Now more than ever we understand the importance of lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need. As such, our team is committed to supporting the local community in various ways that align with the company’s overall mission and values.
The COVID-19 global pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of countries and nations all over the world. Here on St. Croix, our agents are even more driven than before to identify organizations and initiatives within the community that would benefit from direct assistance from the company 24 | COLDWELLBANKERVI.COM
with the support of their franchise owner, Schmidt Family of Companies. Schmidt Family of Companies purchased Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty in 2018 and soon after created the Schmidt Community Fund, a non-profit organization that focuses on investing in youth, programs, and initiatives in the communities where they live and serve. One of the goals of the fund is to support the work that our St. Croix Realtors are doing by donating a portion of funds to various team-sponsored projects. Carrie Skomp, VP of Operations & IT for the Schmidt Family of Companies, shared how supporting Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty with these monetary donations aligns with their philosophy. “We truly believe that together, we can do more,” said Skomp. “Our guiding philosophy is to invest in our youth by supporting programs and initiatives in the communities in which we live and serve that further the lifework of the Schmidt Family, our agents and staff.” Year to date in St. Croix, the Schmidt Community Fund has given a total of $5,000 in donations focusing on children in the community. One of the biggest opportunities on St. Croix
is the absence of maintained playground spaces for children to run, jump, and play together. In May 2021, Children’s First Project, a project of the St. Croix Education Initiative, was established to design, fundraise, and build a state-of-the-art community playground at Midre Cummings Park in Frederiksted. The park will be built by Play by Design, a New York-based manufacturer of community playground equipment. Collectively, our Realtors donated nearly $6,000 to the project combined with the Schmidt Community Fund’s contribution of $2,000. Our agent Isabel Brady was a key fundraiser for the project, donating $2,000 and personally raising over $140,000 total! “I was moved to help in developing a vibrant community park accessible to children of all abilities and ages in the much deserving town of Frederiksted,” said Brady. Another community outreach project our Coldwell Banker St Croix Realty agents contributed to was Project Promise. Headed by Resa O’Reilly, this organization leads an intensive, holistic, multi-year afterschool program for at-risk students from 5th
to 12th grade. Our Community Outreach Committee contributed $1,300 to help repair the organization’s 2,200 square foot facility in downtown Christiansted. The building, in need of extensive renovations, will function as Project Promise’s headquarters. It will house their flagship Caterpillar Program while serving as a community center featuring classrooms, a computer lab, multi-purpose room, office space, full kitchen, small garden and a laundry center for children and their families to use. In partnership with the St. Croix Board of Realtors, Project Promise received $5,000 toward their building rehabilitation project. In addition to these numerous projects, our office has supported the robust St. Croix community in many other ways: one of our agents, Amy DeWilde, donated $1,500 to the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix to sponsor their 37th annual women’s race. The race helps to raise awareness on domestic and sexual violence and the need for healthy relationships in our community. All monies raised from the race support the advocacy, programs and services for victims and survivors of violence, which the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix provides free of charge. Additionally in 2020, our agent Lorine Williams received the Good Neighbor Award from the St. Croix Board of Realtors in recognition of the work she has done in the community. A donation of $1,000 was given to the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix in recognition of her service. Furthermore, every one of our agents has their own focus of what they support within our community. Stephen Swanton is a large advocate and supporter of the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation. Jill Cherubin, Kelly Odom, and I support Good Hope Country Day—where our kids go to school throughout the year— in a variety of ways. Since our inception, our agents have cheerfully given back to the St. Croix community in several ways, both collectively and individually. The beauty of living on St. Croix is that a beach and crystal clear water are never more than a 15 minute drive away. Our island is 28 miles long and seven miles wide completely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea – isn’t that one of the many reasons we are all lured to visit or move to the US Virgin Islands? We often receive the request to search for property in a waterfront community where you can walk to a neighborhood beach or live in a community where you can hear the waves rolling in. For those of you that are interested in living in a waterfront neighborhood here are some of our waterfront communities that may interest you.
GREEN CAY Green Cay, some know it as Miss Bea, is an East End community comprised of waterfront homes, hillside cottages and a beachfront condo complex. This beachfront community is located just around the corner from Chenay Bay and Cheeseburgers in Paradise. There is a long stretch of sand great for invigorating beach walks or simply sprawling out under the shade of a palm tree. There are areas where you can walk into the water to rinse off. For our avid snorkelers, there is a beautiful reef just off the shore where you can swim with a school of fish or admire the array of colorful sea fans.

DID YOU KNOW? The United States had wanted a Caribbean naval base since Civil War times, and in January 1865, began negotiations with Denmark for purchase of the Danish West Indies. On March 31st at 4pm (52 years later!), Denmark ceded the islands to the United States for $25 million in gold. Celebrations on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John honored the transfer with bands, marches, and elaborate gun salutes. As the Danes played the Danish Royal Anthem, Denmark lowered its flag. The American band struck up our National Anthem, and the U.S. raised Old Glory. Together with the Danes, Virgin Islanders commemorate Transfer Day each year. In 2021, the islands got to celebrate the 104th anniversary!
