Once a stagecoach stop between San Diego and Julian during the 1870s’ Gold Rush Ramona was renamed in 1886 after Helen Hunt Jackson’s popular 1884 novel about a half-Native American woman who faced discrimination in Southern California after the Mexican War. American settlers first arrived in the mid-1800s, and the first brick buildings were erected on downtown’s Main Street in the 1880s. In 1900, the town was home to many agricultural ranches. Today, its fastest-growing crop is grapes. Ramona Valley was designated an official American Viticultural Area in January 2006. The number of boutique wineries exploded from two to about 30 in five years. Golden Eagle Farm, established in 1972, is one of the premiere thoroughbred breeding farms in California.
