We all have a way of viewing something. When staring up at the sky, one might see a heart and one might see a flower. There is no right or wrong answer, it’s simply a matter of perspective. As not just students, but also journalists, each of us have perspectives and the freedom to express them. Perspectives give stories an edge

that make them unique and interesting to the public. FSPA 2014 will take you on a path to further explore the true power of perspectives. There are an infinite number of ways to look at something, and our duty as journalists is to expose them all to the world, allowing the public to form their own perspective.

1. COLLEEN BENNETT PHILPOT President Colleen Bennett Philpot, CJE, is FSPA’s President and the adviser of the Pathfinder yearbook and oakridgemedia.org at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications graduate was awarded the JEA Rising Star award in 2013 and recently became a member of the JEA Digital Media Committee. Her kids are pretty nifty, too, earning state and national awards and recognition each year. She is currently conducting independent research to share with advisers nationwide regarding efforts to diversify journalism education. When she isn’t driving 160 miles round trip to and from work each day, you can catch her digging around in thrift stores or obsessing over home decor while glued to HGTV. Her niece Brooke, 7, is practically her best friend, and her other niece Bryndle, 1, probably would be too if it weren’t for the whole not being potty trained thing. Colleen and her husband, Rob, got married this past November (check out the fancy, new double last name). Follow her on Twitter @colbe6 2. BRIT TAYLOR Vice President Brit Taylor is FSPA’s Vice President and the journalism teacher at Hagerty High School in Oviedo. He has been involved with journalism since the ‘80s, when, as a junior high newspaper editor, he had to run pages through the glue machine and paste them down himself. After 19 years of high school advising, his current newspaper and yearbook staffs can’t run a glue machine, but they earn nice recognition despite this deficiency, including All-American and Gold Medalist ratings, a Pacemaker Finalist and two Silver Crowns. Brit and his wife, Maureen, have three children, Emma, Maggie and Wynn. 3. WAYNE GARCIA Executive Director Wayne Garcia is an award-winning po-

As a journalist, he worked for the St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Tribune and Gainesville Sun daily newspapers. He was the 2009 recipient of the Irene Miller Vigilance in Journalism Award from the Pinellas Chapter of the ACLU. He teaches journalism at the University of South Florida in Tampa, having completed a year as a visiting professor at the University of Florida’s awardwining journalism school in 2009-2010. He also serves as the executive director of the Florida Scholastic Press Association. Garcia is a Florida Gator but received his master’s degree from USF St. Petersburg. Mancini was a 2007 Reynolds Institute fellow at Arizona State University and FSPA’s District 2 Teacher of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Although her photography is her strong point, Mancini loves working with words, designing with passion, teaming up with others in her school and the community, and conceptualizing themes with her students. What Mancini loves most about advising young journalists is the variety of challenges which make each year a unique, new adventure. Mancini’s students have more than 200 bylines in the community press. 8. JENNI NEWTON District 3 Co-Director Jenni Newton has been advising the student newspaper at Florida Virtual School since 2006, and the student yearbook since 2011. Sponsor Honor Roll Since its beginnings in 1946, FSPA has achieved many amazing goals. As an all-volunteer organization, however, much of our success has depended on sponsors who realize the importance of enhancing and promoting scholastic journalism. With today’s ever-increasing economic challenges, this sponsorship is crucial. Therefore, in grateful recognition of support received, FSPA launched an Honor Roll program in the 2001-2002 school year to recognize our partners who assist in our ongoing efforts to educate, train and support Florida’s student journalists and their advisers. The following list reflects contributions and in-kind sponsorships channeled through the FSPA office since that time. We salute all of our sponsors!

JOURNALISTS OFTHEYEAR
1
2
1. CLARISSA BUCH Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School, Miami For as long as I can remember, journalism has been the central theme in my life. I am known in my school and my community as a journalist. That label is not just a title but also a way of life; it has become my identity My story began in freshman year when I entered “Journalism I.” The following year, I joined The Lightning Strike staff, became a copy editor, and needless to say my year was a blend of long hours, late nights and unforgettable memories. In my junior year I was chosen the managing editor, which makes me the youngest student to hold the position on The Strike. During the last two years in the position, my paper was recognized as “All-American” by the National Scholastic Press Association and “All Florida” by the Florida Scholastic Press Association. Most recently, NSPA named our paper a Pacemaker finalist. However, my involvement in scholastic journalism extends far beyond the classroom. I was named the FSPA District 6 Representative for 2012-2013, and I am now the State Chairwoman for 2013-2014. I am a nominee for the Miami Herald “Silver Knight” awards in the category of journalism, and I freelance for various city magazines in Fort Lauderdale. I am officially a “Mizzou Tiger” and will be attending the University of Missouri School of Journalism in the fall. None of this would have been possible without my adviser Mary K. Sullivan, or as I like to call her “Sully.” I wish I had the words to describe how thankful I am for you. You have shown me the true meanings of passion, dedication and love; and for that, I am forever grateful. 2. WILLIAM HARVEY King High School, Tampa When I was younger, my parents laid down a

