Race To Zero Row House

Row House The Race to zero was net zero housing competition that was completed with 6 other people, all with different majors. There were three Architectural Engineers and four Architects. The objective was for us to design a single family home that over the course of a year would use a net vaule of zero energy. Since we choose to have are site in the urban area of Cincinnati we choose to go with a Row House design. We started with looking at passive houses to get an idea of what went into making a passive net zero home. We found that a L-shaped profile was the most efficent We designed the home to house four occupents, and with two full bathroom on the third floor and a half bathroom on the first floor. We ended up going through several different layouts that would fit in the narrow space of the house and would allow for ventalation and stack heating to occur. 1

The image of the entry is to show where the stack heating is, with an automated skylight at the top and what you would see coming into the house. Cincinnati has a history of being an industrial city, so we wanted to have a modern industrial look for the house. The Mezzanine overlooks the living room. It is meant as a second gathering space that is still connected to the living room below.

Chicago Building

Chicago Market Park

Located along Michigan Ave and the Chicago River. The park is meant to feel like a hill and to encourage people to walk through it. To add some green space to the area was goal. Stepping that leads up to the roof/park can also be used as a place of rest for those walking along Michigan ave. On the inside of the building is a Food Market, Community kitchen and a Restaurant. There is also a winter garden so that the space can be used as a park year around.

Food Market The rendering above shows the interior of the building at the main entrance. The stairs on either side of the bridge are entrances for the street below. The interior is supposed to feel like the inside of a cave. Shopping stores run along both sides of the building as well as some spaces for sitting. The bottom portion of the build has a community kitchen where cooking spaces, lessons and tools are held for those who want to learn to cook. Up against the river is a restaurant that goes right up to the water. The Image to the left shows the plan view for the interior. The winter garden is a place for rest like a plot of land along a river. A stream goes from the top of the winter garden and becomes a waterfall.

Roof Park Plan view of the roof park and structure that encloses the Winter garden. There is a stream that flows along the roof. Going from the river towards the Winter garden. There is a second stream that flows from Michigan Avenue into the winter garden. Towards the river are a group of community greenhouses designed for local residents to grow spices. Pedestrians have access to the winter garden up in the park. There are four areas that allow you to get on the roof. Through the winter garden, along Michigan Avenue, next to the Tribune tower, and along the river. The form of the building for this plan view was meant to feel like an extension of the river flowing towards the site of the winter garden.

A development of a community to have retail on the first floor and office above with apartment building on one side of the site. The entrance has a restaurants on either side of the road and funnels you into the space. Two more restaurants and plaza space in the center of the area. Retail with apartments lines the east side of the space and retail with office lines the north, south and west side of the space. I was involved with building the base models and master plan layout; the renderings and design of the buildings. The renderings so the energy of the spaces with the retail filled out. As well as the uses for the plaza space in the center.

Hydroponic Row House Case Study 1

1 2 3 4 5 6

The project idea was to design a green neighborhood that incorporaters hydroponic greenhouses into Row Houses. This is the first case study building design. The building is a green house inserted into a standard Row House design. The green house is an interruption of the row house design and causes the layout of the house to change. The green house splits the Row house in half forcing you to go through the green house to get to the other side of the building. The interior of the green house is raised grated flooring to allow all the piping to go underneath to get to the roots of the plants. The layouts of the green house would be in a central courtyard style with flower beds and a more fluid design. The walls of the greenhouse would all curtain walls. The reasoning behind this is because of a study that I found explaining how people have less stress when they have a view of nature. The first floor would be focused on growing food like small herbs, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and whatever the occupants decided. The systems that would be used would be the Nutrient Film Technique system and deep-water culture. The second floor would be growing lavender to provide a relaxing aroma. The system used for this would be the drip system with a perlite grow medium. The third floor would be growing bamboo because it is a sustainable material and creates an interesting view. These would be grown in Deep-Water culture system because it provides more space for the plant to grow in. The neighborhood would be similar to the layout that EFFEKT did for the Regen Village, where they have buildings that provide energy and water treatment. However, instead of having power plants and water treatment facilities the buildings would be similar to Studios NAB design of Floating Urban Farming towers. Which are towers where each floor of the tower is purposed for different things, like growing insects, bees, fish and a variety of plants. The building in the neighborhood would include those towers as well as composting areas.
