“The clarity of the air, the beauty of the landscape, the appreciation of quiet, of dark, of starlight are all outstanding at this time of year.
FFOREST TO DO & SEE Snoozing in front of the woodburner, sweating it out in the sauna, drinking welsh beers in the Bwthyn, eating delicious food in the lodge and staring into middle distance. Exhausting. Meanwhile, for the super energetic, all around us are some fantastic walks, beaches and restaurants and pubs to visit and make the most whilst you’re with us. On the following pages are a small selection of our favourites.
Walks The fforest loop We’ve got a great walk around fforest that goes passed historic Quarries, water buffalo, river rapids. Over board walks, streams, fallen trees, and boulders. Through a wildlife reserve, reeds, a pub, secret tunnels and magical Douglas Fir forests. Along the rivers edge and tree top toepaths. Not in that order. It makes a great run. It’s a 1-4 hour (pub dependant) walk or half hour run.
Walks Abereiddy to Porthgain
Starting near the ‘Blue lagoon’ abandoned quarry breached by the sea, the walk takes you along the coastal cliff route of a nineteenth century rail line past of a small scale and quarries remnants of an industry where roadstone was quarried and transported to Porthgain where it was crushed and loaded into huge brick built hoppers lining the steep sides of the tiny harbour. A tiny other-wordly post-industrial harbour now used only for fishing. Its pub the ‘Sloop Inn’ is a perfect end and does great food and beer. A stunning early afternoon walk and takes a good hour. (longer after the pub on the way back)
Moylegrove and Witches Cauldron
South of Cardigan this Loop takes you high along the blustery cliffs above the jaggy rocks and usually wild seas, past the huge ‘Witches Caldron’ a natural Lagoon, then back round to where you started. Partly a ‘Hairy’ walk, single track on steep cliffs Takes around two hours depending on how long you watch the seals and the sea shoot out the blow hole when there is a big swell.
Penbryn to Llangrannog
A high winding coastal path walk from Penbryn National Trust beach up, over, along, past the ‘Secret Beach’ and down into the arms of the beautiful village of Llangrannog and its cosy pub the ‘Pentre’. It’s easy, though a few steep step climbs, has great seascape views and only takes an hour. A scramble down to the secret beach is worthwhile.
The Waterfall walk Near cwmtydu circular walk
Is spectacular and fairly unknown. Starting near the tiny church of St. Tysilio’s chapel in the middle of nowhere, near Nanternis. From the rear of the church the walk takes you through the spindly woods following a building stream to a beautiful woodland waterfall where two streams meet. From there follow down to a beautiful remote cove. And follow the signs up the other side of the valley to take you back to the church. Stunning in winter or after big rainfall. Allow 2-3 hours
Between Penbryn and Llangrannog
Beaches Poppit The Teifi river flows out of the centre of Cardigan and it weaves its way down to the estuary, where the fresh and salt water mix the southerly side opens out onto Poppit beach. Either low tide sand flats or a rushing high tide forcing a hastily retreat to the sand dunes. Poppit beach will either blow the cobwebs out of your collar or leave you rosy cheeked from jumping off the sand dunes. It,s the closest beach to fforest and takes 10minutes car journey from fforest camp.
Mwnt Contesting Poppit for the closest beach to Cardigan, Mwnt may be as the crow flies, but once you’ve done the compulsory climb up the mwnt (mount) towering above the beach, you will see Cardigan Bay from its best spot. The small beach is a seal cove haven nesting around the corner from Cardigan Island. 15minutes in the car from fforest camp.
Penbryn The fforest chiefs’ favourite. Broad, windswept and beautiful, and so is the beach. A National Trust beach accessed by an elfish forest walk. If you time it right you can walk north along the beach at low tide passed the cave and onto a secret beach. But you won’t have long before the tide cuts you off so be weary! 30minutes from fforest camp north of Cardigan.