free-time ultimatum. I could either play an instrument or join a sport. I ignored both options and chose to be a writer. My first foray into journalism was when I was accepted onto the St. Petersburg Times X-Team at the age of 9. After my initial year, I transitioned to Times Correspondent and continued pitching stories and reviews. In high school, I started writing for tb-two*, the Tampa Bay Times’ student-run high school paper where I am currently a student editor. Closer to home, I am the content editor for my school paper, the King High Scepter. Writing is my forte, particularly humor and opinion pieces. I’m never afraid to raise my voice, whether to cause change or just to make a good joke. I’m also not a big fan of unwieldy SAT words; I prefer to keep my pieces understandable and concise. Design is my second love; nothing excites me more than a well thought-out page design. Outside of journalism, I am a huge nerd who loves all things related to pop culture. In my free time, you can catch me designing mock-product packages, building costumes or petitioning against Comic Sans. 3. JORDAN THURN Lakeland High School, Lakeland Jordan Thurn is the third-year editor-in-chief of the Highlander staff. Among her accolades are her three-year position as sports writer, working for the Bagpipe staff, as well as providing coverage for Lakelandfootball.com and Bright House Networks. Jordan acts as a mentor to younger students in the program and has been a contributor, designer and writer for four publications of the joint Lakeland and Harrison yearbook. Jordan is a member of JEA, has attended eight FSPA conferences and has attended an NSPA conference in San Antonio, TX. Enrolled in 12 AP classes throughout her high school career, Jordan managed a 4.4 GPA while adding 472 community
services hours to her resume, working with the Salvation Army, Watson Clinic Cancer Center and for Lakeland High School’s Multimedia Communication Academy journalism program where she accumulated most of her hours. Jordan’s experience in print and video production have made her a true asset not only to her high school’s program, but her work with the business community, including the Lakeland Ledger, Barrett Communications and Bright House Networks has extended the visibility of MCA and LHS students, staff and volunteers in important ways. Jordan has been accpted into UF’s School of Journalism and Communications for fall 2014. 4. LIZ TSOURAKIS Hillsborough High School, Tampa Liz Tsourakis is a senior at Hillsborough High School and a fourth-year member of the journalism program. She is the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Hilsborean yearbook and an editor of tb-two*, the Tampa Bay Times’ weekly high school newspaper. She worked briefly on From the Corps, a local TV news show produced for teenagers by the Tampa Mayor’s Youth Corps and contributed to fiveonfive, an internationally-distributed roller derby magazine. In 2012, she was named FSPA’s Emerging Young Journalist and the following year she served as District 4’s student representative. Last year she covered San Diego Comic Con, where she interviewed the casts of “Psych,” “Community,” and “Key & Peele.” Liz intends to double-major in psychology and film at either the University of Chicago or Barnard College, and later pursue journalism at the graduate level. She dreams of becoming an NBC Page and going on to work for the network in broadcast journalism or TV production.
Student Journalist of the Year award in honor of slain journalist Todd C. Smith
Todd C. Smith 1961 - 1989
“Duty is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less.” Spoken by Robert E. Lee, “These words were Todd C. Smith’s favorite quote, and in his own way, he lived up to them,” said 1996 Leon High School High Life news editor Brandy Doyle in a tribute she wrote for The History of FSPA. Smith, a 1979 High Life co-editor, was killed in November 1989. On a working vacation from The Tampa Tribune, Smith was kidnapped by Shining Path guerillas while attempting to report on Peru’s cocaine-producing Huallaga Valley. Several days later, his body was found on a playground in Uchiza, Peru. Apparently, he had been mistaken for a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent and was tortured to death.
16 | FSPA 2014 State Convention
The FSPA Executive Board named the Student Journalist of the Year Award program in honor of Smith’s dedication to duty. In 2002, the inaugural presentation was made by Smith’s father, Robert P. Smith, at the awards banquet. Members of Smith’s family, former colleagues from his time on staff at The Tribune and Tallahassee’s Leon High School newspaper attended. After beginning his career in high school, Smith was editor-in-chief of the college newspaper at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. He interned at the Tallahassee Democrat and worked for the St. Petersburg Times. In 1987, he freelanced in Nicaragua and Honduras, running a series in the St. Petersburg Times and San Francisco Chronicle about his journey with the Contras.
TEACHERS OFTHEYEAR D1
D2
District 1: Sara Guilbeau Advises: Yearbook adviser at Gulf Breeze High School. Entered journalism: Put into role of adviser this year by the administration to successfully organize and improve the yearbook and journalism program. Other experience: Business management and communications. Appreciates: The support of the school administration, local professional press and local community. The tight-knit community respects and is involved with the students, the school and the publications program. Biggest challenge: Overcoming the learning curve of a first year adviser. Goal is to improve the yearbook into an award-winning book. Greatest enjoyment: Working as a team with the students to produce a publication that will be treasured in years to come. Praise: “Miss Guilbeau possesses a positive and enthusiastic personality. I have found other yearbook staff members have accepted her as a strong working member of our team and she has a great rapport with the entire yearbook staff.” Cailyn Hamstra, Cetacea yearbook editor
D3
D4
District 3: Callie Williams Advises: Newspaper, Yearbook and TV Production at Astronaut High School. Entered journalism: High school yearbook staff. Other journalism teaching: At district and state FSPA conventions and at yearbook summer workshops. Creating a community: All three journalism outlets work hand in hand. She has created an atmosphere that promotes student leadership, freedom of speech and student-guided reporting. She has learned to be flexible because what works for one staff doesn’t always work for another. Biggest challenge: Budgeting–the yearbook staff has worked hard to get out debt, which will happen this year. Combining three staffs has been a juggling act, but she loves it. Greatest enjoyment: “When my students shine. I love seeing them celebrate deadlines, help each other or lead in ways that develop only in the journalism classroom. I love seeing [my editors] take ownership and get involved.” Praise: “There is no doubt in my mind that Mrs. Williams has lit a spark in the hearts of many students, teaching them the importance of journalism and doing so in a way that makes each of her students feel District 2: Janice “J.R.” Latham-Smith comfortable and accepted,” Jenna Overstreet, Golden Advises: TV Production Program at Dunnellon High Aerie yearbook editor School. Entered journalism: Editor of her elementary school District 4: Joe Humphrey newspaper. District 6: Patrick Sicher Advises: TV Production program at South Dade Senior High School. Entered journalism: Six years ago when he took over the TV class. Other experience: In the last six years, he has worked for BlackSportsOnline.com, covered events including the Miami Marlins and Miami Dolphins. Partnerships with his class: With the South Dade News Leader and with the City of Homestead to film community events. Diversity: Last year, he had a deaf student who was the subject of an award-winning movie the class made this year. Being the subject of this film has changed the formerly introverted student into one who is social, communicative and unafraid of showing people he is deaf. Greatest challenge: Getting his students to overcome doubt. They don’t feel their work is appreciated by the teachers. They also have to learn that despite not having the latest technology, they can still produce quality videos with their talent and creativity. Greatest Enjoyment: “Whenever a student tells me they want to study journalism because of my class.” Praise: He is the “best teacher I have ever had in my life,” Luis Gonzalez, Class of 2014 District 7: Melissa Falkowski Advises: Yearbook, Literary Magazine at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Entered journalism: Joined the yearbook staff in seventh grade. FSPA involvement: District Director, Contest Coordinator. Found money: Wrote a grant to fully fund the literary magazine, which has been publishing for the last seven years. Passionate about: Student press rights and students’ First Amendment rights. She applied to be a part of the Tinker Tour and her school was selected as a stop on the tour. Her students discussed important issues with someone who made history standing up for student rights. Biggest challenge: There are never enough hours in a day for this busy adviser and mother. Greatest enjoyment: Working with her publications students. For many students, the yearbook room becomes “home away from home and a place where they can belong.” She values the close, long-term relationships with students, many of whom keep in touch with her after they graduate. Praise: “It would be a crime if I didn’t credit Falkowski and her role as a teacher for influencing where I am today and what I have already accomplished. I am currently a part of the Co-Op Program at the Boston Globe.” Kathleen Liu, Class of 2012 FSPA 2014 State Convention | 17

