Patrick J. Carnes, Ph.D., is an internationally known authority and speaker on addiction and recovery issues. He has authored over twenty books including the bestselling titles Out of the Shadows: Understanding Addiction Recovery, Betrayal Bond, Don’t Call It Love, The Gentle Path Through the Twelve Steps and The Gentle Path through the Twelve Principles. Dr. Carnes’ research provides the architecture for the “task model” of treating addictions that is used by thousands of therapists worldwide and many well-known treatment centers, residential facilities, and hospitals. He founded IITAP (International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals), which provides CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) training and certification as well as cutting-edge information for addiction professionals. Dr. Carnes has helped to develop assessments critical to the diagnosis and treatment of sex addiction, such as the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST), and the Sexual Dependency Inventory (SDI). Dr. Carnes currently serves as a Senior Fellow and Executive Director for the Gentle Path Program at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona. Sex Addiction and How the Internet is Changing Everything It is both an exciting and controversial time in the field of sex addiction.

Now more than ever those working in the field of addiction treatment need to be up to date regarding the changes and the needs of patients. Over the next months several articles will be published focusing on research in sex addiction. These articles represent the culmination of a major research initiative made possible through the collaboration between the American Foundation for Addiction Research, The University of Minnesota, and the University of Southern Mississippi. In this presentation Dr. Carnes will share with you the highlights from these findings and discuss how it may change how we look at sex addiction and sex addiction treatment.

The picture of sex addiction is changing due to the digitalization of sex. A new type of addict is emerging. Frankly, the internet is changing the long understood profile. Further, we are beginning to understand the nature of addiction as a brain disease. These discoveries have impacted addiction treatment and these discoveries continue to expand as we are now able to see the impact of sex addiction on the brain.

Now more than ever, as those treating addiction, it is our responsibility to understand this shift and to prepare ourselves to meet the challenges ahead.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: • Summarize significant research in the field of sex addiction and how it impacts the direction of sex addiction treatment.

• Identify phases of sex addiction as tracked through research through the years along with the implications for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment.

• Develop a more comprehensive treatment plan for sex addiction through the utilization of information presented from current trends and research and the understanding of how the internet is changing the face of sex addiction.
