymboida River. Take a one or two day tour of the challenging Grade 3 to 5 rapids at Platypus Flats.

The Solitary Islands Marine Park stretches over 75 km north from Muttonbird Island at Coffs and incorporates five islands, rock outcrops, reefs, beaches, rocky shores and estuaries.

Over 550 species of reef fish have been observed within the sanctuary. It also supports a range of protected species such as the black cod, turtles, whales, shore birds and rare marine algae.

The glistening white tower of the historic lighthouse on South Solitary is easily spotted from the coast and was once one of NSW’s most isolated manned beacons.

Oh, and keep an eye out for migratory whales bursting up from below and dolphins cresting the waves - these splendid cetaceans and natural show-offs are what marine memories are made of.

Just five kilometres from Coffs Harbour, the Forest Sky Pier offers a jaw-dropping panoramic view from mountains to the Pacific coast.

Take a stroll along the Jetty foreshore and Marina with its bobbing fishing boats and glorious harbour views – or take a cruise and see it all from the blue.

At the eastern end of the breakwall is Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, where thousands of migratory shearwaters nest every year after winging in from the Philippines.

The short walking track to the island’s peak commences at the award-winning Giidany Mirlarl Outdoor Education Space and offers panoramic views across Coffs Harbour. This is a place of high significance to the local Gumbaynggirr people and a fascinating Aboriginal Discovery program is offered by local National Parks rangers.

Protecting the wonders of the ocean beyond, Solitary Islands Marine Park is one of Australia’s most famous underwater diving and photography locations. The waters here are home to the world’s biggest colony of anemones and clown fish (think "Finding Nemo"). There are also sharks, giant squid, sea turtles and manta rays. Learn to dive and go down to see for yourself.

Woolgoolga – Wonders of Woopi Beyond Coffs Harbour, the inviting ocean villages and sands of Sapphire, Emerald, Moonee and Sandy Beach lead north to Woolgoolga (known as Woopi to the locals). Near Moonee Beach, take a stroll along Serenity Bay and over Look At Me Now headland to see kangaroos in their natural habitat.

You can’t miss the turnoff to Woopi, at which stands one of the coast’s most striking landmarks - the towering

white façade and minarets of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple. The town is renowned for its Punjabi culture and you can get a taste at the delectable annual Curryfest.

Continue through town to the headland, a favourite whale watching spot between May and November. A little further north is spectacular Arrawarra headland, with its rockpools, beaches and views over Solitary Islands Marine Park.

Head inland from Woolgoolga to visit the subtropical rainforest and sandstone ranges of Sherwood Nature Reserve (pack a picnic).

Bonville – Butterflies and Bunkers Venture south on the Pacific Highway and take the Tourist Drive 18 exit to Bonville. Stop in to witness the wonders of metamorphosis and savour a Devonshire Tea at the Butterfly House on Strouds Rd. Even if you aren’t a golfer, Bonville Golf Resort’s acclaimed course (voted the Australian mainland’s most beautiful for 12 successive years) is a fabulous place to pause for coffee or dine at the ‘chefs hatted’ Flooded Gums restaurant.

Back on the highway, turn left at Lindsays Rd and travel to Wood We Create Gallery where resident artist David Barden creates nature-inspired pieces from local and Australian timbers.

Sawtell – Sun, Surf and Style Travel south down the Pacific Highway, take the Lyons Road off-ramp and follow the road until you come upon the stylish seaside village of Sawtell. Follow the signs up to Sawtell Headland, a panoramic lookout from where you can scan the waves for whales and dolphins. Cool off with a swim with a view in the adjacent Sawtell Memorial Rock Pool or sink into the expansive sands of Sawtell Beach.

The town’s leafy main strip boasts a browse-worthy collection of specialty shops and boutiques. Afterward settle in for lunch at one of the award-winning restaurants and cafés under the shade of giant fig trees.

Repton/Mylestom – River and Rainforest R ‘n R Continuing south, take the Pacific Highway to the Repton/Mylestom exit.

Drive through Repton toward the beach and follow the dirt road through Bongil Bongil National Park, stopping off for a soul-reviving stroll on the one kilometre littoral rainforest walk (1km). Get the sand between your toes by walking behind the dunes to the point and back along the beach.

Just south of Repton is the popular fishing, water-skiing and holiday hamlet of Mylestom. Take a dip in the safety netted pool on the Bellinger River or hit the surf – they’re only a few hundred metres apart on this narrow sandy peninsular. There’s also a well-stocked local store for refreshments and plenty of shaded grass for a picnic with glorious river views.

Urunga – Rivers Meet the Sea A few kilometres further south along the Pacific Highway is the vilage of Urunga with its calm river lido and fascinating wetlands boardwalk. As you head across the bridge over the Kalang River, Anchors Wharf Café rests on the south bank below. Stop in at the Visitor Information Centre on your right and follow the road around to discover the town nestled along the inlet where river and ocean converge.

Stretching nearly a kilometre from riverbank to surf beach, the wetlands boardwalk offers plenty of surprises from bustling crowds of blue-shelled crabs to myriad species of wetland birds.