BEHAVIOR RULES/ADVISER DUTIES Adviser Duties: ALL advisers must assist with supervision of students at all times. Supervision inside the hotel during the entertainment activities and at nighttime is the responsibility of every adviser. SUPERVISION of your students MUST be your TOP PRIORITY. After checking on their own students, advisers should patrol their own floors for at LEAST 30 minutes after curfew. An offduty police officer will make rounds on each floor. Advisers are reminded that they must judge contests if their students are participating. Advisers whose students are not participating are encouraged to assist with the judging process. Behavior Rules: FSPA delegates have established a record of good behavior, mainly because rules are clearly stated in the behavior contract, which delegates must review
and sign prior to the convention. These rules are meant to keep delegates safe and to give everyone an opportunity to benefit from convention activities. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Curfew: 11:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Students must be in assigned rooms at that time. Visitation: Prohibited after curfew. Visitation in hotel rooms by students of the opposite sex must be supervised by adviser. Students must make whereabouts known to chaperone at all times. Students should not go anywhere alone. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO LEAVE THE HOTEL AT NIGHT without a chaperone. Tobacco use is prohibited. Appropriate clothing should be worn at all times. Dancing which is determined to be “inappropriate” will result in discipline by your school administrators.
9. Wristbands must be worn at all times. 10. Students should not engage in disruptive or inconsiderate behavior. Students should understand the hotel has many other guests who should be treated respectfully at all times. 11. The following rules are most serious and will result in the immediate suspension of the students’ publication from FSPA for one year. These rules include, but are not limited to: possession of a weapon, sexual misconduct, fighting, possession or use of alcohol or drugs, unresolved damage to hotel facilities, leaving convention without supervision or permission, cheating in FSPA contests and competitions, and infractions deemed serious by the Executive Board. 12. Violations of these rules may result in forfeiture of awards by the entire publication or school delegation.
